summary A method for quantifying ambient surveillance is presented, which is based on probabilistic-possibilistic perception. The human surveillance of a scene through observing camera sensed images on a monitor is modeled in three steps. First immersion of the observer is simulated by modeling perception of the scene from the camera locations using probabilistic perception approach. The perceptions are thereafter combined by means of probabilistic union, simulating simultaneous watching of the scene from multiple viewing positions. As third step the combined perceptions are converted to a possibility using triangular possibility density function. The latter step accounts for the fact that surveillance takes place via monitor depiction and not directly as perception of the actual physical scene. The method is described and demonstrated by means of an ambient surveillance application involving three cameras. The resulting possibility of perception is compared to the case of using two cameras, quantifying the added value of additional camera as to surveillance.

summary ‘Ambient Terrain’ explores the application of large-scale, sensor-based site analysis. The research develops various techniques dealing with the logging, storage, retrieval, analysis, and representation of sensor and image-based data. These techniques could be utilized in concert with traditional site preparation and site information gathering processes, and could arguably serve to reevaluate the site preparation process altogether in a manner which not only focuses on terrestrial data, but also on metrics which are dynamic and multidimensional.The research proposes direct applications for urban space and the built environment, in the modes of site appraisal, design and the generation of new spatial strategies.

In his works, the sense it reads in transit, at the edges, in the dialogue between screens and languages, and in the virtuosity detail. The purpose is to make the perception less automatic to humanize the images and bring back sense to them. summary This paper questions the context and meaning of space or the ‘spatial’ within the current architectural and urban rhetoric as suggested by Vidler (2011) in his essay Transparency and Utopia: Constructing the void from Pascal to Foucault. As a case in point this paper further introduces the context of ‘non-space’ as supposedly introduced by Le Corbusier in his Potato Building typology studies conducted during the early 1960s. In both the above instances the concept of ‘enlightment space’ or a geometrical, rational gridded and above all transparent space is contrived and skewed to accommodate alternate determinates – space in this instance, according to Vidler; no longer operates as an instrument of monumental construction but rather as an agent of monumental dissolution. Given the above definition, the paper critically evaluates the role of computational design within this spatial decomposition.

title The Return of Nature as an Operative Model: Decoding of Material Properties as Generative Inputs to the Form-Making Process

summary The abandonment of nature as an architectural model and the redefinition of the relationship between form and material were two of the main consequences of industrialization for modern architecture. While nature was replaced by the machine as a model for architecture, industrial production suppressed the craftsman's knowledge of the material and the associated techniques once essential to the form-making process. Thus, the replacement of nature as a model implied that principles once related to natural processes started to be seen as industrial values, i.e., the economy of means stopped being recognized as a quality related to natural form-making processes and became a demand of industrial production. Nowadays, material properties and nature are being reintroduced into architecture with the help of digital technologies; that is, the return of nature though computation. As a result, nature has become an operational model as opposed to the visual or iconic one it used to be; its inner qualities and processes are being decoded in order to inform the form-making process and foster innovative digital ornamentation.

summary Governments in Australia are faced with policy implementation that mandates higher energy efficient housing (Foran, Lenzen & Dey 2005). To this effect, the National Construction Code (NCC) 2013 stipulates the minimum energy performance for residential buildings as 114MJ/m2 per annum or 6 stars on an energy rating scale. Compliance with this minimum is mandatory but there are several methods through which residential buildings can be rated to comply with the deemed to satisfy provisions outlined in the NCC. FirstRate5 is by far the most commonly used simulation software used in Victoria, Australia. Meanwhile, Building Information Modelling (BIM), using software such as ArchiCAD has gained a foothold in the industry. The energy simulation software within ArchiCAD, EcoDesigner, enables the reporting on the energy performance based on BIM elements that contain thermal information. This research is founded on a comparative study between FirstRate5 and EcoDesigner. Three building types were analysed and compared. The comparison finds significant differences between simulations, being, measured areas, thermal loads and potentially serious shortcomings within FirstRate5, that are discussed along with the future potential of a fully BIM-integrated model for energy rating certification in Victoria.

summary Spatial configurations can be perceived through a variety of descriptions of their physical form and structure. Each description can offer an autonomous interpretation or be combined with others parathetically, in a logic of multiple distinct layers. However it is asserted that meaningful information can be extracted from a simultaneous view of sets of descriptions within a high-dimensional structure. This paper investigates the possibility of conducting a comparative analysis and classification of non-typical spatial formations based on the synchronous view of multiple quantifiable spatial attributes. Under the hypothesis of a reciprocal definition of spatial structure and occupation practices, it is intended to identify distinct generic spatial types in order to subsequently determine a range of suitable respective generic use types. This investigation supports the formulation of strategies for the reactivation of unused, residual urban voids, currently being addressed by the research programme titled "Strategies to network urban interventions in the Metropolitan Centre of Athens". The programme is carried out by the School of Architecture of the National Technical University of Athens in collaboration with the Region of Attica, under the scientific coordination of Professor Dr. Parmenidis (2013).

The main performance criteria is structure. Two design prototypes are being discussed. summary In relation to cities, wind is one of the less studied meteorological parameter. Constant vertical rate variations from meso scale to micro scale, altogether with strenght, direction, velocity of the urban canyon, makes the wind a complex subject of study. To achieve this, a methodological strategy that addresses the wind's multi dimensionality was raised. It was aplied to Punta Arenas, the southernmost city in the world, where most of the time winds come 90% from the same direction with speeds reaching 128 km/h. Wind's constant directional behavior allows the recognition of areodynamic phenomena produced, in the first instance, for the wind profiles influenced by the urban rugosity and then, at morphologycal level, the aerodynamic behavior of the layered fluids over the building bodies, generating a regular pattern between solids and fluids. The strong winds in cities with cold climate influence the use of public spaces, which, not being designed under this conditions, do not develop proper levels of thermal comfort.

summary For the built environment's transformation we are confronted with complex dynamics connected to economic, ecologic and demographic change (Czerkauer-Yamu et al., 2013; Yamu, 2014). In general, cities are complex systems being a "heterogeneous mosaic" of a variety of cultures and functions, characterised by diverging perceptions and interests (ibid). The juxtaposed perceptions and interests in relation to ongoing spatial processes of change create a particularly complex situation. Thus, for planning processes we are in need of approaches that are able to cope not only with the urban complexity but also allow for participatory processes to empower citizens. This paper presents the approach of using Digital Twins in virtual reality (VR) for civic engagement in urban planning, enriched with quantitative and qualitative empirical data as one promising approach to tackle not only the complexity of cities but also involve citizens in the planning process.

summary Earthquakes have progressively destroyed the Chilean built heritage over the years, not only due to the initial devastation they produce, but also as a result of the applied reconstruction approaches that follow. The design of reconstruction projects has usually aimed to re-establish the previous built form of historic buildings; generating new ‘heritage’ constructions that try to imitate only the appearance of previous ones rather than understanding that heritage, in the case studied, includes a sustainable mode of construction. This issue occurs in places where previous records are sometimes non-existent, which poses the question of authenticity. Considering the regularity of earthquakes in Chile, the role of accurate recording technologies, such as 3D laser scanning, becomes relevant. Their implications for new and existing architectures in the re-construction process include being a virtual database for demolition, retrofitting, intervention or replica. This paper examines the survey of the church of San Lorenzo de Tarapacá obtained in January 2013, and discusses how this, in conjunction with previous records, might impact on what is considered heritage and the design of future reconstructions.

summary Aggregate Architectures challenge the common notion of architectural structures as being immutable, permanent and controllable. Aggregate Architectures are understood as material systems consisting of large masses of granules—designed or natural—interacting with each other only through loose, frictional contact. As a consequence, they take the realm of structural stability and architectural planning into entire re-configurability and into merely probable predictions of their prospective behavior. This renders them relevant within the paradigm of Adaptive Architecture.The challenge to the designer is to move away from thinking in terms of clearly defined local and global assembly systems and to acquire tools and modes of design that allow for observation and interaction with the evolving granular architectures. In this context, the focus of the presented researchproject is on the relevance of mathematically based simulations as tools of investigation and design.The paper introduces the field of Aggregate Architectures. Consequently experimental and simulation methods for granulates will be outlined and compared. Different modeling and collision-detection methods for non-convex particles are shown and applied in benchmarking simulations for a full-scale architectural prototype. The potential for micro-mechanical simulation analysis within architectural applications are demonstrated and further areas of research outlined.

Our goal is to generate spaces to modify that environment through an interface that dialogues with stimuli and actions.Our interest is to connect vulnerable individuals to possible acts of appropriation that is, being able to perform a symbolic ownership of their environments. For doing that, we see the opportunity of using Arduino within the context of differential pedagogy for children with special needs. All this, considering the evident deficiencies of that kind of educational facilities, particularly regarding children with motor disabilities daily activities.

title POP-OP: A Shape Memory-Based Morphing Wall

summary Recent tendencies in architecture take a unique point of view, with aesthetically novel and unnatural sensibilities emerging from a close scrutiny and study of apparently natural systems. These tendencies are being driven by mathematical and computational abstractions that transform the way we understand the matterinformation relationship. This project was inspired by Op Art, a twentieth century art movement and style in which artists sought to create an impression of movement on an image surface by means of an optical illusion. Passive elements consisting of composite laminates were produced with the goal of creating lightweight, semi-rigid, and nearly transparent pieces. The incorporation of active materials comprised a unique aspect of this project: the investigation of surface movement through controlled and repeatable deformation of the composite structure using shape memory alloy (SMA) wiring technology. The integration of composite materials with SMA wiring and Arduino automation control resulted in an architectural wall that incorporated perceptual and actual motion.

summary Various Rapid Prototyping methods have been available for the production of physical architectural models for a few years. This paper highlights in particular the advantages of 3D printing for the production of detailed architectural models. In addition, the current challenges for the creation and transfer of data are explained. Furthermore, new methods are being developed in order to improve both the technical and economic boundary conditions for the application of 3DP. This makes the production of models with very detailed interior rooms possible. The internal details are made visible by dividing the complex overall model into individual models connected by means of an innovative plug-in system. Finally, two case studies are shown in which the developed methods are applied in order to implement detailed architectural models. Additional information about manufacturing time and costs of the architectural models in the two case studies is given.

Highly technology- mediated and interdisciplinary architectural/engineering practices have been monitored and studied in their real-life project contexts.Through comparative case analyses, a conceptual framework has been developed and used to represent and analyse emerging socio- technical networks and the ways in which these networks facilitate innovation. In this context, new modes/practices of innovations are identified through the diverse and dynamic relationships emerging between architects, digital tools/systems, the design artefact, and the various multi-disciplinary knowledge/actors in a socio-technical setting.

summary The paper presents current research into architectural potentials of robotic fabrication in wood construction based on elastically bent timber sheets with robotically fabricated finger joints. Current developments in computational design and digital fabrication propose an integrative design approach contrary to classical, hierarchical architectural design processes. Architecture related fields, such as material science, engineering and fabrication have been seen as separate disciplines in a linear design process since the Industrialization era. However, current research in computational design reveals the potentials of their integration and interconnection for the development of material-oriented and performance-based architectural design.In the first part, the paper discusses the potentials of robotic fabrication based on its extended design space. The robot’s high degree of kinematic freedom opens up the possibility of developing complex and highly performative mono-material connections for wood plate structures. In the second part, the integration of material behavior is presented. Through the development of robotically fabricated, curved finger joints, that interlock elastically bent plywood sheets, a bending-active construction system is being developed (Figure 1,Figure 2). summary Computers have profoundly changed the way architects work. Computer science is nowadays recognized as one of the fundamental sciences that must be taught in architecture. Unfortunately, computer science is usually taught just like Physics or Probability Theory, without really preparing the students for the tremendous impact that it will have in architecture in the near future. In this paper we analyze that impact and we discuss some of the approaches that are currently being used for teaching computer science in architecture. Our main contribution is a proposal for teaching computer science in architecture using the principles of functional programming and, particularly, higher-order programming, while avoiding being dependent of specific CAD tools. We claim that this approach gives the student the ability to think, design, and explore designs more effectively than using previous approaches. We validate our claims using data from our own teaching experience during the last five years.
