summary The problem considered in this paper is: “In what way do we design?” This paper concentrates on the early creative stages of the design process during which the designer gradually gathers the information about the problem, applying appropriate rules, tools and media. If the tools are chosen as a starting point of consideration, designing may be analysed as manual or digital. If we chose the medium - design may be considered as physical or virtual. The main thesis of this paper is that designing proceeds somewhere in between. “Somewhere in between” means the space where manual, digital, virtual are mixing, overlapping, and transforming one into the other. As a case study the process of designing of blurred function object is presented. In this experimental design studio we paid particular attention to the design process and we searched for the answer to the following questions: how to find an idea (what tools/media are helpful), how to express, fi x and transform that idea? In the paper the examples of students’ work will be presented and discussed.

summary The concepts and applications of Computer Aided Architectural Design (CAAD) have a predominant presence and impact on architectural design innovation and creativity. ASCAAD, in its 6th international conference, invited the learnt society of academics, researchers and professionals to debate the ubiquitous emerging role of CAAD in underpinning innovative design thinking processes and research in design education. The conference theme covered the following issues:  Computational research in design pedagogy and in practice  Intelligent agents, generative and parametric design  Building Information Modeling and Computer-supported design collaboration  Ubiquitous computing and interactive environments  Urban/ City/ regional planning and digital Modeling  Digital tools in design and construction  Mass customization Selected papers have been updated in this publication to reflect the constant quest to balance architectural thinking with operative techniques. It is well acknowledged that the advent of computation and information technology had profoundly altered architectural thinking. Design software and numerical fabrication have recast the role of form giving and shaping environments in architecture and opened up unprecedented opportunities of investigation and links with other scientific domains such as biomimcry, parametric design and modeling of urban and building environments. In this issue authors suggest a continuum between architectural analytical thinking and CAAD systems. Looking at the collaboration between authors of various backgrounds also strengthens this narrative that architecture is expanding beyond its traditional enquiry into historical and theoretical aspects into the world of multi-desciplinarity. It is evident from the diverse publications that CAAD is designed and utilized to expand the architectural pedagogy and practice into initiating and opening up the exploratory grounds of creation and productivity in design.

title The Possible Role of CAAD Systems in Initiating Innovation in the Design Studio

summary Design is a social phenomenon and the previous research highlights that design precedents and social interaction between designers including negotiation, collaboration and communications is essential to initiate creativity and the production of innovative design products. CAAD systems aim is to help the architect in formulating and developing design ideas. Researchers suggest that knowledge based systems can be integrated with CAAD systems so it would provide the architect with design knowledge that would him/ her to recall design precedents/ solutions thus link it to the design problems. Nevertheless, CAAD systems can provide limited help regarding the production of innovative design. Furthermore, the attention of the designers of knowledge based systems is focused on architects rather than the end product. On the other hand, most of the CAAD systems have web communication tools that enable designers to communicate their with colleagues and partners in business. However, none of these systems have the capability to capture useful knowledge from the design negotiations. Students of the third to fifth year at College of Architecture, University of Dammam were surveyed and interviewed to find out how far design tools, communications and resources would impact the production of innovative design projects. The survey results show that knowledge extracted from design negotiations would impact the innovative design outcome. It highlights also that present design precedents are not very helpful and design negotiations between students, tutors and other students are not documented thus fully incorporated into the design scheme. The paper argues that the future CAAD systems should be capable to recognize innovative design precedents, and incorporate knowledge that is resulted from design negotiations. This would help students to produce innovative design products.

summary This research explores the relationship between unexpected outcomes generated through parametric design tools and the design creative process. We conducted an empirical study to observe how designers behave while encountering unexpected outcomes using parametric design tools as well as other kinds of design tools. From our study, there are some indications that the space of possible design solutions of the participants was expanded with the existence of unexpected outcomes. The preliminary result is encouraging. Further studies may need to address experience designers and novice designers separately.

title Spatial ability, creativity, and studio performance in architectural design

summary Architectural design is a multifaceted discipline that requires many abilities, in particular creativity and spatial ability. In order to identify the relationships among spatial ability, creativity, and studio performance, an exploratory study was conducted at one Midwestern university in the USA. Twenty-one freshman architecture students participated in the study, which involved three tasks: (a) the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking that measures fluency and originality in creativity, (b) a group of general spatial ability tests, and (c) the computer-based Architectural Spatial Ability Test. Students’ scores on the tasks were compared with their studio performance grades using SPSS. Results show that studio performance correlated with the ASAT but did not correlate with the TTCT or a group of general spatial ability tests. These findings indicate that a student’s performing well does not necessarily mean that she or he can generate many different alternatives (fluency) or original ideas (originality) nor that the student possesses general spatial abilities. The findings show the complexity of architectural design components and reveal beginning design students’ architectural abilities.

summary Current trends in architectural practice such as an increased focus on sustainable design, integrated design, and the globalization of architecture are increasing the need for practitioners that are skilled in collaboration. Collaboration fosters innovation and creativity. It is a key operating principle for the 21st century and an important skill that an architecture student must be exposed to. The change in knowledge generation and creative problem solving is transforming education towards collaborative learning forcing architecture and engineering schools to address new course structures with “collaborative” aspect. The work presented in this paper draws its base from collaborative design learning. summary With the invention of computers, Architecture and other Engineering disciplines have undergone revolutionary developments offering new opportunities for improving efficiency and opening new frontiers for creativity. For example in architecture and urban planning, the discussions have been extended from conventional writings to cover cyberspace, virtual architecture and digital city. Moreover, computers have helped in the realization of many complex projects that would be inconceivable with traditional drawing techniques. This is clearly demonstrated in the works of Frank Gehry's, Zaha Hadid, Daniel Libeskind and many others. In deed, digital techniques have changed the design creative process and how the architects think. Traditionally the structured development architectural ideas from 2D drawings (plans, sections, elevations) towards 3D resolution has been replaced by more interactive approach of 2D & 3D. The changes that digital techniques have brought to the field of Architecture; including practice and education, can obviously be viewed from different angles and incite many discussions and questions. However, the purpose of this presentation is to discuss the role of digital techniques within the overall framework of project management in Gulf Housing Engineering. It starts the discussion with a brief on architecture and digital techniques in the Gulf Region, especially during the “boom period”; a period characterized by rapid production of buildings relying heavily on virtual images. It is against this background, the role of digital techniques is evaluated from a practice point of view. In fact in GHE, digital means are integral parts of the holistic project delivery process starting form initiation, to various design stages to construction ending with project completion. In this process emphasis is paid to the inter-relationships between IT Systems and Quality Control which in turn facilitate measuring, monitoring and reporting on various managerial, technical and design and budgetary aspects of the project. The presentation is supported by real case studies of GHE portfolio. It emphasizes that digital techniques should be an integral part of an overall process and should be seen as means to enhance efficiency and creativity; and should contribute to the betterment of the built environment

summary Milestone figures of architecture all have their different views on what comes first, form or function. They also vary in their definitions of creativity. Apparently, creativity is very strongly related to ideas and how they can be generated. It is also correlated with the process of thinking and developing. Creative products, whether architectural or otherwise, and whether tangible or intangible, are originated from ‘good ideas’ (Elnokaly, Elseragy and Alsaadani, 2008). On one hand, not any idea, or any good idea, can be considered creative but, on the other hand, any creative result can be traced back to a good idea that initiated it in the beginning (Goldschmit and Tatsa, 2005). Creativity in literature, music and other forms of art is immeasurable and unbounded by constraints of physical reality. Musicians, painters and sculptors do not create within tight restrictions. They create what becomes their own mind’s intellectual property, and viewers or listeners are free to interpret these creations from whichever angle they choose. However, this is not the case with architects, whose creations and creative products are always bound with different physical constraints that may be related to the building location, social and cultural values related to the context, environmental performance and energy efficiency, and many more (Elnokaly, Elseragy and Alsaadani, 2008). Remarkably, over the last three decades computers have dominated in almost all areas of design, taking over the burden of repetitive tasks so that the designers and students can focus on the act of creation. Computer aided design has been used for a long time as a tool of drafting, however in this last decade this tool of representation is being replaced by simulation in different areas such as simulation of form, function and environment. Thus, the crafting of objects is moving towards the generation of forms and integrated systems through designer-authored computational processes. The emergence and adoption of computational technologies has significantly changed design and design education beyond the replacement of drawing boards with computers or pens and paper with computer-aided design (CAD) computer-aided engineering (CAE) applications. This paper highlights the influence of the evolving transformation from Computer Aided Design (CAD) to Computational Design (CD) and how this presents a profound shift in creative design thinking and education. Computational-based design and simulation represent new tools that encourage designers and artists to continue progression of novel modes of design thinking and creativity for the 21st century designers. Today computational design calls for new ideas that will transcend conventional boundaries and support creative insights through design and into design. However, it is still believed that in architecture education one should not replace the design process and creative thinking at early stages by software tools that shape both process and final product which may become a limitation for creative designs to adapt to the decisions and metaphors chosen by the simulation tool. This paper explores the development of Computer Aided Design (CAD) to Computational Design (CD) Tools and their impact on contemporary design education and creative design.

summary This paper describes a design experiment with the use of Voronoi Diagrams, a systematic division of the metric space based on a set of points. Automated procedures were used in the process: a script that generated sets of random points and a plug in that automatically generated polygons based on these points. Computer models, scale models and full scale prototypes were produced in order to develop construction details and preview results. It was possible to conclude that the use of a generative method along with automated procedures is far from restricting creativity, allowing the quick exploration of multiple design alternatives.

summary A city is a typical complex system that composed of billions of individual factors that interact with each other, and evolve dynamically. Parametric design method considers design conditions as the parameters of form generation, and introduces bottom-up emergent process in computers into architectural design. Because of such mechanism, it is supposed that parametric design can be applied in urban design problems, and brings rationality and creativity into urban design. In the year 2011, a joint design studio of Princeton University, Tokyo University and Tsinghua University is carried out. Graduate students from the three universities dive into the design of a micro-city that expands from Haneda airport in Tokyo bay area. The design studio in Tsinghua lasts for 16 weeks, and the students are asked to develop their ideas in a parametric way, and explore the potential of bottom-up generation of urban design using computer tools.

summary Can we design CAAD to enhance creativity? CAAD is often considered a tool that assists architects in design by managing documentation and facilitating visualization. While there has been anecdotal concern that CAAD inhibits creativity, there is empirical evidence that CAAD can enhance creativity. The challenge is to develop principles for designing CAAD for creativity based on theoretical and empirical research on recognizing and enhancing individual and distributed creative cognition. This presentation describes three concepts that can lead to principles for designing CAAD to enhance human creativity: recognition, perception, and diversity. // 1. Recognition: A framework for recognizing and evaluating creative design, shown in Figure 1, is developed based on research in psychology and design science that includes novelty, value, and surprise. This framework provides a basis for comparing and evaluating the impact of CAAD on creativity. 2. Perception: Perception affects cognition and therefore interaction design is a critical component of designing CAAD for creativity. The results of an empirical study, shown in Figure 2, using a protocol analysis find that changing perception to include tangible user interfaces has a positive effect on creative cognition. These results lead to design principles for increasing perceptual modalities in future CAAD systems. 3. Diversity: A theoretical framework for social and collective intelligence in design show how an increase in cognitive diversity leads to an increase in innovation. Using this framework we can develop design processes that combine the benefits of individual, team, and crowdsourced design ideas, as shown in Figure 3.

summary The general thematic of our work tackles the question of the generative design tool efficiency to stimulate a creative architectural conception in the context of sustainable development. We focus our point of view on the conceptual research phases. We would like to characterise the human creative mechanisms in a situation of generative assistance where digital tool reveals some degree of autonomy and incorporates environmental constraints. Thus, we implement an evolutionary design tool in which energetic performances of the analogon are used in order to orient the evolution. Our tool is based on an interactive genetic algorithm that ensures both a broad exploration of the solutions space and the subjective user preferences accounting. Users groups were confronted to the tool in a conception situation and creativity was evaluated and characterized.

summary The premise of this paper addresses the limited shared vocabulary of landscape architecture and architectural design - evident in the application of terms such as ‘spatial design’ and ‘spatial planning’. In their current usage, such terms emphasize the visible, terrestrial, pedestrian perspective level, often to the absolute exclusion of a spatial, ie. volumetric, comprehension of the environment. This deficit is acutely evident in the education of Landscape Architecture and Architecture, and discussion of their shared ground. The dominant document to map such analysis and design is the plan, or 3d-dimensional representations of the same, restricted to an extrusion or height map. GIS techniques in spatial design tend to be weighted towards visual, surface based data (slope analysis, exposure, viewshed etc.). Our goal within this domain lies in transforming aspects of the intangible - the characteristics of open space itself - into a form that is legible, quantifiable, and malleable.

summary It is an immutable truth that architecture ultimately exists for humans. Similarly, it is a well-known fact that countless architectural concepts derived and evolved to restrain development, to control building projects and to consider environment are eventually for the benefit of humans. Architecture today, however, is in the hands of a few renowned architects even though it is supposed to refl ect human beings and times and to work for everyone. Is it too much to say that everyone should have a say in the space used by many? In that respect, we have devised DADL System. Anyone, Anytime, Anywhere. The system is an architectural game that stimulates human instincts, has online communities and is easily accessible by Anyone Anytime and Anywhere (3A Rules). DADL System aims to gather users’ ideas and develop architecture, which is essentially enabled by the ‘Advise’ feature. Advise is designed to lead users to think about architecture voluntarily and to guide them to express their ideas. The structure and contents of Advises are very important factors in DADL System. Also, it is divided into two domains, i.e. Web and Mobile, where data exchange is enabled via cloud computing, establishing a base in compliance with the ‘3A’ Rules. The DADL System supports the architecture of everyone without relying on opinions of a few, so as to open the infi nitive potential for communication between architecture and humans, which today’s architecture should advocate.

summary Exploring problems through multiple alternatives is a key aspect of design. In this paper, we present a prototype system as an extension to existing parametric CAD tools that enables parallel generation and editing of design alternatives. The system is built on two fundamental ideas. First, use of subjunctive dependency graphs enables simultaneous work on multiple design variations. These graphs capture and reveal complex data flow across alternative parametric CAD models. Second, prototype-based modeling provides a weak notion of inheritance enabling incremental description of differences between alternatives. The system is intended to be general enough to be used in different CAD platforms and other systems using graph-based modeling. The three basic system functions are definition of alternatives (variations) using prototype-based modeling, structural and parametric divergences of the prototypes, and interactive comparison. The goal of this research is consistent with the general qualities expected from any creativity support tools: enabling exploration and simultaneous development of variations.

summary The production of Innovative projects is the ultimate goal of architects and the previous research highlighted that certain negotiation, collaboration and communications activities are essential to initiate creativity and produce innovative design products. CAAD systems help the architect in formulating and developing design ideas. Research studies have concentrated on the usability and shortages of these systems, the users' attitude, knowledge and their acceptance of these systems. However, few studies have investigated the relation between the social settings of a design studio and the utilization of CAAD systems. This research explores the link between the social settings and the utilization of CAAD in producing innovative design products. It argues that certain design studio's settings would affect the use of CAAD systems in an innovative way. In 2012, students at college of Architecture, University of Dammam were surveyed to find out how the design studio's settings would support/ hinder the utilization of CAAD systems. The survey results showed that innovative students, who undertake certain design and communication tasks, found that CAAD systems are more useful in producing innovative projects. The study makes recommendations on how to set healthy social interaction conditions in the design studio and initiate innovative behaviour while using CAAD systems during the design process.

title Using Situated FBS Ontology to Explore Designers' Patterns of Behavior in Parametric Environments

summary Current literature suggests that there is limited empirical evidence supporting the understanding of designers’ behavior or processes in parametric design environments (PDEs). This on-going study explores designers’ patterns of behavior in PDEs and its relationship with design creativity. To achieve this, we introduce the situated function-behavior-structure (FBS) model to develop a customized coding scheme for future protocol studies. This FBS ontological model has been adapted to reflect the characteristics of parametric design. We propose to apply the results of the protocol analysis in identifying three levels of design behavior patterns: behavior patterns derived from design processes, behavior patterns derived from the whole design life-cycle and those derived from the two levels of parametric design activities (design knowledge based activities and rule algorithm based activities). Future experiments and subsequent protocol analysis will apply the coding scheme to identify these behavioral patterns. The relationship with design creativity will then be explored by mapping the identified behavior patterns against the design outcome assessment.

title Micro-Simulation Function to Display Textual Data in Virtual Reality

summary Virtual reality creates an effective communication platform with a high degree of perception and exploration, increasing the benefits of VR applied functions.This research paper reports a virtual reality function of using the micro-simulation editor-player with XML file in the virtual reality environment.The details of the function are presented.The function aiming at combining visual and textual data in VR model visualisation, was developed by the researcher, and was included in the micro-simulation plug-in of a virtual reality program,VR Studio version 6, previously known as UC-Win/Road, by the program developers.The research paper discusses the computer simulation techniques and uses in virtual reality in general.The research paper proceeds to introduce a case study of construction process visualization in the virtual reality environment, in which the newly developed function is utilized to simultaneously visualise data reports related to the stages of VR model visualisation.The concluding remarks accentuate this micro-simulation function with its potential uses in different fields.

summary It is noted that architects need new and quick methods designing the historic architectural styles, as well as restoring the historical urban areas particularly the Islamic ones. These designs and restorations should adapt to the basics of the Islamic style used; general concept, module and features. Smart Geometry provides advanced design concepts and increases alternative variations. Parametric design softwares also add more rules and relations on the design process. Obviously, the Islamic module and proportions are used as design generators that result in extracting a number of alternatives easily in a little time. Generative Components (GC) is the parametric software used to achieve the desired objectives of this research.

summary Ecological and environmental issues are playing an important and larger role in corporate and manufacturing strategies. For complete creative design process, buildings require both for construction and manufacturing, due to their comparatively long life cycle for maintenance, significant raw material and energy resources. Thinking in terms of product life cycles is one of the challenges facing manufacturers today. “Life Cycle Management” (LCM) considers the product life cycle as a whole and optimizes the interaction of product design, construction, manufacturing and life cycle activities. The goal of this approach is to protect resources and maximize the effectiveness during usage by means of Life Cycle Assessment, Product Data Management, Technical Support and last but not least by Life Cycle Costing. In this paper the environmental consciousness issues pertaining to design, construction, manufacturing and operations management are presented through computer intelligent technologies of this 21century. So, this paper shows the existing approaches of LCM and discusses their visions and further development.
