summary In a context of a slow uptake of the Building Information Modeling (BIM) methodology in the Flemish region, we present the results of an educational research project, carried out over 4 semesters, in a multi-disciplinary, cross-campus collaboration. This project fosters an improved application of BIM, information management and communication, by organizing building teams involving students from different schools.The project partners collaborated on a shared framework of supportive learning material, collaboration scenarios between teams of students and the integration of digital tools for communication, information management and collaboration in the curriculum.This article, in particular, will elaborate on one of the collaborative exercises, involving architecture and engineering students, using BIM for modeling, information exchange and model evaluation.

summary This work is a research on the application of genetic algorithms (GA) to urban growth taking into account the optimization of solar envelope and sunlight in open spaces.It was considered a typical block of a Spanish grid, which is the most common subdivision of the urban land in towns situated in Argentina. Two models are compared, one in which the growth has no more limitations than building codes. The other one, in which the growth incorporates the solar radiation as a desirable parameter.This way of parameterizing configures a bottom-up method of urban growth. No top-down decisions intervenes in the growth process.This tool proves to be useful at early stages of urban planning when decisions—which will influence along the development of the city for a long time—are taken.

title Some Notes on the Incompleteness Theorem and Shape Grammars

summary The paper presents a critique of the Shape Grammar paradigm viewed through the lens of the incompleteness theorem of Gödel. Shape Grammars have been extensively researched through many lenses. Their productive systemic nature was the focus of the first papers along with more recent treatises in the field while their use in analysis of known building styles has been extensive and a proven mechanism for style analysis. It is surprising though that use of Shape Grammars in actual design in practice however has been minimal. The architectural community has not actively used the paradigm in the design of real buildings, probably because of the rigid analytical approach to style and rules, following from the academic analysis that the paradigm has been subjected to. However I propose that there is another underlying reason, other than the rigid approach to construct a Shape Grammar. The nature of the concurrent application and creation of the rules lies close to the incompleteness theorem of Gödel, that uses a multitude of Turing Machines to prove that a from a set of True Axioms -A- we will never be able to determine if all sentences are true, without having to invent new axioms, outside the initial set -A-, thus unproven in terms of their true or false nature. Negation of this possibility drives us to the conclusion that true Design can never be feature -complete and thus can never be placed in a trusted framework that we all agree or believe it to be the complete truth.

summary On behalf of the BBR (German Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning) the development of an Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) based inspection tool was accomplished as application on an underlying work-in-progress development framework. By providing a machine-based checking process the tool ModelCheck was rolled out to meet demands emerged during pilot projecting. Thus it is capable of processing automated compliance checks on quality criteria for the authorities, e.g. documentation guidelines of BBR regarding building and real estate documentation or building information modeling (BIM) quality criteria formed for the Humboldt-Forum project – a BIM pilot-project managed by BBR. ModelCheck supports checks on IFC models - formal against schemes and logical inspection with regards to alpha-numeric content by using xml-based configurable rules.

summary Nowadays ICT tools are part of the cultural tradition of designers and over time have replaced pencil and paper in design development. The application programs for design are many and for different purposes, but the role and importance of Context often are underestimated. For new tradition, it needs “Context Knowledge Model” based on ontologies for the management of buildings and preservation and enhancement of cultural heritage with technological innovation. Context modeling gives the opportunity to address the management of pre-existing building in a conscious way. The interoperability of data and knowledge of Context is important to analyze the quality of building process. This is based on standard concepts of the project for the recovery and restoration of the buildings starting from knowledge of context. The goal of this research is to exploit information technology to advance and define knowledge of context monitoring, management and maintenance of historic buildings. The representation of context is important to understand physical, social, economic and normative Context in which the building was placed. The process used to analyze Context entities were Ontologies. This theoretical model will be applied to underground archaeological Roman sites, to implement semantic levels in IFC and BIM for building design.

summary This paper outlines generative strategies for the design of structural layout patterns of columns and beams in reinforced concrete structures based on contemporary local construction practice in China. Following an introduction to constraints and opportunities of this new potential context for generative design application, possible generative strategies are proposed and discussed, with a view to their viability within the local context. The proposed strategies are illustrated in terms of geometry, generative sequence and plausibility of construction and discussed in terms of visual and overall structural merit.

summary In current architectural practice some important changes are taking place because of the development of numerous Building Performance Simulations (BPS) tools to support design decisions during early phases of the design process. Many difficulties still persist, however, not necessarily due to the limitations of the available technology, but to the lack of appropriate methodologies to use the existing tools to improve the decision making process, particularly at the early design stages. summary This paper explores the application of a novel Multi-disciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) framework to the early stage design process, through a case study where the designer serves as the primary user and driver. MDO methods have drawn attention from the building design industry as a potential means of overcoming obstacles between design and building performance feedback to support design decision-making. However, precedents exploring MDOs in application to the building design have previously been limited to driving use by engineers or research teams,thereby leaving the incorporation of MDO into a design process by designers largely unexplored. In order to investigate whether MDO can enable the ability to design in a performance environment during the conceptual design stage, a MDO design framework entitled Evolutionary Energy-Performance Feedback for Design (EEPFD) was developed. This paper explores the designer as the primary user by conducting a case study where the application of EEPFD to a single family residential housing unit is incorporated. Through this case study EEPFD demonstrates an ability to assist the designer in identifying higher performing design options while meeting the designer’s aesthetic preferences. In addition the benefits, limitations, concerns and lessons learned in the application of EEPFD are also discussed.

summary This paper presents the results of research and development of Building Energy Simulation (BES) visualization methods. In this effort the authors used Building Information Modeling (BIM) Authoring Tools’ Application Programming Interface (API) to visualize BES results in BIM. We also used an external database to store and manage the object-based simulation results from a BES tool. Based on these methods, we created a prototype: Building Energy Performance Visualization (BEPV), which translates information from the result database to the Energy Performance Indicator (EPI) parameter in BIM. Using the prototype, when BIM models are created for building design, the building energy performance can be expressed visually as color-coding on the BIM, allowing users to see energy flows directly. The developed prototype lets architects use BIM as a common user interface for building design and performance visualization, and may improve their designs in early stages.

summary Interoperability and integration between design, analysis and fabrication in architectural practice allow building façade systems to be increasingly complex and non-standard. As customized building façade systems increase in contemporary buildings, it is important to adopt the integrated design process that aids problem solving and design-making in façade design. The primary goal of this study is to explore the integrated design process that incorporates building information modeling and parametric performance analysis tools in order to understand sustainability opportunities in sustainable façade fabrication. The integration of building information modeling (BIM) and parametric performance analysis tools poses a unique design process whose resolution has the potential to improve sustainability in built environment and façade fabrication efficiency. This paper uses an academic design research project, the Reading Pavilion located in the UNC Charlotte campus, as a case study to investigate the integrated design process of a building façade system, which was supported by quantitative data using BIM, parametric performance analysis, and rapid prototyping tools.

In this Context, the present paper proposes the programming of a Revit plug-in for verifying sound insulation of walls between environments, collecting information of the building’s model from a parameter database, calculating values of the elements’ sound reduction index and allowing to ponder constructive systems’ performance. The application aims to amplify productivity of designers and to provide greater control over technological solutions, assisting in the compliance with performance criteria.

summary Existing research which is related to spatial knowledge acquisition often shows a limited scope because of the complexity in the cognition process. Research in spatial representation such as space syntax presumes that vision drives movement. This assumption is only true under certain conditions and makes these models valid only in specific scenarios. Research in human spatial cognition field suggests that the spatial information perceived by the individual is not equal to the visual appearance of the space, a straightforward way to represent this cognition process quantitatively is lacking. Research in wayfinding usually assumes a certain degree of familiarity of the environment for the individual, which ignores the fact that the individual sequentially perceives information during wayfinding and the familiarity of the environment changes during the wayfinding process. In this paper, a conceptual spatial knowledge acquisition model for architectural space is presented based on the continuous spatial cognition framework. Three types of local architectural cues are concluded to relate common architectural elements to the continuous spatial cognition framework. With all relations in the proposed conceptual model quantitatively described, a computational model can be developed to avoid the aforementioned limitations in spatial representation models, human spatial cognition models and wayfinding models. In this way, our computational model can assist architects evaluate whether their designed space can be well perceived and understood by the users. It can help enhance the way-finding efficiency and boost the operational efficiency of many public buildings.

summary This paper describes the process of digital design and fabrication for customized building facades and effects from highly customized configurations in U.S., major manufacturing power of China, and emerging construction in Asia and South America. Case studies are presented to form comparisons of technology adoption to project workflow in these three global contexts. Although integration of digital fabrication has shown signs of success in U.S., traditional practices of limited digital information exchange are commonplace in Asia and South America. With focus on adoption of new fabrication tools, BIM and larger production capacity, the potential benefits of digital fabrication are imminent.

summary The BIM software (Building Information Modeling) enables a holistic model -a complete description of the model-building for a complete analysis and validation prior to build, as well as the plotting of final design in architecture and its subsequent maintenance. Users can extend virtually unlimited capabilities. For this reason we have chosen a BIM with programmability by the user to create a calculation module to validate, the heat transfer and possible condensation on both walls and ceilings. The Revit Architecture BIM was chosen using the API (application programming interface) in C#. In this paper, we analyze the experience gained and the results achieved. The objective is to create a calculation and graphing module thermal transmission and condensation.

summary This paper proposes a methodology that assesses in real-time the various impacts of the application of a CAD / CAM logic, to assist the designer in making objective considerations about the efficiency of a given manufacturing logic. A forecast of this nature enables the designer with the power to identify and quantify the strengths and weaknesses of a case versus others, and allows him to detect what are the configurations and processes that have potential to be optimized. The next chapters will show how the use of integration of knowledge-based-methodology (KBM) in the implementation of CAM to systematize the selection of different designs and operations, can improve the construction/fabrication practice depending on the fabrication equipment, material selection and other indicators. The adoption of the above-mentioned methodology is particularly pertinent for decision makers, since it can be deployed in a variety of different processes. It harvests information to compare and optimize the manufacture outline, and supports the screening and assortment of appropriate tool paths or combination of fabrication tools based on environmental/cost data, user-specified requirements and context characteristics.

summary The idea of ‘city’ has now surpassed its physical concept. The emergence of the Internet and the growing development of information and communication technologies (ICT) have changed the behaviour of our society in the past decade and revolutionised the traditional ways of representing space. The classic 2D (floor plans, sections and elevations) and 3D representations have been gradually replaced by 3D digital models that can reproduce buildings and places in a virtual environment.3D digital models are tools that enable a wide range of applications in urban planning and management, especially in architectural and data documentation where they allow the analysis of theoretical scenarios such as: 1) representation of the past, considering the procedures needed to restore the heritage; 2) visualisation of the present, to enable dissemination and communication of the city as it is; and, 3) simulation of the future, with the model being used to visualise and experiment with architectural objects, even those at a design stage. The main contribution of this work is to present an urban application developed into a GeoBIM tool, ESRI City Engine Software (CE), that integrates GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and BIM (Building Information Modelling) concepts. Finally, to enhance its potential, three spatial analyses were conducted.

summary This paper describes work conducted as part of an interdisciplinary research project into new approaches to using computer technology in the early phases of the architectural design process. The aim is to reduce the existing discrepancy between familiar, analogue ways of working in the early design stages and the increasingly widespread use of digital tools in office practice. Taking this as its starting point, a prototype for a design platform was developed. The core of the project is a direct, real-time connection between real volumetric models, an interactive 3D sketching-tool and interactive digital content that supports the design process. The conceptual and technical core of this connection is an integrated object recognition system. In this paper we describe the need for an integrated solution, the underlying conceptual idea and the recognition methods implemented including their respective strengths and limitations.
