summary Knowledge based design is acquired through one's exposure to a large number of projects and establishes a set of patterns regarding organizations, techniques, procedures, heuristics, priorities and preferences. Over time, designers develop a distinctive set of principles that represent their own individual methods of addressing design problems. Creative designers not only design the solutions, they also design the problems. Although their repertoire of resources includes explicit declarations regarding recognizable problem types, physical components, design rules, or evaluation methods of different aspects, design decisions are also driven by vast amounts of tacit considerations derived from professional experience. Designers make such decisions balancing design intent and technical requirements in a very efficient and synthetic manner. We designers know what we do, but it is not so clear how we do it. This conference is an invitation to engage in a dialogue concerning how Design Knowledge can be represented and manipulated within digital environments.

summary The present work explains the preliminary results of the Research project that the authors are working on to know the way in which the architecture students of the UNNE represent the architectural object with analogues and digital methods. It wants to express the impact of the digital world over the representations through cross sections in five moments of their formation (beginner’s level, first, second, fourth and sixth years) in the school calendars 2013 to 2016. This qualitative research, descriptive and explanatory, expands in the virtual workshop, an innovative and unique experience of a collaborative workshop between the subjects of Architecture IV of different Universities.

summary The paper presents ongoing applied research on the development of a computational design tool addressing planning deficiencies in the city of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Because of increasing population pressure and a lack of planning resources, Addis Ababa is clearly in need of new efficient planning solutions. The tool proposed utilizes and combines different generative design methods in order to increase the efficiency of planning and construction processes. The paper discusses design goals and the implementation strategy involved.

summary LAGA is an all-purpose library to create and design Genetic Algorithms (GAs). Originally the library was born as a series of GAs as a search and optimize tool for author's PhD thesis. The originals GAs were applied to different architectural scales: Urban design, architectural design, space optimization and energy design optimization. At the beginning the algorithms were written in different platforms: Rhinoscript, C#.NET and GCScript. The author after finish his PhD, he decided to put all the algorithms in a single language. JAVA was selected to create a flexible Genetic Algorithm library to use in different platforms.

summary The questions on this article point to a different understanding of the image with its different medias, more specifically where the digitalization and manipulation of the image unfocussed the once sharp and clear frontiers between photography and painting. The contemporary visual artists share a desire for the impurity and contagion in the relations between the photographic and the pictorial. The works alternate themselves between these bases besides exploring new relationships between them. It is not important anymore how an image derives into another, and today the term image manipulation can be applied for both photography and painting.

summary In this paper we present a studio framework that connects Ruskin’s conception of beauty and digital design tools. We define eight different aspects of beauty that are studied via natural and artificial patterns. These studies developed by students are later applied to a site and program in the second half of the studio. Some of the works of the students are presented while narrating the overall pedagogical process. The aim of the paper is to present a unique approach that combines theory on beauty with digital tools in order to re-define design research as an open-ended and dynamic practice.

summary Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), as their names imply, are models of information at different scales that usually appear segregated. Our proposal is to integrate both scales of information in a Campus Information Model (CIM). This paper focuses on the description of this integration in terms of information and knowledge models, from the point of view of landscape design. We emphasize on the description of CLIM, an interactive tabletop we have developed to support collaboration and planning of landscape, which is constructed using models of information and knowledge to perform assessments, including quantitative aspects of effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction of certain features of the Georgia Tech Campus.

Based on this concept, we propose to fill empty spaces from the current communication of culture from Goverment of Córdoba. There is an information movement and events in conection to crowd. We propose a device, that broadcasts the contents of the hashtag: #quetenemoshoy, making it more popular, and in everyone's range. We set out a collaboration situation, with a concrete proposal, that includes dialogue with its surroundings. Articulating knowledge from different disciplines, between the goverment and the residents. Following neologism from Gutiérrez-Rubí y Freire (2013),we propose will be CITY-CROWD-CREATING.

summary This research design aims to understand medication delivery behavior under different spatial configurations through the virtualization of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) environments. Architectural visualization using virtual reality is used to demonstrate capabilities in capturing experiential data. Three different Intensive Care Unit floor plans were modeled and presented in 3D virtual environments. Tasks were developed to simulate nurses’ activities during medication delivery to be analyzed for variables thought to affect nurse efficiency, nurse effectiveness, and satisfaction.

summary This paper presents an airflow study with Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) software that was used to model the natural ventilation attributes at the interior of a prototype house. This study informed the design development phase of the house and guided the design of a dynamic curtain wall involving a matrix of 3 x 9 openable windows for its south façade. Alternative ways of modeling the building geometry were employed and different possible states of the house were examined to determine how change in the orientation and the basic dimensions of the envelope, and modifications in the number, distribution and angle of the open windows affect natural ventilation.

summary Design is characterized by change. Nowadays, addressing change in design requires enormous efforts, particularly, when the designer is exploring different solutions or when it is necessary to adapt the design to evolving constraints. This paper discusses the potential of Generative Design to help designers handling change, namely in the generation of several alternative design solutions. We propose a programming-based approach that, although requiring an initial investment, dramatically reduces the efforts of design modification. We evaluate the approach in a case study and we show that it is cost-effective in the development of an architectural design.

title Does the Debate on Stress Effect Lead Evacuation Simulation Models to Different Performances?

summary There exists a long time debate over the rational state of the evacuees in the evacuation simulation. Sime et al. insisted that the evacuees behave rationally in most cases. Following this argument Arthur and Passini concluded that if a setting works well under normal conditions, it will have a better chance of working well in emergency conditions. Such an argument for rational decision-making makes statistical models, such as Utility Maximizing Model (UMM), acting as proper framework for choice modelling in evacuation. However, on the other side, some people pointed out that there exists panic in the evacuation and bounded rationality theory, represented by pruned Decision Tree Model (DTM), should be adapted in choice modelling instead. Such a debate over stress effect causes hesitations and uncertainties when researchers try to select a proper model framework for their practical simulation. This study compared the performances (prediction accuracies) of the UMM and DTM with the same set of choice data collected in a virtual evacuation experiment. With a similar level of performance on both sides, it is suggested that the on-going debate does NOT bring any difference to the choice modelling in practical evacuation simulation. It is time to improve the performance rather than to continue the debate.

summary We present the foundations of a research project which is currently in development. This project aims to explore new dimensions and configurations of a traditionally one-dimensional Time. Initially we have systematized the material produced since 2005 with students of History of Architecture in relation to analogical (multidimensional) Timemaps, while we sought for theoretical tools that allows its interpretation. We have characterized different times and durations, from phenomenological aspects of temporal construction and perception, to historical and natural phenomena of long duration. Finally, we explored analogical and digital visualization tools to understand the intrinsic complexity of Time and its models.

summary This article presents the formal results obtained from the same project, defined at the initial stage, modeled in three different CAD systems, exported and prototyped in two different types of three-dimensional printer. These digital systems have varying degrees of precision, can result in rapid prototyping different from the original virtual model, and this could frustrate the user's initial expectations, due to the need of modeling rework. The proper use of these tools can be helpful, since the beginning of the design process, with quick and reliable information, regarding the formal intent of the architect.

summary Immersive virtual reality allows us to experience the space even before it’s constructed. In this way, the use of such an environment plays a decisive role in the design process in architecture. The spaces that architects design may now be evaluated in a real scale mode which enable the understanding of problems and/or opportunities that space bring to the buildings. The goal of this paper is to define the methodological framework for using an immersive virtual environment, namely CaveH, in an Architectural design process by exploring the use of real-time rendering. We intend that the developed software and infrastructure will be used in a very easy way as a valid design tool to any professional. Two 3d models were experiment along this research each one of them regarding to a different type of design problem.

summary Basic research in morphology is a relevant contribution to Industrial Design. During the last years we have been studying cutting and unfolding techniques, in particular the correspondence between cutting patterns and the different types of flexibility provided to rigid sheets through laser cutting. Different types and generative strategies have been developed and tested in their application in product design and in teaching. This paper presents three products that were originated in the knowledge produced by a research project. They are a sample of the potential of the interactions between morphology and digital technology.
