title Simulation Heuristics for Urban Design

summary Designing simulations for urban design not only requires explicit performance criteria of planning standards but a synthesis of implicit design objectives, that we will call ‘purpose rules’, with computational approaches. The former would at most lead to automation of the existing planning processes for speed and evaluation, the latter to an understanding of perceived urban qualities and their effect on the planning of cities. In order to transform purpose rules into encoded principles we argue that the focus should not be on defining parametric constraints and quantities, but on aligning the perceptual properties of the simulations with the strategies of the stakeholders (planner/ urban designer/ architect/ developer/ community). Using projects from the Computational Design and Research group at Aedas [CDR] as examples, this chapter will discuss how an open framework of lightweight applications with simple functionality can be integrated into the design and planning process by using computational simulations as urban design heuristics.

title Availability of a distributed and synchronised type meeting by using cloud computing type VR for spatial design study

summary The mobility of people's activities, and cloud computing technologies are becoming advanced in the modern age of information and globalisation. This study describes the availability of discussing spatial design while sharing a 3-dimensional virtual space with stakeholders in a distributed and synchronised environment. First of all, a townscape design support system based on a cloud computing type VR system is constructed. Next, an experiment of a distributed and synchronised discussion of townscape design is executed with subjects who are specialists in the townscape design field. After the experiment, both qualitative mental evaluation and quantitative evaluation were carried out. The conclusions are as follows: 1. Users who use VR frequently and who use videoconferencing consider that the difference with face-to-face discussion is small. 2. A Moiré pattern may occur in a gradation picture. 3. The availability of distributed and synchronised discussions with cloud computing type VR is high.

summary The article presents a graph-based spatial analysis toolset (“decoding spaces”components) which we have recently developed as an extension of the visual scripting language Grasshopper3D for Rhino. These tools directly integrate spatial analysis methods into CAD design software which can have a signifi cant effect on current design workfl ows. However,grasshopper doesn’t only enable the results of analyses to be used in the standard Rhino modelling environment. It also makes it possible to integrate spatial analysis into a parametric design approach as discussed in this paper. The functionality of this toolset is demonstrated using a simple urban design scenario where we introduce the idea of parametric patterns based on graph-measures.

summary This paper is an account of the façade rationalisation strategy developed at Gehry Technologies for mitigating the tradeoffs between project constructability and the aesthetic implications of arranging flat panels over a complex surface. The strategy outlined was developed as the result of the digital building delivery of the Museo Soumaya façade in Mexico City designed by Fernando Romero LAR. This report documents the development process of a method for obtaining relevant construction information flows enabling the assembly of the façade system by a third-party sub-contractor in support of the façade system coordination. This report concludes on a method using bespoke software for extending the parametric modelling system Digital Project™ in the design support role of obtaining an aesthetically pleasing arrangement of flat hexagonal panels over a freeform surface.

summary This research presents the development of a sensor oriented mobile AR system which realises geometric consistency using GPS, a gyroscope and a video camera which are mounted in a smartphone for urban landscape assessment. A low cost AR system with high flexibility is realised. Consistency of the viewing angle of a video camera and a CG virtual camera, and geometric consistency between a video image and 3DCG are verified. In conclusion, the proposed system was evaluated as feasible and effective.

summary Point cloud processing has come a long way in the past years. Advances in computer vision (CV) and machine learning (ML) have enabled its automated recognition and processing. However, few of those developments have made it through to the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry. Here, optimizing those workflows can reduce time spent on early-phase projects, which otherwise could be spent on developing innovative design solutions. Simplifying the processing of building point cloud scans makes it more accessible and therefore, usable for design, planning and decision-making. Furthermore, automated processing can also ensure that point clouds are processed consistently and accurately, reducing the potential for human error. This work is part of a larger effort to optimize early-phase design processes to promote the reuse of vacant buildings. It focuses on technical solutions to automate the reconstruction of point clouds into a digital twin as a simplified solid 3D element model. In this paper, various ML approaches, among others KPConv Thomas et al. (2019), ShapeConv Cao et al. (2021) and Mask-RCNN He et al. (2017), are compared in their ability to apply semantic as well as instance segmentation to point clouds. Further it relies on the S3DIS Armeni et al. (2017), NYU v2 Silberman et al. (2012) and Matterport Ramakrishnan et al. (2021) data sets for training. Here, the authors aim to establish a workflow that reduces the effort for users to process their point clouds and obtain object-based models. The findings of this research show that although pure point cloud-based ML models enable a greater degree of flexibility, they incur a high computational cost. We found, that using RGB-D images for classifications and segmentation simplifies the complexity of the ML model but leads to additional requirements for the data set. These can be mitigated in the initial process of capturing the building or by extracting the depth data from the point cloud.

title A responsive morphing media skin

summary Existing media façades do not function as fenestration devices. They have been used mainly for visual communication and aesthetic purposes. This paper introduces a responsive morphing skin that can act as an active fenestration device as well as a media skin. We investigate new possibilities of using form-changing materials in designing responsive morphing skins that respond to environmental conditions and act as a communicative display. The design experiment that embodied this investigation, namely Blind, serves as a new layer of analogue media brise-soleil for existing space. It communicates the relationships between interior and exterior spaces visually and projects mutable imageries to the surrounding environment through sunlight. The design process of Blind simulates the responsive behaviour of the intended architectural skin by integrating physical computing and parametric design tools. This process includes the integration of soft apertures and architectural morphing skin to introduce a novel design method that enables an architectural skin to be a means of communication and fenestration. It responds to changing stimuli and intends to improve the spatial quality of existing environments through two types of transformations: morphological and patterned.

summary This paper will demonstrate two effective facade rationalisation patterns developed at Gehry Technologies for mitigating the tradeoffs between project constructability constraints vs. project aesthetic constraints. The two Case-Studies will present, fi rstly a method for dealing with large amounts of component instantiations and second with the economical delivery of complex project geometry through panelling. Both projects use design technology as a strategy for the integration of specialized knowledge and trades, through an effective use of information technology. The Case Studies will present the development of the Gridshell Digital Mock-Up of the Yas Island Marina Hotel in Abu Dhabi designed by Asymptote Architects and secondly the Museo Soumaya facade system in Mexico City designed by Fernando Romero LAR. This document will report the development process for obtaining relevant construction information, essential for the assembly of the facade systems by a third-party sub-contractor in support of the facade system coordination. The report concludes on the implementations of bespoke tools in support of the coordination and geometry description tasks. summary Isovists and isovist fi elds can be used to numerically capture the visual properties of spatial confi gurations (e.g. fl oor plans or urban layouts). To a certain degree these properties allow one to make statements about how spaces affect people. The question that serves as the starting point of this study is to examine whether spatial confi gurations ca n generated on the basis of these properties. This question is explored using an experimental approach for the computer-based generation of two-dimensional urban layouts. The spatial arrangements of two-dimensional elements (building-footprints) within a given boundary is optimised in terms of the desired isovist fi eld properties by means of an evolutionary strategy. The paper presents the results of this optimisation and discusses the advantages of this method compared with pattern books as commonly used in architecture.

summary This article refl ects on the digital reconstruction of the Vinohrady Synagogue in Prague, which was demolished in 1951. Based on an international collaboration through the Erasmus program, expertise derived from other Viennese synagogue reconstructions at TU Vienna was combined with a resource organization methodology developed at KU Leuven. The reconstruction process is carried out using BIM software, which poses some particular attention on the software methodology and model structure, but at the same time illustrates the added value of a BIM approach, when comparing with more traditional CAD modelling systematics. Of particular interest is the approach for modelling complex geometry, integrating with more traditional 2D documents and for visualizing reconstruction assumptions within the 3D model representation.

summary Agent-oriented modelling is one of the simulation methods for emergent behavior of a complex system that could be considered for application of urban city structures. Using advanced script techniques, the behavior and evolution of structures in the bottom-up strategies for the development of environment could be simulated in architecture and urbanism as well. The paper presents a research subproject in the area of verifi cation of the processes of spatial and social interaction of the agents according to the logic of defined intrinsic rules of Swarm behavior in the simulation model of the selected area. The research builds mainly upon two selected requirements of the bottom-up strategy: the approach distances to places of interest and mutual standoff distances between urban elements.

summary This paper discusses the potential of emerging digital representations of built environments coupled with agent-based modelling (ABM). A new set of urban transportation data is provided as an input which is the electric vehicles (EVs) population of one of the UK metropolitan areas. The study is a part of a PhD research that focuses on investigating computer-aided software to develop a virtual route for electric mobility in the North Sea Region. An overview of agent-based simulation platforms is discussed. Electric mobility system has particular paradigms that differ from conventional urban transport systems; a comparison is presented followed by the recommended approach of integrating the two techniques (visualization and simulation). Finally, the architecture of agents’ algorithm within the EVs network is presented through a case study of virtual Newcastle-Gateshead model.

summary In the fabrication of organic free-form shapes in architecture one is constantly faced with specifi c planning and design challenges. This paper examines these problems as well as possible solutions for the design of a completed and built prototype using the example of an organically shaped pavilion made of glass fi bre reinforced plastic modules. The paper describes which adjustments to the original design were required to take the step from “digital physicality” to “physical digitality” to realize a constructive and economically successful implementation. The solutions discussed combine modern digital software methods such as parametric design with innovative 3D modelling principles.

This study also aims to observe the value of potential feedback to the design process from different types of digitally fabricated architectural models. This experimental research systematically explores digital fabrication as a computer-aided modelling tool, using two international architectural competition projects as case studies: the design of a skyscraper and relocatable schools. Developed by authors especially for this research paper, each case study acts as a test bed to compare and evaluate digital production techniques adopted for physical modelling in architecture. Designs go through a process of refinement using CNC fabrication as an integral part of the design process. Each step in the process is closely evaluated as to its effectiveness according to a matrix of feedback criteria.

summary The challenge of developing adaptive, responsive low-energy architecture requires new knowledge about the complex and dynamic interaction between envelope architecture and optimisation between competing environmental performance metrics. Advances in modelling the geometry of building envelopes and control technologies for adaptive buildings now permit the sophisticated evaluation of alternative envelope configurations for a set of performance criteria. This paper reports on a study of the parametric control of a building envelope based on moveable façade components, acting as a shading device to reduce thermal gain within the building. This is investigated using a novel pentagonal tiling strategy considering the component design, tessellation and control methods.

summary Schizoanalytical digital modelling serves description of processes occurring in urban settings. Schizoanalysis serves to ‘meta-model’ the everyday world around us, where ‘meta’ means inclusion of different perspectives. The paper formulates few hyphotheses concerning the relation between the crowd of people representing a specifi c culture and the urban settings, which constitute their habitus. The methodology of analysis of urban structure is proposed, which is based on the urban closures cross-sections analysis with the use of Line of Site method (LOs), as complimentary to the Space Syntax methodology of pedestrian simulation and analysis of fi eld of sight, based on isovists. The paper presents the results of the descriptive analysis of the former Jewish district in Lodz, research on which is to be developed with the methodology proposed.

summary This paper presents an inverse pedestrian urban design method and an initial set of parametric tools for conceptual design support at the pedestrian urban scale. Inverse pedestrian urban design concerns the derivation of urban design parameters from a local context in order to produce better informed and situated designs. The tools concern the rationalization of street network and building form. Some of the parameters that are used within the tools are view angles (visibility analysis) and distances between target points (accessibility analysis). summary This research paper concentrates on a conceptual framework for the creation of high-level procedural city models. A workflow is presented, which enables users to create city models in an intuitive way by using design-code-driven building typologies. This drastically advances traditional procedural city modelling where usually low-level implementations of city model components take place. New planning methods and instruments have to be developed for the growing demand of the rapid environmental, social and economic changes in cities and agglomerations. The presented method allows for quick visualization and iteration by using urban planning typologies.

summary This paper addresses the design and fabrication of non-uniform structural shell systems. Structural shells, particularly gridshells, have a long history but due to their complexity and the accompanying high cost of construction, their application has been limited. The research proposes a method for integrating the design and fabrication processes such that complex double curved reticulated frames can be constructed efficiently, from prefabricated components, requiring significantly less formwork than is typical. A significant aspect of the method has been the development of software tools that allow for both algorithmic form-finding and the direct control of robotic fabrication equipment from within the same modelling package. A recent case-study is examined where the methodology has been applied to construct a reticulated shell structure in the form of a partial vault. Components were prefabricated using 6-axis robotic fabrication equipment. Individual parts are designed such that the assembly of components guides the form of the vault, requiring no centring to create the desired shape. Algorithmically generated machine instructions controlled a sequence of three tool changes for each part, using a single modular fixture, greatly increasing accuracy. The complete integration of computational design techniques and fabrication methodologies now enables the economical deployment of non-uniform structurally optimised reticulated frames.
