summary This proposed paper presents the results of a real world demo of adaptive urban lighting in a pedestrian oriented street in the core centre of a northern city of 65°01’ latitude, Oulu, Finland. The case project – LightStories (Valotarina) – explores the methods to enable city dwellers to participate in the design of public urban lighting, as well as interaction and communication through urban lighting. It applies a web-based design tool which offers city dwellers the possibility to design one hour long light animations to be displayed along a pedestrian oriented street. In addition to describing the design and development process of the lighting system and the participatory design tools used in this case, the paper presents general discussion about the process and tools, and also about the role of algorithm aided methods in enabling the user participation in lighting design with the tool.

summary The three-dimensional reconstitution of cities and urban tissues was the subject of several studies and researches. In order to obtain the acquisition of the geometry of architectural or urban sets, some studies are based on Photogrammetric or on computer vision. Others have focused on the development of tools of acquisition from a laser providing a 3D scatter plot. Some of them yet focused towards the development of CAD software. The automatic generation for morphological 3D representation based on the exploitation of the architectural knowledge basis is also an option. This type of work becomes more relevant and legitimate when it concerns old cities in state of ruin or more simply missing whose remains only prints or literary descriptions similar to our case study; the old town of Jijel that many people ignore its existence. The aim of this work is to achieve a 3D reconstitution of buildings of this town based on historical documents, mostly prints, digitized old maps and plans, as well as literary texts (tales of travelers, military records, and history books). The method developed can solve and generate possible urban volumes in the most frequent cases. The 3D model obtained, despite its geometric simplicity, can view the city from different angles and open new opportunities for research in history, architecture and town planning.

summary The research topic of this paper exemplifies design optimization techniques of a hotel/office tower in Central China (Nanjing city), which faces subtropical humid climate throughout the year. The main intent of the project is to fi nd optimized design solution with the aid of parametric design tools and Visual Basic Scripting techniques (in Rhino Script & Grasshopper) combined with intuitive design process. In any urban context, we firmly believe that architectural design is a responsive phenomenon, which faces diverse interaction with the user & the local climate. The building design of the proposed tower acknowledges these responsive factors of the design with the environment along with building users or residents. Consequently, we strive to develop a sustainable design solution, which is ecologically efficient and psychologically conducive to the wellbeing of the user. We developed our intuitive design product with complex computational design toolsets to leverage design and energy efficiency. In this procedure, we draw major design concepts and geometrical typologies from natural systems in the form of bio mimicry or biologically inspired design process. Overall, this research paper outlines the significance and relevant benefi ts of the combination of intuitive design (from experience, expertise and architects skills) with parametric scripting tools.

summary The present paper tries to explore the potential of visual-heavy tools in the creation of virtual reality worlds, with an emphasis on tools borrowed from 3d electronic games. Compared to earlier approaches in virtual reality creation the paper focuses on game design tools and provides a basic framework for interaction in virtual reality, based on classic rather than digital representations, which is then expanded using digital representations. In the second part of the paper a game creation tool is assessed based on its potential not only of usability but also on guiding the designer in specific paths to designing virtual worlds. The assessment is based on a case study of interaction design.

summary This article is a starting point for the development of experiential urban co-design interfaces to enhance public participation in local urban projects and to be also used as a communication and collaboration tool in urban design. It is based on the previous research involving 3D city models utilized as understandable design interfaces for the non-technical public (Jutraz, Zupancic, 2011), where we have already explored different views (pedestrian, intermediate and bird’s-eye view), as well as the means by which the information obtained from these different views may be combined by shifting between viewpoints. Previous work was conducted in the “street lab” as well as the Urban Experimental Lab, which was developed specifi cally for the public’s participation in urban planning (Voigt, Kieferle, Wössner, 2009). Presented in this article is the next step that explores the immersive collaboration environment 3D ICC [1], formerly known as Teleplace. The environment was developed for effi cient collaboration and remote communication and shifts the research focus towards questions regarding how to employ both labs as interfaces between the non-technical public and design professionals. As we are facing the lack of digital systems for public participation and education in urban design, different digital tools for communication and collaboration should be combined into a new holistic platform for design. A digital system of tools needs to be developed that supports the urban design decision-making process and focuses on improved final solutions and increased satisfaction amongst all participants. In this article the system of digital tools for public participation, which include communication, collaboration and education, will be also defi ned, with its basic characteristics and its elements.

summary This paper presents an inverse pedestrian urban design method and an initial set of parametric tools for conceptual design support at the pedestrian urban scale. Inverse pedestrian urban design concerns the derivation of urban design parameters from a local context in order to produce better informed and situated designs. The tools concern the rationalization of street network and building form. Some of the parameters that are used within the tools are view angles (visibility analysis) and distances between target points (accessibility analysis). The paper elaborates on inverse urban design, presents some case studies and tools, and touches upon design patterns and their alignment to design processes.

summary In recent years several solar radiation simulation tools have been developed to assist architects in analyzing the performance of existing building designs. However it is often unclear how the results of these analyses can help to generate new solutions and thus be truly beneficial for innovation in sustainable architectural design. Recent developments in open source applications that allow links between energy simulation engines and 3D modeling environments open a new layer of understanding. The possibility to better understand the dynamic interaction between incident solar radiation and building envelopes allows the synthesis of new architectural design-schemes. This paper presents the results of a series of experiments based on the case-study of a mid-latitude single-family house in Taiki-Cho, Japan. The first experiment describes how the incident solar energy interacts with the exposed components of the envelope. The second experiment describes how the energy demand of the building can be partially reduced through the design of passive interventions that are based on the dynamics of the demand. Finally, the third experiment exemplifies how, based on the knowledge extracted from the first two experiments, it is possible to synthesize new dynamics-related solar design-schemes that join passive techniques, active technologies, and formal aspects.

summary Evolution and innovation in architecture are intensely related to the rise and developments of technology. Within this context, it is possible to recognize how in recent decades this milieu has fostered the development of new methodologies for urban design and architectural practice, as is, for example, the Parameterization. This paper is focused on the subject of Parametric Urbanism: discussing / questioning the emergence of this new architectural methodology; addressing the factors that contributed to its appearance; and seeking to understand whether the parametric approach has benefits and whether it may or may not be a solution or of assistance to urban planning. The paper provides a brief literature review focused on parametric urbanism and then it presents a practical case study of parametric urbanism: an Urban Plan in Beijing, developed in an academic context, at the University École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in 2012. Having as base diverse examples of parametric urbanism, it is tried to identify/justify decisions defining principles and application guidance for this project. The conclusion presents the final considerations based on opposing the case study with the theoretical approach, seeking to clarify whether this new kind of urban design methodology, Parametric Urbanism, is or not viable.

summary Sketches and working models are without doubt one of the most widely used tools in the architect’s repertoire. In the early phases of the design process in particular, they represent an essential part of the exploration process. For the most part, however, sketching and model building are separate and sequential steps. This paper examines how both media can be linked to each other more effectively so that the design process is more continuous and the transition between the two media more fluid. Using a multi-touch table with additional 3D real-time object recognition, a prototypical system was developed and realised as part of a research project in which an interactive 3D sketching tool was linked with a real 3D working model.

summary As the current digitally-mediated architectural practice evolves, architectural models, regardless of their expressiveness or type, are a way to craft the interaction between the designer and the designed object. Models become artefacts that engage on a continuous interaction with the designer via different media, interpretation and knowledge retrieval schemes, organizational fl ows and tools. These interactions have recently been facilitated by the use of physical and digital production and analysis methods. In this report, we introduce a novel understanding of the relationships between physical and digital modelling techniques. We propose an updated framework that allocates these relationships into four categories: directed production, non-directed production, dual modelling, and mixed modelling. A review of different modelling classifications and frameworks is presented and exemplary case studies from the design domain are introduced for each category.

summary Lack of affordable housing is a worldwide problem. Rapid urbanization, rural exodus, and poor governance policies have contributed to the problem and, in response, low-income populations resort to self-construction. The result are informal settlements located predominantly in marginalized urban areas (United Nations, 2015) that develop with neither urban infrastructure nor compliance with building and planning codes (Lall et al., 2006; Patel et al., 2018; United Nations Human Settlements Programme, 2012) and, consequently, offer a poor-quality built environment. The goal of this paper is to methodologically identify physical aspects of such built environments that could be improved. We evaluate a case study, the Santa Marta favela in Brazil, using a holistic housing-quality assessment tool and local building and planning codes as reference. Our results identify the physical characteristics with lower quality standards in the case study and demonstrate the efficacy of the methodology introduced for this purpose.

title Civic Media Platforms and Participatory Urbanism: A Critical Reflection

summary In this paper, we explicate our research on technology-mediated urban experience specific to two hyper-local tests in which the space of the ‘public’ is transformed into a virtual network by connective broadcasting. The first case study presents collective mapping in Rio de Janeiro toward increased civic engagement and sustainability, the second tests documentation of political demonstrations for strategic and archival purposes for Occupy Boston. Grouped under the term “participatory urbanism,” the projects intend to explore how an individual activates interstitial space (between the physical city and hovering networks, between public and private) by engaging technology and civic media to affect change in the built environment. The physical and virtual environments serve as reciprocal sources of information, engendering a collective practice of shared encounters. We investigate how such encounters of user-centered activity through mobile and web-based media support or implicate the perception and manipulation of the built environment over spans of time and locations, and will highlight qualitative elements of a mobile and web platform designed for successful civic engagement and participatory urbanism.

summary In this paper, we will discuss the potentials of affordable Geoweb 2.0 technologies. We will reveal two affordable open-source collaborative mapping frameworks and explore their potentials, strengths and weaknesses through two different field implementations in the form of case studies. Refl ecting on our experiences with these cases we will compare the two technological frameworks in terms of participation and mapping support as well as data security, cross-browser compatibility, interface customizability, import-export capability and required level of expertise for setup and management. Moreover, with a designerly lens, we will discuss the levels of design empowerment in two cases in relation with user profi les and pre-designated contribution styles. Finally, we will identify open challenges and suggest future directions.

summary This paper presents and discusses results related to a full-scale responsive urban lighting experiment and introduces a light design methodology inspired by reactive control strategies in robot systems. The experiment investigates how human motion intensities can be used as input to light design in a reactive system. Using video from 3 thermal cameras and computer vision analysis; people’s flow patterns were monitored and send as input into a reactive light system. Using physical as well as digital models 4 different light scenarios is designed and tested in full-scale. Results show that people on the square did not engage in the changing illumination and often they did not realized that the light changed according to their presence. However from the edge of the square people observed the light patterns “painted” on the city square, as such people became actors on the urban stage, often without knowing. Furthermore did the experiment showcase power savings up to 90% depending on the response strategy.

title Adaptive Distributed Robotics for Environmental Performance, Occupant Comfort and Architectural Expression

summary The integration of adaptive distributed robotics in architectural design has the potential to improve building energy performance while simultaneously increasing occupant comfort. In addition, conceiving buildings as dynamic systems with the ability to adapt to the changing environments in which they exist, opens new aesthetic possibilities for designers. As the façade of a building is a common place to address issues of energy performance and occupant comfort, this paper presents a first prototype of an adaptive solar envelope (ASE). Its functions are to provide distributed shading, solar power generation through integrated photovoltaics, and daylight distribution. We describe the interdisciplinary design process, and illustrate the architectural possibilities that arise from a distributed systems approach. The ASE is expanded to work in parallel with an adaptive artificial lighting element. Rather than being preprogrammed, the systems adapt their behavior through interaction with the environment and building occupants. This adaptation to the user's wishes is demonstrated successfully for the artificial light controller. We argue that with presently available technology and an increased exposure of architecture students and practitioners to adaptive design techniques, adaptive architectures will soon become a regular element of the built environment.

summary The use of Virtual Reality (VR) and interactive real-time rendering in urban planning and building design are becoming more and more common. However, the integration of VR in the urban planning process suffers from the complicated interaction handling of the virtual environment. In particular, people unfamiliar to gaming environments and computers are less prone to interact with a VR visualisation using keyboard and mouse as controlling devices. This paper addresses this issue by presenting an implementation of the XBOX 360 Kinect sensor system, which uses the human body to interact with the virtual environment. This type of interaction interface enables a more natural and user-friendly way of interacting with the virtual environment. The validation of the system shows that respondents perceived the interface as non-demanding and easy to use. The implemented interface to switch between different architecture proposals gave a better understanding and spatial reasoning for the respondent. The study also shows that males perceived the system as more demanding than females. The users also associated and compared their body with virtual environment, which could indicate that they used their body during spatial reasoning. This type of spatial reasoning has been agued to enhance the spatial-perception.

The installation was developed to research programming behaviour of augmented space. Pavilion generates acoustic signals in relation to user actions. It does so, according to the rules stored in a program that can be changed through the user interface. The pavilion serves both as a didactic and experimental installation. Therefore, a single low-tec sensor was invented, which operation can be easily understood. Optical mechanism analyzes the image of a shadow to obtain information about interior use. Components of the experiment are used to control process and establish rules. Mode of action is defined by independently designed system procedure.

summary This paper explores the interaction and different types of representations enacted in a BIM-enabled environment that involves interdisciplinary and intradisciplinary collaboration among teams of designers in an architectural praxis context. By means of an ethnographic study conducted over the course of an architectural project from schematic design to construction documents, including five disciplines and twenty subjects, genres of communication interfaces are identified between BIM-authoring tools, sketching interfaces and domain specific analysis tools, and explored within the realm of distributed cognition. Implications in architectural practice and education are then discussed.

summary Important progress towards the development of a system that enables multi-criteria design optimisation has recently been demonstrated during a research collaboration between Autodesk’s DesignScript development team, the University of Bath and the engineering consultancy Buro Happold. This involved integrating aspects of the Robot Structural Analysis application, aspects of the Ecotect building performance application and a specialist form finding solver called SMART Form (developed by Buro Happold) with DesignScript to create a single computation environment. This environment is intended for the generation and evaluation of building designs against both structural and building performance criteria, with the aim of expediently supporting computational optimisation and decision making processes that integrate across multiple design and engineering disciplines. A framework was developed to enable the integration of modeling environments with analysis and process control, based on the authors’ case studies and experience of applied performance driven design in practice. This more generalised approach (implemented in DesignScript) enables different designers and engineers to selectively configure geometry definition, form finding, analysis and simulation tools in an open-ended system without enforcing any predefined workflows or anticipating specific design strategies and allows for a full range of optimisation and decision making processes to be explored. This system has been demonstrated to practitioners during the Design Modeling Symposium, Berlin in 2011 and feedback from this has suggested further development.
