summary Knowledge based design is acquired through one's exposure to a large number of projects and establishes a set of patterns regarding organizations, techniques, procedures, heuristics, priorities and preferences. Over time, designers develop a distinctive set of principles that represent their own individual methods of addressing design problems. Creative designers not only design the solutions, they also design the problems. Although their repertoire of resources includes explicit declarations regarding recognizable problem types, physical components, design rules, or evaluation methods of different aspects, design decisions are also driven by vast amounts of tacit considerations derived from professional experience. Designers make such decisions balancing design intent and technical requirements in a very efficient and synthetic manner. We designers know what we do, but it is not so clear how we do it. This conference is an invitation to engage in a dialogue concerning how Design Knowledge can be represented and manipulated within digital environments.

title Tree-Structure Canopy:A Case Study in Design and Fabrication of Complex Steel Structures using Digital Tools

summary This paper describes and reflects on the design and manufacturing process of the Tree-Structure canopy for the WestendGate Tower in Frankfurt upon Main, completed early 2011.The project investigated fabrication and assembly principles of complex steel structures as well as the integration of contemporary computational design, engineering, optimization and simulation techniques in a collaborative design approach. This paper focuses on the notion of modular standardization as opposed to non standard customized components. It also engages with issues relating to digital production tools and their impact on construction cost, material performance and tolerances. In addition it examines the reconfiguration of liability during a planning and construction process, an aspect which can be strongly determined by fabrication companies rather than the architect or designer.This paper is written as a reflection on the complete building process when contemporary digital tools are used from design through to fabrication. It studies both the generation of the steel structure as well the ETFE cushion skin. It reports on a collaborative project, where the main author was responsible for the canopies design, parameterization, digitalization and fabrication, as well as for the dissemination of the outcomes and findings during the design and realization process.As such it represents an example of research through design in a contemporary and evolving field.The canopy received a design award by the Hellenic Architecture Association.

summary This ongoing investigation aims to learn from nature novel material organizations and structural systems in order to develop innovative architectural system. We developed a multidisciplinary approach, using scientific analysis and design research and prototyping. We focus on the study of a “living fossil” fish, whose armor system is so efficient it has remained almost unchanged for millions of years. We investigate its morphological characteristics, its structural properties, the assembly mechanisms and the underlying material properties in order to derive new principles to design new enhanced structural systems. We use micro computerized tomography and scanning electron microscopy to observe microstructures, parametric design to reconstruct the data into digital models and then several 3D printing technologies to prototype systems with high flexibility and adaptive capabilities, proposing new gradual material interfaces and transitions to embed performative capabilities and multifunctional potentials.

summary This paper will articulate on how the intrinsic principles of gem making could be applied in architectural form finding. It will speculate that the technical accumulation of expertise and knowledge in this crafty technique could be implemented algorithmically. This robust and efficient process could provide solutions for architectural design problems. It will conclude that faceting, as we can observe it in jewelry making and lamp design, produces facets that are not just reacting to an underlying geometry, but also add expression and articulation to an object.

summary The paper argues that the tower needs to respond to its environment by changing from a closed building typology towards a heterogeneous, differentiated open system that can adapt to the changing conditions within and around it. This argument is supported by focusing on the analogies and principles of specific biological examples in order to propose computationally-generated self-organizing systems. The goal of analyzing these models is to integrate their structural and geometrical characteristics with the aim of overcoming high lateral loading conditions in towers, as well as elaborating on the existence of multi-functionality and integration throughout the subsystems of the tower. A series of computational models which abstract the biological properties and articulate them with a generative approach through the use of agent-based systems are implemented according to designated evaluation criteria.

summary This paper addresses the integration of the daylight effect during the early stages of the architectural design process. The first part presents a design assistance method that helps designers to characterize their daylight intentions and materialize them in architectural solutions. In this part, we describe the implementation of this method in a design tool, denoted DaylightGen, the implemented process and the different system components. The second part of this paper focuses on the investigation of the potential of the proposed method in design process. It was evaluated in educational design case study. This part integrates the experimentation process and his results.

summary The traditional or classical architecture of India is an interesting subject for exploration from different perspectives.Taking pavilions described in Mayamatam as a representative of the traditional or classical architecture of India and analyzing them from the viewpoint of pattern recognition and mathematics encouraging results are obtained.A pattern is seen in the development of the design of pavilions and has been coded alpha-numerically. Based on the system of development and employing computer applications software is created to design pavilions, which follow the principles of traditional architecture.This software has multiple benefits. It can be used as a teaching aid for the subject ‘history of Indian Architecture’. For architectural conservationists and heritage enthusiasts it offers itself as a tool to help in visualization and digital reconstruction. For architects it can be a means for making structures of recent times, which have the essence of traditional architecture.The aim of this paper is to highlight the methodology for preparing this software and demonstrating its output.

summary From the earliest stages of the Architectural Design Process, designers have to take a lot of design decisions mostly based on “Context”. The present research is aimed at developing a Context Knowledge Model to improve the representation of ‘Context’ for architectural design. ‘Context’ has been analysed and formalized by means of Ontologies related to the entities most frequently involved in architectural design, namely environmental, social, economic and normative entities. The development of such a model to manage ‘Context’ parameters can improve the knowledge of ‘Context’ of designers involved in a design project in order to advise them of how it affects their design solutions. Moreover, Artificial Intelligence techniques have been explored to improve its performance.

summary This study is concerned with the building thermal performance education in the context of computer application. The project contains the original script coded in Maxscript for use in Autodesk 3ds Max. The tool workflow and functionality focus on the thermal calculations connected with sculpturing manipulation of architectural volume in pre-conception project stages, when detailed project solutions are undefined. The algorithm is based on the manual methods included in the curriculum. The paper also presents a study of software analyzing thermal performance as a justification for the script vision and educational implementation. The script is rather an addition than alternative for existing software, so it does not assume any resignation from more sophisticated products.

summary In order to support an architect’s decision to evaluate and choose more efficient structural solutions in the concept design, it is necessary to establish an interactive feedback loop between structural solver and geometry modeller which would allow one to analyse a great number of solutions generated in the scripting design process. Defining a cross-disciplinary data structure as an analytical model, the communication between existing structural solver (OOFEM) and geometry modeller (Grasshopper) was established. Automation of the entire analysis process was done by the bridging tools MIDAS and Donkey, which have been developed. This paper presents the method of creation of an analytical model by Donkey, and deals with how to visualize, interpret and use the result values from the structural analysis.

title Teaching computer science for architecture - A proposal

summary Computers have profoundly changed the way architects work. Computer science is nowadays recognized as one of the fundamental sciences that must be taught in architecture. Unfortunately, computer science is usually taught just like Physics or Probability Theory, without really preparing the students for the tremendous impact that it will have in architecture in the near future. In this paper we analyze that impact and we discuss some of the approaches that are currently being used for teaching computer science in architecture. Our main contribution is a proposal for teaching computer science in architecture using the principles of functional programming and, particularly, higher-order programming, while avoiding being dependent of specific CAD tools. We claim that this approach gives the student the ability to think, design, and explore designs more effectively than using previous approaches. We validate our claims using data from our own teaching experience during the last five years.

summary The Brazilian Performance Standard (NBR 15.575/2013 – Housing Buildings – Performance) is changing the design process of residential buildings, imposing new acoustic performance criteria. In this Context, the present paper proposes the programming of a Revit plug-in for verifying sound insulation of walls between environments, collecting information of the building’s model from a parameter database, calculating values of the elements’ sound reduction index and allowing to ponder constructive systems’ performance. The application aims to amplify productivity of designers and to provide greater control over technological solutions, assisting in the compliance with performance criteria.

summary In the course of the 20th century, architectural construction has gone through intense innovation in its material, engineering and design, radically transforming the way buildings were and are conceived. Technological and industrial advances enabled and challenged architects, engineers and constructors to build increasingly complex architectural structures from concrete. Computer-Aided Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) techniques have, more recently, rejuvenated and increased the possibilities of realising ever more complex geometries. Reinforced concrete is often chosen for such structures since almost any shape can be achieve when poured into a formwork. However, designs generated with digital tools tend to have limited relation to the efficient modes of production typically used in contemporary concrete construction. A large gap has emerged between the technology in architectural design and the building industry, so that few efficient solutions exist for the production of geometrically complex structures in concrete. This paper focuses on the capabilities and efficiency of existing casting techniques both with static and dynamic formwork which, when combined with digital fabrication, allow innovative fabrication approaches to be taken. Particular focus is placed on slipforming, an approved and efficient construction technique, which until now is unexplored in conjunction with digital fabrication.

summary Programming, often called scripting, has become a key feature in most CAD systems and an equally key area of expertise in CAD. However, programming surrenders many of the benefits of direct manipulation and introduces notational elements that are cognitively distant from the designs being created. In addition, it creates barriers to use and is often perceived as being too difficult to apply. We introduce Programming In the Model (PIM) through a prototype, implementing live side-by-side views, multi-view brushing and highlighting, live scripting, auto- translating from modeling operations to script and localized relational information within model windows. A qualitative user study confirms PIM’s features and raises issues for future development. A key result is the need for multi-directional extreme liveness , that is, maintaining consistency of action across views at the smallest possible scale. We argue that PIM principles are applicable in textual and visual programming alike.

summary In this paper we present final results of interface design processes developed regarding a low-tech-oriented procedures supported by computer vision and physical computing techniques. All the prototypes presented were developed in academic context in a few workshops grounded in interdisciplinary approaches between art, design and architecture. There were applied artistic creative processes such as improvisation, reprograming and post-production in the development of innovative users interfaces from the perspective of re-appropriation of existent objects and its cultural nature.

summary By looking at time-tested recurrent design patterns drawn from Portuguese vernacular settlements, the present research tries to address the problem of developing sustainable urban solutions for scattered low density territories throughout Portugal. The research departs from the hypothesis that Portuguese vernacular settlements contain morphological characteristics that can be captured and reused in new designs: this may be particularly useful for rethinking extensive suburban territories’ densification conditions, in order to enhance both their consistency and sustainability. Urban sprawl and uncontrolled space consumption have often hastened the problem of territorial sustainability, that’s the reason why completing, restructuring and enhancing dispersed built environments is of paramount importance in order to foster both cultural and economical sustainability in contemporary Portugal. This project ultimately aims at contributing towards the definition of design procedures and planning tools for the re-urbanization of extensive urban fabrics. One of the major objectives is developing a decision making support tool for generating meaningful and coherent interventions in dispersed urban fabrics which could foster connectivity, integration and quality of life, by doing so this work tries to propose a novel methodology that could prove to be valuable in different contexts, even outside Portugal.

summary This paper frames walkability as a performance indicator for urban spaces and critically addresses some of the existing evaluation methods. It introduces alternative strategies and tools for enabling the collective evaluation of walkability and discusses how experiences of the citizens can possibly lead to a social construct of walkability. This discussion is elaborated by a pilot study which includes exploratory research, social-geographic web services and heat maps. Using these tools and methods, it was possible to derive various experiential and environmental spatial qualities, extract problems and identify problematic areas. From these we have learned that walkability may serve as a fruitful conversation framework and a participatory research concept. Furthermore, we were able to develop ideas for solutions to design and planning problems.

title Making Ripples: Rethinking pedagogy in the digital age

summary This essay presents a pedagogical model for beginning design that introduces digital fabrication methods through an integrated learning framework. Ripples - a wall sculpture made collectively by all second year architecture and interior design students as a joint project between studio, graphics and shop—exemplifies design practice as a collective activity. In this example, solutions emerge out of interactions among multiple stakeholders through iterative experimentation and optimization. The goal of this essay is to provoke a rethinking of the status-quo pedagogical practices in order to incorporate digital fabrication within existing curricular structures as a core skill for beginning design students, rather than merely as a technology course elected by a few students. Conclusions suggest the relevance to broader contexts of lessons learned from this modest experiment.

summary City scale projects are complex multivariable problems and have previously been addressed using a variety of organisational principles, whether it be the infrastructural grid, used by Ludwig Hilbersheimer in his project “Hochhausstadt” or the spinal organisation of the Tokyo Masterplan done by Kenzo Tange and the Metabolist Movement. This project strays from traditional methods of structuring a city and investigates a novel self-engineered anticipatory model, which focuses on the use of generative and genetic algorithms to develop a new associative system to develop coastal cities in arid climates. The system functions as a negative feedback loop, analysing existing conditions, and by a series of mathematical functions, projecting the new growth patterns for major components of a city, such as building envelopes, road networks, canal networks and public space distribution as a result of the cities internally generated resources.

summary Architectural discourse has recently suggested a new material practice derived from advances in the field of synthetic biology. As biological organisms can now be designed and engineered for specific purposes, it is expected that, in the near future, it will be possible to program even more complex biologically based systems. One potential application is to literally grow buildings by programming cellular organisms to fabricate and deposit material into architecturally relevant patterns. Our current design methods do not anticipate the potentially challenging material practice involved in a biologically engineered architecture, where there is a loose and emergent relationship between design and material articulation. To tackle this conflict, we developed SynthMorph, a form-finding computational tool based on basic biological morphogenetic principles. A reflection is offered on its use, discussing the effect of multicellular morphogenesis on the production of shape. We conclude that such a strategy is an adaptive design method in two ways: (a) the mechanics of design using morphological constraints involve a practice of dynamic and continuous negotiation between a design intent and material emergence, and (b) the proposed design strategy hints at the production of a biologically produced architecture, which would potentially behave as an adaptive organism.
