title Programming Languages For Generative Design: A Comparative Study

summary In the field of Generative Design (GD), Visual Programming Languages (VPLs), such as Grasshopper, are becoming increasingly popular compared to the traditional Textual Programming Languages (TPLs) provided by CAD applications, such as RhinoScript. This reaction is explained by the relative obsolescence of these TPLs and the faster learning curve of VPLs. However, modern TPLs offer a variety of linguistic features designed to overcome the limitations of traditional TPLs, making them hypothetical competitors to VPLs. In this paper, we reconsider the role of TPLs in the design process and we present a comparative study of VPLs and modern TPLs. Our findings show that modern TPLs can be more productive than VPLs, especially, for large-scale and complex design tasks. Finally, we identify some problems of modern TPLs related to portability and sharing of programs and we propose a solution.

summary The three-dimensional reconstitution of cities and urban tissues was the subject of several studies and researches. In order to obtain the acquisition of the geometry of architectural or urban sets, some studies are based on Photogrammetric or on computer vision. Others have focused on the development of tools of acquisition from a laser providing a 3D scatter plot. Some of them yet focused towards the development of CAD software. The automatic generation for morphological 3D representation based on the exploitation of the architectural knowledge basis is also an option. This type of work becomes more relevant and legitimate when it concerns old cities in state of ruin or more simply missing whose remains only prints or literary descriptions similar to our case study; the old town of Jijel that many people ignore its existence. The aim of this work is to achieve a 3D reconstitution of buildings of this town based on historical documents, mostly prints, digitized old maps and plans, as well as literary texts (tales of travelers, military records, and history books). The method developed can solve and generate possible urban volumes in the most frequent cases. The 3D model obtained, despite its geometric simplicity, can view the city from different angles and open new opportunities for research in history, architecture and town planning.

summary We approached a infovis design study from a graphical design point of view, focusing on the rationale and iterative nature of the process. We show how the layout solutions were developed and we present some code abstractions, methods and objects, that were created for helping representing layouts on code and iterating them. These abstractions can in the future be developed into a full toolkit focused on the layout aspects of the infovis graphic design process.

summary This paper presents a pilot project, using mobile devices in a History of Art and Architecture classroom to enhance instructor-student classroom interactions and student learning. At our Faculty of Architecture this particular class has a usual high failure rate (26% F in 2012). It is a compulsory course for architecture students, some of them are required to take this course twice or more before they can graduate. Traditional learning is lecture-based, and students studying toward their tests are often overloaded with information. In June 2013, Rangsit University initiated a new policy to provide tablets to every freshmen; around 7,200 tablets were distributed campus-wide (Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 with S-pen). Toward the end of the class, the students were asked to complete a questionnaire in order to find out what they think about mobile learning. Typically, students are quite satisfied, and give positive feedback in their comments. The experience gained from this pilot project will be extended to other classes.

summary Working with and against environmental processes, such as the movement of water, earth, and rock, and terrain, has been a perpetual challenge since the dawn of civilisation. While it has been possible to gradually tame many landscapes to perform in a predictable manner, there are many circumstances where we are forced to live with and around such processes in everyday life. This research is primarily interested in the potential of design to interact with such processes. Specifically, we are interested in the designed redirection of erosion and landslide processes already observable in nature, taking the urbanised hillsides of the Alps as test case scenario. The research specialisation continues a research and design focus specialised on processes material deposition of river and flood systems, further down the water catchment chain (REF: ANON 2012). This specific alpine research is compelling in the context of Anthropocene processes, we are specifically focussed in the appraisal, harnessing and redirection of existing environmental phenomena, given what can be understood as our inevitable interaction with these processes (Sijmons 2015). Within this broader research, which has ecological, cultural, and formal potential, this paper shall explore the practical aspects of connecting design, and the designer, with the potential for understanding and designing these evolving mountain landscapes. There is a long history behind the development of landscape elements which control avalanches, mud, rock, and landslides. The cultural, functional and aesthetic role of such elements in the landscape is relatively undiscussed, epitomising an approach that is primarily pragmatic in both engineering and expense. It is perhaps no surprise that these elements have a dominant physical and visual presence in the contemporary landscape. Through the investigation of synergies with other systems, interests, and design potential for such landscape elements, it is proposed that new potential can be found in their implementation. This research proposes that the intuitive linking of common design software to direct landslide simulation, design of and cultural use can interact with these natural processes. This paper shall demonstrate methods to within which design can enter the process of landscape management, linking the modelling processes of the landscape designer with the simulation capabilities of the specialised engineer.

title CAD Scripting and Visual Programming Languages for Implementing Computational Design Concepts: A Comparison from a Pedagogical Point of View

summary This paper compares the use of scripting languages and visual programming languages for teaching computational design concepts to novice and advanced architecture students. Both systems are described and discussed in terms of the representation methods they use. With novice students better results were obtained with the visual programming language. However, the generative strategies used were restricted to parametric variation and the use of randomness. Scripting, on the other hand, was used by advanced students to implement rule-based generative systems. It is possible to conclude that visual languages can be very useful for making architecture students understand general programming concepts, but scripting languages are fundamental for implementing generative design systems. The paper also discusses the importance of the ability to shift between different representation methods, from more concrete to more abstract, as part of the architectural education.

summary This paper aims to investigate the potential of both open source software and new media (esp. computer vision and augmented reality) as tools for architectural design and education. The examples illustrated in the paper would be drawn mainly from students’ projects done as part of their AA Media Studies Course submission at the AA School of Architecture (AA) during the academic years from 2011/2012 to 2012/2013. The paper outlines the main approaches, which students have chosen to implement, both directly and indirectly, these new media and tools into their studio work at the AA. Section 1 briefly introduces a range of currently available open source computational design toolkits that are deemed useful for quick implementation of computer vision and augmented reality technologies. The related programming languages, softwares and hardwares would also be introduced and described accordingly. Sections 2 and 3 are accompanied with a visual catalogue of students’ projects to better illustrate the diversity in the understanding and implementation of computer vision and augmented reality technologies in architectural design. Section 4 serves to conclude the paper by first discussing briefly the feedback from students at the end of the course before clarifying the context of the research and thus its relation to recent work done by others using similar technologies.

summary Increasingly more architects use programming as a means for form finding and design exploration, a tendency that is expected to continue. Even though significant progress has been made in the simplifi cation of programming languages, complex design tasks might still require large coding efforts. We do not think it is wise to force architects to also become experts in programming languages and software engineering. Instead, similarly to what happened with other design and building disciplines, we think that the future of digital design lies in the collaborative effort of architects and software engineers. In this paper we analyze different situations where such collaboration increases productivity and frees the architect to more creative tasks.

summary Learning programming can be a challenging task for design students, especially when code is to be entered in textual form. Visual programming languages, such as McNeil’s Grasshopper, have helped students to engage in scripting without having to deal with lower level syntax that is often hindering them in expressing their thoughts. However, the problem with learning how to program textually is only postponed: When switching to a new platform, students may be forced to learn coding from scratch, and, even worse, to do so in a textual environment that is yet unfamiliar. Our idea is simple: Connect visual programming with textual coding, using code-generation as means. Using this approach enables students to think visually, and see the results textually. An added bonus is the possibility to use debugging, a feature that is yet lacking from Grasshopper. By this way, our language aims to enable students to gradually move from visual to textual programming in a comfortable manner.

summary The emergence of quasi-periodic tiling theories in mathematics and material science is revealing a new class of symmetry, which had never been accessible before. Because of their astounding visual and structural properties, quasi-periodic symmetries can be ideally suited for many applications in art and architecture; providing a rich source of ideas for articulating form, pattern, surface and structure. However, since their discovery, the unique long-range order of quasi-periodic symmetries, is still posing a perplexing puzzle. As rule-based systems, the ability to algorithmically generate these complicated symmetries can be instrumental in understanding and manipulating their geometry. Recently, the discovery of quasi-periodic patterns in ancient Islamic architecture is providing a unique example of how ancient mathematics can inform our understanding of some basic theories in modern science. The recent investigation into these complex and chaotic formations is providing evidence to show that ancient designers, by using the most primitive tools (a compass and a straightedge) were able to resolve the complicated long-range principles of ten-fold quasi-periodic formations. Derived from these ancient principles, this paper presents a computational model for describing the long-range order of octagon-based quasi-periodic formations. The objective of the study is to design an algorithm for constructing large patches of octagon-based quasi-crystalline formations. The proposed algorithm is proven to be successful in producing an infinite and defect-free covering of the two-dimensional plane.

summary Digital manufacturing in both as art and technology is a new way of designing, re-creation and re-invention of reality. This paper considers, from an epistemological point of view, the process of digital fabrication and its hyperlinks to known and simulated reality, and its ontological nature. Through documentation and methodological approach to the construction of a Moebius strip, this paper analyzes the nature and specifications of digital manufacturing. For this purpose, it makes a study of some strip properties and establishes a correlation within digital manufacturing, emphasizing similarities, complexities and shared qualities. Thus, it aims to create a reflection and a critical perspective on the complex logic of creation and simulation of knowable reality. And also it contributes to explore a theoretical corpus on the role of architects and designers in this incipient and ongoing discipline.

summary Architecture today has come to its most complex form. There are lots of criteria such as fi re safety, structure, sustainability etc… which must be controlled by the designers. To improve the performance and accessibility of buildings, governing bodies publish different codes for each of the different criteria. Buildings must comply with these codes to get a permit for construction. The checking of the buildings according the codes is done manually by code offi cials. This process is time consuming, high in cost and prone to errors. To remedy this problem by using the tools like BIM and AI, systems that can automatically check the code compliance of projects are being developed. In this paper we provide an overview of the structures and capabilities of these systems and present the automated code compliance checking system that we develop for checking building models against some parts of the Turkish Fire Codes.

summary Low Fidelity engages in the translational discrepancies that occur through mediums of architectural representation, not as instances of dilemma but as opportunities to subdue tautology and augment the seductive latency of representation(1). Where some might contend the discrepant as unlawful, the methodology that this thesis argues for engages the digital and machinic, and explores the translational discrepancies that challenge and interrupt our interface with matters of materialization and excite material propensities. The discrepant becomes a dynamic catalyst through the engagement of tools and techniques that subvert the homogeneity of digital design. Low Fidelity engages the sphere of translation by reevaluating the role of architectural representation as generator and generated its originations and its limitations. In an attempt to negotiate the digital and physical, this thesis situates itself within the feedback loop between the mediums of translation through ideas their formal logics, material propensities and back again.

summary Interpretation process is usually oriented to some purposes, e.g., for identifi cation, for explanation, for inference, for translation, etc. By the interpretation in this paper is understood not only the explanation of a confi guration of signs (symbols) in general (how it functions or how it works within a higher whole). This general interpretation is oriented in our paper to conceptual design and it is modifi ed to the goal of the solved problem. The concept of emergent situation was defi ned in general and in special case of interpretation process in conceptual design. A limited model of the description of interpretation process was introduced as a semiotic phenomenon on connections of Interpretation Space and Sign Model. Two relevant cases of interpretation process were introduced. The condition of induction of emergence in interpretation process was formulated.

summary This article refl ects on the digital reconstruction of the Vinohrady Synagogue in Prague, which was demolished in 1951. Based on an international collaboration through the Erasmus program, expertise derived from other Viennese synagogue reconstructions at TU Vienna was combined with a resource organization methodology developed at KU Leuven. The reconstruction process is carried out using BIM software, which poses some particular attention on the software methodology and model structure, but at the same time illustrates the added value of a BIM approach, when comparing with more traditional CAD modelling systematics. Of particular interest is the approach for modelling complex geometry, integrating with more traditional 2D documents and for visualizing reconstruction assumptions within the 3D model representation.

summary Knowledge of geometric drawing, hitherto considered previous in the training context in architecture, has little emphasis in the school curriculum. In the context this work, were recognized approaches such as shape grammar, which explain design practices, unveiling relationships of the geometric form. It was also identified practices of the Gestalt, established under the modern architecture, which sought to stimulate the student to have insights to think about geometric structures implicit in the form. From these references and digital tools, it is demonstrated the types of concepts and some of the exercises that are being used for the configuration of an learning for the insight.

summary The use of the method "simulation" of the microclimate for an urban site presents much of interest; because this can serve as us observation and analysis of the consequences of various scenarios relating to the existence and the importance of the constituent elements in urban space. Wind in outdoor urban space is among the most difficult parameters to identify and control field given its instability. Currently, in the field of the ventilation, there are some outdoor spaces simulation tools, used to assess the flow of the wind at different spatial scales. The aim of this research is to demonstrate the effect of the urban geometry of the layout on the wind movement and the outdoor natural ventilation. However, this study investigated the effect on outdoor thermal comfort of a building layouts in a planned residential area situated in the city of Jijel humid Mediterranean region of Algeria. In order to improve outside comfort in this open space, a 3D numerical simulation tool ENVI-met 3.1 beta 4 was used to simulate the urban thermal climate taking into account various scenarios. Thus, simulation’s results are discussed in this paper

It consists of an architectural sub-system and an information sub-system. summary This research explores the relationship between unexpected outcomes generated through parametric design tools and the design creative process. We conducted an empirical study to observe how designers behave while encountering unexpected outcomes using parametric design tools as well as other kinds of design tools. From our study, there are some indications that the space of possible design solutions of the participants was expanded with the existence of unexpected outcomes. The preliminary result is encouraging. Further studies may need to address experience designers and novice designers separately.

summary Discussion of architecture in ecological terms usually focuses on the spatial and material dimensions of design practice. Yet there is an equally critical temporal dimension in ecology that is just as relevant to design. At the micro scale is the question of 'real time' feedback from our design systems. At the macro scale is the issue of sustainability, in other words long term -- and potentially disastrous -- feedback from terrestrial ecosystems. In between are numerous different units for quantizing time in design and computation. In this paper, we examine some of these units -- 'real time', 'design time', 'development time' -- to suggest how they interact with the ecology of design technology and practice. We contextualize this discussion by reference to relevant literature from the field of ecology and to our work applying custom design and analysis tools on architectural projects within a large interdisciplinary design practice.
