title Gaming Engine as a Tool for Designing Smart, Interactive, Light-Sculpting Systems
source Herrera, PC, Dreifuss-Serrano, C, Gómez, P, Arris-Calderon, LF, Critical Appropriations - Proceedings of the XXVI Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics (SIGraDi 2022), Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas, Lima, 7-11 November 2022 , pp. 617–628
summary Even though interactive (Offermans et.al., 2013), adaptive (Viani et.al., 2017), and self-optimizable (Sun et.al., 2020) lighting systems are becoming readily available, designing system automations, and evaluating their impact on user experience significantly challenges designers. In this paper we demonstrate the use of a gaming engine as a platform for designing, simulating, and evaluating autonomous smart lighting behaviors. We establish the Human - Lighting System Interaction Framework, a computational framework for developing a Light Sculpting Engine and for designing occupant-system interactions. Our results include a. a method for combining in real-time lighting IES profiles into a single ‘combined’ profile - b. algorithms that optimize in real-time, lighting configurations - c. direct glare elimination algorithms, and d. system energy use optimization algorithms. Overall, the evolution from designing static building components to designing interactive systems necessitates the reconsideration of methods and tools that allow user experience and system performance to be tuned by design.

title Immersive Simulation of Architectural Spatial Experiences
source SIGraDi 2013 [Proceedings of the 17th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISBN: 978-956-7051-86-1] Chile - Valparaíso 20 - 22 November 2013, pp. 495 - 499
summary The paper describes our research efforts seeking to assess the potential use of immersive simulation through virtual reality (VR) environments as a tool for aiding the design of architectural spatial experiences. By making use of a fully implemented HMD-based VR Environment in our school at Ball State University we conducted a controlled experiment with novice design students. After the evaluation of results of the experiment we have found evidence of the positive impact of the use of the system in design education. We will further investigate on the best practices to incorporate its pervasive use based on high-impact simplified methods.

summary In this paper, we present preliminary specifications for a computer design tool for the application of mass customization in middle class apartment design in Brazil. Believing that in the digital era, network communication and digital design tools combined may create a design environment that considers consumer needs and preferences, we present a simple drafting of a computer tool that makes use of those concepts. And therefore we believe to contribute for the future construction of a design system that redefines problem scenarios, rather than providing individual solutions, repositioning architects and clients in the design process.

summary This study presents a digital architectural design tool named “Fuzzy Layout Planner” that helps architects create two dimensional sketchy footprints for their design. The purpose of the tool is to extend limits of early design thinking. It uses fuzzy modeling techniques to adapt the ambiguous design phase. There are several commands in this digital tool to generate and modify layouts. Users can create, move, combine sketchy bubbles to form bigger footprints and see them in action dynamically. The tool offers a manual creation process.

title The Architecture of ScarCity Game - The craft and the digital as an alternative design process
source Sousa, JP, Xavier, JP and Castro Henriques, G (eds.), Architecture in the Age of the 4th Industrial Revolution - Proceedings of the 37th eCAADe and 23rd SIGraDi Conference - Volume 3, University of Porto, Porto, Portugal, 11-13 September 2019, pp. 45-52
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2019.3.045
summary The Architecture of ScarCity Game is a board game used as a pedagogical tool that challenges architecture students by involving them in a series of experimental design sessions to understand the design process of scarcity and the actual relation between the craft and the digital. This means "pragmatic delivery processes and material constraints, where the exchange between the artisan of handmade, representing local skills and technology of the digitally conceived is explored" (Huang 2013). The game focuses on understanding the different variables of the crafted design process of traditional communities under conditions of scarcity (Michel and Bevan 1992). This requires first analyzing the spatial environmental model of interaction, available human and natural resources, and the dynamic relationship of these variables in a digital era. In the first stage (Pre-Agency), the game set the concept of the craft by limiting students design exploration from a minimum possible perspective developing locally available resources and techniques. The key elements of the design process of traditional knowledge communities have to be identified (Preez 1984). In other words, this stage is driven by limited resources + chance + contingency. In the second stage (Post-Agency) students taking the architects´ role within this communities, have to speculate and explore the interface between the craft (local knowledge and low technological tools), and the digital represented by computation data, new technologies available and construction. This means the introduction of strategy + opportunity + chance as part of the design process. In this sense, the game has a life beyond its mechanics. This other life challenges the participants to exploit the possibilities of breaking the actual boundaries of design. The result is a tool to challenge conventional methods of teaching and leaning controlling a prescribed design process. It confronts the rules that professionals in this field take for granted. The game simulates a 'fake' reality by exploring in different ways with surveyed information. As a result, participants do not have anything 'real' to lose. Instead, they have all the freedom to innovate and be creative.

title Design Constraint Systems - A Generative Approach to Architecture
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 11 - no. 1, 37-63
summary Generative Architectural Design permits the automatic (or semiautomatic) generation of architectural objects for a wide range of applications, from archaeological research and reconstruction to digital sketching. In this paper the authors introduce design constraint systems (DCS), their approach to the generation of architectural design with the help of a simple example: The development of the necessary formalisms to generate a family of architectural designs, i.e. simple houses and pagodas. After explaining the formal system the authors introduce an approach for the generation of complex form based on the application of transformations and distortions.Architecture is bound by the constraints of physical reality: Gravitation and the properties of the used materials define the limits in which architectural design is possible. With the recent development of new materials and construction methods however, the ways in which form and physics go together get more complicated. As a result, the shapes of architecture gain more liberty, and more and more complex shapes and structures become possible. While these advances allow for new ways of architectural expression, they also make the design process much more challenging. For this reason new tools are necessary for making this complexity manageable for the architect and enable her to play and experiment with the new possibilities of complex shapes and structures. Design constraint systems can be used as tool for experimentation with complex form. Therefore, the authors dedicate the final part of this paper to a concise delineation of an approach for the generation of complex and irregular shapes and structures. While the examples used are simple, they give an idea of the generality of design constraint systems: By using a two-component approach to the generation of designs (the first component describes the abstract structure of the modelled objects while the second component interprets the structure and generates the actual geometric forms) and allowing the user to adjust both components freely, it can be adapted to all kind of different architectural styles, from historical to contemporary architecture.

title A New Extended Perspective System for Architectural Drawings
source Global Design and Local Materialization[Proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Futures / ISBN 978-3-642-38973-3] Shanghai, China, July 3-5, 2013, pp. 63-75.
summary This paper presents the work carried out by a multidisciplinary team of researchers, gathering knowledge in architecture, drawing, geometry, mathematics and computation. The research was directed in order to create a computational tool for architectural visualization - a new digital perspectograph - with the use of a new theoretical and operative approach to linear perspective. A new kind of projection surface, a parametric one, is added to the perspective concept under current tools. The mutations of this surface are explained and a set of graphical outputs is shown. A workshop with architecture students took place to help test and validate the concept and the computational prototype.

summary This paper presents a research on the use of shape grammars as an analytical tool in the history of architecture. It evolves within a broader project called Digital Alberti, whose goal is to determine the influence of De re aedificatoria treatise on Portuguese Renaissance architecture, making use of a computational framework (Krüger et al., 2011).Previous work was concerned with the development of a shape grammar for generating sacred buildings according to the rules textually described in the treatise. This work describes the transformation of the treatise grammar into another grammar that can also account for the generation of Alberti’s built work.

title How to Teach ‘New Tools’ in Landscape Architecture in the Digital Overload
source Stouffs, Rudi and Sariyildiz, Sevil (eds.), Computation and Performance – Proceedings of the 31st eCAADe Conference – Volume 2, Faculty of Architecture, Delft University of Technology, Delft, The Netherlands, 18-20 September 2013, pp. 545-553

summary The central theme of the paper is the introduction of hands-on tools showing the integration of information technology within a postgraduate study program (MAS LA) for landscape architects. What has already become a part of the discourse in the field of architecture – generic design – is now also finding more resonance in the context of large-scale landscape architectural design. If one studies the educational backgrounds of landscape architects, however, they often do not match the same standard as those of architects. A solid background in the area of innovative use of information technology, especially computer-assisted design and CAD/CAM construction is only at a preliminary state at most universities. The critical arguments in the choice of the selected medium and the building up of a continuous digital chain stand here in the forefront. The aim is not to improve the quality of the landscape design based on the variety of the applied tools, but rather through the sensible use of the said. Reflections as well as questions of method and theory stand at the forefront of our efforts.

title Generating 3 Dimensional Pavilions Described in Mayamatam; A Traditional Indian Architecture Treatise
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 11 - no. 1, 105-134
summary The traditional or classical architecture of India is an interesting subject for exploration from different perspectives.Taking pavilions described in Mayamatam as a representative of the traditional or classical architecture of India and analyzing them from the viewpoint of pattern recognition and mathematics encouraging results are obtained.A pattern is seen in the development of the design of pavilions and has been coded alpha-numerically. Based on the system of development and employing computer applications software is created to design pavilions, which follow the principles of traditional architecture. This software has multiple benefits. It can be used as a teaching aid for the subject ‘history of Indian Architecture’. For architectural conservationists and heritage enthusiasts it offers itself as a tool to help in visualization and digital reconstruction. For architects it can be a means for making structures of recent times, which have the essence of traditional architecture. The aim of this paper is to highlight the methodology for preparing this software and demonstrating its output.

summary Simulation programs are an important tool to reduce building energy demands. However, there are difficulties that limit the use of these applications including the understanding and interpretation of the results. Due to the uncertainty regarding the reading and interpretation of results leading to design decisions, we propose a graphical display analysis, both scientific and information, charts, tables, diagrams, etc. Which apply to both energy simulation tools as complementary programs. It seeks to establish what tools have the greatest impact in the analysis process and how it influences the design decisions.

title Tools as Design Instruments: Computers and Cognition?
source Global Design and Local Materialization[Proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Futures / ISBN 978-3-642-38973-3] Shanghai, China, July 3-5, 2013, pp. 1-12.
summary This inquiry researches the impact of digital tools on the design process and empirically tests the association between computer aided design tools and each of cognition and creativity in architectural practice. The paper analyses the ‘design-tool’ relationship and reviews research in the field of computers as an instrument for creativity, examines their deductions and conducts a case study. Statistical analysis of the case study suggests that three measures of creativity correlated significantly with the length of time a subject spends using the computer in design: rho=0.487, P<0.05 for elaboration of design ideas; rho=0.605, P<0.05, for volume of ideas; rho=0.687, P<0.05, for ideation variety. Also, the length of designer-computer interaction seems to scaffold various forms of design reasoning and help cognition: rho=0.591, P<0.05. The study found little evidence to support the notion that computers prevent other forms of knowing.

summary In this paper we aimed at the development of a novel tool to facilitate the structured analysis of architectural construction principles, materials and production methods in digital design and fabrication practices. In order to assist the understanding and teaching of these subjects, we employed a taxonomy of spatial design construction (Vrouwe 2013). By using the taxonomy, we analysed and categorised 34 parametric structures published in the IJAC Journal (2002-2014). Informed by this study, we aligned the initial taxonomy using various framing strategies. As a result we developed a new framework for spatial design construction specifically customised for the design and fabrication of parametric structures which can potentially serve as a constructive tool to create a novel design learning environment and integrated teaching strategies.

title How Space Experimentation Can Inform Design: Immersive Virtual Reality as a Design Tool
source SIGraDi 2013 [Proceedings of the 17th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISBN: 978-956-7051-86-1] Chile - Valparaíso 20 - 22 November 2013, pp. 182 - 186
summary Immersive virtual reality allows us to experience the space even before it’s constructed. In this way, the use of such an environment plays a decisive role in the design process in architecture. The spaces that architects design may now be evaluated in a real scale mode which enable the understanding of problems and/or opportunities that space bring to the buildings. The goal of this paper is to define the methodological framework for using an immersive virtual environment, namely CaveH, in an Architectural design process by exploring the use of real-time rendering. We intend that the developed software and infrastructure will be used in a very easy way as a valid design tool to any professional. Two 3d models were experiment along this research each one of them regarding to a different type of design problem.
