summary This paper presents the results of an academic research in the field of parametric-generative design and through projective tests and processes using parametric tools and computational logic. Thus, five experiments for the region of the Terminal Bandeira Flag Square were set forth. From the urban guidelines and an object in common, it was a distinct possibility, where it was possible to analyze the advances and setbacks in the process of project development. The approach taken is an exploration of design processes that involve computational logic for formulating, exploring and creating architectural themes and its interfaces with other fields of knowledge: algorithmic architecture.

summary The paper describes the development of a set of smart BIM components to facilitate and accelerate the creation of large-scale urban models in the early design phase in a BIM software environment. The components leverage the analytical, parametric and modelling capabilities of the BIM environment to support adaptive parameter-driven building geometry, patterning of different building types, early numerical and graphical design evaluation, various simulation methods and the exploration of design alternatives. The toolset consists of the most common building shapes, but can be extended with additional shapes and their respective area and volumetric calculations when necessary. The rapid large-scale deployment of the components has been achieved by diverting existing tools from their intended use.

summary Spatial design is becoming an increasingly social, participatory and inclusive practice. In the last decade, ordinary people all around the world have started to claim a shaping power over the processes of urbanization; over the ways in which our cities are made and remade (Harvey, 2013). There has been a resurgence in the number of do-it-yourself cooperatives initiated by non-designer citizens, activists, artists and designers. In parallel to these developments, a plethora of social technologies, tools and platforms have been developed to include a variety of stakeholders in the architectural design, urban design, planning and decision-making processes. Crowdsourcing and crowdfunding applications started to be widely used to tap into the wisdom of the crowd. Novel developments in parametric design and digital fabrication created possibilities for user participation in the making of customized and highly diversified products. With the combination of artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, smart buildings, autonomous devices, robots and software started to transform into agents and active participants. The attempts to harness collective human and artificial intelligence opened up new avenues for combining practice, research and education. On the other hand, there is a growing concern over the possible negative impact of the digital devices, tools, platforms and agents integrated in the making of our buildings and cities, public, private and collective spaces. Examples of those are the potential exclusion of vulnerable and disadvantaged citizens, transfer of citizen power to the corporations, privatization of personal life and data, as well as spatial exclusion through increased technological control and surveillance.

summary The development of new shapes in architecture has deeply influenced the current perception of the built environment. The analysis of the processes behind this evolution is, therefore, of great interest. At least two well known factors, influencing this development, may be pointed out: the great improvement of digital tools and the tendency toward building distinctiveness.In particular, the innovation of digital tools such as parametric modeling is resulting in an overall diffusion of complex shapes, and the phenomenon is also evident in a clear expressionistic search for architectural singularity, that some might consider as a negative effect of globalization trends.Though, if we can consider as a positive result the fact that parameterization allows a deeper control over design factors in terms of reference to cultural, historical and physical context, at the same time such control possibilities are sometimes so stark to be even auto-referential, stepping over site-specific parameterization, to create unusual shapes just for the sake of complexity.The ever-growing diffusion of generative design processes is in fact going to transform niche procedures, frequently limited to temporary decontextualized structures, into an architectural complexification as an end in itself.The hypothesis of this paper is to demonstrate that site-specific parametrization can be considered as a tool able to translate intentions into shape; it is necessary, for this aim, the widening of the meaning of the word singularity.

summary Designing the Negative was the title of a Master Studio that took place at the Institute of Architecture and Media of Graz University of Technology during the summer semester of 2012. Students designed and fabricated prototypes of customized concrete formwork as part of their studio assignment. The studio theme forced students to think about digital fabrication with parametric tools in a hands-on fashion. Using robotic technology and hot-wire cutting, students worked with the robot’s constraints (size of the robot’s arm, robot’s axis and tool’s restrictions) to design complex curved elements that could serve as formwork (the negative) for cast concrete elements (the positive). The students were asked to design a production strategy for their cast concrete elements as well as the application of said elements in an architectural scheme. The student projects confirmed the value of a pedagogy that takes on research-relevant questions in an interdisciplinary studio setting and engages students in a process that is best described as digital crafting: it simultaneously addressed the conceptual and technical as well as the material and tactile aspects of digital fabrication and design.

summary This paper presents an approach for microclimate aware densification of urban areas by creating best practices for an in situ application for block-size urban developments.The discussed procedure generates and evaluates urban block types according to microclimate criteria by integrating climate and comfort parameters in the design process of existing urban areas. It supports urban designers by generating design strategies that aim for climate, comfort and spatial as well as for urban design qualities.To achieve this, a multi-step method with different analysis and research processes has been set up. At the end, a parametric envelope tool was created for a local case study area by incorporating pre-defined design strategies built on previous investigations as urban design strategies. It is expected that this envelope tool can be transferred to similar urban development activities and guide microclimatic versus densification trade-offs. The presented approach can be applied from street canyon to block size urban situations.

summary The use of solar energy in buildings requires defining proper systems according to different urban typologies. This paper presents a strategy for assessment in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and a parametric analysis of an detached housing typology in Building Information Modeling (BIM), which demonstrates an integrated approach to estimate solar energy potential, applied to the context of Concepción, Chile. Residential areas are identified with different energy consumption and solar capture in roofs, walls or outside space recorded in a urban GIS, and checks the architectural implementation of a roofing system in residential buildings through an integrated evaluation and design in BIM.

summary Recently, as the changes in the economic structure, service industries have become an important factor of the urban regeneration.  Especially, Knowledge-based industry is garnering attention as an engine of urban economics. Urban present condition such as location of Knowledge-based industry visualization and analysis are main issues for people as well as policymakers, urban planner and designers. This paper presents analysis of the spatial characteristics of the distribution and spatial concentration of Knowledge-based Industry, specifically Business-support Services. Furthermore, this paper is intended to describe examination of the visual relation between spatial conditions and configuration by visualization using GIS and space syntax analysis. This paper shows that business support services are likely to concentrate in specific places. Results of this study show that each type of business support services is concentrated in different districts. Results show that creative design industries are located near the park, riverfront, and such third places with high integration and connectivity with the street by space syntax analysis. Results show that concentrated districts of creative design companies at inner block show relatively high local integration values and connectivity. This study elucidates how industrial concentration and spatial configuration can be ascertained visually.

summary The idea of ‘city’ has now surpassed its physical concept. The emergence of the Internet and the growing development of information and communication technologies (ICT) have changed the behaviour of our society in the past decade and revolutionised the traditional ways of representing space. The classic 2D (floor plans, sections and elevations) and 3D representations have been gradually replaced by 3D digital models that can reproduce buildings and places in a virtual environment.3D digital models are tools that enable a wide range of applications in urban planning and management, especially in architectural and data documentation where they allow the analysis of theoretical scenarios such as: 1) representation of the past, considering the procedures needed to restore the heritage; 2) visualisation of the present, to enable dissemination and communication of the city as it is; and, 3) simulation of the future, with the model being used to visualise and experiment with architectural objects, even those at a design stage. The main contribution of this work is to present an urban application developed into a GeoBIM tool, ESRI City Engine Software (CE), that integrates GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and BIM (Building Information Modelling) concepts. Finally, to enhance its potential, three spatial analyses were conducted.

summary The aim of this paper is to design a public facilitie using both digital manufacture and rapid prototyping design methods. These new technologies have been used in product design development by some ways: helping in the comprehension of complex geometries; used as tools for analyzing the design process, thus avoiding errors in the project. The analysis were carried out using virtual simulation tests and physical prototype in reduced scale. The prototype was manufactured using the 3D printer V-Flash in the Virtual Design Laboratory – UFRGS, where positive and negatives aspects were identified and described.

summary This paper outlines a custom-built suite of scripts that automate the processes of reinforced concrete design and is directly linked to the parametric design model of the architect. The workflow creates a design and engineering feedback loop for early phase schematic design. Using this system, the design geometry is generated and then deconstructed into a Finite Element model. The workflow executes a static analysis then calculates rebar size and placement, and finally generates fabrication drawings. This methodology allows architectural intent and engineering analysis to be collapsed into a single non-linear design process.

summary In this era, Architectural Design Practice is faced with a paradigm shift in its conventional approaches towards computational methods. In this regard, it is considered a pedagogic challenge to boost up knowledge and skills of architectural students’ towards an advanced approach of architectural design that emphasizes the potentials and complexity of computational environments and parametric tools for design problem solving. For introducing the concept of Parametric Oriented Design Methods to 3rd year level architectural students, an experimental pedagogic course was designed in the scholastic year of 2012-2013 at German Jordanian University GJU (School of Architecture and Built Environment SABE) to approach this concept. In the preparation phase, the experimental course was designed to incorporate structured instructing and training method to be consecutively performed within experimental lab environment to target predetermined learning outcomes and goals. The involved students were intentionally classified into three levels of previous involvement associated with the related software operating skills and computational design exposure. In the implementation phase, the predetermined instructing and training procedures were performed in the controlled environment according to the planned tasks and time intervals. Preceded tactics were prepared to be executed to resolve various anticipated complication. In this phase also, students’ performance and comprehension capacity were observed and recorded. In data analysis phase, the observed results were verified and correlations were recognized. In the final phase, conclusions were established and recommendations for further related pedagogic experiments were introduced.

summary Automation is transforming a significant number of industries today. This paper discusses how the Design and Construction industry is also entering into a new era of automation. In the paper I observe that designers are automating by using parametric tools (BIM, scripting, etc.) while contractors are moving into pre-fabrication and modularization. Both conceptualizations are incomplete. The paper presents how we are in the first steps of creating learning algorithms that develop specific intelligence in design synthesis and how the design field will became even more sophisticated as a second generation of multi-material 3D printing techniques produce new materials.

summary This paper presents an analytical shape grammar to study the designs of the ornamental blocks in Frank Lloyd Wright’s Californian Textile Block Houses. The paper introduces the textile block system and expands on the design of the Millard house as a case study. The paper presents two formalistic applications of the shape grammar to generate the original block design: one as a sequential shape grammar and the other as a parallel shape grammar. Both examples are able to generate the same results; and they hint at the potential to expand the shape grammar to generate other design alternatives.

summary The research represented in this paper proposes to reinvestigate the relationship between structure and appearance through a performative analysis of textured stainless steel, as verified through full-scale prototyping. The work takes a scientific design approach while incorporating a computational workflow that is informed by the material’s physical parameters, and draws a connection between the scales of molecular composition to large-scale geometric systems.Furthermore, the work attempts to provide evidence for thin-gauge textured metals as a high performance and adaptive material, by identifying structural rigidity and particular specular quality as inherent characteristics born from the texturing process. In addition, through close collaboration with the sponsoring manufacturer of textured stainless steel, we are able to gain access to material expertise and large-scale fabrication equipment not readily available to designers, thereby forging a mutually beneficial relationship surrounding the research.

summary This paper presents the work carried out by a multidisciplinary team of researchers, gathering knowledge in architecture, drawing, geometry, mathematics and computation. The research was directed in order to create a computational tool for architectural visualization - a new digital perspectograph - with the use of a new theoretical and operative approach to linear perspective. A new kind of projection surface, a parametric one, is added to the perspective concept under current tools. The mutations of this surface are explained and a set of graphical outputs is shown. A workshop with architecture students took place to help test and validate the concept and the computational prototype.

summary The increasing use of building performance simulation in architectural design enriches digital models and derived prototyping geometries with performance data that makes them analytically powerful artefacts serving sustainable design. In our class “Parametric Design”, students perform concurrent thermal and daylight optimization during the architectural ideation process, employing digital simulation tools, and also utilize rapid prototyping techniques to produce process artefacts and whole-building analysis models with climate-based day-light metrics physically embedded. Simulation metrics are merged with prototyping geometries to be output on a colour-capable Zprinter; the resultant hybrid artefacts simultaneously allow three-dimensional formal as well as whole-year daylight performance evaluation, rendering analysis scope four-dimensional. They embody a specific epistemological type that we compare to other model instances and posit to be an example of multivalent representation, a formal class that aids knowledge accretion in  workflows and allows designers to gain a physically reframed understanding of geometry-performance relationships.
