summary Quality, according to Pirsig’s universal statements, does not belong to the object itself, nor to the subject itself, but to both and to their interactions. In architecture it is terribly true as we have a Building Object and Users that interact with it.The problem we approach here, renouncing at the impossible task of modelling the actor’s “libero arbitrio”, focuses on defining a set of occurrences, which dynamically happen in the built environment. If organized in a proper way, use process knowledge allows planners/designers to represent usage scenario, predicting activity inconsistencies and evaluating the building performance in terms of user experience. With the aim of improving both, the quality of buildings and the user experience, this research explores a method for linking process and product ontologies, formalized to support logic synchronization between software for planning functional activities and software for authoring design of infrastructures.

title Non-Verbal Communication in Collaborative Architectural Design
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2013.1.227
source Stouffs, Rudi and Sariyildiz, Sevil (eds.), Computation and Performance – Proceedings of the 31st eCAADe Conference – Volume 1, Faculty of Architecture, Delft University of Technology, Delft, The Netherlands, 18-20 September 2013, pp. 227-232
summary The paper introduces a novel approach to understanding the nature of visual communication within the design process in architectural education using open-source interfaces. It derives from the idea that visual non-verbal communication indicates the critical moments of the design process, where communication efficiency could be improved. The aim of this research is to evaluate how effective can non-verbal communication become in the early design phases. We will also discuss how this mode of communication works in collaborative design in architecture and how it relates verbal communication.

title A Design Method for Multicriteria Optimisation of Low Exergy Architecture
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2013.117
source Open Systems: Proceedings of the 18th International Conference on Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA 2013) / Singapore 15-18 May 2013, pp. 117-126
summary This paper proposes a design method for the exploration of holistic low exergy design strategies which factor in limitations and constraints of both passive and active systems. A design method that consists of a two loop structure is proposed. The inner loop consists of an automated workflow that includes three main components: a developmental procedure for generating design variants; evaluation procedures for evaluating design variants; and an optimisation procedure for optimising populations of design variants. The outer loop consists of a manual workflow that has two main components: a schema formulation process for defining the inputs to the automated workflow and a data analysis process for analysing the data produced by the automated workflow. A case study is presented that demonstrates the proposed method.

title Object Interaction Query: A Context Awareness Tool for Evaluating BIM Components’ Interactions
source SIGraDi 2013 [Proceedings of the 17th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISBN: 978-956-7051-86-1] Chile - Valparaíso 20 - 22 November 2013, pp. 269 - 273
summary During the creative process, designers constantly evaluate the relations between objects in space. BIM aids this process by providing a modeling platform where objects are embedded with information, which can be extracted on demand. The object Interaction Query (oIQ) proposes a novel way to query BIM models, not only for geometric properties and dimensions, but also about the relations among the components. By including the queried objects’ context and interrelations as part of the computation, the prototype tool is able to provide feedback on complex interactions and conflicts in the design environment. The oIQ approach and its implementation are developed as integral parts of the design process, allowing users to perform customized queries through a GUI in which users can apply their knowledge and design preferences to the model’s evaluation.

title A Comparative Study on Choice Modeling Framework for Evacuation Simulation
source Global Design and Local Materialization[Proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Futures / ISBN 978-3-642-38973-3] Shanghai, China, July 3-5, 2013, pp. 274-285.
summary A choice modeling framework for evacuation simulation is needed for a better understanding of the human choice behavior. Facing with the debate between bounded and full rationality, this study builds upon different frameworks and tests them on a same set of choice data collected through virtual evacuation experiment. After comparisons, it is found that there is no significant performance difference between the two kinds of rationality. Additionally, an algorithm comparing pairs of alternatives in choice process performs much better than an algorithm evaluating individual alternatives. An improved utility maximizing model framework and an overall performance decline similar as the forgeting curve are proposed. Finally, it is concluded that the proposed choice model comparing pairs with its great robustness under varying number of alternatives is a proper choice for evacuation simulation.

title Generative Improvement of Street Networks Based on Space Syntax
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2013.1.367
source Stouffs, Rudi and Sariyildiz, Sevil (eds.), Computation and Performance – Proceedings of the 31st eCAADe Conference – Volume 1, Faculty of Architecture, Delft University of Technology, Delft, The Netherlands, 18-20 September 2013, pp. 367-374
summary Space syntax is supposed to be an objective method for evaluating spatial configurations. Its contribution to a design process is dependent on the designer’s estimation. The paper describes a generative approach to finding particularly good interventions based on space syntax analyses of axial maps. More precisely, a case study was undertaken through applying such a strategy to improve and connect a segregated street network of an informal settlement to its neighbourhood. Controlling and redirecting movement in slums may cause positive effects. This research is based on and inspired by a consulting project by the company Space Syntax Limited for the Municipality of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in which the consulting company designed a regeneration program for declining informal settlements. summary As the practice of architecture grows increasingly more infatuated with verisimilitude, the technical skills required to enable a morphogenetic design process become increasingly specific and extensive. While this model is not as problematic within the realm of practice, in a pedagogical environment the time and expertise requisite for conducting and evaluating comprehensive simulation is an impediment to developing fundamental design skills and mastery of a morphogenetic process. This paper promotes an approach of simulacra; a procedural acknowledgement of an imperfect simulation that serves to advance design aptitude and critical thinking, rather than the pretention of perfection or accuracy.

title Measuring the Usability, Efficiency and Effectiveness of CAAD Tools and Applications
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2013.1.147
source Stouffs, Rudi and Sariyildiz, Sevil (eds.), Computation and Performance – Proceedings of the 31st eCAADe Conference – Volume 1, Faculty of Architecture, Delft University of Technology, Delft, The Netherlands, 18-20 September 2013, pp. 147-155
summary Computer Aided Architectural Design (CAAD) decisions and judgments have been at the heart of architectural design practice. Despite the increasing popularity of computer aided design applications, measuring the decision making of designers empirically remains elusive. Past research claiming usefulness of the CAD has relied largely on anecdotal or case studies that are vulnerable to bias. The study reviews results of prior investigations. The relatively few laboratory experiments report hardly any empirical results regarding the measurement of CAD decision making. The study provides an overview of the literature of existing measurement methods that have been used in psychology and neuroscience to assess individual variations in design making, and highlight these different measurement methods’ strengths and weaknesses. We conclude with a comparative evaluation of the different measures and provide suggestions regarding their constructive use in building realistic theories of designer’s decision making measurement.

summary In this paper, we present preliminary specifications for a computer design tool for the application of mass customization in middle class apartment design in Brazil. Believing that in the digital era, network communication and digital design tools combined may create a design environment that considers consumer needs and preferences, we present a simple drafting of a computer tool that makes use of those concepts. And therefore we believe to contribute for the future construction of a design system that redefines problem scenarios, rather than providing individual solutions, repositioning architects and clients in the design process.

source Stouffs, Rudi and Sariyildiz, Sevil (eds.), Computation and Performance – Proceedings of the 31st eCAADe Conference – Volume 1, Faculty of Architecture, Delft University of Technology, Delft, The Netherlands, 18-20 September 2013, pp. 337-346
summary Academic Libraries (ALs) design concept has been under a changing process, precipitated by both internal needs and external pressures including changes in the societal context of education, the information services and documentation storage requirements. This paper is focused on a model of form and function to assess AL’ in use, in order to explore ways for better understanding their performance. The proposed model was developed within the scope of a wider research project and makes both use of Post-Occupancy Evaluation and of Space Syntax procedures in order to explore how the spatial configuration influences the performance and use of ALs space. It considers ALs building typology as spatial, physical and social systems, by: 1) measuring users satisfaction about how well the space supports their requirements; and 2) providing information on how architecture and spatial design support - enable and generate - flows of information, communication and knowledge. The analysis provides evidence suggesting that ALs’ spatial system influences study performance, patterns of use and co-presence of its users. The results of data inputs point out prospective strategies about space intervention.

summary This article is about hybrid models, as a kind of three-dimensional representation emerged from of the possibilities of combining traditional techniques with digital technologies. The purpose is to reflect on the possibilities of production and applications of these types of hybrid models, highlighting them as recurring elements of design practice after the rise of new technologies of information and communication, and prototyping and digital manufacturing. By adopting the model as an object of research, we propose to expand the field of reflection on the incorporation of several digital technologies in the design process, specifically aspects of three-dimensional and graphical representation.

title Aerodynamic Performance Driven Form-Generation for Skyscraper Design
source Global Design and Local Materialization[Proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Futures / ISBN 978-3-642-38973-3] Shanghai, China, July 3-5, 2013, pp. 315-326.
summary I have conducted a study to explore aerodynamic performance as a driver for skyscraper design, utilizing up-to-date parametric design and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technologies readily available to architects. Previous scientific research has suggested strategies in modifying the form of skyscrapers for the purpose of improving their aerodynamic performance. I have incorporated six of such strategies into parametric design tool to produce a matrix of 60 prototypes. These prototypes are subjected to qualitative and quantitatively evaluation iterations to yield the most optimized design, with considerations given primarily to aerodynamic performance, and secondarily to structural robustness, program potential, and image attractiveness. The selected design option is further developed into a skyscraper concept. A multi-staged aerodynamic performance-driven design process is the most important result of the study. In addition, two valuable insights have been obtained: first, to inject a new inspiration into the design of skyscrapers, I have implemented the MultiDisciplinary Optimization (MDO) methodology from the aerospace industry. Second, I am able to support form-generation parametric design by quantitative evaluation process.

summary We present a design-computation method of design-to-production automation and optimization in digital fabrication; an algorithmic process minimizing material use, reducing fabrication time and improving production costs of complex architectural form. Our system compacts structural elements of variable dimensions within fixed-size sheets of stock material, revisiting a classical challenge known as the two-dimensional bin-packing problem. We demonstrate improvements in performance using our heuristic metric, an approach with potential for a wider range of architectural and engineering design-built digital fabrication applications, and discuss the challenges of constructing free-form design efficiently using operational research methodologies.

source SIGraDi 2013 [Proceedings of the 17th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISBN: 978-956-7051-86-1] Chile - Valparaíso 20 - 22 November 2013, pp. 61 - 65
summary Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), as their names imply, are models of information at different scales that usually appear segregated. Our proposal is to integrate both scales of information in a Campus Information Model (CIM). This paper focuses on the description of this integration in terms of information and knowledge models, from the point of view of landscape design. We emphasize on the description of CLIM, an interactive tabletop we have developed to support collaboration and planning of landscape, which is constructed using models of information and knowledge to perform assessments, including quantitative aspects of effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction of certain features of the Georgia Tech Campus.

source ACADIA 2023: Habits of the Anthropocene: Scarcity and Abundance in a Post-Material Economy [Volume 2: Proceedings of the 43rd Annual Conference for the Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA) ISBN 979-8-9891764-0-3]. Denver. 26-28 October 2023. edited by A. Crawford, N. Diniz, R. Beckett, J. Vanucchi, M. Swackhamer 340-349.
summary The intent of this research is to study potential improvements and optimizations in the context of robotic fabrication paired with Augmented Reality (AR), leveraging the technology in the fabrication of the individual part, as well as guiding the larger assembly process. AR applications within the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry have seen constant research and development as designers, fabricators, and contractors seek methods to reduce errors, minimize waste, and optimize efficiency to lower costs (Chi, Kang, and Wang 2013). Recent advancements have made the technology very accessible and feasible for use in the field, as demonstrated by seminal projects such as the Steampunk Pavilion in Tallinn, Estonia (Jahn, Newnham, and Berg 2022). These types of projects typically improve manual craft processes. They often provide projective guidelines, and make possible complex geometries that would otherwise be painstakingly slow to complete and require decades of artisanal experience (Jahn et al. 2019). Building upon a previously developed robotic tube bending workflow, our research implements a custom AR interface to streamline the bending process for multiple, large, complex parts with many bends, providing a pre-visualization of the expected fabrication process for safety and part-verification purposes. We demonstrate the utility of this AR overlay in the part fabrication setting and in an inadvertent, human-robot, collaborative process when parts push the fabrication method past its limits. The AR technology is also used to facilitate the assembly process of a spatial installation exploring a unique aesthetic with subtle bends, loops, knots, bundles, and weaves utilizing a rigid tube material.

summary In current architectural practice some important changes are taking place because of the development of numerous Building Performance Simulations (BPS) tools to support design decisions during early phases of the design process. Many difficulties still persist, however, not necessarily due to the limitations of the available technology, but to the lack of appropriate methodologies to use the existing tools to improve the decision making process, particularly at the early design stages. In this work we present an application of performance-based design in early design phases, with the purpose to take better-informed decisions which would ultimately contribute to improve the energy performance of buildings.

source Open Systems: Proceedings of the 18th International Conference on Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA 2013) / Singapore 15-18 May 2013, pp. 75-84
summary In this work we address the fast and economical realization of complex formwork for concrete with the advantage of robotic fabrication. Under economical realization we mean reduction of production time and material efficiency. The complex form of individual formwork parts can be in our case double curved surface or complex mesh geometry. We propose the fabrication of the formwork by straight or shaped hot wire. We illustrate different approaches to mould production, where the proposed process demonstrates itself effective. In our approach we deal with the special kinds of modularity and specific symmetry of the formwork.

summary Interoperability and integration between design, analysis and fabrication in architectural practice allow building façade systems to be increasingly complex and non-standard. As customized building façade systems increase in contemporary buildings, it is important to adopt the integrated design process that aids problem solving and design-making in façade design. The primary goal of this study is to explore the integrated design process that incorporates building information modeling and parametric performance analysis tools in order to understand sustainability opportunities in sustainable façade fabrication. The integration of building information modeling (BIM) and parametric performance analysis tools poses a unique design process whose resolution has the potential to improve sustainability in built environment and façade fabrication efficiency. This paper uses an academic design research project, the Reading Pavilion located in the UNC Charlotte campus, as a case study to investigate the integrated design process of a building façade system, which was supported by quantitative data using BIM, parametric performance analysis, and rapid prototyping tools.
