title Field condition and the robotic urban landscapes
source FUTURE TRADITIONS [1st eCAADe Regional International Workshop Proceedings / ISBN 978-989-8527-03-5], University of Porto, Faculty of Architecture (Portugal), 4-5 April 2013, pp. 217-228
summary The paper explores the concept of the ‘field condition’ in recent urban discourse and its implication with respect to emerging technologies in the domains of robotics and AI. The author argues that the notion of ‘field condition’ as one of ‘loosely bound aggregates characterized by porosity and local interconnectivity defined not by overarching geometrical schemas but by intricate local connections’1, has inherent limitations in its contemporary manifestation. The paper then discusses the discourse of the field theory in architecture & urbanism in context with recent developments in swarm robotics, modular self reconfiguring robotic systems and distributed intelligence. Recent design proposals that explore the idea of the city informed by such technologies are also analyzed. The author then argues for a ‘Robotic Urban Landscape’ that builds on the notion of the field as a possibility in the near future. In such a theoretical construct the city consists of a field of ‘nomadic’ mobile technological artifacts that respond to a complex set of parameters and act as a collective whole. The ‘robotic field condition’ in this respect has both physical and virtual dimensions, is both machinic and biological, and has fuzzy binary condition, effectively dematerializing its identity as part of the larger whole. Such fields of mini robots, which collectively are able to perform complex task systems, get intrinsically linked to the city fabric and result in a new urban ecology. The impact on the urban condition as a result of these ‘robotic fields’ of loosely bound mobile artificial constructs that respond in the mathematical matrix of urban ecology and socio economic parameters, is also discussed. Lastly the author suggests a provocative likelihood of a ‘singularity’ moment in light of these developments and the need to relook at contemporary architectural discourse

title Contextual customization of design process. Design through the digital and the material
source FUTURE TRADITIONS [1st eCAADe Regional International Workshop Proceedings / ISBN 978-989-8527-03-5], University of Porto, Faculty of Architecture (Portugal), 4-5 April 2013, pp. 205-216
summary In contemporary world, digital technologies have initiated new architectural languages and have eased the way to communicate them directly from initial design phase to production facilities, allowing for the construction of complex geometries with the use of ever evolving techniques and tools. When the emergence of a substance depends on the material behavior, the design interest shifts towards the ‘formation’ instead of the ‘final form’. Regarding these the design procedures will be discussed from the premise where architecture will be perceived through an evolution process that deals with the coherent variables of elements and shifting parameters within a context. However, there are crucial questions about its application in the contexts which have lower access to contemporary technologies although digital technology has already influenced almost every aspects of the culture of the respective context. Besides, the huge production cost has limited its adaptability in many under developed and developing countries where the construction field relies mainly on traditional and low-tech methods. The paper is an effort to give attention on exploration of the new-found freedoms of material computation in close connection with the respective context by inventing new design processes, material applications and custom devices. It is the time to experiment with flexible, mobile and low-cost fabrication methods applicable to different scenarios while achieving the complexity of the contemporary architectural ge¬ometries. Thus an equal focus has to be given to speculate about projects that are site-specific, custom¬ized and adapted to local climatic conditions and technical know-how, in areas that traditionally have limited access to new technologies.

title Digital ontology and the architectural monstrous
source FUTURE TRADITIONS [1st eCAADe Regional International Workshop Proceedings / ISBN 978-989-8527-03-5], University of Porto, Faculty of Architecture (Portugal), 4-5 April 2013, pp. 71-82
summary This paper aims to connect a reading of Francisco Goya’s painting Vuelo de Brujo with Marco Frascari’s metaphorical exploration of the idea of ‘monstrosity’ in architecture in Monsters of Architecture (1991). It also seeks to connect these works to contemporary forms of digital monstrosity and the proposition that the existential anxiety explored within current digital representations of the monstrous have both their basis in the technical apparatus within which they are created, and current thinking on material realism in ontology. Given the emergence of complex forms of ‘life’ within Cellular Automata studies and the speculations regarding digital ontology stemming from Stephen Wolfram’s New Kind of Science, the paper also asks what the consequences of large-scale expansions of these capabilities will entail in a post-Singularity scenario.

title The evolution of representation in architecture
source FUTURE TRADITIONS [1st eCAADe Regional International Workshop Proceedings / ISBN 978-989-8527-03-5], University of Porto, Faculty of Architecture (Portugal), 4-5 April 2013, pp. 27-38
summary This paper proposes an overview on the relation between representation, technology and architecture methodologies. Focusing on disposable digital tools, it reaches the new tools of virtual immersive 3D architectural environments. It also addresses the concepts of operative 3D, augmented reality and robotic manufacturing, thus introducing a system of digital tools that enables users to step inside a 3D virtual reality environment, built as a virtual building prototype, and to use all data instructions directly with the construction industry. This paper questions therefore the traditional processes and perceptions in architecture and draw present and future advanced state-of-the-arts methodologies. As a result, future and tradition in architectural design methods are challenged. Recognizing the permanent tensions between traditional and innovative processes, possible methodological changes are put in perspective, namely the fields of technical representation, building construction and design processes.

title Digital Temples: a shape grammar to generate sacred buildings according to Alberti’s theory
source FUTURE TRADITIONS [1st eCAADe Regional International Workshop Proceedings / ISBN 978-989-8527-03-5], University of Porto, Faculty of Architecture (Portugal), 4-5 April 2013, pp. 63-70
summary The research presented further is part of the Digital Alberti research project, which aims to determine the influence of Alberti’s treatise on Architecture, De re aedificatoria, on the Portuguese Renaissance architecture, through the use of a computational framework. One of the project tasks entailed the translation of the treatise’s textual descriptions concerning the morphological, proportional and algorithmic principles of the sacred buildings into a shape grammar. Subsequently a computational model was developed, in order to proceed to the derivation of examples of the same language. This article discusses the use of analytical shape grammars to undertake an architectural analysis, as well as the fact of the source of this grammar and correspondent architectural language to be a text instead of a set of buildings and designs. It reviews the methodology to implement the shape grammar and describes the several stages of development, following the interpretation of treatise into a consistent set of shape rules, by defining their spatial relations, parameters and conditions. It also reviews the implementation of this knowledge into a generative parametric computer program through visual programming language Grasshopper.

title Traditions based on context. How context ontologies can help archaeological sites.
source FUTURE TRADITIONS [1st eCAADe Regional International Workshop Proceedings / ISBN 978-989-8527-03-5], University of Porto, Faculty of Architecture (Portugal), 4-5 April 2013, pp. 105-114
summary Nowadays ICT tools are part of the cultural tradition of designers and over time have replaced pencil and paper in design development. The application programs for design are many and for different purposes, but the role and importance of Context often are underestimated. For new tradition, it needs “Context Knowledge Model” based on ontologies for the management of buildings and preservation and enhancement of cultural heritage with technological innovation. Context modeling gives the opportunity to address the management of pre-existing building in a conscious way. The interoperability of data and knowledge of Context is important to analyze the quality of building process. This is based on standard concepts of the project for the recovery and restoration of the buildings starting from knowledge of context. The goal of this research is to exploit information technology to advance and define knowledge of context monitoring, management and maintenance of historic buildings. The representation of context is important to understand physical, social, economic and normative Context in which the building was placed. The process used to analyze Context entities were Ontologies. This theoretical model will be applied to underground archaeological Roman sites, to implement semantic levels in IFC and BIM for building design.

title Geometry of the body
source FUTURE TRADITIONS [1st eCAADe Regional International Workshop Proceedings / ISBN 978-989-8527-03-5], University of Porto, Faculty of Architecture (Portugal), 4-5 April 2013, pp. 51-62
summary Contemporary digital architectural design is characterized by an understanding of geometry as logico-algebraic text out of which architectural form emerges through the manipulation of data. Such formalistic and operative utilization of geometry is ignoring the perceptive dimension of geometry. By looking at the etymological roots of mathematics another non-technical reading of geometry can be uncovered that relates geometry back to bodily experience and the question of spatial orientation. This opens up the question of orientation within computational geometry and re-introduces the body into contemporary discourse of architecture.

title A blended-learning approach in CAAD. Enhancing an architectural design studio experience by using collaborative web applications.
source FUTURE TRADITIONS [1st eCAADe Regional International Workshop Proceedings / ISBN 978-989-8527-03-5], University of Porto, Faculty of Architecture (Portugal), 4-5 April 2013, pp. 83-94
summary This paper is the result of a research project started in 2007 in our architecture school which aimed to adopt a Blended-Learning approach in teaching CAAD to 3rd year architecture students, while integrating the knowledge produced by our R&D Unit on architectural representation and communication techniques and web applications. We present our main conclusions regarding this strategy’s results and the web applications involved to understand if they acted like catalysts for engaging students with their learning process and for promoting a better communication between them and their teachers. The article shows how this strategy created new forms of interaction making communication between teachers and students easier and giving the latter an active role in the learning process. We start with an introduction to CAAD’s pedagogical strategy; we then describe the strategy and model applied to several case studies and the materials and learning tools used. Finally, we’ll discuss the most significant results and draw the main conclusions. The results highlight how the learning process coming from the Blended-Learning strategy and the use of complementary web applications strengthens the student’s and teacher’s capacity to work in a close relationship while maintaining the student’s active role in the learning process.

title The contribution of Tomas Maldonado to the scientific approach to design at the beginning of computational era. The case of the HfG of Ulm.
source FUTURE TRADITIONS [1st eCAADe Regional International Workshop Proceedings / ISBN 978-989-8527-03-5], University of Porto, Faculty of Architecture (Portugal), 4-5 April 2013, pp. 39-50
summary Nowadays the use of computational design processes in architecture is a common practice which is currently recovering a set of theories connected to computer science developed in the 60`s and 70`s. Back then, such pioneering experiences were carried out by an interest in employing scientific principles and methodologies in architectural design, which, with the help of computers, were developed in Research Centres mainly located in the USA and the UK. Looking into this period, this paper investigates the relevance of the German design school of the Hochschule für Gestaltung of Ulm to the birth of computation in architecture. Even though there were no computers in the school, this paper argues that the innovative pedagogies introduced by a group of distinct professors built clear foundations that can be understood as being at the basis of further computational approaches in architecture. This paper focuses on the remarkable work done by Tomas Maldonado. His contribution was paramount in the emergence of analogical ways of computer design thinking. This analysis ultimately wants to emphasize how the HfG Ulm’s role and its scientific approach have paved the way for the onset of the computational era in architecture.

title Learning from vernacular
source FUTURE TRADITIONS [1st eCAADe Regional International Workshop Proceedings / ISBN 978-989-8527-03-5], University of Porto, Faculty of Architecture (Portugal), 4-5 April 2013, pp. 115-120
summary By looking at time-tested recurrent design patterns drawn from Portuguese vernacular settlements, the present research tries to address the problem of developing sustainable urban solutions for scattered low density territories throughout Portugal. The research departs from the hypothesis that Portuguese vernacular settlements contain morphological characteristics that can be captured and reused in new designs: this may be particularly useful for rethinking extensive suburban territories’ densification conditions, in order to enhance both their consistency and sustainability. Urban sprawl and uncontrolled space consumption have often hastened the problem of territorial sustainability, that’s the reason why completing, restructuring and enhancing dispersed built environments is of paramount importance in order to foster both cultural and economical sustainability in contemporary Portugal. This project ultimately aims at contributing towards the definition of design procedures and planning tools for the re-urbanization of extensive urban fabrics. One of the major objectives is developing a decision making support tool for generating meaningful and coherent interventions in dispersed urban fabrics which could foster connectivity, integration and quality of life, by doing so this work tries to propose a novel methodology that could prove to be valuable in different contexts, even outside Portugal.

title Parametric urbanism as digital methodology. An urban plan in Beijing
source FUTURE TRADITIONS [1st eCAADe Regional International Workshop Proceedings / ISBN 978-989-8527-03-5], University of Porto, Faculty of Architecture (Portugal), 4-5 April 2013, pp. 121-132
summary Evolution and innovation in architecture are intensely related to the rise and developments of technology. Within this context, it is possible to recognize how in recent decades this milieu has fostered the development of new methodologies for urban design and architectural practice, as is, for example, the Parameterization. This paper is focused on the subject of Parametric Urbanism: discussing / questioning the emergence of this new architectural methodology; addressing the factors that contributed to its appearance; and seeking to understand whether the parametric approach has benefits and whether it may or may not be a solution or of assistance to urban planning. The paper provides a brief literature review focused on parametric urbanism and then it presents a practical case study of parametric urbanism: an Urban Plan in Beijing, developed in an academic context, at the University École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in 2012. Having as base diverse examples of parametric urbanism, it is tried to identify/justify decisions defining principles and application guidance for this project. The conclusion presents the final considerations based on opposing the case study with the theoretical approach, seeking to clarify whether this new kind of urban design methodology, Parametric Urbanism, is or not viable.

title Knowledge-based methodology for architectural robotics fabrication. Real time impact assessment through a process flow analysis software
source FUTURE TRADITIONS [1st eCAADe Regional International Workshop Proceedings / ISBN 978-989-8527-03-5], University of Porto, Faculty of Architecture (Portugal), 4-5 April 2013, pp. 229-236
summary The main goal of the project is to generate a framework for a knowledge-based-methodology (KBM) within a parametric software. This is accomplished through a combination of the design software and robot simulation with real-time assessment based on a process-flow-diagram (PFD) structure that compiles the main environmental parameters of the manufacture process. The intention is to create a methodology to directly report the impact of the manufacture of a specific design, from the materials embodied energy to the energy consumption of each step. This framework provides valuable information which may monitor the developer towards alterations to increase the CAD/CAM performance. In the context of this paper, this methodology was applied in the conceptual design and manufacture of a housing structural insulated panel prototype using parametric design software and robotic equipment. The purpose is to generate a quasi-automated design process linked with real-time analysis and assessment of the fabrication process, offering real time environmental and cost analysis of a panelized structure house manufacture logic. The suggested methodology outputs information to compare and optimize the manufacture outline, and supports the screening and assortment of appropriate tool paths or combination of fabrication tools based on environmental/cost data, user-specified requirements and context characteristics.

title Kinetic decorative ornaments using parametric camshaft mechanism for adaptive building skin
source FUTURE TRADITIONS [1st eCAADe Regional International Workshop Proceedings / ISBN 978-989-8527-03-5], University of Porto, Faculty of Architecture (Portugal), 4-5 April 2013, pp. 183-192
summary In most of Indonesian traditional architecture, are seen using decorative ornaments on its building skin. Nowadays those traditional decorative ornaments are no longer used because it is considered old-fashioned and have no technical function that does not match the design of modern buildings, so the traditional characteristics and locality of the building is lost. This paper offers a development of the building skin that aims to revive a new expression of traditional decorative elements by applying digital technology as well as having an adaptive function. Most of the adaptive building skin uses kinetic techniques in order to make its formation transformable. This paper proposes a camshaft mechanism system to transform the pattern of traditional ornament that uses pre-programmed analysis data of environmental changes to parametrically drive the number of rotation phase and length of nose (Lobe Lift) that generates the shape of camshaft. Furthermore, this shapes drives the transformation of the basic pattern. In conclusion, this paper has developed a prototypical tool that facilitates the new approach to kinetic decorative ornaments on building skin.

title Future Traditions. Rethinking Traditions and Envisioning the Future of Architecture Through the Use of Digital Technologies
source 1st eCAADe Regional International Workshop Proceedings [ISBN 978-989-8527-03-5], University of Porto, Faculty of Architecture (Portugal), 4-5 April 2013, 250p.
summary The debate around the impact of digital technologies in architecture is usually centered on the discovery of new possibilities for the discipline. However, the past and traditions can also play an important role in the future of architecture. After 50 years of technological assimilation, architects have today the necessary distance to embrace a critical reflection about how computers support the dynamics of continuity or rupture in the discipline. Thus, to understand how digital technologies can contribute to rethink traditions and to inspire the future of architecture became the main goal of the 1st eCAADe Regional International Workshop dedicated to the theme of “Future Traditions”, hosted by the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto, Portugal.

summary This work has its goal in clarifying hypothesis in using search computational power in the form of genetic algo-rithms to find geometric solutions while designing architecture. We will start by roughly explaining the fundamen-tals of this type of algorithms and its mechanics and ensue by exploring some uses of this technology in architecture. A clear separation between the traditional self-builder and the architect as a profession, in their ways of designing, cannot be denied. Christopher Alexander has a clear view on the mechanics behind these processes, in which repeti-tion over time drives perfection and self-awareness in error detection. Some years before Alexander, computation brought technological possibilities of brute force solution finding, only to be “evolved” into evolutionary strategies – as predicted by Turing. Bringing biology and genetics concepts into the fields of computation, Holland creates ge-netic algorithms, a simulation of the laws of Mendel and Darwin applied to solutions finding. Architecture design, in its pursuit of finding good project solutions, started using these computing strategies recently. Over the last years, the complexity of design levels in which these algorithms have been applied has increased steadily, giving us a glimpse of the future of computing architecture.

summary The process of adopting digital simulation and design tools into an existing procedural framework is tedious in that it requires a significant investment by the users. Software manufactures aim to create interfaces that can easily be understood and put into practice. That being said, other factors, such as the lack of climatic data, deter the quick absorption into professional practice. In a country such as Colombia, which is in a zone near the equator and is characterized by drastic differences in topography, the preprogrammed climatic data is insufficient. Even when figures are provided or manually configured, parallel simulations between various software packages reveal significant discrepancies in terms of estimated performance. Wary of this, yet optimistic of the potential of parametric modeling, the authors have developed and implemented a methodological procedure which first articulates the design problem, then develops the parametric model and lastly applies this model. Upon reviewing more than a hundred variations, one configuration was selected as the highest performer. A prototype has been built and is currently being monitored by other researchers with the aim of rectifying the divergence in computed data by various software packages with real numbers. This paper will explain how the parametric design process was developed and the methodology employed in search of an efficient and effective brise soleil system.

source FUTURE TRADITIONS [1st eCAADe Regional International Workshop Proceedings / ISBN 978-989-8527-03-5], University of Porto, Faculty of Architecture (Portugal), 4-5 April 2013, pp. 155-170
summary The project investigates responsive building skin systems that adapt to the dynamic environmental conditions to regulate the internal conditions in a habitable space over different periods of time by exhibiting a state of motion and dynamism. Heat and Light are the primary parameters for regulation, leading to energy efficiency and dynamic spatial effects. Passive and active skins using shape memory alloys and pneumatic actuators are developed through investigations of smart systems that integrate smart materials and smart geometries. The precedents in this domain have rarely dealt with individually controlled multiple parameters of heat and light in a single system, which is attempted in this project. Owing to the complexity of the multi-parametric system, genetic algorithms are developed for system optimization and calibrated with physical prototypes at varied scales. The developed systems are tested against two distinct climatic models- New Delhi and Barcelona, and evaluated for performance, based on heat and light, which are quantified as solar gain and illuminance as principles, and daylight factor for evaluation purpose. The use of genetic algorithms makes the problem solving faster and accurate. New tool-sets are developed in the process by combining various digital tools, to create a real-time feedback and memory loop system.

summary This paper aims to develop a tool entitled “Visual Architectural Topology (VAT)” for encoding topological information within a case library. VAT can annotate design objects and their topological in-formation within the unstructured information of a design case. By applying an ontology-based topological validation mechanism, VAT aims to establish a visual language for representing the “topological knowledge” of architectural design objects in a case library. The pur-pose of VAT is to extend the knowledge representation ability of a de-sign case library, and to provide a foundation for development of a design-assistance tool performing the conversion and processing among semantic and geometric design information.

summary This paper presents a performance driven computational design methodology through introducing a case on parametric structural design. The paper describes the process of design technology development and frames a design methodology through which engineering, -in this case structural- aspects of architectural design could become more understandable, traceable and implementable by designers for dynamic and valid performance measurements and estimations. The research further embeds and customizes the process of topology optimization for specific design problems, in this case applied to the design of truss structures, for testing how the discretized results of Finite Elements Analysis in topology optimization can become the inputs for designing optimal trussed beams or cantilevers alternatives. The procedures of design information exchange between generative, simulative and evaluative modules for approaching the abovementioned engineering and design deliverables are developed and discussed in this paper.

summary A rigid spatial structure represents a three-dimensional structural system in which the size of the singular planar elements is very small related to the whole construction. In this paper we will do investigations of quadrilateral patterns and we will propose an analytical method for designing structural rigid folding with quadrilateral patterns following geometrical surfaces of different topology. Our method offers folding structures with four fold lines meeting in one node which allows a simpler solution of join connections and assembling of the whole spatial and structural system. As the physical characteristics of paper can lead to all kinds of wrong conclusions it is necessary to use CAD tools in addition to scale models, where the entire folding element is reconstructed and its geometric characteristics are controlled. This kind of control reflects on the scale model. Models are then adjusted, examined and built to reach certain conclusions that are once more tested in CAD software.
