summary Rethinking Comprehensive Design—the 19th International Conference on Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA 2014)—emphasises a cross-disciplinary context to challenge the mainstream culture of computational design in architecture. It aims to (re)explore the potential of computational design methods and technologies in architecture from a holistic perspective. The conference provides an international forum where academics and practitioners share their novel research development and reflection for defining the future of computation in architectural design. Hosted by the Department of Design, Engineering and Management at the Kyoto Institute of Technology, CAADRIA 2014 presents 88 peer-reviewed full papers from all over the world. These high-quality research papers are complimented by 34 short work-in-progress papers submitted for the poster session of the conference. The conference proceedings were produced by a motivated team of volunteers from the CAADRIA community through an extensive collaboration. The 88 full papers rigorously double-blind reviewed by the dedicated International Review Committee (consisting of 74 experts), testify to CAADRIA’s highly respectable international standing. Call for abstracts sent out in July 2013 attracted 298 submissions. They were initially reviewed by the Paper Selection Committee who accepted 198 abstracts for further development. Of these, 118 full papers were eventually submitted in the final stage. Each submitted paper was then assessed by at least two members of the International Review Committee. Following the reviewers’ recommendations, 91 papers were accepted by the conference, of which 88 are included in this volume and for presentation in CAADRIA 2014. Collectively, these 88 papers define Rethinking Comprehensive Design in terms of the following research streams: Shape Studies; User Participation in Design; Human-Computer Interaction; Digital Fabrication and Construction; Computational Design Analysis; New Digital Design Concepts and Strategies; Practice-Based and Interdisciplinary Computational Design Research; Collaborative and Collective Design; Generative, Parametric and Evolutionary Design; Design Cognition and Creativity; Virtual / Augmented Reality and Interactive Environments; Computational Design Research and Education; and Theory, Philosophy and Methodology of Computational Design Research. summary The wood - humidity interaction of solid wood has been tested through generations on Norwegian traditional panelling. This concept has been further explored by Michael Hensel and Steffen Reichert with Achim Menges on plywood and laminates in basic research. Plywood or laminates are better programmable but they are less sustainable due to the use of glue. This research focused on predicting the performance of solid wood in tangential section which is applied to humidity-temperature responsive screen for industrial production. With the method Systems Oriented Design, the research evaluated data from material science, forestry, meteorology, biology, chemistry and the production market. Themethod was introduced by Birger Sevaldson in 2007 with the argument that the changes in our globalized world and the need for sustainability demands an increase of the complexity of the design process. (Sevaldson 2013)Several samples has been tested for its environmental interaction. The data has been integrated in parametric models that tested the overall systems. Based on the simulations, the most suitable concept has been prototyped and measured for its performance. This lead to another sampling of the material whose data are the basis for another prototype. Ray 2 is an environmental responsive screen that is airing the structure in dry weather, while closing up when the humidity level is high, not allowing the moisture inside.

summary In order to design adaptable systems, the requirements include flexible models to generate a range of alternative configurations, analytical engines to evaluate performance, and well-defined selection criteria to identify suitable options. In most cases, design processes driven by performance concentrate on environmental or structural parameters; fabrication often remains disconnected from the generative process. Nonetheless, as design-to-fabrication methods become more robust, it is possible to extend the digital process to introduce fabrication variables to the definition of the project. The main focus of the research presented in this paper is the development of a digital and material workflow that connects design, structural and climate-specific topics (such as sun lighting and water drainage) toward producing a range of efficient structural and spatial assemblies.A case study serves as the main support for this investigation. Miguel Fisac’s “bones” is a light-weight roof system developed during the 1960’s, which had a very well-calibrated structural, natural-lighting, drainage and construction performance, as well as a highly refined spatial output. The system, despite its intelligence, lacked the flexibility possible today: using digital technologies, it can adapt to a significantly wider range of applications. Using “bones” as a starting point, this research develops a design-to-fabrication workflow that attempts to move forward tools, material systems and processes to enable an adaptable tectonic system.This paper describes the background research, concept, form-finding, construction process, methodology, results and conclusions of the investigation.

In response to this need, the 18th International Conference on Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA 2013) brought together contributions that engage with open systems in all aspects of architectural and urban design: open with respect to the scale of the design objectives and the context, from a building component within a building system to a neighbourhood or city within its urban and rural context; open with respect to the domains being considered, from planning to sustainable performance of a building or city; open with respect to the collaboration of disciplines and participants, from ad-hoc brainstorming to a rigorous process of consultation and feedback; open with respect to design methods and techniques, from physical modelling to digital prototyping; open with respect to design models and representations being adopted, from a parametric exploration to an ontological delineation considering Building Information Modelling, Built Environment Modelling or City Information Modelling; open with respect to the tools and applications being adopted, despite interoperability issues, from modelling to simulation and assessment; open with respect to the learning approach being adopted, from informal interaction and sharing to formal design education; open with respect to the open source approach being adopted in research and development, in order to gather community involvement and use. The conference was held 15-18 May 2013 at the Department of Architecture, School of Design and Environment, at National University of Singapore.By focusing on the theme of Open Systems, CAADRIA 2013 aimed to explore all these aspects and more, and raise awareness to the need of breaching disciplinary boundaries and reaching creative communities at all levels of expertise, by pooling resources, knowledge and practices, and integrating them through the adoption of open systems.

summary The process of adopting digital simulation and design tools into an existing procedural framework is tedious in that it requires a significant investment by the users. Software manufactures aim to create interfaces that can easily be understood and put into practice. That being said, other factors, such as the lack of climatic data, deter the quick absorption into professional practice. In a country such as Colombia, which is in a zone near the equator and is characterized by drastic differences in topography, the preprogrammed climatic data is insufficient. Even when figures are provided or manually configured, parallel simulations between various software packages reveal significant discrepancies in terms of estimated performance. Wary of this, yet optimistic of the potential of parametric modeling, the authors have developed and implemented a methodological procedure which first articulates the design problem, then develops the parametric model and lastly applies this model. Upon reviewing more than a hundred variations, one configuration was selected as the highest performer. A prototype has been built and is currently being monitored by other researchers with the aim of rectifying the divergence in computed data by various software packages with real numbers. This paper will explain how the parametric design process was developed and the methodology employed in search of an efficient and effective brise soleil system.

summary The Garifuna are a group of people that live on the northern coast of Honduras and the coast of Belize. They have a very distinct and vibrant culture. Minority cultures are currently absorbed by mainstreamed cultures and the Garifuna ethnicity is directly influenced by this phenomenon. In this research it is of special concern to encapsulate Garifuna vernacular architecture by means of shape grammars. The research provides a clear documentation of the grammars implemented in Grasshopper, as well as discusses about the issues of embedding shape grammars in the Rhino/Grasshopper environment.

summary This ongoing investigation aims to learn from nature novel material organizations and structural systems in order to develop innovative architectural system. We developed a multidisciplinary approach, using scientific analysis and design research and prototyping. We focus on the study of a “living fossil” fish, whose armor system is so efficient it has remained almost unchanged for millions of years. We investigate its morphological characteristics, its structural properties, the assembly mechanisms and the underlying material properties in order to derive new principles to design new enhanced structural systems. We use micro computerized tomography and scanning electron microscopy to observe microstructures, parametric design to reconstruct the data into digital models and then several 3D printing technologies to prototype systems with high flexibility and adaptive capabilities, proposing new gradual material interfaces and transitions to embed performative capabilities and multifunctional potentials.

The purpose is to reflect on the possibilities of production and applications of these types of hybrid models, highlighting them as recurring elements of design practice after the rise of new technologies of information and communication, and prototyping and digital manufacturing. By adopting the model as an object of research, we propose to expand the field of reflection on the incorporation of several digital technologies in the design process, specifically aspects of three-dimensional and graphical representation.

summary Industrial robots controlled by parametric design software and visual programming environments are gaining popularity in the research and use of non-conventional construction processes in architecture. Process automation which can be personalized through variable components promises to become an industry standard with similar cost structures to current pre-fabrication industrial processes. In order to incorporate competencies from non-serial variable architectural modular design, an initial teaching initiative (Advanced Architectural Design Studio – USM) was developed in Latin América. The strategy employed is based on incorporating concepts and instruments of Construction & Design Automation for CAD/CAM processes with a Six Axis Robotic Arm (KUKA KR125/2).

summary The nature of the architectural design process can be described along the lines of the following representational devices: the plan and the model. Plans can be considered one of the oldest methods to represent spatial and aesthetic information in an abstract, 2D space. However, to be used in the design process of 3D architectural solutions, these representations are inherently limited by the loss of rich information that occurs when compressing the three-dimensional world into a two-dimensional representation. During the first Digital Turn (Carpo 2013), the sheer amount and availability of models increased dramatically, as it became viable to create vast amounts of model variations to explore project alternatives among a much larger range of different physical and creative dimensions. 3D models show how the design object appears in real life, and can include a wider array of object information that is more easily understandable by nonexperts, as exemplified in techniques such as building information modeling and parametric modeling. Therefore, the ground condition of this paper considers that the inherent nature of architectural design and sensibility lies in the negotiation of 3D space coupled with the organization of voids and spatial components resulting in spatial sequences based on programmatic relationships, resulting in an assemblage (DeLanda 2016). These conditions constitute objects representing a material culture (the built environment) embedded in a symbolic and aesthetic culture (DeLanda 2016) that is created by the designer and captures their sensibilities.

summary This paper presents a datacentric perspective to historical building conservation using digital media. In particular we explore a workflow based on large volumes digital data acquired via 3D scanning technology, virtual restoration using 3D modelling and physical artefact reconstruction using 3D printing technology. We offer an alternative perspective in contrast to the prevalent approach of reverse engineering or geometric rationalization via parametric design technology; highlight the research and design opportunities as well as the challenges of the approach.

summary This paper outlines a research project that explores the participation in, and perception of, advanced technologies in architectural professional practice through a sociotechnical lens and presents empirical research findings from an online survey distributed to employees in five large-scale architectural practices in Sydney, Australia. This argues that while the computational design paradigm might be well accepted, understood, and documented in academic research contexts, the extent and ways that computational design thinking and methods are put-into-practice has to date been less explored. In engineering and construction, technology adoption studies since the mid 1990s have measured information technology (IT) use (Howard et al. 1998; Samuelson and Björk 2013). In architecture, research has also focused on quantifying IT use (Cichocka 2017), as well as the examination of specific practices such as building information modelling (BIM) (Cardoso Llach 2017; Herr and Fischer 2017; Son et al. 2015). With the notable exceptions of Daniel Cardoso Llach (2015; 2017) and Yanni Loukissas (2012), few scholars have explored advanced technologies in architectural practice from a sociotechnical perspective. This paper argues that a sociotechnical lens can net valuable insights into advanced technology engagement to inform pedagogical approaches in architectural education as well as strategies for continuing professional development.

summary Free-form surfaces construction has been limited to the possibilities of graphical and constructive control. In a few years we have seen an important development of control of the form through digital graphic technology, software and hardware that allowed truly spectacular constructions. A significant researching way not only in architecture, but also in engineering even in sculpture, has been the adaptation of free forms through developable surfaces using different systems, many based on differential geometry. Reinterpreting some topics of projective geometry that allows the use of certain CAD software, jumping from the physical to the digital drawing system, has been developed a method allows the adaptation of free forms through developable surfaces using apparent contours that we can draw over these free form surfaces. Trough using them we can trace two types of developable surfaces as cones and cylinders that are touching the surface tangentially to this contours.

summary This study is concerned with the building thermal performance education in the context of computer application. The project contains the original script coded in Maxscript for use in Autodesk 3ds Max. The tool workflow and functionality focus on the thermal calculations connected with sculpturing manipulation of architectural volume in pre-conception project stages, when detailed project solutions are undefined. The algorithm is based on the manual methods included in the curriculum. The paper also presents a study of software analyzing thermal performance as a justification for the script vision and educational implementation. The script is rather an addition than alternative for existing software, so it does not assume any resignation from more sophisticated products.

summary The aim of this paper is to discuss the role three-dimensional models play in addressing performance issues in virtual reconstructions of the heritage buildings. Heritage visualisation is considered here as a process of representing knowledge about space, time, behaviour, light, and other elements that constitute cultural environments. The author aims to analyse the process of digital reconstruction of heritage buildings and the impact of the decisions taken during its development on the final performance. Based on the examples drawn from practice, various stages of development are discussed, confronted with the principles of London Charter.

summary The complexity of the requirements on buildings is continuously increasing and thus, often confronting designers with interdisciplinary problems, reaching far beyond the traditional challenges and methods of architecture and engineering. Moreover, designers are often required to take decisions, when most of the information and knowledge is still missing or to be generated. In the context of sustainable building design, the re-usability of building elements and the optimisation for exchangeability is crucial for the achievement of two of the main goals: efficient use of material resources and waste reduction. The scope of this work in progress is describing requirements for case-based decision support in order to optimise building element re-usability, create an analysis of explicit re-usability indicators (e.g. “connection liberation”, “modularity” or “life span collision”) and to identify retrieval strategies. A proposal to support decision making processes by retrieving existing design solutions graph representations as well as the use of building information models are also described.

summary This paper presents a performance driven computational design methodology through introducing a case on parametric structural design. The paper describes the process of design technology development and frames a design methodology through which engineering, -in this case structural- aspects of architectural design could become more understandable, traceable and implementable by designers for dynamic and valid performance measurements and estimations. The research further embeds and customizes the process of topology optimization for specific design problems, in this case applied to the design of truss structures, for testing how the discretized results of Finite Elements Analysis in topology optimization can become the inputs for designing optimal trussed beams or cantilevers alternatives. The procedures of design information exchange between generative, simulative and evaluative modules for approaching the abovementioned engineering and design deliverables are developed and discussed in this paper.

summary Spatial design is becoming an increasingly social, participatory and inclusive practice. In the last decade, ordinary people all around the world have started to claim a shaping power over the processes of urbanization; over the ways in which our cities are made and remade (Harvey, 2013). There has been a resurgence in the number of do-it-yourself cooperatives initiated by non-designer citizens, activists, artists and designers. In parallel to these developments, a plethora of social technologies, tools and platforms have been developed to include a variety of stakeholders in the architectural design, urban design, planning and decision-making processes. Crowdsourcing and crowdfunding applications started to be widely used to tap into the wisdom of the crowd. Novel developments in parametric design and digital fabrication created possibilities for user participation in the making of customized and highly diversified products. With the combination of artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, smart buildings, autonomous devices, robots and software started to transform into agents and active participants. The attempts to harness collective human and artificial intelligence opened up new avenues for combining practice, research and education. On the other hand, there is a growing concern over the possible negative impact of the digital devices, tools, platforms and agents integrated in the making of our buildings and cities, public, private and collective spaces. Examples of those are the potential exclusion of vulnerable and disadvantaged citizens, transfer of citizen power to the corporations, privatization of personal life and data, as well as spatial exclusion through increased technological control and surveillance.
