summary In this paper we explore the concept and design guidelines for an Autonomous Learning Oriented Proto System (ALOPS), a construction system designed to enhance its own performance through time. Our research has been focused on the fabrication of a prototype for a porous wall system which reacts to light intensities by closing or opening its apertures. Taking that aim, we used a combination of robotics, programing, and material behaviour to endow the system with the capacity to record reactions towards encountered sets of conditions during its active energy periods, allowing the system to use this knowledge database to evolve autonomously by feeding this information back into the computation process. This approach in construction systems opens up the architectural design processes to address the creation of digital memory structures rather than complex algorithms in order to operate specific functions. With this development, the architect could think of architectures constantly evolving by learning from their environments as well as of users forming symbiotic and behavioural bonds with the emergent spatial personalities, thus affecting the underpinning relationships between architecture, user and context.

summary On behalf of the BBR (German Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning) the development of an Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) based inspection tool was accomplished as application on an underlying work-in-progress development framework. By providing a machine-based checking process the tool ModelCheck was rolled out to meet demands emerged during pilot projecting. Thus it is capable of processing automated compliance checks on quality criteria for the authorities, e.g. documentation guidelines of BBR regarding building and real estate documentation or building information modeling (BIM) quality criteria formed for the Humboldt-Forum project – a BIM pilot-project managed by BBR. ModelCheck supports checks on IFC models - formal against schemes and logical inspection with regards to alpha-numeric content by using xml-based configurable rules.

summary This paper describes and provides a critique of the design and implementation of the “scoops” – a set of bespoke multifunctioning architectural free-form concrete elements that are a highlight of the new Soheil Abedian School of Architecture by the office of Sir Peter Cook and Gavin Robotham (CRAB). The development includes the transfer of analogue design processes into digital 3D modelling, which is then analysed and rationalized via an exchange with consultants and procurement contractors. The complexity of the concrete works necessitated the use of digital fabrication to make their implementation affordable and within time constraints, with said complexity creating a variety of challenges for many aspects of the entire delivery team. The 3D model played a critical role in communicating intent and accuracy at all stages. The use of site-based craftsmanship combined with computer aided design and fabrication overlapped to realize the project.

summary This paper examines the implications of digital fabrication techniques on design and tectonics, through the example of a double-curvature glass-brick wall, designed and constructed in the context of ongoing research on modular tectonics by the architectural practice of Archi-Union. The high level of form complexity posed a great challenge for fabrication and gave rise to an alternate solution: customization and prefabrication of the supporting steel frame through a CNC rod-bending machine output a robust structure which allowed for accurate and fast placement of the bricks, thus minimizing costs, construction time and preserving design integrity. Therefore, the design orientated towards fabrication, and an algorithmic method that took into consideration production parameters was developed to optimize the structure. Realization of this prototype helps support our methodology for control of complexity in non-standard geometries which is based on adapting the design approach to customized fabrication methods.

title Tree-Structure Canopy:A Case Study in Design and Fabrication of Complex Steel Structures using Digital Tools

summary This paper describes and reflects on the design and manufacturing process of the Tree-Structure canopy for the WestendGate Tower in Frankfurt upon Main, completed early 2011.The project investigated fabrication and assembly principles of complex steel structures as well as the integration of contemporary computational design, engineering, optimization and simulation techniques in a collaborative design approach. This paper focuses on the notion of modular standardization as opposed to non standard customized components. It also engages with issues relating to digital production tools and their impact on construction cost, material performance and tolerances. In addition it examines the reconfiguration of liability during a planning and construction process, an aspect which can be strongly determined by fabrication companies rather than the architect or designer.This paper is written as a reflection on the complete building process when contemporary digital tools are used from design through to fabrication. It studies both the generation of the steel structure as well the ETFE cushion skin. It reports on a collaborative project, where the main author was responsible for the canopies design, parameterization, digitalization and fabrication, as well as for the dissemination of the outcomes and findings during the design and realization process.As such it represents an example of research through design in a contemporary and evolving field.The canopy received a design award by the Hellenic Architecture Association.

summary This paper outlines some investigations from a project which utilizes computing and scripting of specific site components, spatio-temporal movement and behavioural patterns to explore how designer might understand people activities and formulate design interventions within public spaces. This research looks at how generative tools can facilitate designers to integrate the large volume of information received by hybrid data collection, and conventional data analysis directly into the design process. Through an examination of sensing urban space, this research proposes a method to track and record people’s movement patterns in order to implement them via generative design tool. To facilitate this, a scripting method is specified; which uses sensors and motion tracking devices to capture the use of a specific public space. This project proposes a methodology for developing designed spaces and optimal pathways generated from real-time data and feedback captured by sensors.

summary This paper presents a performance driven computational design methodology through introducing a case on parametric structural design. The paper describes the process of design technology development and frames a design methodology through which engineering, -in this case structural- aspects of architectural design could become more understandable, traceable and implementable by designers for dynamic and valid performance measurements and estimations. The research further embeds and customizes the process of topology optimization for specific design problems, in this case applied to the design of truss structures, for testing how the discretized results of Finite Elements Analysis in topology optimization can become the inputs for designing optimal trussed beams or cantilevers alternatives. The procedures of design information exchange between generative, simulative and evaluative modules for approaching the abovementioned engineering and design deliverables are developed and discussed in this paper.

summary In this study, we propose a novel computational system called WoodWeaver for fabricating curved surfaces from conventional materials without using moulds. We use a cutting-based material bending method called Dukta. Our system enables a user to design a single free-form curved surface and to fabricate it based on the bending deformation characteristics of the material. The system also indicates an invalid shape; that is, one that will break upon bending deformation. The user can then design a valid shape with this information. We also develop an optimal Dukta pattern that is the smallest-sized gap pattern necessary to represent a user-designed shape. Given a valid shape, the system generates the optimal pattern and a machine cuts four modules with this pattern. Finally, the user assembles these modules to obtain the desired shape.

title The Return of Nature as an Operative Model: Decoding of Material Properties as Generative Inputs to the Form-Making Process

summary The abandonment of nature as an architectural model and the redefinition of the relationship between form and material were two of the main consequences of industrialization for modern architecture. While nature was replaced by the machine as a model for architecture, industrial production suppressed the craftsman's knowledge of the material and the associated techniques once essential to the form-making process. Thus, the replacement of nature as a model implied that principles once related to natural processes started to be seen as industrial values, i.e., the economy of means stopped being recognized as a quality related to natural form-making processes and became a demand of industrial production. Nowadays, material properties and nature are being reintroduced into architecture with the help of digital technologies; that is, the return of nature though computation. As a result, nature has become an operational model as opposed to the visual or iconic one it used to be; its inner qualities and processes are being decoded in order to inform the form-making process and foster innovative digital ornamentation.

summary This paper outlines a research project that explores the participation in, and perception of, advanced technologies in architectural professional practice through a sociotechnical lens and presents empirical research findings from an online survey distributed to employees in five large-scale architectural practices in Sydney, Australia. This argues that while the computational design paradigm might be well accepted, understood, and documented in academic research contexts, the extent and ways that computational design thinking and methods are put-into-practice has to date been less explored. In engineering and construction, technology adoption studies since the mid 1990s have measured information technology (IT) use (Howard et al. 1998; Samuelson and Björk 2013). In architecture, research has also focused on quantifying IT use (Cichocka 2017), as well as the examination of specific practices such as building information modelling (BIM) (Cardoso Llach 2017; Herr and Fischer 2017; Son et al. 2015). With the notable exceptions of Daniel Cardoso Llach (2015; 2017) and Yanni Loukissas (2012), few scholars have explored advanced technologies in architectural practice from a sociotechnical perspective. This paper argues that a sociotechnical lens can net valuable insights into advanced technology engagement to inform pedagogical approaches in architectural education as well as strategies for continuing professional development.

summary There exists a long time debate over the rational state of the evacuees in the evacuation simulation. Sime et al. insisted that the evacuees behave rationally in most cases. Following this argument Arthur and Passini concluded that if a setting works well under normal conditions, it will have a better chance of working well in emergency conditions. Such an argument for rational decision-making makes statistical models, such as Utility Maximizing Model (UMM), acting as proper framework for choice modelling in evacuation. However, on the other side, some people pointed out that there exists panic in the evacuation and bounded rationality theory, represented by pruned Decision Tree Model (DTM), should be adapted in choice modelling instead. Such a debate over stress effect causes hesitations and uncertainties when researchers try to select a proper model framework for their practical simulation. This study compared the performances (prediction accuracies) of the UMM and DTM with the same set of choice data collected in a virtual evacuation experiment. With a similar level of performance on both sides, it is suggested that the on-going debate does NOT bring any difference to the choice modelling in practical evacuation simulation. It is time to improve the performance rather than to continue the debate.

summary New generation of fabrication machines, such as 3-D printers, do not use “real” materials nor processes generally used in building construction, and so further exacerbate the disconnect between laboratory-based prototyping and full-scale building construction techniques. This research critically reviews the results of a graduate fabrication course from a process-centric standpoint. Students in the course create specification for fabrication and assembly activities through a diagrammatic language that integrates several types of construction knowledge such as design, material properties, machine constraints, and assembly guidelines. This document presents the foundations of the methodology, and discussed the results based on two criteria: Process Modeling and CAD/CAM workflow.

summary In this paper I identify the “infrastructure model” as the predominant approach to computationally mediated participatory design from the 1960s until the present, and discuss its history, conceptual underpinnings, and limitations. As case studies for this analysis, I use the French-based architect Yona Friedman’s and the MIT Architecture Machine Group’s 1970s proposals for participatory design computational systems. I employ the polysemic notion of “performance” to interrogate the two systems in three levels: What rationale supports the authors’ claims that in order for design to well perform for its future users, it should be performed by them? What computational models are developed to enable users to perform their own designs? How can performance, as an intuitive, improvisational process, be used to criticize the traditional models of computation in design participation and devise new computational agendas?

Now students need to build back some of that analytical, logical, critical, and analogical thinking that may have atrophied due to a traditional architectural education. Playing with toy construction kits for building automatic control and mobile robot models, does the job without losing the architect´s approach and attitude.

summary In urban planning exploration and analysis assist the generation, measurement, interpretation and management of the modelled urban environments. This frequently involves categorisation of model elements and identification of element types. Such designation of elements can be achieved through attribution (e.g. ‘tagging’ or ‘layering’) or direct selection by model users. However, for large, complex models the number and arrangement of elements makes these approaches impractical in terms of time/effort and accuracy. This is particularly true of models which include substantial numbers of elements representing existing urban fabric, rather than only newly generated elements (which might be automatically attributed during the generation process). We present methods for identification and categorisation of model elements in models of existing and proposed urban agglomerations. We also suggest how these methods can enable exploration of models, discovery of identities and relationships not otherwise obvious, and acquisition of insights to the models’ structure and contents which are not captured, and may even be obscured, by manual selection or automated pre-attribution.

summary Outdoor thermal comfort for pedestrians becomes important issues in urban planning affecting everyone’s daily lives. Mean Radiant Temperature (T mrt ) is one of the most important parameters in micro climate. In this study, we built a computerised model with variable and typical building types. Then a radiation model SOLWEIG was used to simulate pavements’ T mrt spatial variations. We analysed and discussed the simulation results by comparing different building types. We used RayMan to find some relationship between thermal comfort index PET or PMV. Our finding can act as a reference for architects and planners to make design decisions on quantifying the thermal comfort in specific urban environment and their building types.

summary For the built environment's transformation we are confronted with complex dynamics connected to economic, ecologic and demographic change (Czerkauer-Yamu et al., 2013; Yamu, 2014). In general, cities are complex systems being a "heterogeneous mosaic" of a variety of cultures and functions, characterised by diverging perceptions and interests (ibid). The juxtaposed perceptions and interests in relation to ongoing spatial processes of change create a particularly complex situation. Thus, for planning processes we are in need of approaches that are able to cope not only with the urban complexity but also allow for participatory processes to empower citizens. This paper presents the approach of using Digital Twins in virtual reality (VR) for civic engagement in urban planning, enriched with quantitative and qualitative empirical data as one promising approach to tackle not only the complexity of cities but also involve citizens in the planning process.

summary Based on the description of a conceptual framework for the representation of planning problems on various scales, we introduce an evolutionary design optimization system. This system is exemplified by means of the generation of street networks with locally defined properties for centrality. We show three different scenarios for planning requirements and evaluate the resulting structures with respect to the requirements of our framework. Finally the potentials and challenges of the presented approach are discussed in detail.
