summary In relation to cities, wind is one of the less studied meteorological parameter. Constant vertical rate variations from meso scale to micro scale, altogether with strenght, direction, velocity of the urban canyon, makes the wind a complex subject of study. To achieve this, a methodological strategy that addresses the wind's multi dimensionality was raised. It was aplied to Punta Arenas, the southernmost city in the world, where most of the time winds come 90% from the same direction with speeds reaching 128 km/h. Wind's constant directional behavior allows the recognition of areodynamic phenomena produced, in the first instance, for the wind profiles influenced by the urban rugosity and then, at morphologycal level, the aerodynamic behavior of the layered fluids over the building bodies, generating a regular pattern between solids and fluids. The strong winds in cities with cold climate influence the use of public spaces, which, not being designed under this conditions, do not develop proper levels of thermal comfort.

summary Spatial design is becoming an increasingly social, participatory and inclusive practice. In the last decade, ordinary people all around the world have started to claim a shaping power over the processes of urbanization; over the ways in which our cities are made and remade (Harvey, 2013). There has been a resurgence in the number of do-it-yourself cooperatives initiated by non-designer citizens, activists, artists and designers. In parallel to these developments, a plethora of social technologies, tools and platforms have been developed to include a variety of stakeholders in the architectural design, urban design, planning and decision-making processes. Crowdsourcing and crowdfunding applications started to be widely used to tap into the wisdom of the crowd. Novel developments in parametric design and digital fabrication created possibilities for user participation in the making of customized and highly diversified products. With the combination of artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, smart buildings, autonomous devices, robots and software started to transform into agents and active participants. The attempts to harness collective human and artificial intelligence opened up new avenues for combining practice, research and education. On the other hand, there is a growing concern over the possible negative impact of the digital devices, tools, platforms and agents integrated in the making of our buildings and cities, public, private and collective spaces. Examples of those are the potential exclusion of vulnerable and disadvantaged citizens, transfer of citizen power to the corporations, privatization of personal life and data, as well as spatial exclusion through increased technological control and surveillance.

title Understanding and interpreting urban space (in)formation

summary This paper introduces a novel approach to understanding the complex information and logics of urban spaces by the non-professional public. A model for Interpretation of Qualities in Urban Space (aMIQUS) is proposed. The objectives are threefold: first, to form common, valid and applicable measures to assess features of space design; second, to indicate the developmental trait that considerably affect users' spatial experience which - taken as a consequence - derives from either sustainable/prudent or poor design decisions; and third, to generically recreate and visually represent urban spaces for communicative purposes. The model represents an identification method, not a problem-solving mechanism and is intended as a pragmatic instrument for recognizing crucial information, narrative, embedded in spatial scene. Model is followed by the initial idea to extend it in terms of an educational digital interface for the general public, participating in the process of urban decision-making. The paper concisely summarizes both theoretical and applicative efforts.

summary The present research discusses the importance of human activity as a place-making coordinate, and proposes the Activity Counter Maps (ACM) as a methodology for visualizing people’s social spaces. Through two case studies, the ACM were tested for creating representations of both intensity of occupation in public spaces and people’s public distances combined into a unified “three-dimensional public shape”.  The research analyses the resulted images and discusses its possible applications for digital design.

summary The paper describes the implementation of “immersive simulation studios” at Ball State University and their impact on architectural design education. This implementation is part of our on-going research efforts aimed to expand conventionally available digital design tools by including state-of-the-art virtual reality (VR) technology in design studios. Two consecutive immersive simulation studios were held during the academic year 2013-2014; we tested teaching/learning methodologies for effectively using the VR simulation to support the students in the design of architectural spaces. The results make reference to the learning outcomes from these implementations and the level of satisfaction of students using the tool.

summary The aim of this paper is to design a public facilitie using both digital manufacture and rapid prototyping design methods. These new technologies have been used in product design development by some ways: helping in the comprehension of complex geometries; used as tools for analyzing the design process, thus avoiding errors in the project. The analysis were carried out using virtual simulation tests and physical prototype in reduced scale. The prototype was manufactured using the 3D printer V-Flash in the Virtual Design Laboratory – UFRGS, where positive and negatives aspects were identified and described.

summary This research project explores the Arduino potentialities, as a performer and mediator between individuals and their environment. Our goal is to generate spaces to modify that environment through an interface that dialogues with stimuli and actions.Our interest is to connect vulnerable individuals to possible acts of appropriation that is, being able to perform a symbolic ownership of their environments. For doing that, we see the opportunity of using Arduino within the context of differential pedagogy for children with special needs. All this, considering the evident deficiencies of that kind of educational facilities, particularly regarding children with motor disabilities daily activities.

summary Media façades grant infinitely many faces to a building and can change the architectural meaning of what a façade is. They can also help to transform the face of the building into an over-size communication device for public (Borras, 2010). Contemporary media façades mostly rely on the content of their screens, and only a small number of them physicality of the screen itself. Precedent building façades that incorporate moving componentsareunable to function as displays. In this paper we present a media façade design, titled“Tran[s]quillity”, in which we fuse reconfigurable building com-ponents with display technologies to achieve a unique design. As well as fulfilling the function of a regular media wall -as a crisp screen- we imagine Tran[s]quillity as a transformable kinetic sculpture that can act as a screen of physical depth to introduce greater functionality and interactivity.

We propose a device, that broadcasts the contents of the hashtag: #quetenemoshoy, making it more popular, and in everyone's range. We set out a collaboration situation, with a concrete proposal, that includes dialogue with its surroundings. title FluidScape: Research in Parametric Concrete Formwork

summary Given the piecemeal nature of concrete formwork, the phenomenon of the monolithic result relies on elegant detailing, material choice, and formal continuity. Creating complex form out of concrete poses an intriguing problem, where these disparate constructive elements must be dynamic and flexible. This paper describes the design process from conception to prototyping for a public spray park competition project. The challenges inherent in the proposed forms included subtle reveals and ledges for water to flow down. Achieving the desired finish for the concrete requires a precise, digitally-generated form, particular materials and fabrication sequence. The project design and fabrication gives parametric control to Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) fabrication tools for an output of fluid form.

summary This paper documents and critically reflects upon the design, development, fabrication, and implementation of three pavilion projects developed during 2013-14. The core investigation of this work is the production of architectural spaces characterized by a quality of enveloping, diffuse, visual and spatial atmospheres. The principal activity of the research is aimed at refining methods for software-based exploration of formal complexities and the subsequent need to control variability and efficiency in fabrication output, using Grasshopper for Rhino to develop customized definitions particular to each specific project scenario. Linking the projects together are issues of scale, resolution of effect, and intent to move from disparate assemblies of structure and skin toward composite, manifold construction techniques that address multiple concerns (gravity, bracing, affect, etc) with a minimum of assembly. A material palette common to the current vernacular of CNC-based projects such as plywood, plastics, and other sheet materials is utilised. This work is invested in extending the possibilities of the architect and architecture as a discipline, extrapolating the workflow from these successive projects to the speculative impact of the work upon emerging possibilities of architectural construction and craft.

summary This paper presents reflections stemmed from a research that seeks to cast a gaze toward the diversity of ways of living in communities, starting from the interaction in communicational processes structured by digital means. This paper introduces findings on the possibilities of similarities between people of different groups in a community in hybrid instances, starting from cultural activities. Further explorations about the potential and qualifications of the use of digital media for this purpose will also be presented. The trials that comprise the object of reflection in this article took place and were only achievable for being part of a larger public policy project, funded by an important Brazilian research funding agency. The project has been in development since March 2010 by the research group of a recognized leading university and involves post-doctoral, doctoral and master researchers. Additionally, the project has partnership with various third sector institutions such as NGOs and collectives, as well as music bands and European universities.

summary This paper presents a discussion about the ephemeral architecture, the insertion of the Digital Fabrication in the design process and its contribution to the transformation of these spaces. The paper presents an experience of the use of this technology in the production of some Businesses Fairs. In the case reported, the Digital Fabrication allowed greater freedom in the generation of form, facilitating the visualization of the project as a whole and consequently aiding in the compatibility, anticipating possible failures before fabrication and assembly.

summary Immersive virtual reality allows us to experience the space even before it’s constructed. In this way, the use of such an environment plays a decisive role in the design process in architecture. The spaces that architects design may now be evaluated in a real scale mode which enable the understanding of problems and/or opportunities that space bring to the buildings. The goal of this paper is to define the methodological framework for using an immersive virtual environment, namely CaveH, in an Architectural design process by exploring the use of real-time rendering. We intend that the developed software and infrastructure will be used in a very easy way as a valid design tool to any professional. Two 3d models were experiment along this research each one of them regarding to a different type of design problem.

summary Expanded Polystyrene foam (EPS) is a chemically inert and 100% recyclable material that is lightweight and has a good compression strength per weight ratio; however, its current construction use is mostly limited to insulation or landfill. The key concept of this paper is to develop an EPS composite to create an ultra-lightweight long-span sustainable roofing structure by integrating the minimum necessary structural tension layer with a certified fire protection system. The authors present this concept in the following four steps, 1) EPS composite structural specimen test, 2) structural optimisation of the reversed displacement model, 3) discretisation with developable surfaces and 4) CNC hotwire rapid prototyping and assembly in scaled prototypes. The Cloud Arch is an economical, material-efficient, thermally insulated, quickly assembled ultra-lightweight construction that eliminates the need for formworks for long-span structures. It can be applied to many types of column-free spaces, such as in factories, gymnasiums, markets and cafeterias.

summary Previous research dealt with the problem of successfully approaching the combination of multiple, marginally compatible, historical and other forms of digital abstract data. The initial challenge, from a designer’s point of view, was to define and create the database for the Museum of the City of Volos (MuCiV) that will contain these seemingly incompatible data to a formulation collaborated with a geo-referenced information visualization system. This paper aims to go a step further by defining and implementing such an information visualization system. Thus, visual structures digitally representing a variety of non-spatial data, as well as the ways that these structures can interact, are investigated. It is argued that the results of this research can have interesting implementations to the museum program; by organizing in alternative ways its content and context and by facilitating the dissemination of information to the public through interactive multimodal exhibits.

summary This paper presents an interdisciplinary work done at the Museum Oteiza near Pamplona, Spain during 2012 and 2013. The main goal is the use of low cost devices that allows natural interaction, Virtual and Augmented Realities to get the general public closer to the works and concepts of Oteiza through interactive serious games. The most difficult Oteiza’s concepts to understand are those related with the empty space or with time & space. We propose three different activities, shaped as serious game, that use the whole body to interact and play with these concepts. The result is a facility that has been installed at the entrance of the Museum and that can be used for free, before or after a visit to the museum. These activities were presented to 4 experts in Oteiza and the results are discussed. In addition, we gathered more comments after several groups of children tried the application in the museum.

summary In its ambitions, the paper aims to propose a proof of concept for a Virtual, Augmented and Mixed (VAM) environment that digitally overlays a multifaith space in order to optimize their use, essentially transforming itself to the spiritual needs of the user. In order to do so, a mixed reality experience was developed by investigating and interpreting both the tangible and intangible rituals of prayer. By incorporating an immersive experience, the project promotes the idea of a multifaith space that moves beyond the notion of an "empty white room (Crompton, 2013, p.487)". To develop an immersive experience that caters to people of all religions or no religion is beyond the scope of this project. Hence, by creating a VAM environment for users of the Muslim faith the project may be able to support design ideologies for others, furthering research in this field.
