title The Ornaments of Shoowa Kuba: A digital re-interpretation of a textile art

summary This paper will discuss how Shoowa Kuba textiles could be analyzed as an ornament that can be digitally constructed and applied in design. An historical outline of ornament is provided by briefly comparing Classical and Gothic ornaments. This theoretical framework is then compared to the art of Shoowa Kuba focusing on their textile embroideries. Various patterns and techniques will be introduced showing how Kuba people implement rules as well as how they break them. These patterns will be digitally reconstructed to show their applicability to the digital design domain.

summary Digital manufacturing in both as art and technology is a new way of designing, re-creation and re-invention of reality. This paper considers, from an epistemological point of view, the process of digital fabrication and its hyperlinks to known and simulated reality, and its ontological nature. Through documentation and methodological approach to the construction of a Moebius strip, this paper analyzes the nature and specifications of digital manufacturing. For this purpose, it makes a study of some strip properties and establishes a correlation within digital manufacturing, emphasizing similarities, complexities and shared qualities. Thus, it aims to create a reflection and a critical perspective on the complex logic of creation and simulation of knowable reality. And also it contributes to explore a theoretical corpus on the role of architects and designers in this incipient and ongoing discipline.

summary The paper describes a new implementation of an existing course on digital design and its contribution to the curriculum of the undergraduate pre-professional architecture program at Ball State University. The strategic thinking behind the re-design of this course refl ects not only the need to update its content to reflect the state-of-the art in the domain but also responds to a diversifi ed context that exhibitschanging trends due to digital culture, use of digital media in learning and practice, and educational policy. The paper elaborates on these larger contextual elements and describes the new instructional methods implemented through a modular framework of assignments and a multi-layered delivery system. The paper concludes with a series of recommendations for the future improvement, constant assessment, and further development of the digital design course.

title Digital Girih, A Digital Interpretation of Islamic Architecture

summary The relation between texture, pattern and massing is a fundamental question in architecture. Classical architecture, as Leon Battista Alberti states in De Re Aedificatoria, Book VI, Chapter 2, is developed through massing and structure first; texture is added afterwards to give the bold massing and structure beauty [I]. This hierarchy has of course been challenged throughout architecture history. This paper will provide a different thinking of the relationship of massing and texture in Islamic Architecture from a digital point of view. An analysis of Islamic patterns challenged this relationship in Islamic architecture. Digital design and fabrication methods for a series of studies and an installation were used to respond to the findings of the analysis.

summary The emergence of quasi-periodic tiling theories in mathematics and material science is revealing a new class of symmetry, which had never been accessible before. Because of their astounding visual and structural properties, quasi-periodic symmetries can be ideally suited for many applications in art and architecture; providing a rich source of ideas for articulating form, pattern, surface and structure. However, since their discovery, the unique long-range order of quasi-periodic symmetries, is still posing a perplexing puzzle. As rule-based systems, the ability to algorithmically generate these complicated symmetries can be instrumental in understanding and manipulating their geometry. Recently, the discovery of quasi-periodic patterns in ancient Islamic architecture is providing a unique example of how ancient mathematics can inform our understanding of some basic theories in modern science. The recent investigation into these complex and chaotic formations is providing evidence to show that ancient designers, by using the most primitive tools (a compass and a straightedge) were able to resolve the complicated long-range principles of ten-fold quasi-periodic formations. Derived from these ancient principles, this paper presents a computational model for describing the long-range order of octagon-based quasi-periodic formations. The objective of the study is to design an algorithm for constructing large patches of octagon-based quasi-crystalline formations. The proposed algorithm is proven to be successful in producing an infinite and defect-free covering of the two-dimensional plane.

summary The application of digital design methods and technologies related to BIM and Integrated Practice Delivery are altering the how and what of architectural design. The way contemporary architecture is conceived and made is being transformed through the digital methods, processes and applications used in BIM. How architectural education and the design studio model evolve to reflect, interpret, translate, or challenge the multiplicitous and simultaneously variable modes of contemporary practice present opportunity and risk to this generation of digital scholars, educators and practitioners. Might we re-conceive the design studio as a venue in which a critical dialogue about how the many facets of architectural design practice are engaged? The possibilities afforded by BIM and Integrated Practice Delivery and digital design technologies are increasingly affecting what we make and simultaneously how we make as architects. Digital modeling of both geometry and information is replacing (or displacing) digital drawing. We see diminishing returns of the value of transforming three-dimensional spatial/formal ideas into two-dimensional conventional abstractions of those complex ideas. This comprehensive thinking promoted by BIM processes is one of the key advantages of using BIM leading to true design innovation. The reiterative learning process of design promoted in BIM promotes a rethinking of design studio education.

summary Architecture today has come to its most complex form. There are lots of criteria such as fi re safety, structure, sustainability etc… which must be controlled by the designers. To improve the performance and accessibility of buildings, governing bodies publish different codes for each of the different criteria. Buildings must comply with these codes to get a permit for construction. The checking of the buildings according the codes is done manually by code offi cials. This process is time consuming, high in cost and prone to errors. To remedy this problem by using the tools like BIM and AI, systems that can automatically check the code compliance of projects are being developed. In this paper we provide an overview of the structures and capabilities of these systems and present the automated code compliance checking system that we develop for checking building models against some parts of the Turkish Fire Codes.

summary Interpretation process is usually oriented to some purposes, e.g., for identifi cation, for explanation, for inference, for translation, etc. By the interpretation in this paper is understood not only the explanation of a confi guration of signs (symbols) in general (how it functions or how it works within a higher whole). This general interpretation is oriented in our paper to conceptual design and it is modifi ed to the goal of the solved problem. The concept of emergent situation was defi ned in general and in special case of interpretation process in conceptual design. A limited model of the description of interpretation process was introduced as a semiotic phenomenon on connections of Interpretation Space and Sign Model. Two relevant cases of interpretation process were introduced. The condition of induction of emergence in interpretation process was formulated.

summary Contemporary explorations within the evolutionary computational domain have been heavily instrumental in exploring biological processes of adaptation, growth and mutation. On the other hand a plethora of designers owing to the increasing sophistication in computer aided design software are equally enthused by the formal aspects of biological organisms and are thus meticulously involved in form driven design developments. This focus on top-down appearance and surface condition based design development under the banner of organic architecture in essence contributes to the growing misuse of bio-inspired design and the inherent meaning associated with the terminology. HyperCell, a bio-inspired information design framework for real-time adaptive spatial components, is an ongoing research, at Hyperbody, TU Delft, which focuses on extrapolating bottom-up generative design and real-time interaction based adaptive spatial re-use logics by understanding processes of adaptation, multi-performance and self sustenance in natural systems. Evolutionary developmental biology is considered as a theoretical basis for this research.

summary The research presented further is part of the Digital Alberti research project, which aims to assess the infl uence of Leon Batista Alberti’s theory on Portuguese architecture, through the use of digital technologies. One of the project tasks implied computational and physical modelling of Alberti’s column system. Development of the computational model implied decoding Alberti’s treatise on architecture De re aedifi catoria into a consistent set of parameters and relationships, and then implementing these into generative parametric computer programs through visual programming language Grasshopper. This computational model is able to automatically generate physical models of classical columns according to Alberti’s canons. These digital models were then materialized through production of physical models, through rapid prototyping and digital fabrication technologies. Special attention is given to the CNC stone milling of a Corinthian capital.

summary The indoor climate in buildings of the museum is related to two important requirements: preservation of collections and comfort of users. To provide environmental compatibility through a volumetric energy efficient, this paper proposes a parametric model which is based on a study of three buildings in this climate. summary This paper is part of an ongoing research that analyzes the housing projects of the Dutch office MVRDV through their theoretical research and design processes. The text focuses on the use of parametric software according to two key aspects that qualify their production: research and conceptual creative potential. Since the late 1990s, the architects are positioning their practice under a strategy that combines collection, processing and interpretation of large amounts of data, what means the conversion of statistical information into concrete and inventive form. With this demand the office developed parametric software as Regionmaker, the case study presented here.

summary This paper reports on the initial findings of an Undergraduate Research on Social Housing Program implemented in the city of Limeira, making use of a Building Information Modeling platform as a methodological procedure. The research was designed to enable students to better understand BIM in a hands-on, collaborative environment. A virtual information model of Housing Units and Housing Complex was created, and represents their real physical building components. The initial results portray BIM as especially useful to Civil Construction students, as fostering an integral environment where students are readily enabled to synthesize the knowledge of the art of construction.
