summary Living organisms have evolved effective structural solutions in response to the inherent constraints of their respective environments through a process of morphological adaptation. Given the fact that the majority of natural load bearing materials are fibrous composites, the authors suggest the analysis of appropriate biological role models as a promising strategy for informing the application of fibre reinforced polymers (FRP) in architecture. In this paper the authors present a biomimetic design methodology for seamless large-scale FRP structures involving the analysis of the exoskeletons of Arthropoda with regards to structural performance criteria, the development of a custom robotic filament winding process, and the translation of biological and fabricational principles into the architectural domain through physical prototyping and the development of custom digital tools. The resulting performative material system is evaluated in a full-scale research pavilion.

It explores new workflow for accessible feedback into the early design of façade systems. Specifically, this research aims to explore the level of corroboration or the gap between predictions of thermal behavior using digital modeling and simulation, and the empirical measurement of thermal behavior in physical analog models for façade design.

summary The increasing use of building performance simulation in architectural design enriches digital models and derived prototyping geometries with performance data that makes them analytically powerful artefacts serving sustainable design. In our class “Parametric Design”, students perform concurrent thermal and daylight optimization during the architectural ideation process, employing digital simulation tools, and also utilize rapid prototyping techniques to produce process artefacts and whole-building analysis models with climate-based day-light metrics physically embedded. Simulation metrics are merged with prototyping geometries to be output on a colour-capable Zprinter; the resultant hybrid artefacts simultaneously allow three-dimensional formal as well as whole-year daylight performance evaluation, rendering analysis scope four-dimensional. They embody a specific epistemological type that we compare to other model instances and posit to be an example of multivalent representation, a formal class that aids knowledge accretion in  workflows and allows designers to gain a physically reframed understanding of geometry-performance relationships.

summary The BIM software (Building Information Modeling) enables a holistic model -a complete description of the model-building for a complete analysis and validation prior to build, as well as the plotting of final design in architecture and its subsequent maintenance. Users can extend virtually unlimited capabilities. For this reason we have chosen a BIM with programmability by the user to create a calculation module to validate, the heat transfer and possible condensation on both walls and ceilings. The Revit Architecture BIM was chosen using the API (application programming interface) in C#. In this paper, we analyze the experience gained and the results achieved. The objective is to create a calculation and graphing module thermal transmission and condensation.

summary The idea of ‘city’ has now surpassed its physical concept. The emergence of the Internet and the growing development of information and communication technologies (ICT) have changed the behaviour of our society in the past decade and revolutionised the traditional ways of representing space. The classic 2D (floor plans, sections and elevations) and 3D representations have been gradually replaced by 3D digital models that can reproduce buildings and places in a virtual environment.3D digital models are tools that enable a wide range of applications in urban planning and management, especially in architectural and data documentation where they allow the analysis of theoretical scenarios such as: 1) representation of the past, considering the procedures needed to restore the heritage; 2) visualisation of the present, to enable dissemination and communication of the city as it is; and, 3) simulation of the future, with the model being used to visualise and experiment with architectural objects, even those at a design stage. The main contribution of this work is to present an urban application developed into a GeoBIM tool, ESRI City Engine Software (CE), that integrates GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and BIM (Building Information Modelling) concepts. Finally, to enhance its potential, three spatial analyses were conducted.

This situation decreases the building quality as the Federal Government, who founds the program, demands very low costs, so it is even more complicate to achieve quality enhancement. To solve this situation, many regulations have been instituted and, in 2013, ABNT published NBR 15575, a regulation regarding housing building performance, including aspects such as thermal, acoustic and maintenance performance. summary The project investigates responsive building skin systems that adapt to the dynamic environmental conditions to regulate the internal conditions in a habitable space over different periods of time by exhibiting a state of motion and dynamism. Heat and Light are the primary parameters for regulation, leading to energy efficiency and dynamic spatial effects. Passive and active skins using shape memory alloys and pneumatic actuators are developed through investigations of smart systems that integrate smart materials and smart geometries. The precedents in this domain have rarely dealt with individually controlled multiple parameters of heat and light in a single system, which is attempted in this project. Owing to the complexity of the multi-parametric system, genetic algorithms are developed for system optimization and calibrated with physical prototypes at varied scales. The developed systems are tested against two distinct climatic models- New Delhi and Barcelona, and evaluated for performance, based on heat and light, which are quantified as solar gain and illuminance as principles, and daylight factor for evaluation purpose. The use of genetic algorithms makes the problem solving faster and accurate. New tool-sets are developed in the process by combining various digital tools, to create a real-time feedback and memory loop system.

summary The use of solar energy in buildings requires defining proper systems according to different urban typologies. This paper presents a strategy for assessment in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and a parametric analysis of an detached housing typology in Building Information Modeling (BIM), which demonstrates an integrated approach to estimate solar energy potential, applied to the context of Concepción, Chile. Residential areas are identified with different energy consumption and solar capture in roofs, walls or outside space recorded in a urban GIS, and checks the architectural implementation of a roofing system in residential buildings through an integrated evaluation and design in BIM.

summary In urban planning exploration and analysis assist the generation, measurement, interpretation and management of the modelled urban environments. This frequently involves categorisation of model elements and identification of element types. Such designation of elements can be achieved through attribution (e.g. ‘tagging’ or ‘layering’) or direct selection by model users. However, for large, complex models the number and arrangement of elements makes these approaches impractical in terms of time/effort and accuracy. This is particularly true of models which include substantial numbers of elements representing existing urban fabric, rather than only newly generated elements (which might be automatically attributed during the generation process). We present methods for identification and categorisation of model elements in models of existing and proposed urban agglomerations. We also suggest how these methods can enable exploration of models, discovery of identities and relationships not otherwise obvious, and acquisition of insights to the models’ structure and contents which are not captured, and may even be obscured, by manual selection or automated pre-attribution.

summary On behalf of the BBR (German Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning) the development of an Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) based inspection tool was accomplished as application on an underlying work-in-progress development framework. By providing a machine-based checking process the tool ModelCheck was rolled out to meet demands emerged during pilot projecting. Thus it is capable of processing automated compliance checks on quality criteria for the authorities, e.g. documentation guidelines of BBR regarding building and real estate documentation or building information modeling (BIM) quality criteria formed for the Humboldt-Forum project – a BIM pilot-project managed by BBR. ModelCheck supports checks on IFC models - formal against schemes and logical inspection with regards to alpha-numeric content by using xml-based configurable rules.

summary In order to understand the applicability of multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) to the building design process, a MDO framework, titled Evolutionary Energy Performance Feedback for Design (EEPFD), along with the prototype tool, H.D.S. Beagle, were developed to support designers with the incorporation of partially automated performance feedback during the early stages of design. This paper presents 2 experimental case studies, one from the design profession and the other from a design studio, that evaluate the applicability and impact of EEPFD on the early stage design process. Through these two case studies two different interaction and automation approaches for applying EEPFD are explored as part of the framework validation. Observed benefits, challenges and suggestions of EEPFD’s implementation are then presented and discussed.

summary The main goal of the project is to generate a framework for a knowledge-based-methodology (KBM) within a parametric software. This is accomplished through a combination of the design software and robot simulation with real-time assessment based on a process-flow-diagram (PFD) structure that compiles the main environmental parameters of the manufacture process. The intention is to create a methodology to directly report the impact of the manufacture of a specific design, from the materials embodied energy to the energy consumption of each step. This framework provides valuable information which may monitor the developer towards alterations to increase the CAD/CAM performance. In the context of this paper, this methodology was applied in the conceptual design and manufacture of a housing structural insulated panel prototype using parametric design software and robotic equipment. The purpose is to generate a quasi-automated design process linked with real-time analysis and assessment of the fabrication process, offering real time environmental and cost analysis of a panelized structure house manufacture logic. The suggested methodology outputs information to compare and optimize the manufacture outline, and supports the screening and assortment of appropriate tool paths or combination of fabrication tools based on environmental/cost data, user-specified requirements and context characteristics.

title Transformative Solar Panels: A Multidisciplinary Approach

summary This paper focuses on the applications of geometrically transformable and expandable structures with deployed "energy production" mode and retracted "wind shedding" mode to replace the fixed photovoltaic (PV) panels and racking systems currently used in buildings rooftop installations. The significance of this expandable geometric system relies on its embedded motion grammar, i.e. rotation and translation transformations, in the system. The research draws inspiration from reconfiguration of compound tree leaves in nature, and addresses issues of redesign and modeling challenges that led to digital fabrication of the prototype. Finally, the research studies the development of a multidisciplinary research from the distributed cognition point of view, and emphasizes on the role of an iterative creation, sharing and reflection method for the development of a common ground for a successful collaboration.

summary Governments in Australia are faced with policy implementation that mandates higher energy efficient housing (Foran, Lenzen & Dey 2005). To this effect, the National Construction Code (NCC) 2013 stipulates the minimum energy performance for residential buildings as 114MJ/m2 per annum or 6 stars on an energy rating scale. Compliance with this minimum is mandatory but there are several methods through which residential buildings can be rated to comply with the deemed to satisfy provisions outlined in the NCC. FirstRate5 is by far the most commonly used simulation software used in Victoria, Australia. Meanwhile, Building Information Modelling (BIM), using software such as ArchiCAD has gained a foothold in the industry. The energy simulation software within ArchiCAD, EcoDesigner, enables the reporting on the energy performance based on BIM elements that contain thermal information. This research is founded on a comparative study between FirstRate5 and EcoDesigner. Three building types were analysed and compared. The comparison finds significant differences between simulations, being, measured areas, thermal loads and potentially serious shortcomings within FirstRate5, that are discussed along with the future potential of a fully BIM-integrated model for energy rating certification in Victoria.

summary This ongoing investigation aims to learn from nature novel material organizations and structural systems in order to develop innovative architectural system. We developed a multidisciplinary approach, using scientific analysis and design research and prototyping. We focus on the study of a “living fossil” fish, whose armor system is so efficient it has remained almost unchanged for millions of years. We investigate its morphological characteristics, its structural properties, the assembly mechanisms and the underlying material properties in order to derive new principles to design new enhanced structural systems. We use micro computerized tomography and scanning electron microscopy to observe microstructures, parametric design to reconstruct the data into digital models and then several 3D printing technologies to prototype systems with high flexibility and adaptive capabilities, proposing new gradual material interfaces and transitions to embed performative capabilities and multifunctional potentials.

summary Building performance simulation (BPS) is the basis for informed decision-making of Net Zero Energy Buildings (NZEBs) design. This paper aims to investigate the use of building performance simulation tools as a method of informing the design decision of NZEBs. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of a simulation-based decision aid, ZEBO, on informed decision-making using sensitivity analysis. The objective is to assess the effect of ZEBO and other building performance simulation (BPS) tools on three specific outcomes: (i) knowledge and satisfaction when using simulation for NZEB design; (ii) users’ decision-making attitudes and patterns, and (iii) performance robustness based on an energy analysis. The paper utilizes three design case studies comprising a framework to test the use of BPS tools. The paper provides results that shed light on the effectiveness of sensitivity analysis as an approach for informing the design decisions of NZEBs.
