summary This paper presents preliminary results from an outgoing research about the Scholarship Program on Technological Development and Innovation (PIBITI), in which we focused the potentiality of Augmented Reality (AR) application on documentation of the architectural heritage according to the UNESCO principles. We took as the object of study of the “Quarteirão dos Trapiches”, one of the historic buildings in Laranjeiras, Sergipe, Brazil, and we reconstructed it digitally with Augmented Reality and subsequently generate a QR Code information associated with this building, available on a website. In this context, this work highlight the potential application of architectural heritage documentation in AR, where discourse about the digital processing RA we use, and the association of this digital model with a history of the building. Finally, we present our conclusions on the use of RA in shareholders highlighting the advantages of three-dimensional visualization of architectural heritage, in an interactive, dynamic and low cost of deployment, pondering the importance of encouraging a policy of initiating development activities and technological innovation to digital architectural documentation.

summary The intent of this research is to study potential improvements and optimizations in the context of robotic fabrication paired with Augmented Reality (AR), leveraging the technology in the fabrication of the individual part, as well as guiding the larger assembly process. AR applications within the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry have seen constant research and development as designers, fabricators, and contractors seek methods to reduce errors, minimize waste, and optimize efficiency to lower costs (Chi, Kang, and Wang 2013). Recent advancements have made the technology very accessible and feasible for use in the field, as demonstrated by seminal projects such as the Steampunk Pavilion in Tallinn, Estonia (Jahn, Newnham, and Berg 2022). These types of projects typically improve manual craft processes. They often provide projective guidelines, and make possible complex geometries that would otherwise be painstakingly slow to complete and require decades of artisanal experience (Jahn et al. 2019). Building upon a previously developed robotic tube bending workflow, our research implements a custom AR interface to streamline the bending process for multiple, large, complex parts with many bends, providing a pre-visualization of the expected fabrication process for safety and part-verification purposes. We demonstrate the utility of this AR overlay in the part fabrication setting and in an inadvertent, human-robot, collaborative process when parts push the fabrication method past its limits. The AR technology is also used to facilitate the assembly process of a spatial installation exploring a unique aesthetic with subtle bends, loops, knots, bundles, and weaves utilizing a rigid tube material.

summary Among other historical artifacts, architectural heritage is the most difficult to present in museums. There is a need for a high-tech visualization of cultural heritage since it is important to visualize, share and analyze data for stakeholders such as historians, archaeologists, architects and tourists. This study aims to represent architectural heritage in terms of photogrammetry and AR methods for the Parion Theater, Biga, Turkey, dates back to 1st-2nd century A.D. and has been under excavation since 2005. The study uses MULTIRAMA, a method previously developed by ARC Team (MIT) in 2013, which aims to represent the "unseen" to such users by visualising and documenting via an app. The method supports architectural heritage representation via the processes of, i) documentation, ii) data process and modeling, and iii) presentation. This holistic and low cost approach will focus on the problem of visualizing the digital architectural heritage, and led light to future projects of a historical visualization database throughout Turkey.

summary This paper presents a practical experience developed within the framework of a network of researchers dedicated to develop projects of technology transfer, training and research in the field of innovation, involving virtual reality, augmented reality and advanced interaction. The group develops visualization oriented technologies and aim to socialize the experiences developed. In this sense was created an Electronic Guide to cultural routes in southern Brazil, exploiting the contemporary concept of ubiquitous tourism, in which users access tourism content with mobile devices, using sensitivity to context, semantic web and advanced visualization, thus rescuing the memory and regional architectural heritage.

Thus, overlapping models of the buildings related to the history of the jerked beef farms, over the real environment, respond to a specific demand of the place. Most of these places do not allow access or demand a virtual reconstruction.

summary In order to achieve interactive architecture it is necessary to consider more than the technological components of sensors, controllers, and actuators. The interaction can be focused to different interaction activities: instructing, conversing, manipulating, and exploring (we propose to call this the interaction view). Additionally, the purpose of the building may range from performing, sustaining, servicing, symbolising, to entertaining (we propose to call this the world view). Combined, the interaction view and world view establish 20 different attitudes, which are flavours of behaviour for the interactive building. Through attitudes interaction profiles can be established and criteria derived for the design of interactive buildings.

summary For the initial stages of architectural training one of the strategies traditionally used is to study design cases. This exercise can help in the comprehension of implicit geometries and design processes. The use of the golden ratio, for example, is recurrent in the history of architecture. However, adequate instruments are necessary for this kind of statement. This paper demonstrates the use of Augmented Reality with this goal: virtual elements are viewed overlaying the architecture or its representation, configuring a “digital proportion measurer”. The comprehension of known architectural practices assists in structuring methods and constructing repertoires for architectural design.

summary This paper proposes an overview on the relation between representation, technology and architecture methodologies. Focusing on disposable digital tools, it reaches the new tools of virtual immersive 3D architectural environments. It also addresses the concepts of operative 3D, augmented reality and robotic manufacturing, thus introducing a system of digital tools that enables users to step inside a 3D virtual reality environment, built as a virtual building prototype, and to use all data instructions directly with the construction industry. This paper questions therefore the traditional processes and perceptions in architecture and draw present and future advanced state-of-the-arts methodologies. As a result, future and tradition in architectural design methods are challenged. Recognizing the permanent tensions between traditional and innovative processes, possible methodological changes are put in perspective, namely the fields of technical representation, building construction and design processes.

summary A design project that explores how augmented reality may be incorporated within architecture to embed hybrid ‘info-tectonic’ detail, across a range of scales is documented. The context in which the project is undertaken is the legacy of South Indian temple design. This opens up a complimentary field of research within a cultural context, to locate another agenda for augmented reality in architecture. The idea of cultural augmentation and its articulation at a range of scales, from the tactile to the urban, was generated through the design project. By way of introduction this mode of research is discussed in relation to CAAD research methods. In conclusion, a general model for cultural augmentation with augmented reality as a scalar continuum is presented.

The papers were grouped in research areas (design method, architectural theory and history, performance evaluation, human interaction, representation and process & management), emphasis (education, application, collaboration, visualization, practice and theory) and technology development stage (specification, development, application demonstration and evaluation). The period of study comprises 11 years, from 2000 to 2011. Findings for each category are described and key publications and authors are identified.

summary Rethinking Comprehensive Design—the 19th International Conference on Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA 2014)—emphasises a cross-disciplinary context to challenge the mainstream culture of computational design in architecture. It aims to (re)explore the potential of computational design methods and technologies in architecture from a holistic perspective. The conference provides an international forum where academics and practitioners share their novel research development and reflection for defining the future of computation in architectural design. Hosted by the Department of Design, Engineering and Management at the Kyoto Institute of Technology, CAADRIA 2014 presents 88 peer-reviewed full papers from all over the world. These high-quality research papers are complimented by 34 short work-in-progress papers submitted for the poster session of the conference. The conference proceedings were produced by a motivated team of volunteers from the CAADRIA community through an extensive collaboration. The 88 full papers rigorously double-blind reviewed by the dedicated International Review Committee (consisting of 74 experts), testify to CAADRIA’s highly respectable international standing. Call for abstracts sent out in July 2013 attracted 298 submissions. They were initially reviewed by the Paper Selection Committee who accepted 198 abstracts for further development. Of these, 118 full papers were eventually submitted in the final stage. Each submitted paper was then assessed by at least two members of the International Review Committee. Following the reviewers’ recommendations, 91 papers were accepted by the conference, of which 88 are included in this volume and for presentation in CAADRIA 2014. Collectively, these 88 papers define Rethinking Comprehensive Design in terms of the following research streams: Shape Studies; User Participation in Design; Human-Computer Interaction; Digital Fabrication and Construction; Computational Design Analysis; New Digital Design Concepts and Strategies; Practice-Based and Interdisciplinary Computational Design Research; Collaborative and Collective Design; Generative, Parametric and Evolutionary Design; Design Cognition and Creativity; Virtual / Augmented Reality and Interactive Environments; Computational Design Research and Education; and Theory, Philosophy and Methodology of Computational Design Research. summary This paper aims to investigate the potential of both open source software and new media (esp. computer vision and augmented reality) as tools for architectural design and education. The examples illustrated in the paper would be drawn mainly from students’ projects done as part of their AA Media Studies Course submission at the AA School of Architecture (AA) during the academic years from 2011/2012 to 2012/2013. The paper outlines the main approaches, which students have chosen to implement, both directly and indirectly, these new media and tools into their studio work at the AA. Section 1 briefly introduces a range of currently available open source computational design toolkits that are deemed useful for quick implementation of computer vision and augmented reality technologies. The related programming languages, softwares and hardwares would also be introduced and described accordingly. Sections 2 and 3 are accompanied with a visual catalogue of students’ projects to better illustrate the diversity in the understanding and implementation of computer vision and augmented reality technologies in architectural design. Section 4 serves to conclude the paper by first discussing briefly the feedback from students at the end of the course before clarifying the context of the research and thus its relation to recent work done by others using similar technologies.

summary In its ambitions, the paper aims to propose a proof of concept for a Virtual, Augmented and Mixed (VAM) environment that digitally overlays a multifaith space in order to optimize their use, essentially transforming itself to the spiritual needs of the user. In order to do so, a mixed reality experience was developed by investigating and interpreting both the tangible and intangible rituals of prayer. By incorporating an immersive experience, the project promotes the idea of a multifaith space that moves beyond the notion of an "empty white room (Crompton, 2013, p.487)". To develop an immersive experience that caters to people of all religions or no religion is beyond the scope of this project. Hence, by creating a VAM environment for users of the Muslim faith the project may be able to support design ideologies for others, furthering research in this field.

summary This work is a research on the application of genetic algorithms (GA) to urban growth taking into account the optimization of solar envelope and sunlight in open spaces.It was considered a typical block of a Spanish grid, which is the most common subdivision of the urban land in towns situated in Argentina. Two models are compared, one in which the growth has no more limitations than building codes. The other one, in which the growth incorporates the solar radiation as a desirable parameter.This way of parameterizing configures a bottom-up method of urban growth. No top-down decisions intervenes in the growth process.This tool proves to be useful at early stages of urban planning when decisions—which will influence along the development of the city for a long time—are taken.

summary The complexity of the requirements on buildings is continuously increasing and thus, often confronting designers with interdisciplinary problems, reaching far beyond the traditional challenges and methods of architecture and engineering. Moreover, designers are often required to take decisions, when most of the information and knowledge is still missing or to be generated. In the context of sustainable building design, the re-usability of building elements and the optimisation for exchangeability is crucial for the achievement of two of the main goals: efficient use of material resources and waste reduction. The scope of this work in progress is describing requirements for case-based decision support in order to optimise building element re-usability, create an analysis of explicit re-usability indicators (e.g. “connection liberation”, “modularity” or “life span collision”) and to identify retrieval strategies. A proposal to support decision making processes by retrieving existing design solutions graph representations as well as the use of building information models are also described.

summary Basic research in morphology is a relevant contribution to Industrial Design. During the last years we have been studying cutting and unfolding techniques, in particular the correspondence between cutting patterns and the different types of flexibility provided to rigid sheets through laser cutting. Different types and generative strategies have been developed and tested in their application in product design and in teaching. This paper presents three products that were originated in the knowledge produced by a research project. They are a sample of the potential of the interactions between morphology and digital technology.

summary This paper presents the design and development of a prototype, connected to a sustainable home project, which is at its final stage of implementation in Trento, N. Italy. The paper specifically focuses on the design ends and the technological means deployed in the process of implementing the prototype. Design ends outline the technical premises underpinning the development of the house systems. Technological means refer to the methods and technologies that had been deployed to satisfy the premises. Emphasis is given to the properties of the reconfigurable façade and the autonomous control system of the house, where variable transmittance materials, AI methods for building control and digital simulation are used in combination.

summary Programming, often called scripting, has become a key feature in most CAD systems and an equally key area of expertise in CAD. However, programming surrenders many of the benefits of direct manipulation and introduces notational elements that are cognitively distant from the designs being created. In addition, it creates barriers to use and is often perceived as being too difficult to apply. We introduce Programming In the Model (PIM) through a prototype, implementing live side-by-side views, multi-view brushing and highlighting, live scripting, auto- translating from modeling operations to script and localized relational information within model windows. A qualitative user study confirms PIM’s features and raises issues for future development. A key result is the need for multi-directional extreme liveness , that is, maintaining consistency of action across views at the smallest possible scale. We argue that PIM principles are applicable in textual and visual programming alike.
