summary In a context of a slow uptake of the Building Information Modeling (BIM) methodology in the Flemish region, we present the results of an educational research project, carried out over 4 semesters, in a multi-disciplinary, cross-campus collaboration. This project fosters an improved application of BIM, information management and communication, by organizing building teams involving students from different schools.The project partners collaborated on a shared framework of supportive learning material, collaboration scenarios between teams of students and the integration of digital tools for communication, information management and collaboration in the curriculum.This article, in particular, will elaborate on one of the collaborative exercises, involving architecture and engineering students, using BIM for modeling, information exchange and model evaluation.

summary This is the second volume of the conference proceedings of the 32nd eCAADe conference, held from 10-12 September 2013 at the Department of Architecture and Built Environment, Faculty of Engineering and Environment, Northumbria University in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Both volumes together contain 130 papers that were submitted and accepted to this conference. The theme of the 32nd eCAADe conference is Fusion- data integration at its best. All quests for data integration in architecture and the construction industry lead ultimately to FUSION, a synthesis of knowledge that transcends mere combination. FUSION is the dream of a knowledge system that will enable multiple sets of data, in manifold formats, to be presented in a unified view. This conference is exploring the possibilities for advanced levels of data integration in the service of the representation and management of the natural environment, and the design, visualisation and making of the built environment. These proceedings are presenting the contributions which explore the elusive goal of FUSION in architecture and related fields. summary The paper explores innovative methods of navigation for experiencing and spatial comprehension of complex 3D digital environments. Common navigation modes of digital environments are difficult to learn and use within complex multi level digital models and often result in the viewer becoming disoriented or stuck. By drawing on concepts from computer gaming and spatial way finding this research will explore intuitive navigation systems. These systems enable the user to engage and experience the digital space much more profoundly than current CAD and BIM model viewing software. The paper demonstrates these navigation spatial cognition systems through three case studies.

summary This paper discusses the experience of the initial phase of introduction of the BIM paradigm in the undergraduate program in Architecture and Urbanism (evening course) of FAUFBA. We started from the premise that BIM should be adopted gradually and integrated with the various subjects of the course, and should be initiated through the disciplines of graphic representation. The proposal for this course is presented and practices are discussed, as they were experienced in the discipline of Computing and Design II, which deals with this paradigm. It was observed that BIM process requires significant changes, as it encountered some initial resistance from the students. However, this approach increases the understanding of building and facilitates the project documentation. Furthermore, the understanding of the scope of the paradigm was crucial to the effective use of the adopted tool.

summary On behalf of the BBR (German Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning) the development of an Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) based inspection tool was accomplished as application on an underlying work-in-progress development framework. By providing a machine-based checking process the tool ModelCheck was rolled out to meet demands emerged during pilot projecting. Thus it is capable of processing automated compliance checks on quality criteria for the authorities, e.g. documentation guidelines of BBR regarding building and real estate documentation or building information modeling (BIM) quality criteria formed for the Humboldt-Forum project – a BIM pilot-project managed by BBR. ModelCheck supports checks on IFC models - formal against schemes and logical inspection with regards to alpha-numeric content by using xml-based configurable rules.

summary This paper outlines a research project that explores the participation in, and perception of, advanced technologies in architectural professional practice through a sociotechnical lens and presents empirical research findings from an online survey distributed to employees in five large-scale architectural practices in Sydney, Australia. This argues that while the computational design paradigm might be well accepted, understood, and documented in academic research contexts, the extent and ways that computational design thinking and methods are put-into-practice has to date been less explored. In engineering and construction, technology adoption studies since the mid 1990s have measured information technology (IT) use (Howard et al. 1998; Samuelson and Björk 2013). In architecture, research has also focused on quantifying IT use (Cichocka 2017), as well as the examination of specific practices such as building information modelling (BIM) (Cardoso Llach 2017; Herr and Fischer 2017; Son et al. 2015). With the notable exceptions of Daniel Cardoso Llach (2015; 2017) and Yanni Loukissas (2012), few scholars have explored advanced technologies in architectural practice from a sociotechnical perspective. This paper argues that a sociotechnical lens can net valuable insights into advanced technology engagement to inform pedagogical approaches in architectural education as well as strategies for continuing professional development.

summary Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), as their names imply, are models of information at different scales that usually appear segregated. Our proposal is to integrate both scales of information in a Campus Information Model (CIM). This paper focuses on the description of this integration in terms of information and knowledge models, from the point of view of landscape design. We emphasize on the description of CLIM, an interactive tabletop we have developed to support collaboration and planning of landscape, which is constructed using models of information and knowledge to perform assessments, including quantitative aspects of effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction of certain features of the Georgia Tech Campus.

title Towards a Genome for Zero Carbon Retrofit of UK Housing

summary The United Kingdom has some of the worst insulated housing stock in Northern Europe. This is in part due to the age of housing in the UK, with over 90% being built before 1990 [McCrone 2017, Piddington 2020]. Moreover, 85% of current UK housing will still be in use in 2050 by which stage their Government are targeting Net Carbon Zero [Eyre 2019]. Domestic energy use accounts for around 25% of UK carbon emissions. The UK will need to retrofit 20 million dwellings in order to meet this target. If this delivery were evenly spread, it would equate to over 2,000 retrofit completions each day. Government-funded initiatives are stimulating the market, with upwards of 60,000 social housing retrofits planned for 2023, but it is clear that a system must be developed to enable the design and implementation of housing-stock improvement at a large scale.This paper charts the 20-year development of a digital approach to the design for low-carbon domestic retrofit by architects Constructive Thinking Studio Limited and thence documents the emergence of a collaborative approach to retrofit patterns on a National scale. The author has led the Research and Development stream of this practice, developing a Building Information Modelling methodology and integrated Energy Modelling techniques to optimise design for housing retrofit [Georgiadou 2019, Ben 2020], and then inform a growing palette of details and a database of validated solutions [Moorhouse 2013] that can grow and be used to predict options for future projects [D’Angelo 2022]. The data is augmented by monitoring energy and environmental performance, enabling a growing body of knowledge that can be aligned with existing big data to simulate the benefits of nationwide stock improvement. The paper outlines incremental case studies and collaborative methods pivotal in developing this work The proposed outcome of the work is a Retrofit Genome that is available at a national level.

summary The paper presents the findings of a systematic literature review of approximately 200 scientific sources. It is designed with the aim to identify the current benefits and factors of high performance in Architecture, Engineering, Construction (AEC) since the introduction of Building Information Modelling (BIM). We formed and confirmed two main propositions associating the performance of the AEC to the use of BIM. The mapping of the current impact and benefits of BIM showed that the role of the managers, suppliers, owners and authorities is underestimated, as well as the initiation and use stage of project development. At the same time, the performance in the AEC industry can be improved by an array of possibilities where IT research and policy-making authorities contribute – from establishing new collaboration protocols until improving existing or creating new BIM tools.

summary A typical architectural design project proceeds as collaboration among professionals who have different expertise, values and priorities. The collaboration is needed to make designs both rich yet feasible, but the professionally different ways of thinking can also be a block on the way of design development. This paper takes the example of the relationship between developers and architects, who tend to have different evaluation criteria, methods, and processes. A BIM-based tool, A Thousand BIM, is introduced as a means to quickly generate possible building typologies on a given project site, with computation of expected total values expressed in simple financial terms. Its aim is to help a group of heterogeneous professionals to communicate in the same language, articulate criteria and priorities in multiple perspectives, and share rapidly simulated evaluations of schematic design variations. The implemented evaluation process considers construction cost per square foot, land value, and sustainability as well as other soft design values such as views and accessibility. It can take various market data as inputs to cost calculation, and the weight to each of the design values is dynamically adjustable. A professional can explicitly set them, and share the criteria, priorities, and results of value simulations with others in an enhanced collaborative process.

The hurdles in the learning process are discussed, including the role of visualization to evaluate performance. The effectiveness on learning strategies is discussed.

summary Although we teach BIM since 2006 at the Faculty of architecture at Czech Technical University in Prague, the education has never been fully integrated into the curriculum of the school. In 2013/2014 this changed, and three tracks were initialized to integrate BIM: (1) teaching BIM in the first year; (2) applying BIM in a selected first year design studio; and (3) applying BIM in a selected third year Bachelor graduation design studio. The implementation of the work is described, results are presented, and we draw conclusions for future work.

summary This paper discusses the integration of physical and digital models in the context of building technology teaching. It showcases projects that explore the design possibilities of a chosen structural system with the use of parametric and behaviour-based computational modelling. It uses detailed mock-ups as vehicles to study, optimize, and evaluate the design as well as to provide feedback for student learning and the direction in which future designers may engage computational design. Finally, it investigates digital-to-physical design translations, the importance of which becomes more and more critical in the context of the current, computer-intensive architectural education and professional practice.

summary Rethinking Comprehensive Design—the 19th International Conference on Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA 2014)—emphasises a cross-disciplinary context to challenge the mainstream culture of computational design in architecture. It aims to (re)explore the potential of computational design methods and technologies in architecture from a holistic perspective. The conference provides an international forum where academics and practitioners share their novel research development and reflection for defining the future of computation in architectural design. Hosted by the Department of Design, Engineering and Management at the Kyoto Institute of Technology, CAADRIA 2014 presents 88 peer-reviewed full papers from all over the world. These high-quality research papers are complimented by 34 short work-in-progress papers submitted for the poster session of the conference. The conference proceedings were produced by a motivated team of volunteers from the CAADRIA community through an extensive collaboration. The 88 full papers rigorously double-blind reviewed by the dedicated International Review Committee (consisting of 74 experts), testify to CAADRIA’s highly respectable international standing. Call for abstracts sent out in July 2013 attracted 298 submissions. They were initially reviewed by the Paper Selection Committee who accepted 198 abstracts for further development. Of these, 118 full papers were eventually submitted in the final stage. Each submitted paper was then assessed by at least two members of the International Review Committee. Following the reviewers’ recommendations, 91 papers were accepted by the conference, of which 88 are included in this volume and for presentation in CAADRIA 2014. Collectively, these 88 papers define Rethinking Comprehensive Design in terms of the following research streams: Shape Studies; User Participation in Design; Human-Computer Interaction; Digital Fabrication and Construction; Computational Design Analysis; New Digital Design Concepts and Strategies; Practice-Based and Interdisciplinary Computational Design Research; Collaborative and Collective Design; Generative, Parametric and Evolutionary Design; Design Cognition and Creativity; Virtual / Augmented Reality and Interactive Environments; Computational Design Research and Education; and Theory, Philosophy and Methodology of Computational Design Research. summary The paper introduces a novel approach to understanding the nature of visual communication within the design process in architectural education using open-source interfaces. It derives from the idea that visual non-verbal communication indicates the critical moments of the design process, where communication efficiency could be improved. The aim of this research is to evaluate how effective can non-verbal communication become in the early design phases. We will also discuss how this mode of communication works in collaborative design in architecture and how it relates verbal communication.

summary This paper examines the application of innovative and interdisciplinary collaboration methods that emerged from the rapidly developing field of information technology and its intersection within the realm of design and architecture. These events, also referred to as hackathons, have risen in popularity in recent years (Artiles & Wallace, 2013) and stem from a design response for the increasing demand for accelerated design decisions within the field of architecture. This paper examines the potential of hackathons as a platform for rapid development of design ideas into prototypes within a time constraint of 24 hours. The paper explores the hackathon as a robust foundational element for pedagogical approaches rooted in interdisciplinary collaboration. Using a case-study research methodology, this paper probes the framework of the event, the outcomes, and the lessons learned. As this paper demonstrates, the hackathon required participants to identify and explore shifting territories through interdisciplinary teamwork to arrive at innovative solutions. In this setting, the format of the hackathon serves as a vibrant territory that enables a concrete theoretical contribution to design pedagogy, CAAD education, and collaborative professional practice.
