summary In design studio courses, assessment helps to improve teaching practice and student learning. Output-Mapping model considers a practical working method, applicable to teaching, based on records of students' outcomes. Visualization is a key component; iconographic resources aid understanding and observation of the territory conquered by each participant throughout the course. The next phase of the project addresses the need to manage large amounts of information generated by a statistical model for assessment. Visualization media used so far have proven limited. A new web system may dynamically visualize relationships between students' records more immediately, precisely and in a network.

summary Nowadays the use of computational design processes in architecture is a common practice which is currently recovering a set of theories connected to computer science that were developed in the 60’s and 70’s. Such pioneering explorations were marked by an interest in employing scientific principles and methodologies many developed in Research Centres located in the US and the UK. Looking into this period, this paper investigates the relevance of the German design school of the Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG) Ulm to the birth of computation in architecture. Even thought there were no computers in the school. It is argued that the innovative pedagogies and some distinct professors have launched clear foundations that can be understood as being at the basis of further computational approaches in architecture. By describing and relating the singular work by Tomas Maldonado (educational project), Max Bense (information aesthetics) and Horst Rittel (scientific methods), this paper describes the emergence of analogical ways of computational design thinking. This analysis ultimately wishes to contribute for inscribing the HfG Ulm at the cultural and technological mapping of computation in architecture.

summary This paper frames walkability as a performance indicator for urban spaces and critically addresses some of the existing evaluation methods. It introduces alternative strategies and tools for enabling the collective evaluation of walkability and discusses how experiences of the citizens can possibly lead to a social construct of walkability. This discussion is elaborated by a pilot study which includes exploratory research, social-geographic web services and heat maps. Using these tools and methods, it was possible to derive various experiential and environmental spatial qualities, extract problems and identify problematic areas. From these we have learned that walkability may serve as a fruitful conversation framework and a participatory research concept. Furthermore, we were able to develop ideas for solutions to design and planning problems.

summary Previous research dealt with the problem of successfully approaching the combination of multiple, marginally compatible, historical and other forms of digital abstract data. The initial challenge, from a designer’s point of view, was to define and create the database for the Museum of the City of Volos (MuCiV) that will contain these seemingly incompatible data to a formulation collaborated with a geo-referenced information visualization system. This paper aims to go a step further by defining and implementing such an information visualization system. Thus, visual structures digitally representing a variety of non-spatial data, as well as the ways that these structures can interact, are investigated. It is argued that the results of this research can have interesting implementations to the museum program; by organizing in alternative ways its content and context and by facilitating the dissemination of information to the public through interactive multimodal exhibits.

summary This paper provides a state-of-the-art of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in the building industry. Two methods were used to find this new knowledge: a series of interviews with leading architecture, engineering, and software professionals; and a series of tests in which CFD software was evaluated using comparable criteria. The paper reports findings in technology, workflows, projects, current unmet needs, and future directions. In buildings, airflow is fundamental for heating and cooling, as well as occupant comfort and productivity. Despite its importance, the design of airflow systems is outside the realm of much of architectural design practice; but with advances in digital tools, it is now possible for architects to integrate air flow into their building design workflows (Peters and Peters 2018). As Chen (2009) states, “In order to regulate the indoor air parameters, it is essential to have suitable tools to predict ventilation performance in buildings.” By enabling scientific data to be conveyed in a visual process that provides useful analytical information to designers (Hartog and Koutamanis 2000), computer performance simulations have opened up new territories for design “by introducing environments in which we can manipulate and observe” (Kaijima et al. 2013). Beyond comfort and productivity, in recent months it has emerged that air flow may also be a matter of life and death. With the current global pandemic of SARS-CoV-2, it is indoor environments where infections most often happen (Qian et al. 2020). To design architecture in a post-COVID-19 environment will require an in-depth understanding of how air flows through space.

summary This paper presents the work carried out by a multidisciplinary team of researchers, gathering knowledge in architecture, drawing, geometry, mathematics and computation. The research was directed in order to create a computational tool for architectural visualization - a new digital perspectograph - with the use of a new theoretical and operative approach to linear perspective. A new kind of projection surface, a parametric one, is added to the perspective concept under current tools. The mutations of this surface are explained and a set of graphical outputs is shown. A workshop with architecture students took place to help test and validate the concept and the computational prototype.

summary Recently, as the changes in the economic structure, service industries have become an important factor of the urban regeneration.  Especially, Knowledge-based industry is garnering attention as an engine of urban economics. Urban present condition such as location of Knowledge-based industry visualization and analysis are main issues for people as well as policymakers, urban planner and designers. This paper presents analysis of the spatial characteristics of the distribution and spatial concentration of Knowledge-based Industry, specifically Business-support Services. Furthermore, this paper is intended to describe examination of the visual relation between spatial conditions and configuration by visualization using GIS and space syntax analysis. This paper shows that business support services are likely to concentrate in specific places. Results of this study show that each type of business support services is concentrated in different districts. Results show that creative design industries are located near the park, riverfront, and such third places with high integration and connectivity with the street by space syntax analysis. Results show that concentrated districts of creative design companies at inner block show relatively high local integration values and connectivity. This study elucidates how industrial concentration and spatial configuration can be ascertained visually.

summary The architectural documentation is a means of perpetuating the memory for future generations, traditional techniques applied in most studies conducted in Brazil, using direct measurements on the monument. The Photogrammetry, like lifting technique, allows metric and morphological recovery of an object without direct contact with it, and as a product of 2D - orthophotos. The focus of this work is the automatic vectorization of orthophotos, presenting experiments done with software for automatic feature extraction from orthophotos, aiming to test tools and procedures that can speed up the process for generating drawings refund.

title Sphere Mapping: a method for responsive surface rationalization

summary The method proposed in this project addresses the parametric manipulation of a given pattern to respond directly to a parametric surface. The research attempts to propose a method for attaching fixed sized objects to a free flowing surface or "blanket." The model can be used to interrogate a series of shapes and forms with the same componentry. Continuing the research of Kevin Rotheroe, Yale University and founder of FreeForm Design. Rotheroe and his students developed a series of studies in material and surface properties. By utilizing a proven pattern, the proposed method sets parameters derived from the formal properties of the original pattern and produces a new pattern that is responsive to the curvature of a complex surface. The workflow developed in this research consists of a complex blending of tools in Rhino Grasshopper and Gehry Technologies Digital Project. The intent is to achieve the aesthetics and structure offered by Rotheroe's original research and to add a responsive precision that provides an accurate adaptation of the pattern based on curvature of a specific computationally defined surface.

summary Mass customization is pointed as a means of improving a company’s competitiveness, which is an essential trait in Europe’s economic situation of today. This paper reports a mockup implementation of the mass customization paradigm to ceramic tableware design, through the use of shape grammars, parametric modelling and rapid prototyping. Focus is emphasized on the initial development of a parametric shape grammar as a design system, operating on curved surfaces and solids. Mapping operations are suggested for dealing with the formal complexity of these shapes. This initial academic experiment poses as a first step into the development of a mass customization system that is expected to meet industry standards.

summary Computational embryogenies are a special kind of genotype to phenotype mapping process widely used inexplorative evolutionary systems as they provide the mechanism for generating more complex solutions. This paper focuses on how designers explore embryogenies for specific design scenariosthrough an adaptive-iterative process.The process is demonstratedfor a complex project to generate a prototypical urban farm in Singapore. It is shown that by employing an adaptive-iterative process, the embryogeny can be made progressively more complex and less abstract, thereby allowing the exploration to be guided by the designer.

summary At present, computer aided design (CAD) software has proven ill equipped to manage the spatial variations in material properties. Most digital design packages employ a surface modeling paradigm where a solid object is that which is enclosed by a set of boundaries (known as boundary representations or “B-rep” for short). In surface models, material representations are often treated as homogenous and discrete. Yet, natural materials are capable of structures where the variability of material within a volume is defined at a multiplicity of scales and according to various functional criteria. With the advent of new 3D printing techniques, a new possibility emerges—allowing new multi-material composite objects to be fabricated in a single build volume with a high degree of dimensional accuracy and repeatability. However, a big limitation facing complex high resolution digital fabrication comes from the software’s inability to represent or handle material variability. This paper proposes a new digital interface for working with multi-material distributions at a variety of scales using a rasterization process. Beyond the immediate benefit of precise graduated control over the material distribution within a 3D printed volume, our interface opens new creative opportunities by enabling the use of existing image processing techniques (such as filtering, mapping, etc.) which can be applied to three-dimensional voxel fields. Examples are provided which explore the potential of multi-scale material distributions.

summary The paper presents the findings of a systematic literature review of approximately 200 scientific sources. It is designed with the aim to identify the current benefits and factors of high performance in Architecture, Engineering, Construction (AEC) since the introduction of Building Information Modelling (BIM). We formed and confirmed two main propositions associating the performance of the AEC to the use of BIM. The mapping of the current impact and benefits of BIM showed that the role of the managers, suppliers, owners and authorities is underestimated, as well as the initiation and use stage of project development. At the same time, the performance in the AEC industry can be improved by an array of possibilities where IT research and policy-making authorities contribute – from establishing new collaboration protocols until improving existing or creating new BIM tools.

summary As technology affine urban landscape researchers,working in Asian mega cities, we roam through crowded and narrow, widely informal city layouts, where we apply digitalfieldwork equipment and conduct design work. We use low cost cameras and camera drones, tools that had been developed asgadgets for outdoor freaks or plaything for nerds. In this paper, we describe recent advances in the development of amethod of on-site data and image gathering, which allows the processing of concrete 3D models of informal city spaces. Thevisual quality of these models is still moderate, but the resulting three-dimensional spatial puzzlemakes a widelyinaccessible and undocumented piece of city terrain visible, understandable and designable. The software used is free.

summary Digital technologies not only have made information accessible but also have exponentially generated new data. The continue growth of urban GIS and pervasive computing is helping us analyze human interactions in unprecedented ways. Yet, when researching urban sites, the students’ task is conventionally limited to the analysis of aggregate spatial data that does not reveal the invisible forces acting upon the site. The limitation of this approach is further evident if students cannot visit the site. This paper explores the role of information visualization to uncover uncommon site forces and to supplement students’ lack of embodiment with far distanced sites.
