summary Contemporary challenges require inclusively integrated approaches to designing. Constrained by established modes of practice, such integration is impossible without a radical commitment to openness. In response to this need, the 18th International Conference on Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA 2013) brought together contributions that engage with open systems in all aspects of architectural and urban design: open with respect to the scale of the design objectives and the context, from a building component within a building system to a neighbourhood or city within its urban and rural context; open with respect to the domains being considered, from planning to sustainable performance of a building or city; open with respect to the collaboration of disciplines and participants, from ad-hoc brainstorming to a rigorous process of consultation and feedback; open with respect to design methods and techniques, from physical modelling to digital prototyping; open with respect to design models and representations being adopted, from a parametric exploration to an ontological delineation considering Building Information Modelling, Built Environment Modelling or City Information Modelling; open with respect to the tools and applications being adopted, despite interoperability issues, from modelling to simulation and assessment; open with respect to the learning approach being adopted, from informal interaction and sharing to formal design education; open with respect to the open source approach being adopted in research and development, in order to gather community involvement and use. The conference was held 15-18 May 2013 at the Department of Architecture, School of Design and Environment, at National University of Singapore.By focusing on the theme of Open Systems, CAADRIA 2013 aimed to explore all these aspects and more, and raise awareness to the need of breaching disciplinary boundaries and reaching creative communities at all levels of expertise, by pooling resources, knowledge and practices, and integrating them through the adoption of open systems.

summary This paper discusses a course that addresses the integration between generative design and digital fabrication in the context of reconfiguring architectural space. The objective of the course, offered for 3rd year architecture students at the Department of Architecture, Ain Shams University, Egypt, was to design and fabricate interior design elements to be installed within the department lobby. Students worked in digital and physical environments to develop 8 group projects that featured concepts of shape grammars, L-systems, fractals and cellular automata. The potential of the realized projects is discussed in terms of 3D development of systems, contextual generative design, and pedagogical objectives.

summary Although commonly considered problematic within the wider range of standardized isotropic construction materials, wood’s mechanical deficiencies are simultaneously an asset for the adventurous designer. These anisotropic and organic characteristics can be critically investigated, even exaggerated, with the possibility of productively yielding a complex and adaptive building material.Given wood’s fibrous make-up, as derived from its ecological function as an evaporative capillary system, wood as a material is predisposed to react to environmental and contextual fluctuations—moisture in particular. As a consequence of its cellular and chemical anatomy, wood—unlike other standard construction materials—will morphologically react to changes in moisture. This reactivity is derived from interactions such as rehydration and swelling at the cellular level which accumulate to induce formal transformations at the macro level. This responsiveness, when coupled with the affordances of industrial standardization, reframes wood within architecture as a reactive material capable of consistent transformation well-suited to parametric definition within computational modeling.

title Digital ontology and the architectural monstrous

summary This paper aims to connect a reading of Francisco Goya’s painting Vuelo de Brujo with Marco Frascari’s metaphorical exploration of the idea of ‘monstrosity’ in architecture in Monsters of Architecture (1991). It also seeks to connect these works to contemporary forms of digital monstrosity and the proposition that the existential anxiety explored within current digital representations of the monstrous have both their basis in the technical apparatus within which they are created, and current thinking on material realism in ontology. Given the emergence of complex forms of ‘life’ within Cellular Automata studies and the speculations regarding digital ontology stemming from Stephen Wolfram’s New Kind of Science, the paper also asks what the consequences of large-scale expansions of these capabilities will entail in a post-Singularity scenario.

summary Architectural discourse has recently suggested a new material practice derived from advances in the field of synthetic biology. As biological organisms can now be designed and engineered for specific purposes, it is expected that, in the near future, it will be possible to program even more complex biologically based systems. One potential application is to literally grow buildings by programming cellular organisms to fabricate and deposit material into architecturally relevant patterns. Our current design methods do not anticipate the potentially challenging material practice involved in a biologically engineered architecture, where there is a loose and emergent relationship between design and material articulation. To tackle this conflict, we developed SynthMorph, a form-finding computational tool based on basic biological morphogenetic principles. A reflection is offered on its use, discussing the effect of multicellular morphogenesis on the production of shape. We conclude that such a strategy is an adaptive design method in two ways: (a) the mechanics of design using morphological constraints involve a practice of dynamic and continuous negotiation between a design intent and material emergence, and (b) the proposed design strategy hints at the production of a biologically produced architecture, which would potentially behave as an adaptive organism.

summary Cellular automata (CA) is a well-known computation method introduced by John von Neumann and Stanislaw Ulam in the 1940s. Since then, it has been studied in various fields such as computer science, biology, physics, chemistry, and art. The Classic CA algorithm is a calculation of a grid of cells' binary states based on neighboring cells and a set of rules. With the variation of these parameters, the CA algorithm has evolved into alternative versions such as 3D CA, Multiple neighborhood CA, Multiple rules CA, and Stochastic CA (Url-1). As a rule-based generative algorithm, CA has been used as a bottom-up design approach in the architectural design process in the search for form (Frazer,1995; Dinçer et al., 2014), in simulating the displacement of individuals in space, and in revealing complex relations at the urban scale (Güzelci, 2013). There are implementations of CA tools in 3D design software for designers as additional scripts or plug-ins. However, these often have limited ability to create customized CA algorithms by the designer. This study aims to create a customizable framework for 3D CA algorithms to be used in 3D form explorations by designers. Grasshopper3D, which is a visual scripting environment in Rhinoceros 3D, is used to implement the framework. The main difference between this work and the current Grasshopper3D plug-ins for CA simulation is the customizability and the real-time control of the framework. The parameters that allow the CA algorithm to be customized are; the initial state of the 3D grid, neighborhood conditions, cell states and rules. CA algorithms are created for each customizable parameter using the framework. Those algorithms are evaluated based on the ability to generate form. A voxel-based approach is used to generate geometry from the points created by the 3D cellular automata. In future, forms generated using this framework can be used as a form generating tool for digital environments.

summary Automata based modeling of urban environments focuseson the bottom up emergence of particular phenomena through interactions at the disaggregated level. Two popular approachesare Cellular Automata (CA) for modelling fixed automata and Agent Based Modelling (ABM) for modelling mobile automata.However, certain urban phenomena cannot easily be modelled by either CA or ABM alone. This research focuses on one suchphenomenon, referred to as leap-frog development, which is a discontinuous and dispersed type of urban growth. A hybridautomata model is proposed for modelling such phenomena that combines both CA and ABM into a single integrated model. Theproposed model is demonstrated by applying it to a case-study in Dhaka city for simulating the growth of informalsettlements associated with the readymade garment industry.

summary In this era, Architectural Design Practice is faced with a paradigm shift in its conventional approaches towards computational methods. In this regard, it is considered a pedagogic challenge to boost up knowledge and skills of architectural students’ towards an advanced approach of architectural design that emphasizes the potentials and complexity of computational environments and parametric tools for design problem solving. For introducing the concept of Parametric Oriented Design Methods to 3rd year level architectural students, an experimental pedagogic course was designed in the scholastic year of 2012-2013 at German Jordanian University GJU (School of Architecture and Built Environment SABE) to approach this concept. In the preparation phase, the experimental course was designed to incorporate structured instructing and training method to be consecutively performed within experimental lab environment to target predetermined learning outcomes and goals. The involved students were intentionally classified into three levels of previous involvement associated with the related software operating skills and computational design exposure. In the implementation phase, the predetermined instructing and training procedures were performed in the controlled environment according to the planned tasks and time intervals. Preceded tactics were prepared to be executed to resolve various anticipated complication. In this phase also, students’ performance and comprehension capacity were observed and recorded. In data analysis phase, the observed results were verified and correlations were recognized. In the final phase, conclusions were established and recommendations for further related pedagogic experiments were introduced.

summary In this paper we explore the concept and design guidelines for an Autonomous Learning Oriented Proto System (ALOPS), a construction system designed to enhance its own performance through time. Our research has been focused on the fabrication of a prototype for a porous wall system which reacts to light intensities by closing or opening its apertures. Taking that aim, we used a combination of robotics, programing, and material behaviour to endow the system with the capacity to record reactions towards encountered sets of conditions during its active energy periods, allowing the system to use this knowledge database to evolve autonomously by feeding this information back into the computation process. This approach in construction systems opens up the architectural design processes to address the creation of digital memory structures rather than complex algorithms in order to operate specific functions. With this development, the architect could think of architectures constantly evolving by learning from their environments as well as of users forming symbiotic and behavioural bonds with the emergent spatial personalities, thus affecting the underpinning relationships between architecture, user and context.

summary Representational media – analogue, physical, digital, or virtual – are employed by students in the conception, development and presentation. In 2013 a survey at two architectural schools was conducted to study the current representational media use in design studios. The survey examined the role digital and physical media play in students’ design work and how students use the various media to generate and communicate their designs. This study presents its importance through the shift in architectural education whereby digital tools are not taught per se any longer, however expected to be mastered throughout the course. Yet students’ learning experiences are strongly dependant on the successful acquisition of skills and its transfer to deep learning. Especially architectural design studios build upon the premises that rerepresentation leads to a better acquisition of knowledge. Architectural educators may use the study to revisit their studio and reposition the role of media as well as align learning outcomes, deliverables and communication tools with the actual working- and learning-styles of students.

summary In the context of the growing usefulness of computation within architecture, structures face the potential for being conceived of as intelligent entities capable of resilient, adaptive behavior.Building on this idea, this work explores the use of machine learning for structures that may learn to autonomously “stand up”. The hypothesis is that a neural network with genetically optimized weights would be capable of teaching lightweight, flexible, and unanchored structures to self-rectify after falling, through their interactions with their environment. The experiment devises a physical and a simulated prototype. The machine-learning algorithm is implemented on the virtual model in a three-dimensional physics environment, and a solution emerges after a number of tests. The learned behavior is transferred to the physical prototype to test its performance in reality. This method succeeds in allowing the physical prototype to stand up. The findings of this process may have useful implications for developing embodied dynamic structures that are enabled with adaptive behavior.

summary This paper is the result of a research project started in 2007 in our architecture school which aimed to adopt a Blended-Learning approach in teaching CAAD to 3rd year architecture students, while integrating the knowledge produced by our R&D Unit on architectural representation and communication techniques and web applications. We present our main conclusions regarding this strategy’s results and the web applications involved to understand if they acted like catalysts for engaging students with their learning process and for promoting a better communication between them and their teachers. The article shows how this strategy created new forms of interaction making communication between teachers and students easier and giving the latter an active role in the learning process. We start with an introduction to CAAD’s pedagogical strategy; we then describe the strategy and model applied to several case studies and the materials and learning tools used. Finally, we’ll discuss the most significant results and draw the main conclusions. The results highlight how the learning process coming from the Blended-Learning strategy and the use of complementary web applications strengthens the student’s and teacher’s capacity to work in a close relationship while maintaining the student’s active role in the learning process.

summary We present learning experiences related to Textile Design in postdigital environments, linked to disrupted practices from Design Thinking perspective, with the intention to translate it into sustainable didactic strategies. Methodologically from the workshop, we develop design and graphic’s databases from textiles and digital printing methods, different media’s applications, prototyping and identity simulation of their own business, which includes branding, communication pieces and packaging. We recognize innovative and meaningful responses from students regarding exploration, idea’s generation and prototype’s creation. As teachers, like craftsmen, we have tried to link material culture, tacit knowledge, resistances, social interaction and production methods.

summary We recognize creative and innovative actions in interventions from Product’s Industrial Design, from the entire perspective of Design Thinking and interacting in post digital interconnected environments. Following this framework, we present teaching practices trying to adhere to disruptive didactic practices. Specifically, we have made redesign and design __interventions linking 3D models, graphics supports and prototyping. In this task, addressing working methods of solving the projective workshop’s own problems, we had used applications of 3D NURBs modelers and meshes, hyperrealists renders and image processing. The teaching experience results, with creative responses from student’s collaborative actions, have invited to established and solved unique problems in innovative ways. We consider to have developed a fruitful and meaningful experience.

summary This paper examines the application of innovative and interdisciplinary collaboration methods that emerged from the rapidly developing field of information technology and its intersection within the realm of design and architecture. These events, also referred to as hackathons, have risen in popularity in recent years (Artiles & Wallace, 2013) and stem from a design response for the increasing demand for accelerated design decisions within the field of architecture. This paper examines the potential of hackathons as a platform for rapid development of design ideas into prototypes within a time constraint of 24 hours. The paper explores the hackathon as a robust foundational element for pedagogical approaches rooted in interdisciplinary collaboration. Using a case-study research methodology, this paper probes the framework of the event, the outcomes, and the lessons learned. As this paper demonstrates, the hackathon required participants to identify and explore shifting territories through interdisciplinary teamwork to arrive at innovative solutions. In this setting, the format of the hackathon serves as a vibrant territory that enables a concrete theoretical contribution to design pedagogy, CAAD education, and collaborative professional practice.

summary Students engage in Social Networks (SN) as a form of interaction with friends and tutors, as news or learning resource, to make their voices heard or to listen to other views and many more. Online SN work in close association with offline SN to form a blended social environment that greatly enables and enhances students’ learning. Some Schools of Architecture have struggled or failed to engage in the potential of SNor their respective University’s online Learning Management Systems (LMS). Despite efforts to facilitate blended learning environments or to engage students in problem-based learning activities architectural education often fails to tap into the rich resources that online social learning environments offers through their collective and social intelligence of its users. This paper proposes a framework for SN architectural education that provides opportunities for linking the academic LMS with private or professional SN such that it enhances the learning experience and deepens the knowledge of the students. The paper proposes ways of utilising SN supported learning environments in other areas of the curriculum and concludes with directions of how this framework can be employed in professional settings.

summary Gulou is a type of building found in ethnic Dong people’s settlements in south west China. It plays a significant role in the traditional Dong architecture and shows both social and technical values. In the near future the technique as an intangible culture heritage would face the risk of extinction because of globalization. The paper argues that the use of formal grammar and computer tools could help the preservation and learning of the design knowledge of Gulou Structure and develop Gulou designs which would be adapted to modern needs. A shape grammar called Gulou Structure Grammar (GSG) and its computer implementation are made to achieve the goals of capturing the design knowledge of Gulou structure, generating new Gulou designs and promoting the education of Gulou building techniques.

summary Computer-based tools have changed the focus and modes of design thinking in architecture. While often criticized for its overemphasis on formal expressions and its pursuit of the spectacular, digital creativity has begun to take into account a multiplicity of design factors that define architecture. These factors relate to performance simulation and analysis, constructability, and Building Information Modelling (BIM). This paper discusses the use of physical and digital mock-ups in the context of building technology courses. It uses these mock-ups as an important vehicle that provides students with a feedback mechanism regarding often digitally idealized creative thinking.

summary Shape-memory polymers (SMPs) are an emerging class of “smart materials” that have dual-shape capability. They are able to undergo significant deformation when exposed to an external stimulus such as heat or light. SMPs have been widely investigated within the biomedicine and aerospace industries; however, their potential has yet to be explored within an architectural framework. The research presented in this paper begins an investigation into the morphological behavior ofSMPs toward a deployable, adaptive architecture. The structure’s ease of assembly, compact storage, transportability and configurable properties offer promising applications in emergency and disaster relief shelters, lightweight recreational structures and a variety of other applications in the temporary construction and aerospace industry. This paper explores the use of SMPs through the development of a dynamic actuator that links a series of interconnected panels creating overall form to a self-standing structure. The shape-shifting behavior of the SMP allows the dynamic actuator to become flexible when storage and transportability are required. Alternatively, when exposed to the appropriate temperature range, the actuator is capable of returning to its memorized state for on-site deployment. Through a series ofprototypes, this paper will provide a fundamental understanding of the SMP’s thermo-mechanicalproperties toward deployable, adaptive architecture.
