title Digital manga virtual environment: Bi-tonal visualisation for texture-mapped virtual environments
source Proceedings of the 17th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia / Chennai 25-28 April 2012, pp. 619–628

summary Bi-tonal and non-photorealistic architectural depictions can be employed to develop a narrative that engages the reader with not only the visual aspects, but also other sensorial feelings. Architecture is subsequently not only represented through its factual dimensions of length, width and height, but is extended to intangible sensorial realms. This paper presents a modified rendering appearance of the graphical depiction of a Virtual Environments (VE) -software to communicate design akin to Japanese cartoon (manga) depictions whereby we expand the two-dimensional manga-images into a three-dimensional VE. The modified visualization can be used for storytelling and developing a narrative that professionals and laypersons alike easily can access, understand and interact. The bi-tonal depictions offer users to experience both, visual richness of the original model, as well as enhanced design communications.

title The Forbidden Symmetries

summary The emergence of quasi-periodic tiling theories in mathematics and material science is revealing a new class of symmetry, which had never been accessible before. Because of their astounding visual and structural properties, quasi-periodic symmetries can be ideally suited for many applications in art and architecture; providing a rich source of ideas for articulating form, pattern, surface and structure. However, since their discovery, the unique long-range order of quasi-periodic symmetries, is still posing a perplexing puzzle. As rule-based systems, the ability to algorithmically generate these complicated symmetries can be instrumental in understanding and manipulating their geometry. Recently, the discovery of quasi-periodic patterns in ancient Islamic architecture is providing a unique example of how ancient mathematics can inform our understanding of some basic theories in modern science. The recent investigation into these complex and chaotic formations is providing evidence to show that ancient designers, by using the most primitive tools (a compass and a straightedge) were able to resolve the complicated long-range principles of ten-fold quasi-periodic formations. Derived from these ancient principles, this paper presents a computational model for describing the long-range order of octagon-based quasi-periodic formations. The objective of the study is to design an algorithm for constructing large patches of octagon-based quasi-crystalline formations. The proposed algorithm is proven to be successful in producing an infinite and defect-free covering of the two-dimensional plane.

summary Dancing on the Desktop is a gesture-based modeling system. In this prototype, two interactive display screens are projected on the top of a desk and the wall behind it to show the plan and perspective views of an architectural model, respectively. A depth camera detects gestural interactions between these two displays to create an immersive gestural interaction space to manipulate the model. Additionally, visual images and text are projected on the user’s hands to provide different types of feedback about gestural interactions. We argue that Dancing on the Desktop helps users develop an embodied understanding of the spatial and volumetric properties of virtual objects. In this paper, we will review related gestural prototypes and examine their shortcomings. Then, we will introduce distributed cognition and describe how it helped our system address the shortcomings of typical gestural prototypes. Next, we will describe the implementation details and explain each type of gestural interaction in detail. Finally, we will discuss our preliminary tests and conclusions.

summary Transforming the work in a dynamic system, Form (in) formation is a poetic construction that addresses different creative processes in order and in evidence of the collaborative power of a digital image reproduction to the same extent that misaligns copyright borders of his own artistic production. Therefore, this article shows some ways that made possible interventions that prioritize distinct visual and exchange files via internet during this participatory process. Structured in two parts, the first dealing with participatory demonstrations in contemporary artistic productions. The second points to the aspect of the Form (in) formation project that involves the collaboration of invited people as a main constituent between the artistic practices involved.

title Agent Provocateur - BIM In The Academic Design Studio
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 10 - no. 1, 53-66
summary Building Information Modeling challenges academia to question the fundamental roles of abstraction and simulation in design education. Architectural education and practice assume a traditional set of visual conventions at varied scales and levels of detail, that when taken in concert signifies a whole, complete idea of a building, a correspondence between design intent and interpretation, between the representation of ideas and the design of buildings. BIM viewed as provocateur to these assumptions provides potential critical analysis of how architectural design is taught. Academia must seek out new design methodologies for exploring architecture that reflect the representational shift of BIM by developing teaching methods that reprioritize ways of seeing, thinking and making. This paper describes a studio model that seeks out new active methods for exploring architecture that embrace this shift by developing processes that provoke novel ways to reconcile the traditions of abstraction and the opportunities of synthetic simulation.

title Photorealistic Computer Generated Representations as a Means of Visual Communication of Architectural Schemes in the Contemporary Culture
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 10 - no. 2, 185-204
summary This paper explores the nature and effects of photorealistic computer generated architectural representations on the perception and understanding of design schemes. The aim is to obtain an insight into potentials and limitations that arise from this form of communication. Findings suggest that by conveying a sense of lifelike presence, these representations enhance the understanding of design. They are also perceived as more realistic, accurate and comprehensible and as such, more effective means of communicating design than hand drawings. However, not all photorealistic styles are perceived as neither lifelike nor credible. Instead, it was evident that these representations enter perceptions through a complex interaction between their attribute and observers familiarity with form and visual literacy. Most importantly, the understanding of design through photorealistic representations is deeply conditioned by the prevailing cultural style of visual representation and knowledge of the preferences of specific professions.

source SIGraDi 2012 [Proceedings of the 16th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Brasil - Fortaleza 13-16 November 2012, pp. 263-267
summary Pedagogical tradition is to focus its curriculums in studies that encourage the students in mental mechanisms which are favorable to the acquisition of a thought supported in the visual language and in the workshop. Current information technologies have produced a displacement in the ways the young people know, operate and relate to the world. A definitively cognitive shift has been provoked from the traditional written semantic decoding to visual semantic decoding, different operational skills have acquired, and a shift of intersubjetive communications from the personal experiential space to the virtual space.

summary The article presents a graph-based spatial analysis toolset (“decoding spaces”components) which we have recently developed as an extension of the visual scripting language Grasshopper3D for Rhino. These tools directly integrate spatial analysis methods into CAD design software which can have a signifi cant effect on current design workfl ows. However, grasshopper doesn’t only enable the results of analyses to be used in the standard Rhino modelling environment. It also makes it possible to integrate spatial analysis into a parametric design approach as discussed in this paper. The functionality of this toolset is demonstrated using a simple urban design scenario where we introduce the idea of parametric patterns based on graph-measures.

summary This paper describes the development of a design and prototype production system for novel structural use of networked small components of wood deploying elastic and plastic bending. The design process engaged with a significant number of different overlapping and interrelated design criteria and parameters, a high level of complexity, custom component geometry and the development of digital tools and procedures for real time feedback and productivity. The aims were to maximize learning in the second order cybernetic sense through empirical experience from analogue modeling, measurement and digital visual feedback and to capture new knowledge specifically regarding intrinsic material behavior applied and tested in a heterogeneous networked context. The outcome was a prototype system of design ideation, conceptualization, development and production that integrated real time material performance simulation and feedback. The outcome was amplified through carrying out the research over a series of workshops with distinct foci and participation. Two full scale demonstrators have so far been constructed and exhibited as outputs of the process.

summary The research presented further is part of the Digital Alberti research project, which aims to assess the infl uence of Leon Batista Alberti’s theory on Portuguese architecture, through the use of digital technologies. One of the project tasks implied computational and physical modelling of Alberti’s column system. Development of the computational model implied decoding Alberti’s treatise on architecture De re aedifi catoria into a consistent set of parameters and relationships, and then implementing these into generative parametric computer programs through visual programming language Grasshopper. This computational model is able to automatically generate physical models of classical columns according to Alberti’s canons. These digital models were then materialized through production of physical models, through rapid prototyping and digital fabrication technologies. Special attention is given to the CNC stone milling of a Corinthian capital.

title CAD Scripting and Visual Programming Languages for Implementing Computational Design Concepts: A Comparison from a Pedagogical Point of View
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 10 - no. 1, 121-138
summary This paper compares the use of scripting languages and visual programming languages for teaching computational design concepts to novice and advanced architecture students. Both systems are described and discussed in terms of the representation methods they use. With novice students better results were obtained with the visual programming language. However, the generative strategies used were restricted to parametric variation and the use of randomness. Scripting, on the other hand, was used by advanced students to implement rule-based generative systems. It is possible to conclude that visual languages can be very useful for making architecture students understand general programming concepts, but scripting languages are fundamental for implementing generative design systems. The paper also discusses the importance of the ability to shift between different representation methods, from more concrete to more abstract, as part of the architectural education.

summary This paper analyses a hybrid design approach; how physical and digital processes can inform each other in a multivalent design cycle. It describes the design of origami-inspired window shades, part of the Shaping Light project that explores how adjustable surface structures can modulate light levels and heat gain in response to the changing seasons. The screen uses sloped surfaces to diffuse light and create apertures that close when the screen is stretched and open when the screen is folded. The project complements digital methods for pattern proportioning and kinetic simulation with manual manipulation to generate 3D folding motifs and refi ne assemblies. Physical prototypes can shape digital refi nement by revealing visual and structural characteristics of materials, along with joint and production considerations. Physical models for simulating sunny and cloudy daylighting conditions provide a direct connection between spatial confi guration and visual effects. The paper concludes with guidelines for material-based digital-analog creation.

summary The research topic of this paper exemplifies design optimization techniques of a hotel/office tower in Central China (Nanjing city), which faces subtropical humid climate throughout the year. The main intent of the project is to fi nd optimized design solution with the aid of parametric design tools and Visual Basic Scripting techniques (in Rhino Script & Grasshopper) combined with intuitive design process. In any urban context, we firmly believe that architectural design is a responsive phenomenon, which faces diverse interaction with the user & the local climate. The building design of the proposed tower acknowledges these responsive factors of the design with the environment along with building users or residents. Consequently, we strive to develop a sustainable design solution, which is ecologically efficient and psychologically conducive to the wellbeing of the user. We developed our intuitive design product with complex computational design toolsets to leverage design and energy efficiency. In this procedure, we draw major design concepts and geometrical typologies from natural systems in the form of bio mimicry or biologically inspired design process. Overall, this research paper outlines the significance and relevant benefi ts of the combination of intuitive design (from experience, expertise and architects skills) with parametric scripting tools.

title Mapping the Experience of Space
source SIGraDi 2012 [Proceedings of the 16th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Brasil - Fortaleza 13-16 November 2012, pp. 550-553
summary This paper aims to contribute to the discussion and our understanding of time-based mapping of visual information. Our approach is to enhance the traditional contextual static analysis through the acknowledgement of the body and the senses as key indicators of perceptual spatial experience. The time-based mapping paradigms have produced different ways of designing space by leveraging perceptual and other sensorial understanding, leading to the formation of variables (or parameters) which at the same time turn themselves as catalysts for other variables. The potential for a constantly evolving reinterpretation of the perceptual experience and for associated paradigm to shift suggest a multiplicity of design possibilities for urban areas that also need to adapt to the new requirements of contemporary living. In essence, the paper will bring to light the deployment of tools (digital and analogue) to turn static invisible data to dynamic visible data. In other words, we want to explore how the data can be treated as a generative system, enabling students and tutors alike to experience space which accounts for sensory performances and behaviours within the space.

summary The present paper tries to explore the potential of visual-heavy tools in the creation of virtual reality worlds, with an emphasis on tools borrowed from 3d electronic games. Compared to earlier approaches in virtual reality creation the paper focuses on game design tools and provides a basic framework for interaction in virtual reality, based on classic rather than digital representations, which is then expanded using digital representations. In the second part of the paper a game creation tool is assessed based on its potential not only of usability but also on guiding the designer in specific paths to designing virtual worlds. The assessment is based on a case study of interaction design.

summary Histories are underdeveloped and underused features in parametric CAD (PCAD) systems. Designers employ backtracking and deferral strategies that both use and augment history. Using backtracking and deferral as a framework we present two classes of design process graph diagramming techniques for augmented history in PCAD. We compare the second version of these design process graphs across several designers who completed multiple tasks using two parametric systems (SolidWorks and GenerativeComponents). The two systems show similar types of action, with markedly more and deeper backtracking in GenerativeComponents. We present a third diagramming system as a design for a proof of concept prototype. This prototype aims to expand the capabilities of design histories beyond access to single prior states to visualize and enable direct interaction based on backtracking and deferral.
