title Agent Provocateur - BIM In The Academic Design Studio

summary Building Information Modeling challenges academia to question the fundamental roles of abstraction and simulation in design education. Architectural education and practice assume a traditional set of visual conventions at varied scales and levels of detail, that when taken in concert signifies a whole, complete idea of a building, a correspondence between design intent and interpretation, between the representation of ideas and the design of buildings. BIM viewed as provocateur to these assumptions provides potential critical analysis of how architectural design is taught. Academia must seek out new design methodologies for exploring architecture that reflect the representational shift of BIM by developing teaching methods that reprioritize ways of seeing, thinking and making. This paper describes a studio model that seeks out new active methods for exploring architecture that embrace this shift by developing processes that provoke novel ways to reconcile the traditions of abstraction and the opportunities of synthetic simulation.

summary Why use the terms synthetic and ecology in the context of a conference dedicated to the field of digital architecture, computation and fabrication? How do we begin to unpack the synthetic union of diverse elements, processes, collaborators, and code underlying any single contemporary design or research project? What could our field gain by interrogating these diverse ecologies? What are the relationships and interactions between our design processes, including our various tools and techniques, and the multiple environments with which we routinely work, collaborate and make? It is these questions and more that we hope to address at this year’s “Synthetic Digital Ecologies” conference. A quick scan of the papers and projects that will be presented at ACADIA reveals an extraordinary ecology of experimental research that emerged by working between messy labs, studios, workshops, hacker spaces and the like. In many ways today’s so-called “digital architects” do not feel compelled to distinguish between what is digitally designed and what is not. They are leading the way through a promiscuous and synthetic mixing of skill sets, of pens and paper, hardware and software, electronics and g-code. In a single research project these designers might collaborate with a computer scientist, a robotics expert and a glass blower, and in many cases they might even attempt to do all of these things themselves. It was with this in mind that we put forth an international call inviting, “… architects, fabricators, engineers, media artists, technologists, software developers, hackers and others in related fields of inquiry …” to submit papers and projects for this year’s conference. This year the proceedings have been organized into twelve synthetic categories based around the potential for diverse research topics to inform new and unexpected conversations. Instead of organizing peer-reviewed papers and projects through their formal characteristics, we were interested in forming new synthetic categories by curating unexpected juxtapositions. This ecology of ideas and research was meant to provoke and inspire new ways of thinking, making, building and collaborating.

summary As we stand with our feet on earth’s outermost surface we build an architecture today that is much like it was several thousand years earlier, in an attempt to extend that outer shell with one of our own making. Artificial masses are built from a refinement of this existing geologic layer into materials of stone, steel, concrete, and glass that assemble to produce new pockets of space through the buildings they create. However, the sixth century BC writer Thales of Miletus put a different perspective on this: he insisted that we live, in reality, not on the summit of a solid earth but at the bottom of an ocean of air (Holmyard 1931). And so, as architecture continues to build up the outermost layer of earth’s surface through a mimicking, embellishing, and enhancing of the materials which it comes from, it raises the question of why we have not brought a similar relationship to the materialities at the bottom of this “ocean” of air to create the spaces we call architecture. If you were looking to level a complaint with the architectural profession, stating that it has not been ambitious enough in scope would not be one. Architects have never shied away from the opportunity to design everything from the building’s shell to the teaspoon used to stir your sugar in its matching cup. But it would seem that the profession has developed a rather large blind spot in terms of what it sees as a malleable material with which to engage. Architects have made assumptions as to what is beyond our scope of action, refraining from engaging a range of material variables due to a belief that the task would be too great or simply beyond our physical control. So even though we are enveloped by them continuously, both on the exterior as well as the interior of our buildings, it must be assumed that the particles, waves, and frequencies of energy that move around us are thought by architects to be too faint and shaky to unload upon them any heavy obligations, that they are too unwieldy for us to control to create the physical boundaries of separation, security, and movement required of architecture. This has resulted in a cultivated set of blinders that essentially defines architecture as a set of mediation devices (surfaces, walls, and inert masses) for tempering the environmental context it is situated in from the individuals and activities within. The spaces we inhabit are defined by their ability to decide what gets in and what stays out (sunlight, precipitation, winds). We place our organizational demands and aesthetic opinions on the surfaces that mediate these variables rather than seeing them as available for manipulation as a building material on their own. The intention here is to recalibrate the materialities that make up that environmental context to build architecture. The starting point is a rather naive question: can we design the energy systems that course in and around us daily as an architectural material so as to take on the needs of activities, securities, and lifestyles associated with architecture? Can the variables that we would normally mediate against instead be heightened and amplified so as to become the architecture itself? That which many would incorrectly dismiss as simply “air” today—thought to be homogeneous, scale-less, and vacant due in part to the limits of our human sensory system to perceive more fully otherwise—might tomorrow be further articulated, populated, and layered so as to become a materiality that will build spatial boundaries, define activities of individuals and movement, and act as architectural space. Our environmental context consists of a diverse range of materials (particles and waves of energy, spectrum of light, sound waves, and chemical particles) that can be manipulated and formed to meet our needs. The opportunity before us today is to embrace the needs of organizational structures and aesthetics by designing the active context that surrounds us through the material energies that define it.

summary Today, material performance is regarded as one of the richest sources of innovation. Accordingly, architecture is shifting to practices by which the computational generation of form is directly driven by material characteristics. At the same time, there is a growing technological means for the varied composition of material, an extension of the digital chain that foregrounds a new need to engage materials at multiple scales within the design process. Recognising that the process of making materials affords perspectives not available with found materials, this paper reports the design and assembly of the fi bre reinforced composite structure Composite Territories, in which the property of bending is activated and varied so as to match solely through material means a desired form. This case study demonstrates how one might extend the geometric model so that it is able to engage and reconcile physical parameters that occur at different scales.

summary The application of digital design methods and technologies related to BIM and Integrated Practice Delivery are altering the how and what of architectural design. The way contemporary architecture is conceived and made is being transformed through the digital methods, processes and applications used in BIM. How architectural education and the design studio model evolve to reflect, interpret, translate, or challenge the multiplicitous and simultaneously variable modes of contemporary practice present opportunity and risk to this generation of digital scholars, educators and practitioners. Might we re-conceive the design studio as a venue in which a critical dialogue about how the many facets of architectural design practice are engaged? The possibilities afforded by BIM and Integrated Practice Delivery and digital design technologies are increasingly affecting what we make and simultaneously how we make as architects. Digital modeling of both geometry and information is replacing (or displacing) digital drawing. We see diminishing returns of the value of transforming three-dimensional spatial/formal ideas into two-dimensional conventional abstractions of those complex ideas. This comprehensive thinking promoted by BIM processes is one of the key advantages of using BIM leading to true design innovation. The reiterative learning process of design promoted in BIM promotes a rethinking of design studio education.

A definitively cognitive shift has been provoked from the traditional written semantic decoding to visual semantic decoding, different operational skills have acquired, and a shift of intersubjetive communications from the personal experiential space to the virtual space.

summary This paper presents a general 3D shape grammar interpreter named GRAMATICA and illustrates its use for the implementation of several shape grammars, including the one used in the design module of a specifi c shape grammar for mass-customized housing, called DESIGNA. The underlying shape representation, generation and control are discussed. The resulting shape grammar interpreter tries to support designers’ ways of thinking and working by acting as a bridge between shape grammars, the formalism that captures a design process, and a CAD application, for post-processing the computed design. This bridge is implemented by Rosetta, which ensures portability among different CAD applications.

summary The Sensing Touch Curtain prototype demonstrates one type of sensing that can be woven into soft building components. It is a computational textile that senses the nearness of a person or people and registers absolute touch on fabric through capacitive sensing. Capacitive sensing measures position and distance between the textile and a target object by sending forth electric signals.The methods of construction, method of electronic weaving and ways to consider models for somatosensory textiles are discussed in the paper. The Sensing Touch project frames an expanded role for soft architecture enclosures.

summary This paper aims to contribute to the discussion and our understanding of time-based mapping of visual information. Our approach is to enhance the traditional contextual static analysis through the acknowledgement of the body and the senses as key indicators of perceptual spatial experience. The time-based mapping paradigms have produced different ways of designing space by leveraging perceptual and other sensorial understanding, leading to the formation of variables (or parameters) which at the same time turn themselves as catalysts for other variables. The potential for a constantly evolving reinterpretation of the perceptual experience and for associated paradigm to shift suggest a multiplicity of design possibilities for urban areas that also need to adapt to the new requirements of contemporary living. In essence, the paper will bring to light the deployment of tools (digital and analogue) to turn static invisible data to dynamic visible data. In other words, we want to explore how the data can be treated as a generative system, enabling students and tutors alike to experience space which accounts for sensory performances and behaviours within the space.

summary The consideration about contemporary urban spaces incorporates a set of investigations linked to spatial implementation of digital technologies. This paper is about the different ways in which tangible computational interfaces have been arranged in urban environments, be they projections onto urban surfaces, interactive façades, or even architecture and interactive and/or responsive urban objects. It examines the nature of this phenomenon from perspectives presented by different authors and based on systematized information on a wide array of interfaces. It also posits some significant attributes that should be taken into account when performing a close examination of these interventions. Its aim is to contribute theoretical explorations to the study of hybrid urban spaces.

summary Parametric and generative modelling methods are ways in which computer models are made more flexible, and of formalising domain-specific knowledge. At present, no open standard exists for the interchange of parametric and generative information. The Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) which are an open standard for interoperability in building information models is presented as the base for an open standard in parametric modelling. The advantage of allowing parametric and generative representations are that the early design process can allow for more iteration and changes can be implemented quicker than with traditional models. This paper begins with a formal definition of what constitutes to be parametric and generative modelling methods and then proceeds to describe an open standard in which the interchange of components could be implemented. As an illustrative example of generative design, Frazer’s ‘Reptiles’ project from 1968 is reinterpreted.

summary In our times, in a complex and universal village where problems are intertwined and pervasive beyond our imagination, we need new approaches to deal with them – appropriately. In a previous work we highlighted the importance to reason ontologies: a ‘world’ f.i. a building – as a mental image – is not a Linnaeus’s classifi cation (structured set of entities) but a system (goals oriented set of classes) able to reasoning upon selectively chosen entities belonging to different Realms (ontology universes) (Fioravanti et al., 2011a). The general aim of our research– to be an effective aid to design – is to simulate wo/man as designer and user of designed spaces, hence how mental skill can be computably included in new tools able to tackle these problems. This paper is focused on the fi rst role: how actor-designers approach design problems and how the inference mechanism can help them and affect the design process. A ‘Building Object’ - the dual system of Spaces and Technology elements – is inferred in several ways according to different goals and the inference mechanism can, simulating human mental shortcuts, optimize thinking.

summary This paper outlines a research project that explores the participation in, and perception of, advanced technologies in architectural professional practice through a sociotechnical lens and presents empirical research findings from an online survey distributed to employees in five large-scale architectural practices in Sydney, Australia. This argues that while the computational design paradigm might be well accepted, understood, and documented in academic research contexts, the extent and ways that computational design thinking and methods are put-into-practice has to date been less explored. In engineering and construction, technology adoption studies since the mid 1990s have measured information technology (IT) use (Howard et al. 1998; Samuelson and Björk 2013). In architecture, research has also focused on quantifying IT use (Cichocka 2017), as well as the examination of specific practices such as building information modelling (BIM) (Cardoso Llach 2017; Herr and Fischer 2017; Son et al. 2015). With the notable exceptions of Daniel Cardoso Llach (2015; 2017) and Yanni Loukissas (2012), few scholars have explored advanced technologies in architectural practice from a sociotechnical perspective. This paper argues that a sociotechnical lens can net valuable insights into advanced technology engagement to inform pedagogical approaches in architectural education as well as strategies for continuing professional development.

summary In this work we present a proyect from a group of architects and engineers, part of an investigation team authorized by the Secretary of Science and Technology, where its evaluated the possibilities, ways and technologies used for the application of domotics in the world. A research was done with emphasized on small urban spaces and a design proposal was created, articulated and organized with micro architecture for specifics urban sectors of Cordoba city, Argentina. It was proposed to develop a prototype of urban roadside, with domotic technology, that is sustainable and that attends the needs of all kind of users, from childs to elders to disabled people. Plus it was contemplated the socioeconomics and constructive characteristics of the environment.

summary This paper describes a teaching experience conducted and carried out as part of the coursework of first year students of architecture at Strathclyde University. The workshop is the Third of three workshops planned to take place during the course of the first year studio, aimed at introducing new ways of thinking and introducing students to a new pattern of architectural education. The experiment was planned under the theme of “Evaluation” during the Final stage. A grammatical approach was chosen to deliver the methodology in the design studio, based on shape grammars.

title Diagramming in a digital environment

summary Research into digital design environments has explored modelling, generating and testing design propositions. When considering the broader design literature, however, we notice that a significant contribution to design is absent, that of diagramming. In the realm of architectural theory discourse in the past few years, diagramming has been much discussed with many interpretations of the activity. This paper will demonstrate that the development of digital techniques can change dramatically our ability to conceptualise and produce generative diagrams as previously not possible. The paper will follow the work done at the in the Melbourne School of Design. We will demonstrate how students are introduced to diagramming techniques and shown how to formulate a concept, then a program generator and to test a final proposal. The paper will also demonstrate how digital techniques can dramatically change the way we conceptualise and approach design problems. In this repeated teaching technique, we illustrate how digital systems contribute to conceptual diagrams and this contributes to the larger theoretical debate on diagramming techniques by introducing digital perspectives. The paper will therefore contribute to discussion on the ways in which digital systems can be engaged in substantive architectural teaching beyond the rote application of proprietary software and representative approaches.
