summary Students engage in Social Networks (SN) as a form of interaction with friends and tutors, as news or learning resource, to make their voices heard or to listen to other views and many more. Online SN work in close association with offline SN to form a blended social environment that greatly enables and enhances students’ learning. Some Schools of Architecture have struggled or failed to engage in the potential of SNor their respective University’s online Learning Management Systems (LMS). Despite efforts to facilitate blended learning environments or to engage students in problem-based learning activities architectural education often fails to tap into the rich resources that online social learning environments offers through their collective and social intelligence of its users. This paper proposes a framework for SN architectural education that provides opportunities for linking the academic LMS with private or professional SN such that it enhances the learning experience and deepens the knowledge of the students. The paper proposes ways of utilising SN supported learning environments in other areas of the curriculum and concludes with directions of how this framework can be employed in professional settings.

summary In recent years, academia has deviated from the lecture-based model to a hybridized system of instruction and experiential learning. Experiential learning aids students in understanding collaborative processes in architectural praxis and exposes them to engaging learning opportunities, a critical component of architectural studio education (Nijholt et al. 2013). During the COVID-19 outbreak, students are barred from accessing on-campus facilities. This causes a redevelopment of curricular delivery and disrupts experiential learning which heavily relies on in-person interaction. It is imperative for instructors to retain experiential learning in the transition to virtual instruction. This paper explores experiential learning within virtual platforms for instruction. Through outlining the implementation of technologies, capitalizing on connectivity, and maximizing opportunity for digital problem solving, the authors posit a framework that other educators may adopt. The paper concludes with a case study of a virtual design-build project, and the various techniques implemented in retaining experiential learning during the pandemic.

summary We present and discuss a didactic for augmenting architectural design education with computational design techniques via integrative feedback loops and show examples of student projects. Our goal is to embed new technical skills into existing design abilities as quickly as possible, in order to enable our students to exploit and explore the extended capabilities of digital design techniques within the framework of architectural design projects. We instigate a process of continuous mutual feedback between different fields: on the one hand between technique-based exercises and design-related steps, and on the other hand between the digital and the physical. Through oscillation and feedback, the newly learned skills are directly interwoven with the existing ones. Special emphasis is put on the illuminative effects of transitions between different media and on issues of fabrication.

summary This paper discusses the changing modes of conception, production and consumption of architecture within the larger open source discourse. Analogies are drawn from the field of computer science to conceptually understand the relevance of ideas like hacktivism, crowdsourcing, open source, social media and user-centric approaches with regard to architecture in the twenty-first century. These ideas are discussed in relationship with the long lineage of research carried out within the architectural community regarding user participation in design. Contemporary interpretation of similar ideas is discussed with relation to how they could be systematically classified based on the nature of the “open” and the “source” as an approach toward design and architecture. Hybridizing these approaches leads to what can be termed as “hackitecture,” a systemic appropriation of the hacker culture and the open source movement as an architectural agency. The essay then argues for an open source framework for architecture where obvious differences between the user and designer are dissolved, and wherein the conception-to-production and eventual conception of the architectural “object” exists as a continuum. Such a framework is discussed with respect to the technological shift emerging within the discipline. The essay concludes with the possibility of situating such processes within the larger post-capitalist sociopolitical turmoil seen today while discussing the problematics of such an approach.

summary In this paper we aimed at the development of a novel tool to facilitate the structured analysis of architectural construction principles, materials and production methods in digital design and fabrication practices. In order to assist the understanding and teaching of these subjects, we employed a taxonomy of spatial design construction (Vrouwe 2013). By using the taxonomy, we analysed and categorised 34 parametric structures published in the IJAC Journal (2002-2014). Informed by this study, we aligned the initial taxonomy using various framing strategies. As a result we developed a new framework for spatial design construction specifically customised for the design and fabrication of parametric structures which can potentially serve as a constructive tool to create a novel design learning environment and integrated teaching strategies.

summary This paper provides a critical overview of some of the fundamental issues regarding the adoption and integration of BIM – both as a method and as a technology – in Architectural education. It aims to establish a common ground for the rationale behind such integration and reflects on the past and present state of the cultural, intellectual, professional and technological context of Architecture. The paper will introduce the core issues to be considered in order to succeed in this challenging and transformational process. It will also introduce a framework for a gradual and progressive adoption of BIM and integrated design in the architectural curriculum.

title Towards a Genome for Zero Carbon Retrofit of UK Housing

summary The United Kingdom has some of the worst insulated housing stock in Northern Europe. This is in part due to the age of housing in the UK, with over 90% being built before 1990 [McCrone 2017, Piddington 2020]. Moreover, 85% of current UK housing will still be in use in 2050 by which stage their Government are targeting Net Carbon Zero [Eyre 2019]. Domestic energy use accounts for around 25% of UK carbon emissions. The UK will need to retrofit 20 million dwellings in order to meet this target. If this delivery were evenly spread, it would equate to over 2,000 retrofit completions each day. Government-funded initiatives are stimulating the market, with upwards of 60,000 social housing retrofits planned for 2023, but it is clear that a system must be developed to enable the design and implementation of housing-stock improvement at a large scale.This paper charts the 20-year development of a digital approach to the design for low-carbon domestic retrofit by architects Constructive Thinking Studio Limited and thence documents the emergence of a collaborative approach to retrofit patterns on a National scale. The author has led the Research and Development stream of this practice, developing a Building Information Modelling methodology and integrated Energy Modelling techniques to optimise design for housing retrofit [Georgiadou 2019, Ben 2020], and then inform a growing palette of details and a database of validated solutions [Moorhouse 2013] that can grow and be used to predict options for future projects [D’Angelo 2022]. The data is augmented by monitoring energy and environmental performance, enabling a growing body of knowledge that can be aligned with existing big data to simulate the benefits of nationwide stock improvement. The paper outlines incremental case studies and collaborative methods pivotal in developing this work The proposed outcome of the work is a Retrofit Genome that is available at a national level.

There has been a resurgence in the number of do-it-yourself cooperatives initiated by non-designer citizens, activists, artists and designers. In parallel to these developments, a plethora of social technologies, tools and platforms have been developed to include a variety of stakeholders in the architectural design, urban design, planning and decision-making processes. Crowdsourcing and crowdfunding applications started to be widely used to tap into the wisdom of the crowd. Novel developments in parametric design and digital fabrication created possibilities for user participation in the making of customized and highly diversified products. With the combination of artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, smart buildings, autonomous devices, robots and software started to transform into agents and active participants. The attempts to harness collective human and artificial intelligence opened up new avenues for combining practice, research and education. On the other hand, there is a growing concern over the possible negative impact of the digital devices, tools, platforms and agents integrated in the making of our buildings and cities, public, private and collective spaces. Examples of those are the potential exclusion of vulnerable and disadvantaged citizens, transfer of citizen power to the corporations, privatization of personal life and data, as well as spatial exclusion through increased technological control and surveillance.

summary Robotic additive manufacturing has garnered significant research and development interest due to its transformative potential in architecture, engineering, and construction as a cost-effective, material-efficient, and energy-saving fabrication method. However, despite its potential, conventional approaches heavily depend on meticulously optimized work environments, as robotic arms possess limited information regarding their immediate surroundings (Bechthold, 2010; Bechthold & King, 2013). Furthermore, such approaches are often restricted to planar build surfaces and slicing algorithms due to computational and physical practicality, which consequently limits the feasibility of robotic solutions in scenarios involving complex geometries and materials. Building on previous work (Çapunaman et al., 2022), this research investigates conformal 3D printing of clay using a 6 degrees-of-freedom robot arm and a vision-based sensing framework on parametrically reconfigurable tensile hyperbolic paraboloid (hypar) formwork. In this paper, we present the implementation details of the formwork system, share findings from preliminary testing of the proposed workflow, and demonstrate application feasibility through a design exercise that aims to fabricate unique components for a poly-hypar surface structure. The formwork system also offers parametric control over generating complex, non-planar tensile surfaces to be printed on. Within the scope of this workflow, the vision-based sensing framework is employed to generate a digital twin informing iterative tuning of the formwork geometry and conformal toolpath planning on scanned geometries. Additionally, we utilized the augmented fabrication framework to observe and analyze deformations in the printed clay body that occurs during air drying. The proposed workflow, in conjunction with the vision-based sensing framework and the reconfigurable formwork, aims to minimize time and material waste in custom formwork fabrication and printing support materials for complex geometric panels and shell structures.

This research starts from the assumption that Cybersemiotics, initially defined by the Philosopher and Information Scientist Dr. Søren Brier - and therefore gathers concepts of Second Order Cybernetics and Semiotics of Charles Sanders Peirce - while meta-theory designed and developed to promote transdisciplinarity, can bring other perspectives and base updated reflections in order to produce a framework for architectural design processes that make use of digital mediation, especially Parametric Design.

summary The paper describes our research efforts seeking to assess the potential use of immersive simulation through virtual reality (VR) environments as a tool for aiding the design of architectural spatial experiences. By making use of a fully implemented HMD-based VR Environment in our school at Ball State University we conducted a controlled experiment with novice design students. After the evaluation of results of the experiment we have found evidence of the positive impact of the use of the system in design education. We will further investigate on the best practices to incorporate its pervasive use based on high-impact simplified methods.

summary Shape-memory polymers (SMPs) are an emerging class of “smart materials” that have dual-shape capability. They are able to undergo significant deformation when exposed to an external stimulus such as heat or light. SMPs have been widely investigated within the biomedicine and aerospace industries; however, their potential has yet to be explored within an architectural framework. The research presented in this paper begins an investigation into the morphological behavior ofSMPs toward a deployable, adaptive architecture. The structure’s ease of assembly, compact storage, transportability and configurable properties offer promising applications in emergency and disaster relief shelters, lightweight recreational structures and a variety of other applications in the temporary construction and aerospace industry. This paper explores the use of SMPs through the development of a dynamic actuator that links a series of interconnected panels creating overall form to a self-standing structure. The shape-shifting behavior of the SMP allows the dynamic actuator to become flexible when storage and transportability are required. Alternatively, when exposed to the appropriate temperature range, the actuator is capable of returning to its memorized state for on-site deployment. Through a series ofprototypes, this paper will provide a fundamental understanding of the SMP’s thermo-mechanicalproperties toward deployable, adaptive architecture.

summary In a context of a slow uptake of the Building Information Modeling (BIM) methodology in the Flemish region, we present the results of an educational research project, carried out over 4 semesters, in a multi-disciplinary, cross-campus collaboration. This project fosters an improved application of BIM, information management and communication, by organizing building teams involving students from different schools.The project partners collaborated on a shared framework of supportive learning material, collaboration scenarios between teams of students and the integration of digital tools for communication, information management and collaboration in the curriculum.This article, in particular, will elaborate on one of the collaborative exercises, involving architecture and engineering students, using BIM for modeling, information exchange and model evaluation.

summary Academic Libraries (ALs) design concept has been under a changing process, precipitated by both internal needs and external pressures including changes in the societal context of education, the information services and documentation storage requirements. This paper is focused on a model of form and function to assess AL’ in use, in order to explore ways for better understanding their performance. The proposed model was developed within the scope of a wider research project and makes both use of Post-Occupancy Evaluation and of Space Syntax procedures in order to explore how the spatial configuration influences the performance and use of ALs space. It considers ALs building typology as spatial, physical and social systems, by: 1) measuring users satisfaction about how well the space supports their requirements; and 2) providing information on how architecture and spatial design support - enable and generate - flows of information, communication and knowledge.The analysis provides evidence suggesting that ALs’ spatial system influences study performance, patterns of use and co-presence of its users. The results of data inputs point out prospective strategies about space intervention.

summary For a long time, robotic arms have been a common sight in many industries. Now, robots are rapidly entering architectural education. Within the past few years, more than 20 architectural faculties throughout the world have set up experimental labs with one or more robotic arms. This paper will discuss the use of robots in education beyond the scope of CNC fabrication, as open interfaces that confront students with problem-solving, geometry, and programming.

summary This paper proposes an architectural system interactive to both users and the environmental condition in real-time. While nature acts as a global control for the system, the user can alter it locally. Due to the increasing digitization of our contemporary culture, there is an unprecedented capacity for information to flow in our physical and socially net-worked world that can be used to inform design problems and processes. Live and real-time information sources, like Twitter, could be virtually scanned for specific data input associated to a par-ticular geometrical manipulation. This process enables a collective group of users to inform the system. As the number of users increases there is collaboration for defining the form which is different from single user interaction. summary This paper presents the impacts of different street orientations and street zones of a typical Dutch residential area on micro-scale human thermal comfort. The spatial and temporal variation of mean radiant temperature (T mrt ) of a typical summer day in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, is simulated by using an established long- and short-wave 3D radiation fluxes model (SOLWEIG). This model calculates human radiation load and expresses this as a T mrt . Hereby we simulate and analyse the T mrt variations for three zones of a street consisting of a centre area for cars and the adjacent pedestrian zones for pedestrians and bicycles. The streets are azimuth rotated. The simulation and analysis results show various T mrt patterns of the three zones in the different orientations at different periods during daytime. We show that the spatial distribution of T mrt at street level strongly depends on street orientation and street zone. This is crucial since optimizing street configuration will directly influence the human thermal comfort in relation to street orientation and street zone. Finally we present a time adjusted framework of thermal comfort and classify the various T mrt for each zone and orientation.

title Some Notes on the Incompleteness Theorem and Shape Grammars

summary The paper presents a critique of the Shape Grammar paradigm viewed through the lens of the incompleteness theorem of Gödel. Shape Grammars have been extensively researched through many lenses. Their productive systemic nature was the focus of the first papers along with more recent treatises in the field while their use in analysis of known building styles has been extensive and a proven mechanism for style analysis. It is surprising though that use of Shape Grammars in actual design in practice however has been minimal. The architectural community has not actively used the paradigm in the design of real buildings, probably because of the rigid analytical approach to style and rules, following from the academic analysis that the paradigm has been subjected to. However I propose that there is another underlying reason, other than the rigid approach to construct a Shape Grammar. The nature of the concurrent application and creation of the rules lies close to the incompleteness theorem of Gödel, that uses a multitude of Turing Machines to prove that a from a set of True Axioms -A- we will never be able to determine if all sentences are true, without having to invent new axioms, outside the initial set -A-, thus unproven in terms of their true or false nature. Negation of this possibility drives us to the conclusion that true Design can never be feature -complete and thus can never be placed in a trusted framework that we all agree or believe it to be the complete truth.
