title Towards a Genome for Zero Carbon Retrofit of UK Housing

summary The United Kingdom has some of the worst insulated housing stock in Northern Europe. This is in part due to the age of housing in the UK, with over 90% being built before 1990 [McCrone 2017, Piddington 2020]. Moreover, 85% of current UK housing will still be in use in 2050 by which stage their Government are targeting Net Carbon Zero [Eyre 2019]. Domestic energy use accounts for around 25% of UK carbon emissions. The UK will need to retrofit 20 million dwellings in order to meet this target. If this delivery were evenly spread, it would equate to over 2,000 retrofit completions each day. Government-funded initiatives are stimulating the market, with upwards of 60,000 social housing retrofits planned for 2023, but it is clear that a system must be developed to enable the design and implementation of housing-stock improvement at a large scale.This paper charts the 20-year development of a digital approach to the design for low-carbon domestic retrofit by architects Constructive Thinking Studio Limited and thence documents the emergence of a collaborative approach to retrofit patterns on a National scale. The author has led the Research and Development stream of this practice, developing a Building Information Modelling methodology and integrated Energy Modelling techniques to optimise design for housing retrofit [Georgiadou 2019, Ben 2020], and then inform a growing palette of details and a database of validated solutions [Moorhouse 2013] that can grow and be used to predict options for future projects [D’Angelo 2022]. The data is augmented by monitoring energy and environmental performance, enabling a growing body of knowledge that can be aligned with existing big data to simulate the benefits of nationwide stock improvement. The paper outlines incremental case studies and collaborative methods pivotal in developing this work The proposed outcome of the work is a Retrofit Genome that is available at a national level.

summary Rethinking Comprehensive Design—the 19th International Conference on Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA 2014)—emphasises a cross-disciplinary context to challenge the mainstream culture of computational design in architecture. It aims to (re)explore the potential of computational design methods and technologies in architecture from a holistic perspective. The conference provides an international forum where academics and practitioners share their novel research development and reflection for defining the future of computation in architectural design. Hosted by the Department of Design, Engineering and Management at the Kyoto Institute of Technology, CAADRIA 2014 presents 88 peer-reviewed full papers from all over the world. These high-quality research papers are complimented by 34 short work-in-progress papers submitted for the poster session of the conference. The conference proceedings were produced by a motivated team of volunteers from the CAADRIA community through an extensive collaboration. The 88 full papers rigorously double-blind reviewed by the dedicated International Review Committee (consisting of 74 experts), testify to CAADRIA’s highly respectable international standing. Call for abstracts sent out in July 2013 attracted 298 submissions. They were initially reviewed by the Paper Selection Committee who accepted 198 abstracts for further development. Of these, 118 full papers were eventually submitted in the final stage. Each submitted paper was then assessed by at least two members of the International Review Committee. Following the reviewers’ recommendations, 91 papers were accepted by the conference, of which 88 are included in this volume and for presentation in CAADRIA 2014. Collectively, these 88 papers define Rethinking Comprehensive Design in terms of the following research streams: Shape Studies; User Participation in Design; Human-Computer Interaction; Digital Fabrication and Construction; Computational Design Analysis; New Digital Design Concepts and Strategies; Practice-Based and Interdisciplinary Computational Design Research; Collaborative and Collective Design; Generative, Parametric and Evolutionary Design; Design Cognition and Creativity; Virtual / Augmented Reality and Interactive Environments; Computational Design Research and Education; and Theory, Philosophy and Methodology of Computational Design Research. summary This paper presents the results of research and development of Building Energy Simulation (BES) visualization methods. In this effort the authors used Building Information Modeling (BIM) Authoring Tools’ Application Programming Interface (API) to visualize BES results in BIM. We also used an external database to store and manage the object-based simulation results from a BES tool. Based on these methods, we created a prototype: Building Energy Performance Visualization (BEPV), which translates information from the result database to the Energy Performance Indicator (EPI) parameter in BIM. Using the prototype, when BIM models are created for building design, the building energy performance can be expressed visually as color-coding on the BIM, allowing users to see energy flows directly. The developed prototype lets architects use BIM as a common user interface for building design and performance visualization, and may improve their designs in early stages.

summary The Paresite - The Environmental Summer Pavilion designed for reSITE festival, is a möbius shaped structure, built from torsed pine wood planks in triangular grid with half cm thin pine wood triangular sheets that provide shadow and evaporate moisture in dry weather. The sheets, cut in a tangential section, interact with humidity by warping themselves, allowing air circulation for the evaporation in arid conditions. The design was accomplished in Grasshopper for Rhino in combination with Rhino and afterwards digitally fabricated. This interdisciplinary project involved students from the Architectural Institute in Prague (ARCHIP) and the students of the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Sciences at the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague (FLD CZU). The goal was to design and build a pavilion from a solid pine wood in order to analyse its material properties and reactions to the environment and to accommodate functions for reSITE festival. The design was prepared within half term studio course and completed in June 2013 on Karlovo Square in Prague where it hosted1600 visitors during festival weekend.

summary This paper presents an interdisciplinary work done at the Museum Oteiza near Pamplona, Spain during 2012 and 2013. The main goal is the use of low cost devices that allows natural interaction, Virtual and Augmented Realities to get the general public closer to the works and concepts of Oteiza through interactive serious games. The most difficult Oteiza’s concepts to understand are those related with the empty space or with time & space. We propose three different activities, shaped as serious game, that use the whole body to interact and play with these concepts. The result is a facility that has been installed at the entrance of the Museum and that can be used for free, before or after a visit to the museum. These activities were presented to 4 experts in Oteiza and the results are discussed. In addition, we gathered more comments after several groups of children tried the application in the museum.

Interdisciplinary work between students and teachers from two Latin American universities, makes this a unique project of technological art in the region. Experience suggests questions at all three levels of the hermeneutic cycle: prefiguration; configuration and reconfiguration when compared to traditional ways of doing and thinking in art and design.

summary This paper examines the application of innovative and interdisciplinary collaboration methods that emerged from the rapidly developing field of information technology and its intersection within the realm of design and architecture. These events, also referred to as hackathons, have risen in popularity in recent years (Artiles & Wallace, 2013) and stem from a design response for the increasing demand for accelerated design decisions within the field of architecture. This paper examines the potential of hackathons as a platform for rapid development of design ideas into prototypes within a time constraint of 24 hours. The paper explores the hackathon as a robust foundational element for pedagogical approaches rooted in interdisciplinary collaboration. Using a case-study research methodology, this paper probes the framework of the event, the outcomes, and the lessons learned. As this paper demonstrates, the hackathon required participants to identify and explore shifting territories through interdisciplinary teamwork to arrive at innovative solutions. In this setting, the format of the hackathon serves as a vibrant territory that enables a concrete theoretical contribution to design pedagogy, CAAD education, and collaborative professional practice.

summary Designing the Negative was the title of a Master Studio that took place at the Institute of Architecture and Media of Graz University of Technology during the summer semester of 2012. Students designed and fabricated prototypes of customized concrete formwork as part of their studio assignment. The studio theme forced students to think about digital fabrication with parametric tools in a hands-on fashion. Using robotic technology and hot-wire cutting, students worked with the robot’s constraints (size of the robot’s arm, robot’s axis and tool’s restrictions) to design complex curved elements that could serve as formwork (the negative) for cast concrete elements (the positive). The students were asked to design a production strategy for their cast concrete elements as well as the application of said elements in an architectural scheme. The student projects confirmed the value of a pedagogy that takes on research-relevant questions in an interdisciplinary studio setting and engages students in a process that is best described as digital crafting: it simultaneously addressed the conceptual and technical as well as the material and tactile aspects of digital fabrication and design.

The hacker culture highlighted dynamic relations that connect people, information, tools and matter. This approach has suggested meaningful speculations about the future of architecture education and practice.

summary In a context of a slow uptake of the Building Information Modeling (BIM) methodology in the Flemish region, we present the results of an educational research project, carried out over 4 semesters, in a multi-disciplinary, cross-campus collaboration. This project fosters an improved application of BIM, information management and communication, by organizing building teams involving students from different schools.The project partners collaborated on a shared framework of supportive learning material, collaboration scenarios between teams of students and the integration of digital tools for communication, information management and collaboration in the curriculum.This article, in particular, will elaborate on one of the collaborative exercises, involving architecture and engineering students, using BIM for modeling, information exchange and model evaluation.

summary In recent years, academia has deviated from the lecture-based model to a hybridized system of instruction and experiential learning. Experiential learning aids students in understanding collaborative processes in architectural praxis and exposes them to engaging learning opportunities, a critical component of architectural studio education (Nijholt et al. 2013). During the COVID-19 outbreak, students are barred from accessing on-campus facilities. This causes a redevelopment of curricular delivery and disrupts experiential learning which heavily relies on in-person interaction. It is imperative for instructors to retain experiential learning in the transition to virtual instruction. This paper explores experiential learning within virtual platforms for instruction. Through outlining the implementation of technologies, capitalizing on connectivity, and maximizing opportunity for digital problem solving, the authors posit a framework that other educators may adopt. The paper concludes with a case study of a virtual design-build project, and the various techniques implemented in retaining experiential learning during the pandemic.

summary Nowadays ICT tools are part of the cultural tradition of designers and over time have replaced pencil and paper in design development. The application programs for design are many and for different purposes, but the role and importance of Context often are underestimated. For new tradition, it needs “Context Knowledge Model” based on ontologies for the management of buildings and preservation and enhancement of cultural heritage with technological innovation. Context modeling gives the opportunity to address the management of pre-existing building in a conscious way. The interoperability of data and knowledge of Context is important to analyze the quality of building process. This is based on standard concepts of the project for the recovery and restoration of the buildings starting from knowledge of context. The goal of this research is to exploit information technology to advance and define knowledge of context monitoring, management and maintenance of historic buildings. The representation of context is important to understand physical, social, economic and normative Context in which the building was placed. The process used to analyze Context entities were Ontologies. This theoretical model will be applied to underground archaeological Roman sites, to implement semantic levels in IFC and BIM for building design.

summary Design activity is pervasive as it is increasingly expanding into all sectors and every day it is increasingly difficult to anticipate the often unpredictable changes resulting from new inventions and changes in technology, tools, methods and social customs using current design systems, and at the same time we need to preserve and store knowledge and experiences that can help facing aforementioned problems. The present paper illustrates an innovative Rule Layer overlying existing commercial software in order to model Reasoning and Performance verification Rules to be applied to design instances. The authors developed two different prototypes, one on BIM and one on CAD commercial software in order to validate the proposed approach. Results demonstrate the general system potentials opened up to further research development and deepening.

summary This paper is the result of a research project started in 2007 in our architecture school which aimed to adopt a Blended-Learning approach in teaching CAAD to 3rd year architecture students, while integrating the knowledge produced by our R&D Unit on architectural representation and communication techniques and web applications. We present our main conclusions regarding this strategy’s results and the web applications involved to understand if they acted like catalysts for engaging students with their learning process and for promoting a better communication between them and their teachers. The article shows how this strategy created new forms of interaction making communication between teachers and students easier and giving the latter an active role in the learning process. We start with an introduction to CAAD’s pedagogical strategy; we then describe the strategy and model applied to several case studies and the materials and learning tools used. Finally, we’ll discuss the most significant results and draw the main conclusions. The results highlight how the learning process coming from the Blended-Learning strategy and the use of complementary web applications strengthens the student’s and teacher’s capacity to work in a close relationship while maintaining the student’s active role in the learning process.

summary In this paper we present an application we developed for collaborative sketch sharing within a design process. We review the specific application development process and discuss the features of the application itself. The tool has been tested and used in a design studio setting between two universities located in different countries. We observed that it is suitable for architectural communication, and also allows monitoring of the sketch activity during the design process. This paper also describes application architec- ture and selected technologies. We have furthermore defined multiple groups of applica- tion requirements. Our self-developed application was proven to suit specified needs and overcame previously tested commercial tools.

summary A typical architectural design project proceeds as collaboration among professionals who have different expertise, values and priorities. The collaboration is needed to make designs both rich yet feasible, but the professionally different ways of thinking can also be a block on the way of design development. This paper takes the example of the relationship between developers and architects, who tend to have different evaluation criteria, methods, and processes. A BIM-based tool, A Thousand BIM, is introduced as a means to quickly generate possible building typologies on a given project site, with computation of expected total values expressed in simple financial terms. Its aim is to help a group of heterogeneous professionals to communicate in the same language, articulate criteria and priorities in multiple perspectives, and share rapidly simulated evaluations of schematic design variations. The implemented evaluation process considers construction cost per square foot, land value, and sustainability as well as other soft design values such as views and accessibility. It can take various market data as inputs to cost calculation, and the weight to each of the design values is dynamically adjustable. A professional can explicitly set them, and share the criteria, priorities, and results of value simulations with others in an enhanced collaborative process.

summary One of the challenges faced by design disciplines is how to activate the imagination, motivate and engage students and professors in significant and heuristic learning processes, integrating educative and design technologies in relation to a new epistemological, aesthetic and technical paradigm. A didactic proposal, that encourage a ludic and creative experience of collaborative construction of knowledge, is created starting from the task to imagine, design and build worlds. This article describes the basis, objectives, characteristics and results of the experience carried out in the 2013 Digital Graphics Studio, issued for Architecture and Visual Design students in a public Argentinian University.

summary Quality observatory of new housing was created by a collaborative effort between the University of the Andes and Prodesa (building company). From 2005 to 2014 about 800 new housing projects have been evaluated whose results evidenced quality problems. In 2013, a new housing project, which integrated quality criteria from the quality observatory, was commissioned to Universidad de los Andes by Prodesa. Parametric modeling was proposed and applied as a useful tool in the variables integration and the decision making process, to integrate and guarantee quality.

summary This paper provides a critical overview of some of the fundamental issues regarding the adoption and integration of BIM – both as a method and as a technology – in Architectural education. It aims to establish a common ground for the rationale behind such integration and reflects on the past and present state of the cultural, intellectual, professional and technological context of Architecture. The paper will introduce the core issues to be considered in order to succeed in this challenging and transformational process. It will also introduce a framework for a gradual and progressive adoption of BIM and integrated design in the architectural curriculum.

summary Although we teach BIM since 2006 at the Faculty of architecture at Czech Technical University in Prague, the education has never been fully integrated into the curriculum of the school. In 2013/2014 this changed, and three tracks were initialized to integrate BIM: (1) teaching BIM in the first year; (2) applying BIM in a selected first year design studio; and (3) applying BIM in a selected third year Bachelor graduation design studio. The implementation of the work is described, results are presented, and we draw conclusions for future work.
