summary The research presented further is part of the Digital Alberti research project, which aims to determine the influence of Alberti’s treatise on Architecture, De re aedificatoria, on the Portuguese Renaissance architecture, through the use of a computational framework. One of the project tasks entailed the translation of the treatise’s textual descriptions concerning the morphological, proportional and algorithmic principles of the sacred buildings into a shape grammar. Subsequently a computational model was developed, in order to proceed to the derivation of examples of the same language. This article discusses the use of analytical shape grammars to undertake an architectural analysis, as well as the fact of the source of this grammar and correspondent architectural language to be a text instead of a set of buildings and designs. It reviews the methodology to implement the shape grammar and describes the several stages of development, following the interpretation of treatise into a consistent set of shape rules, by defining their spatial relations, parameters and conditions. It also reviews the implementation of this knowledge into a generative parametric computer program through visual programming language Grasshopper.

summary This paper presents a research on the use of shape grammars as an analytical tool in the history of architecture. It evolves within a broader project called Digital Alberti, whose goal is to determine the influence of De re aedificatoria treatise on Portuguese Renaissance architecture, making use of a computational framework (Krüger et al., 2011).Previous work was concerned with the development of a shape grammar for generating sacred buildings according to the rules textually described in the treatise. This work describes the transformation of the treatise grammar into another grammar that can also account for the generation of Alberti’s built work.

summary This article shows the result of generating a 3d model of Loggia Rucellai in Florence using a shape grammar from Leon Batista Alberti’s treatise De Re Aedificatoria and it is a test bed for further generations of buildings using Alberti’s rules. It shows the accuracy of such grammar to help tracing the degree of influence of Alberti’s treatise in Renaissence Portuguese architecture. Rucellai palace facade ornaments and its interior loggia where used to analyze and compare the Loggia generation accuracy. A Grasshopper script is used for the automation of the rules derivation. An evaluation process is presented and its use aims to better understand the deviations between the treatise and the Loggia grammars.

summary This paper presents an analytical shape grammar to study the designs of the ornamental blocks in Frank Lloyd Wright’s Californian Textile Block Houses. The paper introduces the textile block system and expands on the design of the Millard house as a case study. The paper presents two formalistic applications of the shape grammar to generate the original block design: one as a sequential shape grammar and the other as a parallel shape grammar. Both examples are able to generate the same results; and they hint at the potential to expand the shape grammar to generate other design alternatives.

summary This paper describes a generative design approach integrating real building data in the process of developing a shape grammar. The goal is to assess to which extent it is feasible the use of a reverse engineering procedure to acquire actual building data and what kind of impact it may have on the development of a shape grammar.The paper describes the use of Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) techniques to acquire information on the São Vicente de Fora church, then the use of such information to develop the corresponding shape grammar, and finally the comparison of this grammar with the grammar of Alberti’s treatise, to determine the grammatical transformations that occurred between the two grammars.

summary A shape grammar formalism is elaborated for the Vienna Workshop (Wiener Werkstaette) designer Josef Hoffmann’s two designs. Early instances of abstract expressionism are traced in Hoffman’s works by investigating stylistic parallels through shape rules and computations. The analysis of Hoffmann’s two works are carried out in parallel to Terry Knight’s analysis of De Stijl artists Georges Vantongerloo and Fritz Glarner paintings with the normal form grammars.

summary This paper presents preliminary results from an outgoing research about the Scholarship Program on Technological Development and Innovation (PIBITI), in which we focused the potentiality of Augmented Reality (AR) application on documentation of the architectural heritage according to the UNESCO principles. We took as the object of study of the “Quarteirão dos Trapiches”, one of the historic buildings in Laranjeiras, Sergipe, Brazil, and we reconstructed it digitally with Augmented Reality and subsequently generate a QR Code information associated with this building, available on a website. In this context, this work highlight the potential application of architectural heritage documentation in AR, where discourse about the digital processing RA we use, and the association of this digital model with a history of the building. Finally, we present our conclusions on the use of RA in shareholders highlighting the advantages of three-dimensional visualization of architectural heritage, in an interactive, dynamic and low cost of deployment, pondering the importance of encouraging a policy of initiating development activities and technological innovation to digital architectural documentation.

summary Rethinking Comprehensive Design—the 19th International Conference on Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA 2014)—emphasises a cross-disciplinary context to challenge the mainstream culture of computational design in architecture. It aims to (re)explore the potential of computational design methods and technologies in architecture from a holistic perspective. The conference provides an international forum where academics and practitioners share their novel research development and reflection for defining the future of computation in architectural design. Hosted by the Department of Design, Engineering and Management at the Kyoto Institute of Technology, CAADRIA 2014 presents 88 peer-reviewed full papers from all over the world. These high-quality research papers are complimented by 34 short work-in-progress papers submitted for the poster session of the conference. The conference proceedings were produced by a motivated team of volunteers from the CAADRIA community through an extensive collaboration. The 88 full papers rigorously double-blind reviewed by the dedicated International Review Committee (consisting of 74 experts), testify to CAADRIA’s highly respectable international standing. Call for abstracts sent out in July 2013 attracted 298 submissions. They were initially reviewed by the Paper Selection Committee who accepted 198 abstracts for further development. Of these, 118 full papers were eventually submitted in the final stage. Each submitted paper was then assessed by at least two members of the International Review Committee. Following the reviewers’ recommendations, 91 papers were accepted by the conference, of which 88 are included in this volume and for presentation in CAADRIA 2014. Collectively, these 88 papers define Rethinking Comprehensive Design in terms of the following research streams: Shape Studies; User Participation in Design; Human-Computer Interaction; Digital Fabrication and Construction; Computational Design Analysis; New Digital Design Concepts and Strategies; Practice-Based and Interdisciplinary Computational Design Research; Collaborative and Collective Design; Generative, Parametric and Evolutionary Design; Design Cognition and Creativity; Virtual / Augmented Reality and Interactive Environments; Computational Design Research and Education; and Theory, Philosophy and Methodology of Computational Design Research. summary The Marching Cube (MC) algorithm is a simple procedural routine for the surface representation of three- dimensional scalar fields. While much has been written of the algorithm’s efficiencies and adaptive nature within the domain of computer graphics and imaging, little has been explored within the context of architectural geometry and fabrication. This paper posits a novel implementation of the MC algorithm coupled with robotic fabrication (RF) techniques, to realise an open-ended design method that approaches mass-customisation as the unique geometric distortion of a finite set of topologically consistent families of tectonic elements.The disciplinary consequences of this and similar methods that intimately couple algorithmic design techniques with robotic fabrication are discussed. These include the re-affirmation or expansion of the role of the architect as master builder that is enabled by challenging Leon Battista Alberti’s 15th Century division between design concept and building.The method and its disciplinary potentials are illustrated through the description of an installation built by the authors for the Australian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. Clouds of Venice serves as a case study for a new integrated mode of production, one that increases the quality and number of feedback relations between design, matter and making.

summary A shape grammar was developed for analyzing the evolution of Maputo´s slums with the strategic objective of capturing the evolution of house types and understanding the social agreements behind the spatial relations of their house elementary spaces in order to reuse such rules for the purpose of rehabilitation. This paper shows preliminary results of the research and aims at developing, based on the resulting grammars, a parametric tool able to execute morphological analyses, simulations and generate improved design solutions for the qualification of Maputo´s informal settlements.

summary Gulou is a type of building found in ethnic Dong people’s settlements in south west China. It plays a significant role in the traditional Dong architecture and shows both social and technical values. In the near future the technique as an intangible culture heritage would face the risk of extinction because of globalization. The paper argues that the use of formal grammar and computer tools could help the preservation and learning of the design knowledge of Gulou Structure and develop Gulou designs which would be adapted to modern needs. A shape grammar called Gulou Structure Grammar (GSG) and its computer implementation are made to achieve the goals of capturing the design knowledge of Gulou structure, generating new Gulou designs and promoting the education of Gulou building techniques.

summary Visual rules are powerful in loosely capturing the impact of material behavior on form in designer’s hands-on experimentation. They present a first step to translate the causal relations between material and form to computation without sacrificing the uncertainties in the designer’s interaction with the materials. This study investigates how to model the relation between material and form with visual rules so that the model embodies some of the phenomenological aspects of reality, rather than merely reproducing it.

summary This paper investigates the use of explicit structures of information in architectural design. Particularly, it approaches the use of diagrams related to cybernetics and information theory in experimental practices in the 1960’s and 1970’s. It analyses the diagram of cybernetic control proposed by the cybernetician Gordon Pask for the Fun Palace, the diagrams produced by the utopian architect Yona Friedman in the conceptual description of the Flatwriter program and Christopher Alexander’s diagrams and his theories of Synthesis of Form and Pattern Language. Finally it establishes a brief parallel between current domestication and use of dataflow programming with the cybernetic diagrams, highlighting differences in their complexity approach.

summary The Garifuna are a group of people that live on the northern coast of Honduras and the coast of Belize. They have a very distinct and vibrant culture. Minority cultures are currently absorbed by mainstreamed cultures and the Garifuna ethnicity is directly influenced by this phenomenon. In this research it is of special concern to encapsulate Garifuna vernacular architecture by means of shape grammars. The research provides a clear documentation of the grammars implemented in Grasshopper, as well as discusses about the issues of embedding shape grammars in the Rhino/Grasshopper environment.

The development of a building involves management of the diverse goals of a heterogeneous group of agents using no more than the discrete resources of a given setting. These variables can often conflict and result in rigid normative frameworks that can limit the capacity of a designer to respond with accuracy to diverse environmental factors. The main aim of this paper is to present the theoretical foundations of an evolutionary system to assist the customization of architecture under such prescribed design conditions.

summary In relation to cities, wind is one of the less studied meteorological parameter. Constant vertical rate variations from meso scale to micro scale, altogether with strenght, direction, velocity of the urban canyon, makes the wind a complex subject of study. To achieve this, a methodological strategy that addresses the wind's multi dimensionality was raised. It was aplied to Punta Arenas, the southernmost city in the world, where most of the time winds come 90% from the same direction with speeds reaching 128 km/h. Wind's constant directional behavior allows the recognition of areodynamic phenomena produced, in the first instance, for the wind profiles influenced by the urban rugosity and then, at morphologycal level, the aerodynamic behavior of the layered fluids over the building bodies, generating a regular pattern between solids and fluids. The strong winds in cities with cold climate influence the use of public spaces, which, not being designed under this conditions, do not develop proper levels of thermal comfort.

summary The nature of the architectural design process can be described along the lines of the following representational devices: the plan and the model. Plans can be considered one of the oldest methods to represent spatial and aesthetic information in an abstract, 2D space. However, to be used in the design process of 3D architectural solutions, these representations are inherently limited by the loss of rich information that occurs when compressing the three-dimensional world into a two-dimensional representation. During the first Digital Turn (Carpo 2013), the sheer amount and availability of models increased dramatically, as it became viable to create vast amounts of model variations to explore project alternatives among a much larger range of different physical and creative dimensions. 3D models show how the design object appears in real life, and can include a wider array of object information that is more easily understandable by nonexperts, as exemplified in techniques such as building information modeling and parametric modeling. Therefore, the ground condition of this paper considers that the inherent nature of architectural design and sensibility lies in the negotiation of 3D space coupled with the organization of voids and spatial components resulting in spatial sequences based on programmatic relationships, resulting in an assemblage (DeLanda 2016). These conditions constitute objects representing a material culture (the built environment) embedded in a symbolic and aesthetic culture (DeLanda 2016) that is created by the designer and captures their sensibilities.

summary The notion of a generative description of architectural typology is discussed. Two different approaches are identified and contrasted in terms of their expressive power in design.
