title Projeto Design Condensado: Definição de ‘Modelo Sociocultural’ para Sistemas de Visualização Dinâmica de Dados que Estimulem a Geração de Novos Conhecimentos sobre a História do Design [Condensed Design Project: The Definition of a ‘Social-cultural Model’ for Dynamic Data Visualization Systems Which StimulateKnowledge Building in Design History]
source SIGraDi 2013 [Proceedings of the 17th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISBN: 978-956-7051-86-1] Chile - Valparaíso 20 - 22 November 2013, pp. 143 - 147
summary The ‘Condensed Design Project’ aims to discuss and reflect on how the definition of an ‘activity inducer’, by describing and characterizing ‘social-cultural models’, can be used in the development of dynamic data visualization systems. The aim is to discuss and try to understand how the profile of the ‘activity inducer’, routines, scenario and context impact the navigation, interaction, research and learning processes in design history. Thus, the knowledge building process is strictly conditioned to the way the relation between the ‘visualization system’ and the ‘activity inducer’ is promoted, considering the technological limitations and the individual’s predisposition.

title Uma Arqueologia de Diagramas Cibernéticos [An Archaeology of Cybernetic Diagrams]
source SIGraDi 2013 [Proceedings of the 17th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISBN: 978-956-7051-86-1] Chile - Valparaíso 20 - 22 November 2013, pp. 353 - 356
summary This paper investigates the use of explicit structures of information in architectural design. Particularly, it approaches the use of diagrams related to cybernetics and information theory in experimental practices in the 1960’s and 1970’s. It analyses the diagram of cybernetic control proposed by the cybernetician Gordon Pask for the Fun Palace, the diagrams produced by the utopian architect Yona Friedman in the conceptual description of the Flatwriter program and Christopher Alexander’s diagrams and his theories of Synthesis of Form and Pattern Language. Finally it establishes a brief parallel between current domestication and use of dataflow programming with the cybernetic diagrams, highlighting differences in their complexity approach.

title Processos de Projeto Cibersemióticos: Procedimentos de Observação, Representação e Performance Aplicados ao Design Paramétrico [Cybersemiotic Design Processes: Observation, Representation and Performance Proceedings Applied on Parametric Design]
source SIGraDi 2013 [Proceedings of the 17th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISBN: 978-956-7051-86-1] Chile - Valparaíso 20 - 22 November 2013, pp. 258 - 261
summary The abstract presented here is part of a PhD research in progress, currently developed at USP - University of São Paulo, with the Nomads.usp research group, under the guidance of Professor Anja Pratschke. This research starts from the assumption that Cybersemiotics, initially defined by the Philosopher and Information Scientist Dr. Søren Brier - and therefore gathers concepts of Second Order Cybernetics and Semiotics of Charles Sanders Peirce - while meta-theory designed and developed to promote transdisciplinarity, can bring other perspectives and base updated reflections in order to produce a framework for architectural design processes that make use of digital mediation, especially Parametric Design.

title Abstract Styles in the Vienna Workshop: A Formalist Analysis of Josef Hoffman’s Two Designs
source SIGraDi 2013 [Proceedings of the 17th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISBN: 978-956-7051-86-1] Chile - Valparaíso 20 - 22 November 2013, pp. 197 - 201
summary A shape grammar formalism is elaborated for the Vienna Workshop (Wiener Werkstaette) designer Josef Hoffmann’s two designs. Early instances of abstract expressionism are traced in Hoffman’s works by investigating stylistic parallels through shape rules and computations. The analysis of Hoffmann’s two works are carried out in parallel to Terry Knight’s analysis of De Stijl artists Georges Vantongerloo and Fritz Glarner paintings with the normal form grammars.

doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2013.2.165
source Stouffs, Rudi and Sariyildiz, Sevil (eds.), Computation and Performance – Proceedings of the 31st eCAADe Conference – Volume 2, Faculty of Architecture, Delft University of Technology, Delft, The Netherlands, 18-20 September 2013, pp. 165-174
summary Agent-based systems have been widely investigated in simulation and modeling. In this paper, it is proposed that agent-based systems can also be developed as generative systems, in which different aspects of performative design can be defined as separate drivers in a proper computational framework. In this manner constrained generating procedures (CGP’s) are studied to integrate the discrete design processes into one system. Subsequently, this generative agent-based design tool is accompanied with generating and constraining mechanism which are informed by material characteristics and fabrication constraints, bringing to the forefront emergent complexity.

summary This paper discusses the evolution of an interface used to introduce eletronics in the foundation design course at the School of Architecture at Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil. The use of this interface by the students triggers the discussion of the possibilities of new technologies in architecture and initiates a tactical learning process in which the students are responsible for the very content they are learning. This interface introduces the discussion of interactivity and indeterminism, crucial to the development of the two main works of the course: an individual interactive object and an urban interactive intervention in group.

summary Architecture and Technology’s relationship nowadays has arrived to multi-disciplinary practices; they are growing exponentially while keeping away from to architectural discourse, are remarkable for its expressive power and the ability to solve complex problems. This opens the possibility for the generation of the organic, a path discarded by the Modern Movement in the past. Our approach explores three active premises called Morphogenetic Meta-Patterns: discrete processes (systemic guidelines) for the development of performance-based generative systems. These processes arise from Generative Design and their associated paradigms in the creation of a Framework between architecture and related disciplines.

summary In this paper, we present preliminary specifications for a computer design tool for the application of mass customization in middle class apartment design in Brazil. Believing that in the digital era, network communication and digital design tools combined may create a design environment that considers consumer needs and preferences, we present a simple drafting of a computer tool that makes use of those concepts. And therefore we believe to contribute for the future construction of a design system that redefines problem scenarios, rather than providing individual solutions, repositioning architects and clients in the design process.

summary We present and discuss a didactic for augmenting architectural design education with computational design techniques via integrative feedback loops and show examples of student projects. Our goal is to embed new technical skills into existing design abilities as quickly as possible, in order to enable our students to exploit and explore the extended capabilities of digital design techniques within the framework of architectural design projects. We instigate a process of continuous mutual feedback between different fields: on the one hand between technique-based exercises and design-related steps, and on the other hand between the digital and the physical. Through oscillation and feedback, the newly learned skills are directly interwoven with the existing ones. Special emphasis is put on the illuminative effects of transitions between different media and on issues of fabrication.

title Identificação de Geometrias Implícitas na Arquitetura a Partir de Realidade Aumentada [Alignment Identification of Implicit Geometries in Architecture from Augmented Reality]
source SIGraDi 2013 [Proceedings of the 17th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISBN: 978-956-7051-86-1] Chile - Valparaíso 20 - 22 November 2013, pp. 44 - 48
summary For the initial stages of architectural training one of the strategies traditionally used is to study design cases. This exercise can help in the comprehension of implicit geometries and design processes. The use of the golden ratio, for example, is recurrent in the history of architecture. However, adequate instruments are necessary for this kind of statement. This paper demonstrates the use of Augmented Reality with this goal: virtual elements are viewed overlaying the architecture or its representation, configuring a “digital proportion measurer”. The comprehension of known architectural practices assists in structuring methods and constructing repertoires for architectural design.
