summary Ecological and environmental issues are playing an important and larger role in corporate and manufacturing strategies. For complete creative design process, buildings require both for construction and manufacturing, due to their comparatively long life cycle for maintenance, significant raw material and energy resources. Thinking in terms of product life cycles is one of the challenges facing manufacturers today. “Life Cycle Management” (LCM) considers the product life cycle as a whole and optimizes the interaction of product design, construction, manufacturing and life cycle activities. The goal of this approach is to protect resources and maximize the effectiveness during usage by means of Life Cycle Assessment, Product Data Management, Technical Support and last but not least by Life Cycle Costing. In this paper the environmental consciousness issues pertaining to design, construction, manufacturing and operations management are presented through computer intelligent technologies of this 21century. So, this paper shows the existing approaches of LCM and discusses their visions and further development.

summary In this era, Architectural Design Practice is faced with a paradigm shift in its conventional approaches towards computational methods. In this regard, it is considered a pedagogic challenge to boost up knowledge and skills of architectural students’ towards an advanced approach of architectural design that emphasizes the potentials and complexity of computational environments and parametric tools for design problem solving. For introducing the concept of Parametric Oriented Design Methods to 3rd year level architectural students, an experimental pedagogic course was designed in the scholastic year of 2012-2013 at German Jordanian University GJU (School of Architecture and Built Environment SABE) to approach this concept. In the preparation phase, the experimental course was designed to incorporate structured instructing and training method to be consecutively performed within experimental lab environment to target predetermined learning outcomes and goals. The involved students were intentionally classified into three levels of previous involvement associated with the related software operating skills and computational design exposure. In the implementation phase, the predetermined instructing and training procedures were performed in the controlled environment according to the planned tasks and time intervals. Preceded tactics were prepared to be executed to resolve various anticipated complication. In this phase also, students’ performance and comprehension capacity were observed and recorded. In data analysis phase, the observed results were verified and correlations were recognized. In the final phase, conclusions were established and recommendations for further related pedagogic experiments were introduced.

summary The three-dimensional reconstitution of cities and urban tissues was the subject of several studies and researches. In order to obtain the acquisition of the geometry of architectural or urban sets, some studies are based on Photogrammetric or on computer vision. Others have focused on the development of tools of acquisition from a laser providing a 3D scatter plot. Some of them yet focused towards the development of CAD software. The automatic generation for morphological 3D representation based on the exploitation of the architectural knowledge basis is also an option. This type of work becomes more relevant and legitimate when it concerns old cities in state of ruin or more simply missing whose remains only prints or literary descriptions similar to our case study; the old town of Jijel that many people ignore its existence. The aim of this work is to achieve a 3D reconstitution of buildings of this town based on historical documents, mostly prints, digitized old maps and plans, as well as literary texts (tales of travelers, military records, and history books). The method developed can solve and generate possible urban volumes in the most frequent cases. The 3D model obtained, despite its geometric simplicity, can view the city from different angles and open new opportunities for research in history, architecture and town planning.

summary Milestone figures of architecture all have their different views on what comes first, form or function. They also vary in their definitions of creativity. Apparently, creativity is very strongly related to ideas and how they can be generated. It is also correlated with the process of thinking and developing. Creative products, whether architectural or otherwise, and whether tangible or intangible, are originated from ‘good ideas’ (Elnokaly, Elseragy and Alsaadani, 2008). On one hand, not any idea, or any good idea, can be considered creative but, on the other hand, any creative result can be traced back to a good idea that initiated it in the beginning (Goldschmit and Tatsa, 2005). Creativity in literature, music and other forms of art is immeasurable and unbounded by constraints of physical reality. Musicians, painters and sculptors do not create within tight restrictions. They create what becomes their own mind’s intellectual property, and viewers or listeners are free to interpret these creations from whichever angle they choose. However, this is not the case with architects, whose creations and creative products are always bound with different physical constraints that may be related to the building location, social and cultural values related to the context, environmental performance and energy efficiency, and many more (Elnokaly, Elseragy and Alsaadani, 2008). Remarkably, over the last three decades computers have dominated in almost all areas of design, taking over the burden of repetitive tasks so that the designers and students can focus on the act of creation. Computer aided design has been used for a long time as a tool of drafting, however in this last decade this tool of representation is being replaced by simulation in different areas such as simulation of form, function and environment. Thus, the crafting of objects is moving towards the generation of forms and integrated systems through designer-authored computational processes. The emergence and adoption of computational technologies has significantly changed design and design education beyond the replacement of drawing boards with computers or pens and paper with computer-aided design (CAD) computer-aided engineering (CAE) applications. This paper highlights the influence of the evolving transformation from Computer Aided Design (CAD) to Computational Design (CD) and how this presents a profound shift in creative design thinking and education. Computational-based design and simulation represent new tools that encourage designers and artists to continue progression of novel modes of design thinking and creativity for the 21st century designers. Today computational design calls for new ideas that will transcend conventional boundaries and support creative insights through design and into design. However, it is still believed that in architecture education one should not replace the design process and creative thinking at early stages by software tools that shape both process and final product which may become a limitation for creative designs to adapt to the decisions and metaphors chosen by the simulation tool. This paper explores the development of Computer Aided Design (CAD) to Computational Design (CD) Tools and their impact on contemporary design education and creative design.

summary The intent of this project is to create a catalogue of gestures for remotely controlling dynamic architectural space. This research takes an essential first step towards facilitating the field of architecture in playing a role in developing an agenda for control. The process of the project includes a sequence carried out in four stages: 1) Research of gestural control 2) Creating an initial catalogue of spatial architectural gestures 3) Real-world testing and evaluation and 4) Refining the spatial architectural gestures. In creating a vocabulary for controlling dynamic architectural environments, the research builds upon the current state-of-the-art of gestural control which exists in integrated touch- and gesture-based languages of mobile and media interfaces. The next step was to outline architecturally specific dynamic situational activities as a means to explicitly understand the potential to build gestural control into systems that make up architectural space. A proposed vocabulary was then built upon the cross-referenced validity of existing intuitive gestural languages as applied to architectural situations. The proposed gestural vocabulary was then tested against user-generated gestures in the following areas: frequency of "invention", learnability, memorability, performability, efficiency, and opportunity for error. The means of testing was carried out through a test-cell environment with numerous kinetic architectural elements and a Microsoft Kinect Sensor to track gestures of the test subjects. We conclude that the manipulation of physical building components and physical space itself is more suited to gestural physical manipulation by its users instead of control via device, speech, cognition, or other. In the future it will be possible, if not commonplace to embed architecture with interfaces to allow users to interact with their environments and we believe that gestural language is the most powerful means control through enabling real physical interactions.

summary 4D CAD is more and more used in construction education curricula. The main interest of this technology is its ability to simulate real sequencing of construction tasks in order to confront the student with real-life construction management issues. This article presents a course for architects and construction engineers. It describes the teaching of the structural principles of high-rise buildings, using 4D simulations as a support to the analysis of the characteristics of existing projects. The pedagogical interest of 4D CAD is described in the article through assessments of students and the teaching team. Particular feedback is given about modeling and visualization guidelines for the purpose of the pedagogical use of 4D CAD.

summary This research paper concentrates on a conceptual framework for the creation of high-level procedural city models. A workflow is presented, which enables users to create city models in an intuitive way by using design-code-driven building typologies. This drastically advances traditional procedural city modelling where usually low-level implementations of city model components take place. New planning methods and instruments have to be developed for the growing demand of the rapid environmental, social and economic changes in cities and agglomerations. The presented method allows for quick visualization and iteration by using urban planning typologies.

summary The premise of this paper addresses the limited shared vocabulary of landscape architecture and architectural design - evident in the application of terms such as ‘spatial design’ and ‘spatial planning’. In their current usage, such terms emphasize the visible, terrestrial, pedestrian perspective level, often to the absolute exclusion of a spatial, ie. volumetric, comprehension of the environment. This deficit is acutely evident in the education of Landscape Architecture and Architecture, and discussion of their shared ground. The dominant document to map such analysis and design is the plan, or 3d-dimensional representations of the same, restricted to an extrusion or height map. GIS techniques in spatial design tend to be weighted towards visual, surface based data (slope analysis, exposure, viewshed etc.). Our goal within this domain lies in transforming aspects of the intangible - the characteristics of open space itself - into a form that is legible, quantifiable, and malleable.

summary This paper presents a developed web-based information system using the data collected during underwater surveys conducted on the coastal region of Turkey. Divers from a variety of professional backgrounds collected data by keeping the archaeological artifacts in their original context. By collecting visual, geographical and descriptive data using structured datasheets, the artifacts are transferred into the digital domain. Through the analysis of these methods, an information system is developed aiming for the contribution of all interested parties in a collaborative manner. Combined with Google Maps, the database illustrates the initial technological steps towards the development of a virtual museum.

summary The aim of this academic research was to analyze one of the fi rst architectures designed and built with the fi nality to present electronic potentialities to people. The design was developed by Le Corbusier and his studio for the International Expo held in Brussels in 1958, for the Philips fi rm, and it was destroyed some months later, after the event. The research investigated the complex geometry of the structure in order to understand the strict relation between the physical perception of the space and the electronic aspects of them, using advanced technology, but, above all, if it is true that the best way to understand the physicality of a destroyed architecture could be a virtual visit using electronic devices and digital procedures.

summary Taking things apart is easy. How something works, or even what it is, is irrelevant to its dismantling. If assembly can be perceived as a rational act, then disassembly is certainly its counterpart: an intuitive, foolproof, and mindless errand of the seemingly curious subject. It is in this unflattering description, however, that disassembly warrants an analysis of its smart potential Smart Disassemblies locates the exploded view drawing, a representation that conveys the instructions for assembly, within its architectural legacy, from its origins in the Renaissance to its more contemporary appropriation by Thom Mayne and Daniel Libeskind. The categorical rules, and the part-to-whole relationships they imply, gleaned from these precedents are then subverted toward the end of disassembling an object. The proposed rule sets (Point of Explosion, Point of View, and Explosion Sequence) and their variants are tested through their application to a complex assembly of objects, a jazz quintet.

summary Creating virtual city models at different scales, emphases and overall orientations is a topic that has attracted great interest in architectural and urban planning context over at least the last two decades. However the complexity of the city as a historical formation demands new methods of representation embracing interactive technologies. The work discussed in this paper is part of a large multidisciplinary project for the development of the Volos city museum. Enhancing the interaction between the public and the museum exhibits is essential. The paper focuses on the definition, complexity and orientation of the data structures and the integration of 3D contemporary and historic data that is the backbone for the digital representations and the interactive applications developed for the museum.

title Sense of Place in Virtual Heritage Environment: A Review

summary The use of computer technology is becoming a necessity to many organizations particularly as a means of representation and visualization. In the context of culture and heritage it is often developed in the form of virtual heritage. This is due to the fact that some of these intangible values are faded or even lost in museums they are placed, or buried in its physical remains and ruins. The concept of portraying the richness of sense of place via the use of virtual reality (VR) technology is seen to be of great potential to give value to the heritage sites. Thus, VR allows a unique representation of the intangible heritage elements while evoking the user’s senses, emotions, memories, meanings and interpretations, though these are arguably complex to accomplish. This paper reviews literatures on factors that influence the character of place and sense of place, and the use of VR technology and virtual world design to suggest presence for virtual heritage development.

summary Our work is to enable partners of a construction project (building owner, architect, engineer, etc.) to share all the technical data produced and manipulated during the building process, by setting up interfaces for an accessible information system via the internet. Our system would be able to deliver an answer to a user to a particular question asked. The system links databases and allows building partners to access and to manipulate specific information. This paper covers the information structure model based on building construction knowledge and the access to user-relevant information. First, the paper aims to establish the state of the art of the information systems available today in the building construction field. Second, we present the contribution of our research to the description of the building elements (foundations, ramps, stairs, etc.), where information is share by partners who are distant from one another and focused on fields of expertise that are distinct but concurrent. Our system links distributed databases and provides an updated building representation that is being enriched and refined all along the building life cycle. It consists of 3D representations of the building as well as data that are associated with each graphical entity (walls, slabs, beams, etc.).

summary As media-orientation and access to media becomes increasingly widespread in society, so too is the availability of architectural designs on the internet. In most cases these are published in the form of raster images of plans, elevations and perspective drawings together with written descriptions on architecture databases and platforms such as archINFORM or nextroom, as well as on the homepages of the respective architecture offi ces. Knowledge is generally regarded as useful information. However, the literature does not elaborate clear differentiations between what is knowledge, and what is information and data. In our view it is the preparation of information in data structures that makes it useful as knowledge. Knowledge management systems are therefore intelligent information systems in which knowledge is presented and made useful through representation and modelling methods (Abeckerand Decker, 1999).

summary Ceramic building material is a useful passive modulator of the environment. The subject area is based on traditional cultural and material knowledge of clay properties: from amphora to rammed earth building; and ranges to present uses: from desiccants and space shuttle tile patterns to bio-ceramics. The primary consideration is to control material density and porosity in a tile component, in response to specific environmental conditions. This depends on a number of key physical principles: the ability of the material to absorb thermal energy, the ability to absorb and then ‘wick’ moisture within the pore structure, and the decrement factor or ‘time lag’ of the effect. The interplay between these properties point to the importance of directionality in the porous microstructure, at the boundary layer. Material characteristics have been investigated in the laboratory at a micron scale and in the ceramics workshop at full scale, with some interplay between the two. Recent work done on monitoring has led to the development of software tools that allow feedback (approaching real time)- a visual representation of the dynamic thermal and hygrometric properties involved.

summary This paper aims to describe part of a study about the visualization of architectural designs through digital interactive environments generated with gaming technology. Thus, this text reports the analyses concerning the geometrical modeling procedures of an architectural environment specifically for this usage. The experiment consisted in using a modeling software to create one object using several different techniques, to analyze the number of polygons, the behavior of the surface normals, the stability of the geometries and collision behavior for each one of the objects, in the digital environment.

summary Previous research (Bourdakis et al, 2012; Papasarantou et al, 2013) dealt with the problem of creating information visualisation systems capable of combining historical data of MUCIV's database and developing strategies that embed the non-spatial data in spatial models. The database was primarily designed as an experimental flexible spatio-temporal configuration of dynamic visual structures generating a variety of narrations through interaction.The attempt of producing a legible configuration driven by a number of criteria, led to the proposition of two different arrangements, namely the linear and radial array. The aim of this paper is to present the next step on the visualization after redefining both the way that thematic axes and data are visualized and arranged/scattered. Alternate configurations are investigated, based also on theoretical analysis on the conceptualization and perception of information visualization systems (Card et al 1999, Ware, 2004).

summary The behavior of a human being in a building, its activities, its interactions with it and with other people are certainly a highly complex phenomenon extremely hard to predict and evaluate. At the same time, the response of a built environment to future users’ needs is one of the key factors of its performance. The Agent-based Modeling paradigm is considered potentially the best way to represent human behavior but, in the building design field, its experiences are limited to representation of partial aspects of human behavior in discrete events. Currently, a more "extended" representation of human behavior able to offer an overview of the human activities related to the building ‘functioning’, is missing,. This lack is due to the complexity of interaction among users and built environment, and to the extensive knowledge, provided by different disciplines, needed to reliably represent it. The proposed research focuses on the construction of a general representation template of user-actor, easy to implement and flexible enough to structure the large amount of data affecting human behavior. The development of the ontology-based template shown in this paper can lead to a user-agent’s entity whose parameters and behavioral rules can encode and represent several ‘aspects’ of real users and their interactions with the other entities (building components, furniture, other people) in a built environment.
