summary We present learning experiences related to Textile Design in postdigital environments, linked to disrupted practices from Design Thinking perspective, with the intention to translate it into sustainable didactic strategies. Methodologically from the workshop, we develop design and graphic’s databases from textiles and digital printing methods, different media’s applications, prototyping and identity simulation of their own business, which includes branding, communication pieces and packaging. We recognize innovative and meaningful responses from students regarding exploration, idea’s generation and prototype’s creation. As teachers, like craftsmen, we have tried to link material culture, tacit knowledge, resistances, social interaction and production methods.

summary The traditional or classical architecture of India is an interesting subject for exploration from different perspectives.Taking pavilions described in Mayamatam as a representative of the traditional or classical architecture of India and analyzing them from the viewpoint of pattern recognition and mathematics encouraging results are obtained.A pattern is seen in the development of the design of pavilions and has been coded alpha-numerically. Based on the system of development and employing computer applications software is created to design pavilions, which follow the principles of traditional architecture.This software has multiple benefits. It can be used as a teaching aid for the subject ‘history of Indian Architecture’. For architectural conservationists and heritage enthusiasts it offers itself as a tool to help in visualization and digital reconstruction. For architects it can be a means for making structures of recent times, which have the essence of traditional architecture.The aim of this paper is to highlight the methodology for preparing this software and demonstrating its output.

summary As disciplines converge and new capabilities are developed for programmable materials and self-assembly across length scales and industrial applications, designers will need new models for understanding the fundamental principles within this new paradigm. This paper outlines the key ingredients for self-assembly through a number of recent projects including the BioMolecular Self-Assembly and Chiral Self-Assembly projects. Further possibilities of non-deterministic self-assembly will be highlighted through asymmetrical units, nucleus models and hierarchical assemblies. Finally, opportunities for high-yield self-assembly and future applications for manufacturing and construction scenarios will be outlined. Self-assembly offers a glimpse into a future world of highly programmable, intelligent materials that promise far more adaptive, resilient and efficient built environments.

summary Tugite and Shiguchi are traditional architectural techniques of Japan, which connect materials without the use of nails or adhesives. Tugite is a technique to connect materials to augment the lack of length of available materials. Shiguchi is a technique to connect materials at an angle. With a firm basis in this tradition and the craftsmanship involved, we are aiming to apply these traditional joining techniques in digital fabrication. We expect that the application of Tugite and Shiguchi will refine digital fabrication methods and that the value of Tugite and Shiguchi will be rediscovered in the era of digital fabrication. This research was conducted in three steps. The first step was to research all patterns of Tugite and Shiguchi to define its foundation and typology. The second step was to modify Tugite and Shiguchi shapes to allow application in a digital fabrication environment, and also to add functionality. The third step was to create Lego-sized blocks with Tugite and Shiguchi to verify their applicability outside of the field of architecture.

summary This research describes a theoretical framework for making water-sensitive architectural fabrics based on an examination of the subtle moisture controls in vernacular architecture. It explores a workflow for the articulation of environmental forces in material microstructure and how these can be amplified at an architectural scale. The interaction between moisture and material properties is modeled using physics simulations in Processing, offering a method to manipulate fibre configurations for new construction logics. The research is illustrated through parallel explorations in computationally generated fibre configurations and multi-scalar textile prototypes. The research aims to demonstrate the potentials of technology transfer from traditional knowledge to contemporary material manipulations.

summary Advancements in weaving, knitting and braiding technologies have brought to surface high-tech and high- performance composite fabrics. These products have historically infiltrated the aerospace, automobile, sports and marine industries, but architecture has not yet fully benefitted from these lightweight freeform surface structures. myThread, a commission from the Nike FlyKnit Collective, features knitted textile structures at the scale of a pavilion. The evolution of digital tools in architecture has prompted new techniques of fabrication alongside new understandings in the organization of material through its properties and potential for assemblage. No longer privileging column, beam and arch, our definition of architectural tectonics has broadened alongside advancements made in computational design. Internal geometries inherent to natural forms, whose complexity could not be computed with the human mind alone, may now be explored synthetically through mathematics and generative systems. Textiles offer architecture a robust design process whereby computational techniques, pattern manipulation, material production and fabrication are explored as an interconnected loop that may feed back upon itself in no particular linear fashion. The myThread Pavilion integrates emerging technologies in design through the materialization of dynamic data sets generated by the human body engaged in sport and movement activities in the city.

summary This paper describes the theoretical framework behind the development of a series of knitted prototypes inspired by the biomimetic model of the hygromorph. Three moisture responsive pieces are described which use the inherent properties of wood veneer as an actuator incorporated into complex knitted forms constructed from linen and wool. These textile/veneer assemblies are environmentally responsive, transformable and constructed from natural, sustainable materials. This represents a new interpretation of shape changing textiles for architecture. The work illustrates the potential of designing hierarchically organised structures where functionalities are incorporated at different levels of material fabrication. The paper argues that the implementation of textile materials and processes offers the potential for the development of environmentally responsive architecture through the development of shape changing textile/veneer assemblies.

title The Return of Nature as an Operative Model: Decoding of Material Properties as Generative Inputs to the Form-Making Process

summary The abandonment of nature as an architectural model and the redefinition of the relationship between form and material were two of the main consequences of industrialization for modern architecture. While nature was replaced by the machine as a model for architecture, industrial production suppressed the craftsman's knowledge of the material and the associated techniques once essential to the form-making process. Thus, the replacement of nature as a model implied that principles once related to natural processes started to be seen as industrial values, i.e., the economy of means stopped being recognized as a quality related to natural form-making processes and became a demand of industrial production. Nowadays, material properties and nature are being reintroduced into architecture with the help of digital technologies; that is, the return of nature though computation. As a result, nature has become an operational model as opposed to the visual or iconic one it used to be; its inner qualities and processes are being decoded in order to inform the form-making process and foster innovative digital ornamentation.

title Tree-Structure Canopy:A Case Study in Design and Fabrication of Complex Steel Structures using Digital Tools

summary This paper describes and reflects on the design and manufacturing process of the Tree-Structure canopy for the WestendGate Tower in Frankfurt upon Main, completed early 2011.The project investigated fabrication and assembly principles of complex steel structures as well as the integration of contemporary computational design, engineering, optimization and simulation techniques in a collaborative design approach. This paper focuses on the notion of modular standardization as opposed to non standard customized components. It also engages with issues relating to digital production tools and their impact on construction cost, material performance and tolerances. In addition it examines the reconfiguration of liability during a planning and construction process, an aspect which can be strongly determined by fabrication companies rather than the architect or designer.This paper is written as a reflection on the complete building process when contemporary digital tools are used from design through to fabrication. It studies both the generation of the steel structure as well the ETFE cushion skin. It reports on a collaborative project, where the main author was responsible for the canopies design, parameterization, digitalization and fabrication, as well as for the dissemination of the outcomes and findings during the design and realization process.As such it represents an example of research through design in a contemporary and evolving field.The canopy received a design award by the Hellenic Architecture Association.

summary Since the almost simultaneous publication of Kevin Lynch and Jane Jacobs´ seminal and pioneer urban manifestos, the discipline has been increasingly permeated by what could be rightly called the phenomenological impulse. While sharing methodological principles, however, they represent two very distinct approaches to the study of urban matters, a distinction rooted on their chosen object of study. The drawing of this distinction constitutes this research´s point of departure. Its fundamental aim is to help further the development of what we characterize as the Jacobs´s lineage of urban thought. To this end, the paper outlines methodological rudiments for the development of a methodological tool that would allow the beginning of a systematic study of the patterns of people´s presence and absence in urban space (streets). We call it Urban Polaroid. This work is part of a government funded (fondecyt 11110450) project.

summary This ongoing investigation aims to learn from nature novel material organizations and structural systems in order to develop innovative architectural system. We developed a multidisciplinary approach, using scientific analysis and design research and prototyping. We focus on the study of a “living fossil” fish, whose armor system is so efficient it has remained almost unchanged for millions of years. We investigate its morphological characteristics, its structural properties, the assembly mechanisms and the underlying material properties in order to derive new principles to design new enhanced structural systems. We use micro computerized tomography and scanning electron microscopy to observe microstructures, parametric design to reconstruct the data into digital models and then several 3D printing technologies to prototype systems with high flexibility and adaptive capabilities, proposing new gradual material interfaces and transitions to embed performative capabilities and multifunctional potentials.

summary This paper will articulate on how the intrinsic principles of gem making could be applied in architectural form finding. It will speculate that the technical accumulation of expertise and knowledge in this crafty technique could be implemented algorithmically. This robust and efficient process could provide solutions for architectural design problems. It will conclude that faceting, as we can observe it in jewelry making and lamp design, produces facets that are not just reacting to an underlying geometry, but also add expression and articulation to an object.

summary Knowledge based design is acquired through one's exposure to a large number of projects and establishes a set of patterns regarding organizations, techniques, procedures, heuristics, priorities and preferences. Over time, designers develop a distinctive set of principles that represent their own individual methods of addressing design problems. Creative designers not only design the solutions, they also design the problems. Although their repertoire of resources includes explicit declarations regarding recognizable problem types, physical components, design rules, or evaluation methods of different aspects, design decisions are also driven by vast amounts of tacit considerations derived from professional experience. Designers make such decisions balancing design intent and technical requirements in a very efficient and synthetic manner. We designers know what we do, but it is not so clear how we do it. This conference is an invitation to engage in a dialogue concerning how Design Knowledge can be represented and manipulated within digital environments.

summary The paper presents a model-based methodology to support multidisciplinary collaboration for the application of photovoltaic systems to buildings. It focuses on the representation of domain specific knowledge necessary for the design of novel PV racking and mounting structures, based on principles of multi-functionality and functional integration. The proposed representation is based on a language for modeling functional requirements in terms of causal behaviors. These behavioral models provide common ground not only for multidisciplinary design, but also for the elaboration of performance metrics and verification procedures for evaluation of design alternatives. The paper concludes with a discussion on the potential of Model-based approach to support innovation in Design.

summary Biomimicry, where nature is emulated as a basis for design, is a growing area of research in the fields of architecture and engineering. The widespread and practical application of biomimicry as a design approach remains however largely unrealized. A growing body of international research identifies various obstacles to the employment of biomimicry as an architectural design method. One barrier of particular note is the lack of a clear definition and methodology of the various approaches to biomimicry that designers can initially employ. This paper attempts to link biological principles with computational design in order to present a design methodology that aids interested architects within the preliminary design phase.
