title Spatial ability, creativity, and studio performance in architectural design

summary Architectural design is a multifaceted discipline that requires many abilities, in particular creativity and spatial ability. In order to identify the relationships among spatial ability, creativity, and studio performance, an exploratory study was conducted at one Midwestern university in the USA. Twenty-one freshman architecture students participated in the study, which involved three tasks: (a) the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking that measures fluency and originality in creativity, (b) a group of general spatial ability tests, and (c) the computer-based Architectural Spatial Ability Test. Students’ scores on the tasks were compared with their studio performance grades using SPSS. Results show that studio performance correlated with the ASAT but did not correlate with the TTCT or a group of general spatial ability tests. These findings indicate that a student’s performing well does not necessarily mean that she or he can generate many different alternatives (fluency) or original ideas (originality) nor that the student possesses general spatial abilities. The findings show the complexity of architectural design components and reveal beginning design students’ architectural abilities.

title 3D urban space information system: A preliminary prototype based on Google Earth plugin

summary 2D GIS has shown its limitations in many situations, especially when it’s applied in urban design. Many studies have been carried out to deal with the problem. Some attempted to link 3D visualisation to data stored within 2D GIS, and others tried to combine GIS, CAD and visualisation together. They all aim to meliorate current GIS for 3D applications. The authors of this paper developed a preliminary prototype of a 3D urban space information system based on Google Earth Plugin. It sets up a server to store and offer specific urban space information. With the desktop application that embeds Google Earth Plugin, user can upload and download models on the server, view them in the virtual 3D environment of Google earth, and make models directly in the 3D environment. A server-side database plays the role of managing information. This paper introduces the key ideas and methods of the system development, including system structure, set-up of the serve, server side information management, and interactive modelling functions.

title How Biomimetic Approach Enlarges Morphological Solution Space

summary Ordinarily, high-speed train design methodology has been modeled to guide designer’s problem solving and design thinking. However, the current methodology cannot guide designers in very detail due to the reason of the difficulties in bridging gap between pure engineering-knowledge and design-knowledge. In other words, these two knowledge are disconnected each other in a whole frame of design process. But, the paradigm shift that was induced by biomimetic approach has demanded an interdisciplinary approach for a generation of new geometrical characteristics that were impossible to be handled in the current design methodology. In this research, as a case study, we quantify the front-head design of high-speed trains to check the impacts of biomimetic approach. Quantitative methodology of the landmark based morphometric design analysis is introduced and adapted on the study.

summary This paper proposes a computer-aided design system for modular houses, focusing on component reusability. By resolving user-designed house layout into its component elements, and producing lists of reusable elements and those necessary to purchase, the system assists users in need of making design changes in their modular house. The application of the strategies described here may reduce human efforts in complicated process of re-arranging components according to new layout design and help to increase the reuse of module components in practice.

summary The paper presents a future architectural detailing strategy enabled by the design of functionally graded materials (FGM). In specific, our proposal suggests the possibility of removing mechanical fasteners and adhesives from joint details. This is achieved by combining the principles of interlocking joineries found in traditional timber structures and current Multi-Material Additive Manufacturing (MMAM) technology to materialise FGMs. FGM belongs to a class of advanced materials characterised by variation in properties as the dimension varies by combining two or more materials at a microscopic scale (Mahamood et al. 2012). FGM is ubiquitous in nature and, when properly designed, can exhibit superior performance characteristics compared to objects comprised of homogeneous material properties. With the aim of developing interlocking details with improved performance, reliability, and design flexibility, we focus on controlling material stiffness, joint fitting, and geometry through the design of the microscopic material layout. A case study design will be presented to illustrate the process.

summary Physical Digitality is the second volume of the conference proceedings of the 30th eCAADe conference, held from 12-14 september 2012 in Prague at the Faculty of Architecture of Czech Technical University in Prague. The companion volume is called Digital Physicality. Together, both volumes contain 154 papers that were submitted to this conference. Digitality is the condition of living in a world where ubiquitous information and communication technology is embedded in the physical world. Although it is possible to point out what is “digital” and what is “real,” the distinction has become pointless, and it has no more explanatory power for our environment, buildings, and behaviour. Material objects are invested with communication possibilities, teams are communicating even when not together, and buildings can sense and respond to the environment, each other, and to inhabitants. Digital is no longer an add-on, extra, or separate software. Reality is partly digital and partly physical. The implication of this condition is not clear however, and it is necessary to investigate its potential. New strategies are necessary that acknowledge the synergetic qualities of the physical and the digital. This is not limited to our designs but it also infl uences the process, methods, and what or how we teach. The subdivision of papers in these volumes follow the distinction made in the conference theme. The papers in Physical Digitality have their orientation mainly in the physical realm, and reach towards the digital part. It has to be granted that this distinction is rather crude, because working from two extremes (digital versus physical) tends to ignore the arguably most interesting middle ground.

summary This paper investigates the relation between the shading condition and geometrical configuration of neighborhood-scale developments. It introduces a straightforward method for measuring shadow areas casted on buildings’ roofs and facades – in urban areas – using digital 3D models. Employing this method for measuring shadow areas in nine neighborhoods in Jinan, China, at six different time points on summer and winter solstices – a total of 54 sample measurements – this study develops two regression models that reveal the significant dependency of the in-shadow percentage of buildings’ façade and roof areas to the building volume density (BVD) and height irregularity (HI) of the urban fabric.

summary A parametric urban design system integrating GIS data in a CAD environment is proposed as a platform for discussing urban plans providing flexibility and information access in an interactive fashion. summary Agent-oriented modelling is one of the simulation methods for emergent behavior of a complex system that could be considered for application of urban city structures. Using advanced script techniques, the behavior and evolution of structures in the bottom-up strategies for the development of environment could be simulated in architecture and urbanism as well. The paper presents a research subproject in the area of verifi cation of the processes of spatial and social interaction of the agents according to the logic of defined intrinsic rules of Swarm behavior in the simulation model of the selected area. The research builds mainly upon two selected requirements of the bottom-up strategy: the approach distances to places of interest and mutual standoff distances between urban elements.

summary The research presented further is part of the Digital Alberti research project, which aims to assess the infl uence of Leon Batista Alberti’s theory on Portuguese architecture, through the use of digital technologies. One of the project tasks implied computational and physical modelling of Alberti’s column system. Development of the computational model implied decoding Alberti’s treatise on architecture De re aedifi catoria into a consistent set of parameters and relationships, and then implementing these into generative parametric computer programs through visual programming language Grasshopper. This computational model is able to automatically generate physical models of classical columns according to Alberti’s canons. These digital models were then materialized through production of physical models, through rapid prototyping and digital fabrication technologies. Special attention is given to the CNC stone milling of a Corinthian capital.

summary The research topic of this paper exemplifies design optimization techniques of a hotel/office tower in Central China (Nanjing city), which faces subtropical humid climate throughout the year. The main intent of the project is to fi nd optimized design solution with the aid of parametric design tools and Visual Basic Scripting techniques (in Rhino Script & Grasshopper) combined with intuitive design process. In any urban context, we firmly believe that architectural design is a responsive phenomenon, which faces diverse interaction with the user & the local climate. The building design of the proposed tower acknowledges these responsive factors of the design with the environment along with building users or residents. Consequently, we strive to develop a sustainable design solution, which is ecologically efficient and psychologically conducive to the wellbeing of the user. We developed our intuitive design product with complex computational design toolsets to leverage design and energy efficiency. In this procedure, we draw major design concepts and geometrical typologies from natural systems in the form of bio mimicry or biologically inspired design process. Overall, this research paper outlines the significance and relevant benefi ts of the combination of intuitive design (from experience, expertise and architects skills) with parametric scripting tools.

summary The consideration about contemporary urban spaces incorporates a set of investigations linked to spatial implementation of digital technologies. This paper is about the different ways in which tangible computational interfaces have been arranged in urban environments, be they projections onto urban surfaces, interactive façades, or even architecture and interactive and/or responsive urban objects. It examines the nature of this phenomenon from perspectives presented by different authors and based on systematized information on a wide array of interfaces. It also posits some significant attributes that should be taken into account when performing a close examination of these interventions. Its aim is to contribute theoretical explorations to the study of hybrid urban spaces.

summary The fundamental processes in living systems can be a potential resource to derive nonlinear relationships that could find application in the design of responsive surface from an architectural standpoint. This research focuses on deriving a parametric relationship from a phenomenon in cell biology to generate an architectural expression of responsive surface/ façade. It further delineates the dynamic feedback mechanism from the environment and user as control factors. Through extensive investigation of cell-to-cell connections in the mammary epithelial cells and review of evident relay of communication across the entire system of cells, we could unfold the logical parameters of the biological system. Parametric modelling indicating the causality of the surface condition, changes with the change in extracellular matrix. This gives an opportunity to manoeuvre the surface parameters, contrary to the involuntary cell environment where the behaviours are under the control of a physiological process. Architecturally, the dynamic relationship of surface in a hybridised model, explains that interactivity is not a mere one to one response to a stimulus. Evidently, this interactive process can be a sophisticated loop of feedback through different materiality and componentry that play their effects (and are played back) by “active” surfaces.

summary This research intends to illustrate a nonlinear relationship that could be drawn between the fundamental processes in living systems and architectural design of responsive surface.The research focuses on deriving a set of parametric relationships from the phenomenon in cell biology and generating an architectural expression of a responsive fac_ade system.The research methods primarily investigates the cell – to – cell connection in mammary epithelial cell system and review the evident relay of communication across the entire system of cells .This thorough investigation unfolds the logical parameters of the biological system that delineates the dynamic feedback mechanism and changes in the cell surface conditions initiated from the changes in the extra - cellular environment (ECM).The research findings of this complex mechanism are further translated though parametric modeling tool (in this case Generative Components) to model the causalities of the changes in cell environment and surface condition changes. In the next phase of our research we have explored the architectural utility of this hybridized model operating in a user defined controlled environ, and not just a mere response to biological stimulus.

summary The challenge of developing adaptive, responsive low-energy architecture requires new knowledge about the complex and dynamic interaction between envelope architecture and optimisation between competing environmental performance metrics. Advances in modelling the geometry of building envelopes and control technologies for adaptive buildings now permit the sophisticated evaluation of alternative envelope configurations for a set of performance criteria. This paper reports on a study of the parametric control of a building envelope based on moveable façade components, acting as a shading device to reduce thermal gain within the building. This is investigated using a novel pentagonal tiling strategy considering the component design, tessellation and control methods.

summary This paper presents a discussion of contemporary interactive media façades that complements the currently primarily technical framing of this field of research. Media façades, in the form of digitally orchestrated façade illumination, are discussed here as sites of potential encounter and interaction that form part of the public sphere. These aspects seem both underestimated as well as underused as media façades tend to be limited to pre-programmed and primarily ornamental trivial response patterns, or to serving as oversized displays. This paper discusses media façades from an architectural rather than a technological perspective and critically assesses the promises of interactivity as well as implications of such façades on urban public space.

summary This article is a starting point for the development of experiential urban co-design interfaces to enhance public participation in local urban projects and to be also used as a communication and collaboration tool in urban design. It is based on the previous research involving 3D city models utilized as understandable design interfaces for the non-technical public (Jutraz, Zupancic, 2011), where we have already explored different views (pedestrian, intermediate and bird’s-eye view), as well as the means by which the information obtained from these different views may be combined by shifting between viewpoints. Previous work was conducted in the “street lab” as well as the Urban Experimental Lab, which was developed specifi cally for the public’s participation in urban planning (Voigt, Kieferle, Wössner, 2009). Presented in this article is the next step that explores the immersive collaboration environment 3D ICC [1], formerly known as Teleplace. The environment was developed for effi cient collaboration and remote communication and shifts the research focus towards questions regarding how to employ both labs as interfaces between the non-technical public and design professionals. As we are facing the lack of digital systems for public participation and education in urban design, different digital tools for communication and collaboration should be combined into a new holistic platform for design. A digital system of tools needs to be developed that supports the urban design decision-making process and focuses on improved final solutions and increased satisfaction amongst all participants. In this article the system of digital tools for public participation, which include communication, collaboration and education, will be also defi ned, with its basic characteristics and its elements.

summary Based on the experience from EU project ARCHI21 (Hunter et al, 2011) and long-term commitment to research of architectural presentations and educational approaches to expert and non-expert public (i.e. Juvancic, Mullins & Zupancic, 2012), the paper aims to clarify the terms used in CLIL-architecture context, identify the variables that have, in practice so far, proven to infl uence the learning outcome and learning experience both in architectural and language sense, and systematize the findings into the useful system. The result can be envisioned as the potential ‘ladder of the CLIL & architecture integration‘. The system would be of help to anyone trying to integrate language learning at different stages of architectural education, pointing out the required fundamentals, predicting the possible learning outcomes or benchmarking them after the experience. The basic terms/variables divided into three major infl uencing groups - competence, work environment and course settings - are described first, proceeded with the scheme connecting them into the system and two actual examples ‘run’ through the matrix for illustrative purposes. The paper also looks specifi cally into the use of different immersive environments and digital communication tools for teaching the architecture/design–other language combination and adapts the system to this segment, while also briefly comments on learners and teachers responses to CLIL-architecture integration.
