summary In this paper we will present the permeability regimes: concepts conceived to contribute with the understanding of the new roles and necessary skills for the architect and designer to design performative and interactive spaces. This contribution, as will be shown here, is based on theoretical and empirical bases that will address a specific context: the methods for introducing and making tangible the relation between information, human and space for architecture students. Therefore, we will describe the dynamics of an interactive installation developed by undergraduate students, relating it to the permeability regimes.

summary This research project explores the Arduino potentialities, as a performer and mediator between individuals and their environment. Our goal is to generate spaces to modify that environment through an interface that dialogues with stimuli and actions.Our interest is to connect vulnerable individuals to possible acts of appropriation that is, being able to perform a symbolic ownership of their environments. For doing that, we see the opportunity of using Arduino within the context of differential pedagogy for children with special needs. All this, considering the evident deficiencies of that kind of educational facilities, particularly regarding children with motor disabilities daily activities.

summary The article presents an experience of association between a hackerspace and a multidisciplinary design studio at the Department of Architecture and Urbanism of the Federal University of Santa Catarina, during two semesters. The Tarrafa Hacker Club members shared their collaborative environment with the students and tutors throughout the academic experiment. The hacker culture highlighted dynamic relations that connect people, information, tools and matter. This approach has suggested meaningful speculations about the future of architecture education and practice.

summary In relation to cities, wind is one of the less studied meteorological parameter. Constant vertical rate variations from meso scale to micro scale, altogether with strenght, direction, velocity of the urban canyon, makes the wind a complex subject of study. To achieve this, a methodological strategy that addresses the wind's multi dimensionality was raised. It was aplied to Punta Arenas, the southernmost city in the world, where most of the time winds come 90% from the same direction with speeds reaching 128 km/h. Wind's constant directional behavior allows the recognition of areodynamic phenomena produced, in the first instance, for the wind profiles influenced by the urban rugosity and then, at morphologycal level, the aerodynamic behavior of the layered fluids over the building bodies, generating a regular pattern between solids and fluids. The strong winds in cities with cold climate influence the use of public spaces, which, not being designed under this conditions, do not develop proper levels of thermal comfort.

summary Peripheral devices like smart phones offer an opportunity to lower the barrier to spontaneous collection and sharing of information during distributed collaboration. We have completed development of guidelines and a framework that focuses on peripheral devices in collaboration. In order to explore the design space generated by our principles, we conducted a role-playing experiment about commissioning a building, in which an “on-site” team and a “design” team were expected to find and resolve discrepancies between requirements, design documents, and the actual site. The teams were given Styrofoam panels to act as pretend smart peripherals to invoke play and help probe the design space. We found that “reflection on action” (debriefing and subsequent brainstorming) was fruitful for ideation and theorem building about interaction, but “reflection in action” failed. Yet, reflection in action, particularly with such probes, is important to capture the “mechanics of collaboration”. Therefore, we are considering adapting improvisational theatre to our study of distributed collaboration.

summary Daylight is a crucial element for indoor environment quality. Office buildings commonly use fully glazed façades to reflect a luxurious appearance and to maximize natural light at the expenses of high energy consumption due to cooling/heating. Double-skin façades are one of the solutions that improve the building efficiency while maintaining good natural lighting. This paper studies the impact of various perforated outer skins for non-sealed double-skin facades on light quality in prototypical office space in Egypt using parametric design. A traditional solution for light such as the Mashrabiya is taken as an inspiration for this study to generate different forms of perforated screens. The cases were analysed using light simulation tool and sorted by a genetic algorithm to show best 30 solutions offered by the design criteria. A methodology to achieve these objectives was suggested in this paper to reach better light quality in indoor spaces.

summary This paper attempts to document the crucial questions addressed and analyze the decisions made in the design of an interactive structure. One of the main contributions of this paper is to explore how a physical environment can change its shape to accommodate various spatial performances based on the movement of the user’s body. The central focus is on the relationship between materials, form and interactive systems of control.Alloplastic Architecture is a project involving an adaptive tensegrity structure that responds to human movement. The intention is to establish a scenario whereby a dancer can dance with the structure such that it reacts to her presence without any physical contact. Thus, three issues within the design process need to be addressed: what kind of structure might be most appropriate for form transformation (structure), how best to make it adaptive (adaptation) and how to control the movement of the structure (control). Lessons learnt from this project, in terms of its structural adaptability, language of soft form transformation and the technique of controlling the interaction will provide new possibilities for enriching human-environment interactions.

summary The present work constitutes the first stage of an ongoing research on the interaction between morphological characteristics of the urban fabric and the amount of social activity in such spaces. In order to analyze such correlation, the current research links together two different field of studies: Space Syntax on one side, for the morphological analysis of the spatial configuration of the urban fabric, and a remote sensing study about social activity in the analyzed urban context, on the other. Data extracted from location-based online Social Networks databases (e.g. Foursquare) are employed in order to perform such survey. The resulting methodology constitutes an early attempt to set a novel approach to the study of the relationships between the morphological and configurational characteristics of urban systems and actual human dynamics in urban contexts.

summary The relationship between the material settings and situational belonging to a more general notion of the culture of a given community remains the subject of inquiry of at least two scientific disciplines: anthropology and urban morphology studies. In this study an assessment of the various modelling platforms is performed with the objective of finding the most efficient method which allows the description of the semiotic features of urbanscapes. The ideal system should link the parametric definition of urban geometry with the high flexibility of data input and easy manipulation. In order to enable culture related analyses of urbanscapes, analyses should be performed which refers to the semiotics of morphological structures in the detailed scale of urban enclosure, which are streets or squares. Some elements of the proposed method of index key analyses are explained as one possible solution for the problems posed.

summary Working in pairs is collective collaboration. The collective intelligence, crowdthinking and its variations are part of today's language. Based on this concept, we propose to fill empty spaces from the current communication of culture from Goverment of Córdoba. There is an information movement and events in conection to crowd. We propose a device, that broadcasts the contents of the hashtag: #quetenemoshoy, making it more popular, and in everyone's range. We set out a collaboration situation, with a concrete proposal, that includes dialogue with its surroundings. Articulating knowledge from different disciplines, between the goverment and the residents. Following neologism from Gutiérrez-Rubí y Freire (2013),we propose will be CITY-CROWD-CREATING.

summary In order to support an architect’s decision to evaluate and choose more efficient structural solutions in the concept design, it is necessary to establish an interactive feedback loop between structural solver and geometry modeller which would allow one to analyse a great number of solutions generated in the scripting design process. Defining a cross-disciplinary data structure as an analytical model, the communication between existing structural solver (OOFEM) and geometry modeller (Grasshopper) was established. Automation of the entire analysis process was done by the bridging tools MIDAS and Donkey, which have been developed. This paper presents the method of creation of an analytical model by Donkey, and deals with how to visualize, interpret and use the result values from the structural analysis.

summary The Nuit Blanche Pavilion is a recent project by Gernot Riether in collaboration with artist Damien Valero. The project takes advantage of an elastic behavior found in high-density elastomers to form a lightweight structure that integrates form, geometry and program in a single material system. Grasshopper and the finite element plug-in Karamba were used to optimize these interdependencies. This paper will describe the design of the project and elaborate on an aspect of Riether’s research that uses digital technology to promote environmentally responsible materials and construction methods.

summary This paper discusses the design exploration of funicular shell structures based on Thrust Network Analysis (TNA) The presented graphical form finding approach and its interactive, digital-tool implementation target to foster the understanding of the relation between form and force in compression curved surface structures in an intuitive and playful way. Based on this understanding, the designer can fully take advantage of the presented method and digital tools to adapt the efficient structural system to the specific needs of different architectural applications. The paper focuses on simple examples to visualize the graphical concept of various modification techniques used for this form finding approach. Key operations and modifications have been identified and demonstrate the surprisingly flexible and manifold design space of funicular form. This variety of shapes and spatial articulation of funicular form is further investigated by discussing several built prototypes.

summary This paper describes work conducted as part of an interdisciplinary research project into new approaches to using computer technology in the early phases of the architectural design process. The aim is to reduce the existing discrepancy between familiar, analogue ways of working in the early design stages and the increasingly widespread use of digital tools in office practice. Taking this as its starting point, a prototype for a design platform was developed. The core of the project is a direct, real-time connection between real volumetric models, an interactive 3D sketching-tool and interactive digital content that supports the design process. The conceptual and technical core of this connection is an integrated object recognition system. In this paper we describe the need for an integrated solution, the underlying conceptual idea and the recognition methods implemented including their respective strengths and limitations.

summary This paper describes two research projects in the field of interactive architecture, both examples of experience catalysts; Settings which allow new insights in the aesthetic constitution and perception of environments. This term can be thought of as somewhat synonymous with artistic intervention, but is used instead to recognize that the participants might not self-identify as artists. We are working with architectural notions of space and place, but are interested in the experience of place more than its formal structure. We wish to emphasize the dynamic and are interested in transitions not as the pauses between states but as destinations worth exploring. Quadricone by Selena Savic is an actual experience catalyst: a physical manifestation of a digital “material” (in this case network traffic.) The goal is less data visualization and more an attempt to understand what it means to physically experience something normally invisible. Inter-Actor by Andrew Sempere casts architecture as an ongoing event which might benefit from the flexibility of the digital. The idea is to create a combination of software and hardware that allows for “rapid prototyping” of interactive space. Inter-Actor is not an experience catalyst but a toolkit for creating them.

summary Cellular automata (CA) is a well-known computation method introduced by John von Neumann and Stanislaw Ulam in the 1940s. Since then, it has been studied in various fields such as computer science, biology, physics, chemistry, and art. The Classic CA algorithm is a calculation of a grid of cells' binary states based on neighboring cells and a set of rules. With the variation of these parameters, the CA algorithm has evolved into alternative versions such as 3D CA, Multiple neighborhood CA, Multiple rules CA, and Stochastic CA (Url-1). As a rule-based generative algorithm, CA has been used as a bottom-up design approach in the architectural design process in the search for form (Frazer,1995; Dinçer et al., 2014), in simulating the displacement of individuals in space, and in revealing complex relations at the urban scale (Güzelci, 2013). There are implementations of CA tools in 3D design software for designers as additional scripts or plug-ins. However, these often have limited ability to create customized CA algorithms by the designer. This study aims to create a customizable framework for 3D CA algorithms to be used in 3D form explorations by designers. Grasshopper3D, which is a visual scripting environment in Rhinoceros 3D, is used to implement the framework. The main difference between this work and the current Grasshopper3D plug-ins for CA simulation is the customizability and the real-time control of the framework. The parameters that allow the CA algorithm to be customized are; the initial state of the 3D grid, neighborhood conditions, cell states and rules. CA algorithms are created for each customizable parameter using the framework. Those algorithms are evaluated based on the ability to generate form. A voxel-based approach is used to generate geometry from the points created by the 3D cellular automata. In future, forms generated using this framework can be used as a form generating tool for digital environments.

summary This paper outlines an approach to adaptive residential design explored through recent research and an executed prototype, the North House project (2007-2009), undertaken through an interdisciplinary collaboration of researchers and students from the University of Waterloo, Ryerson University and Simon Fraser University in concert with professional and industry partners. This project aimed to develop a framework for the delivery of adaptive detached residential buildings capable of net-zero energy performance in the temperate climate zone, or the near north. Within this project, the term “adaptive” is developed across several tracts of conceptualization and execution including site and climatically derived models for building material composition and envelope ratios, environmentally-responsive kinetic envelope components, intelligent HVAC controls and interactive interface design aimed at producing co-evolutionary behaviors between building systems and inhabitants. A provisional definition of adaptive architecture is outlined to address this range of considerations that calls into question the stable image of domestic architecture and its relationship to energy and contemporary assumptions regarding sustainable design. This paper also outlines computational approaches to design optimization, distributed building systems integration and the human-controls interfaces applicable to the home’s ecology of physical and information technologies.

summary Urban design is a complex process which deals with multitude of aspects to shape quality urban space. On one hand, we have quantitative aspects such as land use, building heights or floor space index which are tackled on top-down approach. On the other hand, we need to take into consideration more subjective, qualitative aspects such as building shapes and space between them based on bottom-up principle.In order to connect both principles, a new, performance-based parametric urban design method is proposed. It is based on a concept of parametric maps, which represent spatial distribution of key building parameters (quantitative criteria, top-down) throughout the area and are preliminary loaded into the virtual urban development area. Once parametric maps are loaded, we begin designing a development by placing the buildings (qualitative criteria, bottom-up), which adapt their parameters while changing their locations. Parametric maps thus represent a link between a set of spatial parameters and the actual shape of each building in a way, which connects both, top-down and bottom-up principles of urban design into a single conceptual framework.In order to evaluate this new method, an interactive prototype application has been developed in Maya (3D modeling software) and the following results were obtained: 1.) a significant speedup is possible in the creation of different design alternatives in early stage of urban design process; 2.) use of parametric maps is most suitable for mid- to large-scale projects (+15 buildings), while they can be redundant for small-scale areas; 3.) possibility of inconsistency with site regulations is diminished.

summary This paper presents the development and results of interventions in urban spaces using two graphic interactive interfaces, Backstage and Comments. They were implemented during cultural actions carried out as part of the 'Hybrid Territories project: digital media, communities, and cultural actions' developed by Nomads.usp, University of São Paulo, Brazil. It consists of events aiming to explore the creation of hybrid situations in urban fragments so as to enrich them in multiple ways, but mainly from a sociocultural perspective.
