summary Contemporary explorations within the evolutionary computational domain have been heavily instrumental in exploring biological processes of adaptation, growth and mutation. On the other hand a plethora of designers owing to the increasing sophistication in computer aided design software are equally enthused by the formal aspects of biological organisms and are thus meticulously involved in form driven design developments. This focus on top-down appearance and surface condition based design development under the banner of organic architecture in essence contributes to the growing misuse of bio-inspired design and the inherent meaning associated with the terminology. HyperCell, a bio-inspired information design framework for real-time adaptive spatial components, is an ongoing research, at Hyperbody, TU Delft, which focuses on extrapolating bottom-up generative design and real-time interaction based adaptive spatial re-use logics by understanding processes of adaptation, multi-performance and self sustenance in natural systems. Evolutionary developmental biology is considered as a theoretical basis for this research.

summary Ecological and environmental issues are playing an important and larger role in corporate and manufacturing strategies. For complete creative design process, buildings require both for construction and manufacturing, due to their comparatively long life cycle for maintenance, significant raw material and energy resources. Thinking in terms of product life cycles is one of the challenges facing manufacturers today. “Life Cycle Management” (LCM) considers the product life cycle as a whole and optimizes the interaction of product design, construction, manufacturing and life cycle activities. The goal of this approach is to protect resources and maximize the effectiveness during usage by means of Life Cycle Assessment, Product Data Management, Technical Support and last but not least by Life Cycle Costing. In this paper the environmental consciousness issues pertaining to design, construction, manufacturing and operations management are presented through computer intelligent technologies of this 21century. So, this paper shows the existing approaches of LCM and discusses their visions and further development.

summary The use of digital design and fabrication technologies in architecture has followed a paradigm shift, which has seen the topology, form and structure of architecture pushed to incorporate areas such as climate, construction, acoustic etc. While these digital technologies are intended to enhance the processes and performance, a discussion of aesthetics has been ignored. Surmising that the use of digital technology enhances the performability and effi ciency aspects of architecture as well as the aesthetics, this research questions what the new relationships and arrangements for structure and ornament are. What are the challenges when structure uses a process-based logic and is sensitive to materiality whereas the aesthetics has a representation-based logic and is not sensitive to materiality? The authors of this paper contribute to this debate by using the notion of tectonic as a platform for gaining and creating knowledge about this issue and examining the issues through the design and prototyping of a Multi-functional Pavilion.

title Agent Provocateur - BIM In The Academic Design Studio

summary Building Information Modeling challenges academia to question the fundamental roles of abstraction and simulation in design education. Architectural education and practice assume a traditional set of visual conventions at varied scales and levels of detail, that when taken in concert signifies a whole, complete idea of a building, a correspondence between design intent and interpretation, between the representation of ideas and the design of buildings. BIM viewed as provocateur to these assumptions provides potential critical analysis of how architectural design is taught. Academia must seek out new design methodologies for exploring architecture that reflect the representational shift of BIM by developing teaching methods that reprioritize ways of seeing, thinking and making. This paper describes a studio model that seeks out new active methods for exploring architecture that embrace this shift by developing processes that provoke novel ways to reconcile the traditions of abstraction and the opportunities of synthetic simulation.

summary This paper presents an investigation of probative works of architectural thought and production executed in various forms of digital design and computational media. The applied design research focuses on an examination of the procedure or process constructed to both develop exact, precise digital models and constructed processes that result in design outcomes that cannot be pre-visioned. The changing position of the conceptualisation within the design process continually changes the relationship of the digital work and the computational framework. The work challenges one to interpret design processes of translation and transformation, through the continual oscillation between developed in pursuit of known results and constructed methods for making, in an effort to unravel the pretext of the singular point of view to reveal the intention of the design conception(s). The projects discussed here focus on relationships between the projection of space in architectural representation and the production of architectural form through complex geometries relative to discontinuities and the way in which they agitate and alter one another. DIGITAL conception(s) operate across three primary areas of research; animation, conceptualisation and fabrication. The work oscillates between digital and physical artefacts that intertwine digital/physical workflows while simultaneously engaging temporal issues of time based media through motion graphics and animate constructs.

summary This paper discusses the use of crowdsourcing as a new approach for architectural design acquisition. We will give an overview of the concept of crowdsourcing, and elaborate on its particular application in architecture via concrete projects executed on Arcbazar, a firstof- its-kind crowdsourcing platform for architectural design services. We argue that online crowdsourcing platforms can have an immense impact on smaller-scale design challenges, e.g., home remodeling projects and landscape and interior design challenges, and can potentially carry these often neglected projects into the architectural design sphere. In this paper we will discuss the methods and techniques of architectural crowdsourcing and illustrate the processes and outcomes through a series of projects: a remodeling project for a closet; an interior design challenge for a dining space; and a layout problem for an apartment complex. We will then evaluate the protocol and outcome of architectural crowdsourcing, and convey the professional and popular media response to this new method of architectural design acquisition.

summary This paper presents a concept of origami as a form-generator for a structural system that allows deployability for structures with large spans. The presented approach studies the embedded kinetic possibilities of folded structures and focuses on a parametric modelling process that allows evaluating the structural performance of different types of the same origami family in order to optimize the geometry for a given scenario. The workfl ow between scripting based form generation – within Rhinoceros and Excel – and LS-DYNA is presented in detail. In addition to that the question of scalability from a thin microstructure to a thickened roof structure is discussed in the context of an architectural project.

summary Edible Infrastructures is an investigation into a projective mode of urbanism which considers food as an integral part of a city's metabolic infrastructure. Working with algorithms as design tools, we explore the generative potential of such a system to create an urban ecology that: provides for its residents via local, multi-scalar, distributed food production, reconnects urbanites with their food sources, and de-couples food costs from fossil fuels by limiting transportation at all levels, from source to table. The research is conducted through the building up of a sequence of algorithms, beginning with the ‘Settlement Simulation’, which couples consumers to productive surface area within a cellular automata type computational model. Topological analysis informs generative operations, as each stage builds on the output of the last. In this way we explore the hierarchical components for a new Productive City, including: the structure and programming of the urban circulatory network, an emergent urban morphology based around productive urban blocks, and opportunities for new architectural typologies. The resulting prototypical Productive City questions the underlying mechanisms that shape modern urban space and demonstrates the architectural potential of mathematical modeling and simulation in addressing complex urban spatial and programmatic challenges.

summary Customisation is one of the most important topics in architecture, as architects generally work on individual prototypes instead of mass-produced designs. By using customised design and fabrication tools, architects are able to individually respond to challenges, instead of relying on universal software tools. This paper proposes new software components for interfacing industrial robots with physical computing microcontrollers, thereby allowing the customisation of physical tools for industrial robots. By pairing physical computing with rapid prototyping, architects are able to design and prototype individual fabrication processes for industrial robots.

summary Inspired by the emergence of interactive space design and service design, this paper explores the concept of interactive service space and proposes a framework for designing interactive service space experiences. summary This paper analyses a hybrid design approach; how physical and digital processes can inform each other in a multivalent design cycle. It describes the design of origami-inspired window shades, part of the Shaping Light project that explores how adjustable surface structures can modulate light levels and heat gain in response to the changing seasons. The screen uses sloped surfaces to diffuse light and create apertures that close when the screen is stretched and open when the screen is folded. The project complements digital methods for pattern proportioning and kinetic simulation with manual manipulation to generate 3D folding motifs and refi ne assemblies. Physical prototypes can shape digital refi nement by revealing visual and structural characteristics of materials, along with joint and production considerations. Physical models for simulating sunny and cloudy daylighting conditions provide a direct connection between spatial confi guration and visual effects. The paper concludes with guidelines for material-based digital-analog creation.

summary The research topic of this paper exemplifies design optimization techniques of a hotel/office tower in Central China (Nanjing city), which faces subtropical humid climate throughout the year. The main intent of the project is to fi nd optimized design solution with the aid of parametric design tools and Visual Basic Scripting techniques (in Rhino Script & Grasshopper) combined with intuitive design process. In any urban context, we firmly believe that architectural design is a responsive phenomenon, which faces diverse interaction with the user & the local climate. The building design of the proposed tower acknowledges these responsive factors of the design with the environment along with building users or residents. Consequently, we strive to develop a sustainable design solution, which is ecologically efficient and psychologically conducive to the wellbeing of the user. We developed our intuitive design product with complex computational design toolsets to leverage design and energy efficiency. In this procedure, we draw major design concepts and geometrical typologies from natural systems in the form of bio mimicry or biologically inspired design process. Overall, this research paper outlines the significance and relevant benefi ts of the combination of intuitive design (from experience, expertise and architects skills) with parametric scripting tools.

summary Architects by profession, Christian Derix and Asmund Gamlesæter are interested in expanding the capabilities of digital technology to inform, support and enrich the design process in architecture and spatial planning. The computational prototypes they develop range from form studies to visualization of complex processes in spatial planning such as movement behaviors of people in a city. They work analytically as well as generatively and the approach is deeply affected by the understanding that computing systems should not define solutions but offer creative freedom and create a symbiosis between the designer and the algorithmic intelligence. They are rather designed to help the designer view the design problem and consequences of decisions from different perspectives. Encouraging the designer to play through different narratives. They are rather tools for thinking through multiple solutions and allow the designer to play with the possibilities. The generation of the final design is inspired and validated by the tools but remains in the hands of the designer.

summary The digital revolution has finally reached urban design as one of the last design communities not very familiar with computing. This is despite the city and geography being the natural fields for systems analogy and digital models of mathematical and statistical simulation were developed in the 60s and 70s for urban planning, much before industrial or architectural design. The recent arrival of urban design simulations is however not as innovative and radical as their 50 year old counterparts since they use computing solely for policy visualization, quantity evaluation or pattern generation. The Computational Design and Research Group [CDR] at Aedas|R&D started in 2007 to develop an open platform of lightweight applications – Digital Masterplanning – in collaboration with partners from academia and industry to provide methods for urban design, based on computational methods called meta-heuristic algorithms. An attempt to encode empirical knowledge and design assumptions into simulations is described where designers can assemble the resulting applications according to scales and brief into custom workflows.

summary The fundamental processes in living systems can be a potential resource to derive nonlinear relationships that could find application in the design of responsive surface from an architectural standpoint. This research focuses on deriving a parametric relationship from a phenomenon in cell biology to generate an architectural expression of responsive surface/ façade. It further delineates the dynamic feedback mechanism from the environment and user as control factors. Through extensive investigation of cell-to-cell connections in the mammary epithelial cells and review of evident relay of communication across the entire system of cells, we could unfold the logical parameters of the biological system. Parametric modelling indicating the causality of the surface condition, changes with the change in extracellular matrix. This gives an opportunity to manoeuvre the surface parameters, contrary to the involuntary cell environment where the behaviours are under the control of a physiological process. Architecturally, the dynamic relationship of surface in a hybridised model, explains that interactivity is not a mere one to one response to a stimulus. Evidently, this interactive process can be a sophisticated loop of feedback through different materiality and componentry that play their effects (and are played back) by “active” surfaces.

summary This project is an exploration into the design & fabrication process of a canopy structure derived from the notion of pluripotency. The term is widely used in the context of stem cells in biological science where pluripotency is referred to the potential of a stem cell to develop into more than one type of mature cell, depending on environment. These can be re-interpreted architecturally as, the quality of design components or elements to be radically transformed into one or more different kinds of components, keeping the general structural integrity of the design unchanged (Kolatan, 2009). summary This research intends to illustrate a nonlinear relationship that could be drawn between the fundamental processes in living systems and architectural design of responsive surface.The research focuses on deriving a set of parametric relationships from the phenomenon in cell biology and generating an architectural expression of a responsive fac_ade system.The research methods primarily investigates the cell – to – cell connection in mammary epithelial cell system and review the evident relay of communication across the entire system of cells .This thorough investigation unfolds the logical parameters of the biological system that delineates the dynamic feedback mechanism and changes in the cell surface conditions initiated from the changes in the extra - cellular environment (ECM).The research findings of this complex mechanism are further translated though parametric modeling tool (in this case Generative Components) to model the causalities of the changes in cell environment and surface condition changes. In the next phase of our research we have explored the architectural utility of this hybridized model operating in a user defined controlled environ, and not just a mere response to biological stimulus.
