summary This ongoing investigation aims to learn from nature novel material organizations and structural systems in order to develop innovative architectural system. We developed a multidisciplinary approach, using scientific analysis and design research and prototyping. We focus on the study of a “living fossil” fish, whose armor system is so efficient it has remained almost unchanged for millions of years. We investigate its morphological characteristics, its structural properties, the assembly mechanisms and the underlying material properties in order to derive new principles to design new enhanced structural systems. We use micro computerized tomography and scanning electron microscopy to observe microstructures, parametric design to reconstruct the data into digital models and then several 3D printing technologies to prototype systems with high flexibility and adaptive capabilities, proposing new gradual material interfaces and transitions to embed performative capabilities and multifunctional potentials.

summary Programming, often called scripting, has become a key feature in most CAD systems and an equally key area of expertise in CAD. However, programming surrenders many of the benefits of direct manipulation and introduces notational elements that are cognitively distant from the designs being created. In addition, it creates barriers to use and is often perceived as being too difficult to apply. We introduce Programming In the Model (PIM) through a prototype, implementing live side-by-side views, multi-view brushing and highlighting, live scripting, auto- translating from modeling operations to script and localized relational information within model windows. A qualitative user study confirms PIM’s features and raises issues for future development. A key result is the need for multi-directional extreme liveness , that is, maintaining consistency of action across views at the smallest possible scale. We argue that PIM principles are applicable in textual and visual programming alike.

summary Urban design is a complex process which deals with multitude of aspects to shape quality urban space. On one hand, we have quantitative aspects such as land use, building heights or floor space index which are tackled on top-down approach. On the other hand, we need to take into consideration more subjective, qualitative aspects such as building shapes and space between them based on bottom-up principle.In order to connect both principles, a new, performance-based parametric urban design method is proposed. It is based on a concept of parametric maps, which represent spatial distribution of key building parameters (quantitative criteria, top-down) throughout the area and are preliminary loaded into the virtual urban development area. Once parametric maps are loaded, we begin designing a development by placing the buildings (qualitative criteria, bottom-up), which adapt their parameters while changing their locations. Parametric maps thus represent a link between a set of spatial parameters and the actual shape of each building in a way, which connects both, top-down and bottom-up principles of urban design into a single conceptual framework.In order to evaluate this new method, an interactive prototype application has been developed in Maya (3D modeling software) and the following results were obtained: 1.) a significant speedup is possible in the creation of different design alternatives in early stage of urban design process; 2.) use of parametric maps is most suitable for mid- to large-scale projects (+15 buildings), while they can be redundant for small-scale areas; 3.) possibility of inconsistency with site regulations is diminished.

title Tree-Structure Canopy:A Case Study in Design and Fabrication of Complex Steel Structures using Digital Tools

summary This paper describes and reflects on the design and manufacturing process of the Tree-Structure canopy for the WestendGate Tower in Frankfurt upon Main, completed early 2011.The project investigated fabrication and assembly principles of complex steel structures as well as the integration of contemporary computational design, engineering, optimization and simulation techniques in a collaborative design approach. This paper focuses on the notion of modular standardization as opposed to non standard customized components. It also engages with issues relating to digital production tools and their impact on construction cost, material performance and tolerances. In addition it examines the reconfiguration of liability during a planning and construction process, an aspect which can be strongly determined by fabrication companies rather than the architect or designer.This paper is written as a reflection on the complete building process when contemporary digital tools are used from design through to fabrication. It studies both the generation of the steel structure as well the ETFE cushion skin. It reports on a collaborative project, where the main author was responsible for the canopies design, parameterization, digitalization and fabrication, as well as for the dissemination of the outcomes and findings during the design and realization process.As such it represents an example of research through design in a contemporary and evolving field.The canopy received a design award by the Hellenic Architecture Association.

summary This research explains the development process of a design tool that can construct complex surface geometries using only two-dimensional plan drawings. The intention behind this tool is to address certain complex behavior of surface geometries such as hydrological characteristics. This paper briefly explains the historic and mathematic description of surface data structures, according to Cayley, Maxwell and Morse. This is followed by a brief introduction of the surface network/critical graph extraction technique in GIS. Additionally, the algorithm of contour extraction from asimple critical graph to reconstruct a surface is explained. In the final section the lessons learnedfrom the previous sections are used to develop algorithms for a tool which uses only plan drawings to construct complex surfaces. Three algorithms are explained in the final section among which the third one is considered to be the most complete and promising approach. Therefore,some design examples are presented to show the flexibility of the tool. At the end, this paper provides suggestions and discussions to reflect further ideas in order to improve the tool in future.

It will speculate that the technical accumulation of expertise and knowledge in this crafty technique could be implemented algorithmically. This robust and efficient process could provide solutions for architectural design problems. It will conclude that faceting, as we can observe it in jewelry making and lamp design, produces facets that are not just reacting to an underlying geometry, but also add expression and articulation to an object.

summary We present and discuss a didactic for augmenting architectural design education with computational design techniques via integrative feedback loops and show examples of student projects. Our goal is to embed new technical skills into existing design abilities as quickly as possible, in order to enable our students to exploit and explore the extended capabilities of digital design techniques within the framework of architectural design projects. We instigate a process of continuous mutual feedback between different fields: on the one hand between technique-based exercises and design-related steps, and on the other hand between the digital and the physical. Through oscillation and feedback, the newly learned skills are directly interwoven with the existing ones. Special emphasis is put on the illuminative effects of transitions between different media and on issues of fabrication.

summary Hyper-Morphology is an on-going research outlining a bottom-up evolutionary design process based on autonomous cellular building components. The research interfaces critical operational traits of the natural world (Evolutionary Development Biology, Embryology and Cellular Differentiation) with Evolutionary Computational techniques driven design methodologies. In the Hyper-Morphology research, genetic sequences are considered as sets of locally coded relational associations between multiple factors such as the amount of components, material based constraints, and geometric adaptation/degrees of freedom based adaptation abilities etc, which are embedded autonomously within each HyperCell component. Collective intelligence driven decision-making processes are intrinsic to the Hyper-Morphology logic for intelligently operating with autonomous componential systems (akin to swarm systems). This subsequently results in user and activity centric global morphology generation in real-time. Practically, the Hyper-Morphology research focuses on a 24/7 economy loop wherein real-time adaptive spatial usage interfaces with contemporary culture of flexible living within spatial constraints in a rapidly urbanizing world.

summary The paper presents a model-based methodology to support multidisciplinary collaboration for the application of photovoltaic systems to buildings. It focuses on the representation of domain specific knowledge necessary for the design of novel PV racking and mounting structures, based on principles of multi-functionality and functional integration. The proposed representation is based on a language for modeling functional requirements in terms of causal behaviors. These behavioral models provide common ground not only for multidisciplinary design, but also for the elaboration of performance metrics and verification procedures for evaluation of design alternatives. summary To broaden the understanding of what has been studied on the topic of microinteractions in human-computer interaction, this article conducts an exploratory study to survey the scientific production in articles and dissertations that work with the microinteractions framework, by Saffer (2013), applied to the scope of the user experience. As a method, a systematic literature review is proposed. For this, the following scientific bases are used: Scopus Elsevier, Capes Periodicals, EBSCO and Proquest. From the perspective of design and human-computer interaction, the quantity and approaches used are investigated. Of the 731 scientific works found, 14 were filtered and selected to compose the panorama of scientific research in microinteractions. The article brings the main approaches used in microinteractions research that focus on user experience in the last decade and points out perspectives on how to investigate microinteractions in future academic research.

summary Based on our current daily rate, 85,410 hours is the average amount of time that an adult in the United States will spend on their phone in a lifetime (Howarth 2023). This is time spent texting, tweeting, emailing, snapping, chatting, posting, and interacting with an interface which each of us carry in our pocket. Kelly Dobson explains, “We psychologically view the cell phone as an extension of our bodies, which is why when you accidentally forget it or leave it behind you feel you have lost apart of yourself” (2013). In reality, this device is just one of many technologies which affect our relationship with our bodies and the physical world. Additionally, Zoom meetings, social media networks, on-line shopping, and delivery robots, all increasingly detach our bodies and our senses from our everyday experiences and interactions. In response to digital culture, Liam Young writes, “Perhaps the day will come when we turn off our target ads, navigational prompts, Tinder match notifications, and status updates to find a world stripped bare, where nothing is left but scaffolds and screens” (2015). Make no mistake; the collection of projects shared in these field notes is intended to be a counterpoint to such a prophesied future. However, the intent is not to try to compete with technology, but rather, to consider the built environment itself as an interface, encouraging interaction through feedback and responsivity directly related to human factors, finding ways to re-engage the body through design.

summary Aggregate Architectures challenge the common notion of architectural structures as being immutable, permanent and controllable. Aggregate Architectures are understood as material systems consisting of large masses of granules—designed or natural—interacting with each other only through loose, frictional contact. As a consequence, they take the realm of structural stability and architectural planning into entire re-configurability and into merely probable predictions of their prospective behavior. This renders them relevant within the paradigm of Adaptive Architecture.The challenge to the designer is to move away from thinking in terms of clearly defined local and global assembly systems and to acquire tools and modes of design that allow for observation and interaction with the evolving granular architectures. In this context, the focus of the presented researchproject is on the relevance of mathematically based simulations as tools of investigation and design.The paper introduces the field of Aggregate Architectures. Consequently experimental and simulation methods for granulates will be outlined and compared. Different modeling and collision-detection methods for non-convex particles are shown and applied in benchmarking simulations for a full-scale architectural prototype. The potential for micro-mechanical simulation analysis within architectural applications are demonstrated and further areas of research outlined.

summary Biomimicry, where nature is emulated as a basis for design, is a growing area of research in the fields of architecture and engineering. The widespread and practical application of biomimicry as a design approach remains however largely unrealized. A growing body of international research identifies various obstacles to the employment of biomimicry as an architectural design method. One barrier of particular note is the lack of a clear definition and methodology of the various approaches to biomimicry that designers can initially employ. This paper attempts to link biological principles with computational design in order to present a design methodology that aids interested architects within the preliminary design phase.

summary Peripheral devices like smart phones offer an opportunity to lower the barrier to spontaneous collection and sharing of information during distributed collaboration. We have completed development of guidelines and a framework that focuses on peripheral devices in collaboration. In order to explore the design space generated by our principles, we conducted a role-playing experiment about commissioning a building, in which an “on-site” team and a “design” team were expected to find and resolve discrepancies between requirements, design documents, and the actual site. The teams were given Styrofoam panels to act as pretend smart peripherals to invoke play and help probe the design space. We found that “reflection on action” (debriefing and subsequent brainstorming) was fruitful for ideation and theorem building about interaction, but “reflection in action” failed. Yet, reflection in action, particularly with such probes, is important to capture the “mechanics of collaboration”. Therefore, we are considering adapting improvisational theatre to our study of distributed collaboration.
