summary Academic Libraries (ALs) design concept has been under a changing process, precipitated by both internal needs and external pressures including changes in the societal context of education, the information services and documentation storage requirements. This paper is focused on a model of form and function to assess AL’ in use, in order to explore ways for better understanding their performance. The proposed model was developed within the scope of a wider research project and makes both use of Post-Occupancy Evaluation and of Space Syntax procedures in order to explore how the spatial configuration influences the performance and use of ALs space. It considers ALs building typology as spatial, physical and social systems, by: 1) measuring users satisfaction about how well the space supports their requirements; and 2) providing information on how architecture and spatial design support - enable and generate - flows of information, communication and knowledge.The analysis provides evidence suggesting that ALs’ spatial system influences study performance, patterns of use and co-presence of its users. The results of data inputs point out prospective strategies about space intervention.

summary Various Rapid Prototyping methods have been available for the production of physical architectural models for a few years. This paper highlights in particular the advantages of 3D printing for the production of detailed architectural models. In addition, the current challenges for the creation and transfer of data are explained. Furthermore, new methods are being developed in order to improve both the technical and economic boundary conditions for the application of 3DP. This makes the production of models with very detailed interior rooms possible. The internal details are made visible by dividing the complex overall model into individual models connected by means of an innovative plug-in system. Finally, two case studies are shown in which the developed methods are applied in order to implement detailed architectural models. Additional information about manufacturing time and costs of the architectural models in the two case studies is given.

title Prototyping of an Adaptive Structure based on Physical Conditions

summary Latest advances in digital architectural design enable applications of computation and fabrication strategies for the development of adaptive mechanisms. Adaptive design processes, influenced by environmental and human related conditions, are only developed partially with regard to the design, fabrication, and multi-objective performance based context. The current paper proposes an adaptive design process that investigates the design of a kinetic structure emphasizing material behaviour, embedded technology and computation. In parallel, it allows design proposals to adapt or transform with regard to geometrical configuration and structural behaviour according to external and internal influences. An adaptive hybrid structure is developed at digital and physical prototype level, where its behaviour is examined in real time under the influence of physical conditions. The development is based on a holistic design approach driven by environmental and human activity related conditions, while focusing on the application of elastic materials and embedded technology.

summary This paper proposes a complementary approach for the architectural design studio. By interpreting architecture by means of an interactive (dance) performance as design task it combines architectural theoretical examination with the implementation of new technologies and event realization. This design studio concept integrates scenography, choreography, sound design and event management, providing workshops carried out by external and internal experts to give insight into these disciplines and new tools. The experimental form allows the students to define the specific form within a broad scope, ranging from a dance performance performed by the students themselves to an interactive installation. The focus for the students was on dealing with the diverse input and on the decision-making process and its reflection.

summary Over the past decade, there has been an increasing interest in exploring the capacity of built spaces to respond dynamically and adapt to changes in the external and internal environments. Such explorations are technologically and socially motivated, in response to recent technological and cultural developments. Advances in embedded computation, material design, and kinetics on the technological side, and increasing concerns about sustainability, social and urban changes on the cultural side, provide a background for responsive/interactive architectural solutions that have started to emerge. This paper presents an ongoing design research project driven by an interest in adaptive systems in nature and a desire to explore the capacity of built spaces to respond dynamically. The paper underlines architecture’s inseparable link to technology and projects a vision of architecture that, through its capacity to change and adapt, becomes an integrated, responsive, adaptive and productive participant within larger ecologies.

summary Advancements in weaving, knitting and braiding technologies have brought to surface high-tech and high- performance composite fabrics. These products have historically infiltrated the aerospace, automobile, sports and marine industries, but architecture has not yet fully benefitted from these lightweight freeform surface structures. myThread, a commission from the Nike FlyKnit Collective, features knitted textile structures at the scale of a pavilion. The evolution of digital tools in architecture has prompted new techniques of fabrication alongside new understandings in the organization of material through its properties and potential for assemblage. No longer privileging column, beam and arch, our definition of architectural tectonics has broadened alongside advancements made in computational design. Internal geometries inherent to natural forms, whose complexity could not be computed with the human mind alone, may now be explored synthetically through mathematics and generative systems. Textiles offer architecture a robust design process whereby computational techniques, pattern manipulation, material production and fabrication are explored as an interconnected loop that may feed back upon itself in no particular linear fashion. The myThread Pavilion integrates emerging technologies in design through the materialization of dynamic data sets generated by the human body engaged in sport and movement activities in the city.

summary The project investigates responsive building skin systems that adapt to the dynamic environmental conditions to regulate the internal conditions in a habitable space over different periods of time by exhibiting a state of motion and dynamism. Heat and Light are the primary parameters for regulation, leading to energy efficiency and dynamic spatial effects. Passive and active skins using shape memory alloys and pneumatic actuators are developed through investigations of smart systems that integrate smart materials and smart geometries. The precedents in this domain have rarely dealt with individually controlled multiple parameters of heat and light in a single system, which is attempted in this project. Owing to the complexity of the multi-parametric system, genetic algorithms are developed for system optimization and calibrated with physical prototypes at varied scales. The developed systems are tested against two distinct climatic models- New Delhi and Barcelona, and evaluated for performance, based on heat and light, which are quantified as solar gain and illuminance as principles, and daylight factor for evaluation purpose. The use of genetic algorithms makes the problem solving faster and accurate. New tool-sets are developed in the process by combining various digital tools, to create a real-time feedback and memory loop system.

summary This study presents a digital architectural design tool named “Fuzzy Layout Planner” that helps architects create two dimensional sketchy footprints for their design. The purpose of the tool is to extend limits of early design thinking. It uses fuzzy modeling techniques to adapt the ambiguous design phase. There are several commands in this digital tool to generate and modify layouts. Users can create, move, combine sketchy bubbles to form bigger footprints and see them in action dynamically. The tool offers a manual creation process.

summary This paper outlines generative strategies for the design of structural layout patterns of columns and beams in reinforced concrete structures based on contemporary local construction practice in China. Following an introduction to constraints and opportunities of this new potential context for generative design application, possible generative strategies are proposed and discussed, with a view to their viability within the local context. The proposed strategies are illustrated in terms of geometry, generative sequence and plausibility of construction and discussed in terms of visual and overall structural merit.

summary Since 1960s there were many models for architectural layout planning which formulated design activities as problem-solving. On the other hand, various form-finding models had emerged after 1980s. The former seeks the necessity of architectural modeling as an objective science, while the latter encourages the contingent characters of individual modeling. This paper proposes a method of integrating the two families of models. A commutation channel is defined thus every member in one family can work with any member in the other. Therefore the models of architectural layouts can “multiple” the models of 3D forms, which leads to rich variety of architectural structures and forms. The method is implemented and tested in Java.

summary Heuristic computation techniques have been used in a wide range of fields, demonstrating their capacity to solve highly complex optimization problems. This article presents the most common techniques and their extension into the multi-objective optimization field, and emphasizes in the application of them in structural and architectural design by presenting examples within topics like: topological, shape and dimensional optimization of truss structures, roof optimization for sunlight conditions and area minimization, grid structures, façade design, life cycle cost and environmental impact, energy efficiency and construction costs, morphogenetic structural optimization for shell structures, acoustical optimization, evolutionary architectural design, architectural layout design optimization, RC frames optimization, and land use zoning, within others. Finally, the conclusion leads to the recognition of heuristic computation not only as an optimization tool, but also as an important component of a design methodology for creating innovative, creative, efficient, well performing, and aesthetically pleasant architectural/engineering objects.

summary This paper introduces a design methodology and a toolkit developed as a parametric CAD program for configurative design of architectural plan layouts. Using this toolkit, designers can start plan layout process with sketching the way functional spaces need to connect to each other. A tool draws an interactive bubble diagram and a set of tools reveal feasible geometric interpretations of the proposed bubble diagram in terms of plan layout graphs. Offering real-time Space Syntax analyses at the same time, the tools provide feedback on the spatial performance, which is translatable into the likely social performance of the plan layout patterns.

summary Residential land development requires compact and intelligent growth in order to conserve land, especially in countries such as China with a large population but little usable land for built environment. This should not be done at the expense of public green space. Living density is an important issue that cannot be avoided in the urbanization process. This research uses Spatial Form Compact as the goal of trying to support the residential regulatory plan. A prototype site has been chosen to optimize the layout. Suppose the type of residential building had been decided and FAR is given as a premise. This method allows the arrangement of residential buildings to be compact and leads to more available space for concentrated green area, for example parks or other facilities. The BL-based method of genetic algorithm and VB program is used for the optimization and calculation of the prototype. The arrangement of residential buildings which is done by computer in this period is only used to explore the relationship between FAR and reasonable building layout. In order to guide the real construction of the building, the site plan should be done further elaborately under the guidance of regulatory plan by the developer and urban planner.

With iceberg 3d structure layout design of an ocean park as example, this paper explores the application of VR and BIM technologies in complex construction projects. In the paper, the laser scanning technology, point cloud processing, BIM model creation based on the Revit software and the specific applications of VR technology are described and discussed.

summary Gottfried Semper, in his 1851 text The Four Elements of Architecture, famously classifies architecture into four elemental parts: the hearth, the roof, the enclosure, and the mound, describing the role of the last three to be the “defenders of the hearth’s flame against the three hostile elements of nature (Semper 2011).” Modernity has witnessed the role of enclosure evolve to that of a sealed envelope, or one which meticulously separates the ‘natural environment,’ from the internally regulated environment as part of modern comfort. The post-modern advent of the rain-screen has further separated the layer of exteriorized cultural expression from the structuring envelope, removing the ornamental aspect of Semper’s enclosure, from the enclosing layer. This habit of casting the natural processes out of our building envelopes has resulted in the rapid depletion of space for biodiversity within our cities. Joyce Hwang in her essay “Living Among Pests,” has suggested that the needed reconnection of biodiversity with our urban buildings will force a re-examination of “facade articulation to take on more responsibilities. Ornament will become performative” (Hwang 2013).
