summary On behalf of the BBR (German Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning) the development of an Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) based inspection tool was accomplished as application on an underlying work-in-progress development framework. By providing a machine-based checking process the tool ModelCheck was rolled out to meet demands emerged during pilot projecting. Thus it is capable of processing automated compliance checks on quality criteria for the authorities, e.g. documentation guidelines of BBR regarding building and real estate documentation or building information modeling (BIM) quality criteria formed for the Humboldt-Forum project – a BIM pilot-project managed by BBR. ModelCheck supports checks on IFC models - formal against schemes and logical inspection with regards to alpha-numeric content by using xml-based configurable rules.

summary The nature of the architectural design process can be described along the lines of the following representational devices: the plan and the model. Plans can be considered one of the oldest methods to represent spatial and aesthetic information in an abstract, 2D space. However, to be used in the design process of 3D architectural solutions, these representations are inherently limited by the loss of rich information that occurs when compressing the three-dimensional world into a two-dimensional representation. During the first Digital Turn (Carpo 2013), the sheer amount and availability of models increased dramatically, as it became viable to create vast amounts of model variations to explore project alternatives among a much larger range of different physical and creative dimensions. 3D models show how the design object appears in real life, and can include a wider array of object information that is more easily understandable by nonexperts, as exemplified in techniques such as building information modeling and parametric modeling. Therefore, the ground condition of this paper considers that the inherent nature of architectural design and sensibility lies in the negotiation of 3D space coupled with the organization of voids and spatial components resulting in spatial sequences based on programmatic relationships, resulting in an assemblage (DeLanda 2016). These conditions constitute objects representing a material culture (the built environment) embedded in a symbolic and aesthetic culture (DeLanda 2016) that is created by the designer and captures their sensibilities.

summary Interoperability and integration between design, analysis and fabrication in architectural practice allow building façade systems to be increasingly complex and non-standard. As customized building façade systems increase in contemporary buildings, it is important to adopt the integrated design process that aids problem solving and design-making in façade design. The primary goal of this study is to explore the integrated design process that incorporates building information modeling and parametric performance analysis tools in order to understand sustainability opportunities in sustainable façade fabrication. The integration of building information modeling (BIM) and parametric performance analysis tools poses a unique design process whose resolution has the potential to improve sustainability in built environment and façade fabrication efficiency. This paper uses an academic design research project, the Reading Pavilion located in the UNC Charlotte campus, as a case study to investigate the integrated design process of a building façade system, which was supported by quantitative data using BIM, parametric performance analysis, and rapid prototyping tools.

summary This paper describes the process of digital design and fabrication for customized building facades and effects from highly customized configurations in U.S., major manufacturing power of China, and emerging construction in Asia and South America. Case studies are presented to form comparisons of technology adoption to project workflow in these three global contexts. Although integration of digital fabrication has shown signs of success in U.S., traditional practices of limited digital information exchange are commonplace in Asia and South America. With focus on adoption of new fabrication tools, BIM and larger production capacity, the potential benefits of digital fabrication are imminent.

summary This paper provides a state-of-the-art of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in the building industry. Two methods were used to find this new knowledge: a series of interviews with leading architecture, engineering, and software professionals; and a series of tests in which CFD software was evaluated using comparable criteria. The paper reports findings in technology, workflows, projects, current unmet needs, and future directions. In buildings, airflow is fundamental for heating and cooling, as well as occupant comfort and productivity. Despite its importance, the design of airflow systems is outside the realm of much of architectural design practice; but with advances in digital tools, it is now possible for architects to integrate air flow into their building design workflows (Peters and Peters 2018). As Chen (2009) states, “In order to regulate the indoor air parameters, it is essential to have suitable tools to predict ventilation performance in buildings.” By enabling scientific data to be conveyed in a visual process that provides useful analytical information to designers (Hartog and Koutamanis 2000), computer performance simulations have opened up new territories for design “by introducing environments in which we can manipulate and observe” (Kaijima et al. 2013). Beyond comfort and productivity, in recent months it has emerged that air flow may also be a matter of life and death. With the current global pandemic of SARS-CoV-2, it is indoor environments where infections most often happen (Qian et al. 2020). To design architecture in a post-COVID-19 environment will require an in-depth understanding of how air flows through space.

summary Governments in Australia are faced with policy implementation that mandates higher energy efficient housing (Foran, Lenzen & Dey 2005). To this effect, the National Construction Code (NCC) 2013 stipulates the minimum energy performance for residential buildings as 114MJ/m2 per annum or 6 stars on an energy rating scale. Compliance with this minimum is mandatory but there are several methods through which residential buildings can be rated to comply with the deemed to satisfy provisions outlined in the NCC. FirstRate5 is by far the most commonly used simulation software used in Victoria, Australia. Meanwhile, Building Information Modelling (BIM), using software such as ArchiCAD has gained a foothold in the industry. The energy simulation software within ArchiCAD, EcoDesigner, enables the reporting on the energy performance based on BIM elements that contain thermal information. This research is founded on a comparative study between FirstRate5 and EcoDesigner. Three building types were analysed and compared. The comparison finds significant differences between simulations, being, measured areas, thermal loads and potentially serious shortcomings within FirstRate5, that are discussed along with the future potential of a fully BIM-integrated model for energy rating certification in Victoria.

summary This paper describes the current stage of an ongoing research developed at Mackenzie Presbyterian University, with support of FINEP, to use information and communication technologies (ICT) for the production of affordable houses in Brazil, focusing on the government’s program “Minha Casa Minha Vida” (My Home My Life – MCMV). Here we highlight the specific issue of adapting and extending the current BIM library of components provided by the Ministry of Development, Industry and Trade (MDIC), since the validity of the standard NBR 15575/13, which as of 2013, will guide the production of buildings in Brazil through strict performance requirements. We make a brief summary of the MCMV program, the terms of the standard and the structure of that library and then present guidelines for adapting and extending the existing components, taking into account international examples and the requirements from the new standard. As a result, we expect the revised components will facilitate the work of professionals in the building industry when designing and planning buildings.

summary The paper presents the findings of a systematic literature review of approximately 200 scientific sources. It is designed with the aim to identify the current benefits and factors of high performance in Architecture, Engineering, Construction (AEC) since the introduction of Building Information Modelling (BIM). We formed and confirmed two main propositions associating the performance of the AEC to the use of BIM. The mapping of the current impact and benefits of BIM showed that the role of the managers, suppliers, owners and authorities is underestimated, as well as the initiation and use stage of project development. At the same time, the performance in the AEC industry can be improved by an array of possibilities where IT research and policy-making authorities contribute – from establishing new collaboration protocols until improving existing or creating new BIM tools.

summary This paper outlines an approach to adaptive residential design explored through recent research and an executed prototype, the North House project (2007-2009), undertaken through an interdisciplinary collaboration of researchers and students from the University of Waterloo, Ryerson University and Simon Fraser University in concert with professional and industry partners. This project aimed to develop a framework for the delivery of adaptive detached residential buildings capable of net-zero energy performance in the temperate climate zone, or the near north. Within this project, the term “adaptive” is developed across several tracts of conceptualization and execution including site and climatically derived models for building material composition and envelope ratios, environmentally-responsive kinetic envelope components, intelligent HVAC controls and interactive interface design aimed at producing co-evolutionary behaviors between building systems and inhabitants. A provisional definition of adaptive architecture is outlined to address this range of considerations that calls into question the stable image of domestic architecture and its relationship to energy and contemporary assumptions regarding sustainable design. This paper also outlines computational approaches to design optimization, distributed building systems integration and the human-controls interfaces applicable to the home’s ecology of physical and information technologies.

summary This paper discusses the experience of the initial phase of introduction of the BIM paradigm in the undergraduate program in Architecture and Urbanism (evening course) of FAUFBA. We started from the premise that BIM should be adopted gradually and integrated with the various subjects of the course, and should be initiated through the disciplines of graphic representation. The proposal for this course is presented and practices are discussed, as they were experienced in the discipline of Computing and Design II, which deals with this paradigm. It was observed that BIM process requires significant changes, as it encountered some initial resistance from the students. However, this approach increases the understanding of building and facilitates the project documentation. Furthermore, the understanding of the scope of the paradigm was crucial to the effective use of the adopted tool.

summary Nowadays ICT tools are part of the cultural tradition of designers and over time have replaced pencil and paper in design development. The application programs for design are many and for different purposes, but the role and importance of Context often are underestimated. For new tradition, it needs “Context Knowledge Model” based on ontologies for the management of buildings and preservation and enhancement of cultural heritage with technological innovation. Context modeling gives the opportunity to address the management of pre-existing building in a conscious way. The interoperability of data and knowledge of Context is important to analyze the quality of building process. This is based on standard concepts of the project for the recovery and restoration of the buildings starting from knowledge of context. The goal of this research is to exploit information technology to advance and define knowledge of context monitoring, management and maintenance of historic buildings. The representation of context is important to understand physical, social, economic and normative Context in which the building was placed. The process used to analyze Context entities were Ontologies. This theoretical model will be applied to underground archaeological Roman sites, to implement semantic levels in IFC and BIM for building design.

summary There has been a significant need for the new urban design apparatus that carries out performance analyses of the urban models, since the code reform movements focused on the sustainable urban developments. This research explores the use of parametric Building Information Modeling to enable stakeholders to intuitively understand the implications and consequences of urban design codes. We investigate whether key regulations can be captured as algorithms and ontologies in parametric BIM and Object-Oriented Programming. Then we present our prototype of parametric urban models in a BIM platform that explains (1) the extent which urban design code information can be parameterized in BIM and (2) the methods how parametric models can hold code information. The results show that our prototype enables real-time manipulations of code requirements and interactive visualization of code allowances.

summary The BIM software (Building Information Modeling) enables a holistic model -a complete description of the model-building for a complete analysis and validation prior to build, as well as the plotting of final design in architecture and its subsequent maintenance. Users can extend virtually unlimited capabilities. For this reason we have chosen a BIM with programmability by the user to create a calculation module to validate, the heat transfer and possible condensation on both walls and ceilings. The Revit Architecture BIM was chosen using the API (application programming interface) in C#. In this paper, we analyze the experience gained and the results achieved. The objective is to create a calculation and graphing module thermal transmission and condensation.

summary The demand for sustainable buildings with minimal environmental impact and efficient energy use is increasing. The most effective design decisions for sustainable design can be made in the early design phases, but appropriate tools to explore design alternatives and understand their impacts on building energy performance are not available at this stage of the project. The integration of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and parametric modeling is the new trend of building modeling, which can greatly benefit sustainable building design. This research introduces an innovative tool to facilitate integrated parametric BIM and to enhance its applications towards creative, sustainable building design through simulation and optimization. The created tool, Revit2GBSOpt, integrates parametric BIM and building energy performance simulation and enables designers to generate alternative options in BIM to explore the energy performance simulation results automatically. Finding the optimized solution, the BIM model will be updated.

summary The fusion between building assessment and design can lead to better informed design decisions. Performance oriented design is better supported through the use of interoperable file formats for data exchange between BIM and non-BIM tools. At the same time, the parameters that influence the calculation during a performative assessment are no longer a purely engineering problem, since 3D modeling is of primary importance in defining the numerical output. The role of the designer along with the selection of the tools becomes all more relevant in this direction. A framework is presented hereby, which can be used for the selection between different BIM tools for daylight assessment. An insight is also given on the major parameters that can affect the outcome and on the obstacles that were experienced in four case-studies in relation to data exchange and information flow.

summary The use of solar energy in buildings requires defining proper systems according to different urban typologies. This paper presents a strategy for assessment in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and a parametric analysis of an detached housing typology in Building Information Modeling (BIM), which demonstrates an integrated approach to estimate solar energy potential, applied to the context of Concepción, Chile. Residential areas are identified with different energy consumption and solar capture in roofs, walls or outside space recorded in a urban GIS, and checks the architectural implementation of a roofing system in residential buildings through an integrated evaluation and design in BIM.

summary Computer-based tools have changed the focus and modes of design thinking in architecture. While often criticized for its overemphasis on formal expressions and its pursuit of the spectacular, digital creativity has begun to take into account a multiplicity of design factors that define architecture. These factors relate to performance simulation and analysis, constructability, and building information modeling (BIM). This paper discusses the use of physical and digital mock-ups in the context of building technology courses. It uses these mock-ups as an important vehicle that provides students with a feedback mechanism regarding often digitally idealized creative thinking.

summary I have conducted a study to explore aerodynamic performance as a driver for skyscraper design, utilizing up-to-date parametric design and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technologies readily available to architects. Previous scientific research has suggested strategies in modifying the form of skyscrapers for the purpose of improving their aerodynamic performance. I have incorporated six of such strategies into parametric design tool to produce a matrix of 60 prototypes. These prototypes are subjected to qualitative and quantitatively evaluation iterations to yield the most optimized design, with considerations given primarily to aerodynamic performance, and secondarily to structural robustness, program potential, and image attractiveness. The selected design option is further developed into a skyscraper concept. A multi-staged aerodynamic performance-driven design process is the most important result of the study. In addition, two valuable insights have been obtained: first, to inject a new inspiration into the design of skyscrapers, I have implemented the MultiDisciplinary Optimization (MDO) methodology from the aerospace industry. Second, I am able to support form-generation parametric design by quantitative evaluation process.

summary The resolution of architecture is a measure of the spatial density of information inherent in a building. This paper demonstrates how the confluence of advances in computational design and additive manufacturing has recently led to a paradigm shift in potential architectural resolution. Buildings can now be designed and fabricated with elements at the threshold of human perception. This resolution can be used to replicate existing architectural styles ever more efficiently and accurately. Yet as with the introduction of other new technologies, architects must now explore the latent potentials and determine what kind of new architectures become conceivable. Specifically, what architectures can adequately express this enormous resolution and the unlimited geometric complexity within reach? With the project Digital Grotesque, we present the first human-scale, enclosed structure that truly exploits these opportunities. Algorithms are used to articulate and orchestrate the geometry from the macro scale down to 1mm small details. The structure is enriched with local information at a previously unseen resolution. A unique language of form is developed that transcends rationality and celebrates spatial expression: a digital exuberance.
