summary Traditionally, interactivity in architecture has been suppressed by its materiality. Building structures that can transform and change themselves have been the dream of many architects for centuries. With the continuous advancements in technology and the paradigm shift from mechanics to electronics, this dream is becoming reality. Today, it is possible to have building facades that can visually animate themselves, change their appearance, or even interact with their surroundings. In this paper, we introduce Architectural Chameleon Skin (ARCS), an installation that has the ability to transform static, motionless architectural surfaces into interactive and engaging skins. Swarm algorithms drive the interactivity and responsiveness of this “virtual skin”. In particular, the virtual skin responds to colour, movements, and distance of surrounding objects. We provide a comprehensive description and analysis of the ARCS installation.

summary The paper describes the development, testing, and initial findings of a design tool that generates parametrically defined, semi-automatically analyzed, and visualized structural performance of specific truss designs. The prototypical design tool provides structural truss solutions for spans of uniform to non-uniform surface curvatures. Real-time visual structural performance feedback enables the designer to more rapidly develop viable and potentially more efficient designs under user defined load conditions. The research methodology is an example of reinforcing structural learning and intuition within the design process. The research presents findings of the impact of iterative and interactive structural feedback through the development of a parametrically integrated structural truss analysis tool for aiding in design decision support.

summary The optimisation of semi-transparent building integrated photovoltaic facades can be challenging when finding an overall balanced performance between conflicting performance criteria. This paper proposes a design optimisation method that maximises overall energy savings generated by these types of facades by simulating the combined impact of electricity generation, cooling load, and daylight autonomy. A proof-of-concept demonstration of the proposed method is presented for a typical office facade.

summary This paper presents a visibility analysis tool for 3D urban environments and its possible applications for urban design practice. Literature exists for performing visibility analysis using various methods and techniques, however, tools that result from such research are generally not suitable for use by designers in practice. Our visibility analysis tool resides in Grasshopper, Rhino. It uses a ray casting method to analyze the visibility of façade surfaces from a given vantage point, and of a given urban setting, in particular, buildings and roads. The latter analysis provides information on the best visible buildings/building facades from segments of roads. We established a collaboration with a practicing architect to work on a design competition together, using this tool. The paper elaborates on the visibility analysis methods, presents the tool in detail, discusses the results of our joint work on the competition, and briefly reflects on the evaluation of the use of the tool by design practitioners.

summary Today buildings are increasingly responsive to the weather. In such responsive buildings an “Open System” is emerging which consists of a coupling between buildings and their temporal environments. This paper assesses whether these new technologies, in addition to potentially reducing energy consumption, can also lead to a new experiential relation between building users and the weather. The paper qualitatively assesses current examples of Responsive Facades and their effect on the user’s experience of the weather. The information structures of the facade systems are then examined. From this analysis identify potential future avenues of research –or strategies – which may be most effective in making the weather apparent. Finally some design proposals which explore the possibilities of these strategies are presented. The paper is intended to complement the current, primarily technical, emphasis of research in this area by exploring the innovative architectural potential of Responsive Facades to create new user experiences and relations to the weather.

summary Rethinking Comprehensive Design—the 19th International Conference on Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA 2014)—emphasises a cross-disciplinary context to challenge the mainstream culture of computational design in architecture. It aims to (re)explore the potential of computational design methods and technologies in architecture from a holistic perspective. The conference provides an international forum where academics and practitioners share their novel research development and reflection for defining the future of computation in architectural design. Hosted by the Department of Design, Engineering and Management at the Kyoto Institute of Technology, CAADRIA 2014 presents 88 peer-reviewed full papers from all over the world. These high-quality research papers are complimented by 34 short work-in-progress papers submitted for the poster session of the conference. The conference proceedings were produced by a motivated team of volunteers from the CAADRIA community through an extensive collaboration. The 88 full papers rigorously double-blind reviewed by the dedicated International Review Committee (consisting of 74 experts), testify to CAADRIA’s highly respectable international standing. Call for abstracts sent out in July 2013 attracted 298 submissions. They were initially reviewed by the Paper Selection Committee who accepted 198 abstracts for further development. Of these, 118 full papers were eventually submitted in the final stage. Each submitted paper was then assessed by at least two members of the International Review Committee. Following the reviewers’ recommendations, 91 papers were accepted by the conference, of which 88 are included in this volume and for presentation in CAADRIA 2014. Collectively, these 88 papers define Rethinking Comprehensive Design in terms of the following research streams: Shape Studies; User Participation in Design; Human-Computer Interaction; Digital Fabrication and Construction; Computational Design Analysis; New Digital Design Concepts and Strategies; Practice-Based and Interdisciplinary Computational Design Research; Collaborative and Collective Design; Generative, Parametric and Evolutionary Design; Design Cognition and Creativity; Virtual / Augmented Reality and Interactive Environments; Computational Design Research and Education; and Theory, Philosophy and Methodology of Computational Design Research. summary In order to support an architect’s decision to evaluate and choose more efficient structural solutions in the concept design, it is necessary to establish an interactive feedback loop between structural solver and geometry modeller which would allow one to analyse a great number of solutions generated in the scripting design process. Defining a cross-disciplinary data structure as an analytical model, the communication between existing structural solver (OOFEM) and geometry modeller (Grasshopper) was established. Automation of the entire analysis process was done by the bridging tools MIDAS and Donkey, which have been developed. This paper presents the method of creation of an analytical model by Donkey, and deals with how to visualize, interpret and use the result values from the structural analysis.

title Exploring Urban Space: Volumetric Site Analysis for Conceptual Design in the Urban Context

summary This paper proposes a set of new analytic and visualization methods for conceptual design in the urban context. The methodology is based on the discretization of the urban site into a volumetric grid of points. For each of these points, different physical properties such as solar radiation, airflow, and visibility are computed. Subsequently interactive visualization techniques allow the observation of the site at a volumetric, directional and dynamic level, making visible information that is typically invisible. Several case-studies demonstrate how this allows to generate suggestions, for example, for the definition of the form of a building or for the rationalization of its surfaces. This approach aims at developing a conceptual design process that allows the fusion of active technologies, passive methods, and expressive aspects, in cohesive concepts able to embrace and exploit the diversities of an urban site.

summary The article proposes to explore the concepts of storytelling (Lupton, 2020 and Xavier, 2015) and ubiquity (Santaella, 2013 and Santos, 2021) applied to the design of natural and invisible interfaces (Benyon, 2011). With Natural Interface it is possible to interact with devices directly, without needing the help of a mouse or keyboard. To do so, it presents as a case study the project “Criatura de Luz” (2015), by Estúdio Guto Requena, carried out to compose the new facade of the WZ Hotel (Sao Paulo). The purpose of this research is to understand the role of the designer in the creation of interfaces that are not only interactive, but that begin to propose immersive and ubiquitous narratives in design projects and the method for this analysis will be the case study from the design perspective as storytelling proposed by Lupton (2020). The aim is to do exploratory research to provide greater familiarity with the problem.

summary This paper discusses the design exploration of funicular shell structures based on Thrust Network Analysis (TNA) The presented graphical form finding approach and its interactive, digital-tool implementation target to foster the understanding of the relation between form and force in compression curved surface structures in an intuitive and playful way. Based on this understanding, the designer can fully take advantage of the presented method and digital tools to adapt the efficient structural system to the specific needs of different architectural applications. The paper focuses on simple examples to visualize the graphical concept of various modification techniques used for this form finding approach. Key operations and modifications have been identified and demonstrate the surprisingly flexible and manifold design space of funicular form. This variety of shapes and spatial articulation of funicular form is further investigated by discussing several built prototypes.

summary The idea of ‘city’ has now surpassed its physical concept. The emergence of the Internet and the growing development of information and communication technologies (ICT) have changed the behaviour of our society in the past decade and revolutionised the traditional ways of representing space. The classic 2D (floor plans, sections and elevations) and 3D representations have been gradually replaced by 3D digital models that can reproduce buildings and places in a virtual environment.3D digital models are tools that enable a wide range of applications in urban planning and management, especially in architectural and data documentation where they allow the analysis of theoretical scenarios such as: 1) representation of the past, considering the procedures needed to restore the heritage; 2) visualisation of the present, to enable dissemination and communication of the city as it is; and, 3) simulation of the future, with the model being used to visualise and experiment with architectural objects, even those at a design stage. The main contribution of this work is to present an urban application developed into a GeoBIM tool, ESRI City Engine Software (CE), that integrates GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and BIM (Building Information Modelling) concepts. Finally, to enhance its potential, three spatial analyses were conducted.

summary Daylight is a crucial element for indoor environment quality. Office buildings commonly use fully glazed façades to reflect a luxurious appearance and to maximize natural light at the expenses of high energy consumption due to cooling/heating. Double-skin façades are one of the solutions that improve the building efficiency while maintaining good natural lighting. This paper studies the impact of various perforated outer skins for non-sealed double-skin facades on light quality in prototypical office space in Egypt using parametric design. A traditional solution for light such as the Mashrabiya is taken as an inspiration for this study to generate different forms of perforated screens. The cases were analysed using light simulation tool and sorted by a genetic algorithm to show best 30 solutions offered by the design criteria. A methodology to achieve these objectives was suggested in this paper to reach better light quality in indoor spaces.

summary This paper describes the process of digital design and fabrication for customized building facades and effects from highly customized configurations in U.S., major manufacturing power of China, and emerging construction in Asia and South America. Case studies are presented to form comparisons of technology adoption to project workflow in these three global contexts. Although integration of digital fabrication has shown signs of success in U.S., traditional practices of limited digital information exchange are commonplace in Asia and South America. With focus on adoption of new fabrication tools, BIM and larger production capacity, the potential benefits of digital fabrication are imminent.

summary Damage in façades rendering is a problem that has been much discussed currently since such damage is important to the degradation process of building. There are many techniques to verify damages in façades and in other external parts of buildings; however, some techniques have restrictions regarding their practical applications. This work deals with the application of the remote sensing (RM) technique. Such technique derives from the need to identify, locate and scale, quickly, accurately and without human risk, the existing damage or potential damages that may appear in the façades of buildings. Moreover, the RM technique may help to detect damages not visible at long distance or in location of difficult access. This technique is performed by corrected high-resolution panoramic images generated from a mosaic of pictures taken with a standard digital camera coupled in a robotic platform. The Itamaraty Palace, a government building, located in Brasília - DF (Brazil), is the object of the present study. The correction of the Itamaraty Palace panoramic image was carried out so that the identification, quantification and mapping of the Palace façade damages were performed using specific softwares such as GigaPan Stitch, AutoCAD and ArcGIS.

summary The "PURE Tension" Pavilion is a lightweight, rapidly deployable, tensioned membrane structure and portable charging station commissioned by Volvo Car Italia to showcase the new Volvo V60 Hybrid Electric Diesel car. Officially launched in Milan, Italy in October 2013, this experimental structure was developed through a process of rigorous research and development that investigated methods of associative modelling, dynamic mesh relaxation, geometric rationalization, solar incidence analysis, membrane panelling, and material performance. It is an experimental structure that, similar to a concept car, is a working prototype that speculates on the potential future of personal mobility and alternative energy sources for transportation while also exploring digital design methodologies and innovative structural solutions. This paper will illustrate the design, development and fabrication processes involved in realizing this structure.

summary This paper presents the development of an SLS 3D printed auxetic structure actuated to a predefined form by an embedded pneumatic network through an iterative process of feedback between digital simulation and physical testing. This feedback process is critical to the development of a more accurate predictive model, and to compose the geometry of the suggested structure. An approach based on the emergence of the final structure from the convergence of the behaviour of sub-structures and a methodology based on the analysis and synthesis of the simplest sub-system is the core of this research. The results indicate a promising simulation environment and a novel methodology for the design and fabrication of auxetic structures with embedded pneumatic actuation. This exploratory research suggests a fertile space for investigation within the field of adaptive architecture and soft kinetic design.

Additionally, the purpose of the building may range from performing, sustaining, servicing, symbolising, to entertaining (we propose to call this the world view). Combined, the interaction view and world view establish 20 different attitudes, which are flavours of behaviour for the interactive building. Through attitudes interaction profiles can be established and criteria derived for the design of interactive buildings.

summary The article presents an experience of association between a hackerspace and a multidisciplinary design studio at the Department of Architecture and Urbanism of the Federal University of Santa Catarina, during two semesters. The Tarrafa Hacker Club members shared their collaborative environment with the students and tutors throughout the academic experiment. The hacker culture highlighted dynamic relations that connect people, information, tools and matter. This approach has suggested meaningful speculations about the future of architecture education and practice.

summary This paper discusses the evolution of an interface used to introduce eletronics in the foundation design course at the School of Architecture at Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil. The use of this interface by the students triggers the discussion of the possibilities of new technologies in architecture and initiates a tactical learning process in which the students are responsible for the very content they are learning. This interface introduces the discussion of interactivity and indeterminism, crucial to the development of the two main works of the course: an individual interactive object and an urban interactive intervention in group.
