summary This paper is the result of a research project started in 2007 in our architecture school which aimed to adopt a Blended-Learning approach in teaching CAAD to 3rd year architecture students, while integrating the knowledge produced by our R&D Unit on architectural representation and communication techniques and web applications. We present our main conclusions regarding this strategy’s results and the web applications involved to understand if they acted like catalysts for engaging students with their learning process and for promoting a better communication between them and their teachers. The article shows how this strategy created new forms of interaction making communication between teachers and students easier and giving the latter an active role in the learning process. We start with an introduction to CAAD’s pedagogical strategy; we then describe the strategy and model applied to several case studies and the materials and learning tools used. Finally, we’ll discuss the most significant results and draw the main conclusions. The results highlight how the learning process coming from the Blended-Learning strategy and the use of complementary web applications strengthens the student’s and teacher’s capacity to work in a close relationship while maintaining the student’s active role in the learning process.

summary The promise of robotic fabrication as an enabler for mass-customization in Architecture has been hindered by the intricate workflow required to go from parametric modelling to CNC fabrication. The lack of integration between highly-specialized proprietary software, normally required to operate the machines, and most of the design tools constitutes a major limitation. One way to tackle this constraint is by developing simple tools that directly link parametric modelling to robotic coding. Accordingly, “Fisac Variations” develops an uninterrupted digital workflow from form-generation to robotic fabrication. This innovative approach to Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing was tested by studying and reengineering a specific historic construction system -Miguel Fisac’s Bones System was used as a case study- and by enabling it to address problems of contemporary architectural agenda such as flexibility, variability and mass-customization. The proposed workflow threads form-finding, structural analysis, geometric definition, CNC code generation and digital fabrication within the same open-source computational environment. In this way, this innovative procedure aims to increase design freedom while ensuring fabrication feasibility. This paper describes background research, concept, form-finding, construction process, methodology, results and conclusions.

summary For the built environment's transformation we are confronted with complex dynamics connected to economic, ecologic and demographic change (Czerkauer-Yamu et al., 2013; Yamu, 2014). In general, cities are complex systems being a "heterogeneous mosaic" of a variety of cultures and functions, characterised by diverging perceptions and interests (ibid). The juxtaposed perceptions and interests in relation to ongoing spatial processes of change create a particularly complex situation. Thus, for planning processes we are in need of approaches that are able to cope not only with the urban complexity but also allow for participatory processes to empower citizens. This paper presents the approach of using Digital Twins in virtual reality (VR) for civic engagement in urban planning, enriched with quantitative and qualitative empirical data as one promising approach to tackle not only the complexity of cities but also involve citizens in the planning process.

summary The paper presents a novel approach on the design of complex forms by re-formulating the relationships between form, structure, material, fabrication and construction. It is proposed that current design models are supplemented by feedback-enabled frameworks, integrating material properties, fabrication constraints and construction logistics. As such, a series of input parameters based on industry standards, filtered through physical testing and digital simulations, feed a central computational model. The outcome is weighed against a set of objectives towards an optimum design solution which embodies construction logic while ultimately opposing costly inflated ad-hoc solutions. Within the above framework and as part of a broader research conducted at [ARC], this paper illustrates a design methodology implemented at the case study of 'God's Eye', winning entry of Sukkahville 2013 International Design Competition. It is further supported that a high tech, interdisciplinary design process based on efficient material assemblies allows for a complex, yet efficient end result, through low tech affordable construction.

summary During the creative process, designers constantly evaluate the relations between objects in space. BIM aids this process by providing a modeling platform where objects are embedded with information, which can be extracted on demand. The object Interaction Query (oIQ) proposes a novel way to query BIM models, not only for geometric properties and dimensions, but also about the relations among the components. By including the queried objects’ context and interrelations as part of the computation, the prototype tool is able to provide feedback on complex interactions and conflicts in the design environment. The oIQ approach and its implementation are developed as integral parts of the design process, allowing users to perform customized queries through a GUI in which users can apply their knowledge and design preferences to the model’s evaluation.

summary This paper outlines an approach to adaptive residential design explored through recent research and an executed prototype, the North House project (2007-2009), undertaken through an interdisciplinary collaboration of researchers and students from the University of Waterloo, Ryerson University and Simon Fraser University in concert with professional and industry partners. This project aimed to develop a framework for the delivery of adaptive detached residential buildings capable of net-zero energy performance in the temperate climate zone, or the near north. Within this project, the term “adaptive” is developed across several tracts of conceptualization and execution including site and climatically derived models for building material composition and envelope ratios, environmentally-responsive kinetic envelope components, intelligent HVAC controls and interactive interface design aimed at producing co-evolutionary behaviors between building systems and inhabitants. A provisional definition of adaptive architecture is outlined to address this range of considerations that calls into question the stable image of domestic architecture and its relationship to energy and contemporary assumptions regarding sustainable design. This paper also outlines computational approaches to design optimization, distributed building systems integration and the human-controls interfaces applicable to the home’s ecology of physical and information technologies.

summary Quality, according to Pirsig’s universal statements, does not belong to the object itself, nor to the subject itself, but to both and to their interactions. In architecture it is terribly true as we have a Building Object and Users that interact with it.The problem we approach here, renouncing at the impossible task of modelling the actor’s “libero arbitrio”, focuses on defining a set of occurrences, which dynamically happen in the built environment. If organized in a proper way, use process knowledge allows planners/designers to represent usage scenario, predicting activity inconsistencies and evaluating the building performance in terms of user experience.With the aim of improving both, the quality of buildings and the user experience, this research explores a method for linking process and product ontologies, formalized to support logic synchronization between software for planning functional activities and software for authoring design of infrastructures.

summary Space syntax is supposed to be an objective method for evaluating spatial configurations. Its contribution to a design process is dependent on the designer’s estimation. The paper describes a generative approach to finding particularly good interventions based on space syntax analyses of axial maps. More precisely, a case study was undertaken through applying such a strategy to improve and connect a segregated street network of an informal settlement to its neighbourhood. Controlling and redirecting movement in slums may cause positive effects. This research is based on and inspired by a consulting project by the company Space Syntax Limited for the Municipality of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in which the consulting company designed a regeneration program for declining informal settlements. summary The use of solar energy in buildings requires defining proper systems according to different urban typologies. This paper presents a strategy for assessment in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and a parametric analysis of an detached housing typology in Building Information Modeling (BIM), which demonstrates an integrated approach to estimate solar energy potential, applied to the context of Concepción, Chile. Residential areas are identified with different energy consumption and solar capture in roofs, walls or outside space recorded in a urban GIS, and checks the architectural implementation of a roofing system in residential buildings through an integrated evaluation and design in BIM.

summary This paper describes the work in progress of a research on Neurodesign and a previously described process entitled Augmented Iterations [Cutellic and Lotte, 2013]. Within this broader field of research and design explorations, we will focus on describing and comment results obtained in the neuroselection of shapes among a continuously varying flow of visual stimuli. Eventually, these results will lead to the identification of a non-linear and non-convergent potential for the human-based computation of iterative and generative designs.

summary Digital workflows from the design to the production of buildings have received significant recent attention in architectural research. The need for both integrated systems for design collaboration (Boeykens and Neuckermans, 2006) and clear and flexible communication flows for non-standard fabrication outcomes have been identified as fundamental (Scheurer, 2010). This paper reports on the development of a digital “design system” for the design and prototyping of an acoustic enclosure for meetings in a large open work environment, theFabPod. The aim was to keep this system open for temporal flexibility in as many aspects of the finalisation of the design as possible. The system provides novel examples of both integrated collaboration and clear communication flow.  (1) Acoustics is included as a design driver in early stages through the connection of digital simulation tools with design models. (2) Bi-directional information flows and clear modularisation of workflow underpins the system from design through to fabrication and assembly of the enclosure. Following the completion and evaluation of the FabPod prototype, the openness of the system will be tested through its application in subsequent design and prototyping iterations. Design development will respond to performance testing through user engagement methods and acoustic measurement.

summary This paper investigates the use of explicit structures of information in architectural design. Particularly, it approaches the use of diagrams related to cybernetics and information theory in experimental practices in the 1960’s and 1970’s. It analyses the diagram of cybernetic control proposed by the cybernetician Gordon Pask for the Fun Palace, the diagrams produced by the utopian architect Yona Friedman in the conceptual description of the Flatwriter program and Christopher Alexander’s diagrams and his theories of Synthesis of Form and Pattern Language. Finally it establishes a brief parallel between current domestication and use of dataflow programming with the cybernetic diagrams, highlighting differences in their complexity approach.

The Tarrafa Hacker Club members shared their collaborative environment with the students and tutors throughout the academic experiment. The hacker culture highlighted dynamic relations that connect people, information, tools and matter. This approach has suggested meaningful speculations about the future of architecture education and practice.

summary A method for quantifying ambient surveillance is presented, which is based on probabilistic-possibilistic perception. The human surveillance of a scene through observing camera sensed images on a monitor is modeled in three steps. First immersion of the observer is simulated by modeling perception of the scene from the camera locations using probabilistic perception approach. The perceptions are thereafter combined by means of probabilistic union, simulating simultaneous watching of the scene from multiple viewing positions. As third step the combined perceptions are converted to a possibility using triangular possibility density function. The latter step accounts for the fact that surveillance takes place via monitor depiction and not directly as perception of the actual physical scene. The method is described and demonstrated by means of an ambient surveillance application involving three cameras. The resulting possibility of perception is compared to the case of using two cameras, quantifying the added value of additional camera as to surveillance.

summary The research represented in this paper proposes to reinvestigate the relationship between structure and appearance through a performative analysis of textured stainless steel, as verified through full-scale prototyping. The work takes a scientific design approach while incorporating a computational workflow that is informed by the material’s physical parameters, and draws a connection between the scales of molecular composition to large-scale geometric systems.Furthermore, the work attempts to provide evidence for thin-gauge textured metals as a high performance and adaptive material, by identifying structural rigidity and particular specular quality as inherent characteristics born from the texturing process. In addition, through close collaboration with the sponsoring manufacturer of textured stainless steel, we are able to gain access to material expertise and large-scale fabrication equipment not readily available to designers, thereby forging a mutually beneficial relationship surrounding the research.

summary In relation to cities, wind is one of the less studied meteorological parameter. Constant vertical rate variations from meso scale to micro scale, altogether with strenght, direction, velocity of the urban canyon, makes the wind a complex subject of study. To achieve this, a methodological strategy that addresses the wind's multi dimensionality was raised. It was aplied to Punta Arenas, the southernmost city in the world, where most of the time winds come 90% from the same direction with speeds reaching 128 km/h. Wind's constant directional behavior allows the recognition of areodynamic phenomena produced, in the first instance, for the wind profiles influenced by the urban rugosity and then, at morphologycal level, the aerodynamic behavior of the layered fluids over the building bodies, generating a regular pattern between solids and fluids. The strong winds in cities with cold climate influence the use of public spaces, which, not being designed under this conditions, do not develop proper levels of thermal comfort.

summary A method for fusion of perceptions is presented. It is based on probabilistic treatment of perception, where perception quantifies the chance an unbiased observer sees an environmental object, and the associated probability can be interpreted as degree of awareness for the object. The approach uniquely accounts for the fact that final realization or remembrance of a scene in the brain may be absent or elusive, so that it is subject to probabilistic considerations. For objects that are to be perceived from multiple viewpoints, such as a sculpture in a museum, or a building in its urban context, the probabilistic approach uniquely defines the fusion of perceptions. This is accomplished by carrying out the probabilistic union of events. The computation is presented together with its geometric implications, which become rather intricate for multiple observers, whereas the computation is straight forward. The method is exemplified for two applications in architectural design at different scales, namely interior and urban design, indicating the generic nature as well as the large application potential of the method.

summary Outdoor thermal comfort for pedestrians becomes important issues in urban planning affecting everyone’s daily lives. Mean Radiant Temperature (T mrt ) is one of the most important parameters in micro climate. In this study, we built a computerised model with variable and typical building types. Then a radiation model SOLWEIG was used to simulate pavements’ T mrt spatial variations. We analysed and discussed the simulation results by comparing different building types. We used RayMan to find some relationship between thermal comfort index PET or PMV. Our finding can act as a reference for architects and planners to make design decisions on quantifying the thermal comfort in specific urban environment and their building types.

summary The dynamics of a physics-based algorithm which acquires its complex organization through a number of localised interactions applied over a prescribed network can be described as a self-organised system. This in turn has the capacity to define explicit form and space based upon behavioural computational processes with an embedded structural logic. This paper discusses the way in which physics based algorithms can be used to inform the organisation of a compressional structure in a case study. Its structure is based on Hooke’s law of elasticity; which establishes a three dimensional catenary logic through a number of localised interactions applied over an entire network. This is applied to a project with specific constraints to site, boundary conditions and maximising solar gain whilst maintaining structural rigidity. The methodological approach describes the design to assembly process in which the project has been developed. This includes the applied generative design tools in order to establish the self-organised logic, the form finding process, the techniques of design documentation, the fabrication process and the logistics of construction and assembly.
