title POP-OP: A Shape Memory-Based Morphing Wall
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 11 - no. 3, 347-362
summary Recent tendencies in architecture take a unique point of view, with aesthetically novel and unnatural sensibilities emerging from a close scrutiny and study of apparently natural systems. These tendencies are being driven by mathematical and computational abstractions that transform the way we understand the matterinformation relationship. This project was inspired by Op Art, a twentieth century art movement and style in which artists sought to create an impression of movement on an image surface by means of an optical illusion. Passive elements consisting of composite laminates were produced with the goal of creating lightweight, semi-rigid, and nearly transparent pieces. The incorporation of active materials comprised a unique aspect of this project: the investigation of surface movement through controlled and repeatable deformation of the composite structure using shape memory alloy (SMA) wiring technology. The integration of composite materials with SMA wiring and Arduino automation control resulted in an architectural wall that incorporated perceptual and actual motion.

title The evolution of representation in architecture
source FUTURE TRADITIONS [1st eCAADe Regional International Workshop Proceedings / ISBN 978-989-8527-03-5], University of Porto, Faculty of Architecture (Portugal), 4-5 April 2013, pp. 27-38
summary This paper proposes an overview on the relation between representation, technology and architecture methodologies. Focusing on disposable digital tools, it reaches the new tools of virtual immersive 3D architectural environments. It also addresses the concepts of operative 3D, augmented reality and robotic manufacturing, thus introducing a system of digital tools that enables users to step inside a 3D virtual reality environment, built as a virtual building prototype, and to use all data instructions directly with the construction industry. This paper questions therefore the traditional processes and perceptions in architecture and draw present and future advanced state-of-the-arts methodologies. As a result, future and tradition in architectural design methods are challenged. Recognizing the permanent tensions between traditional and innovative processes, possible methodological changes are put in perspective, namely the fields of technical representation, building construction and design processes.

summary This paper describes activities of analysis and composition of patterns based on architectural elements of buildings of historic heritage. During two separate workshops, which used a method previously established, the rules of symmetry and recursion were recognized in the geometry of these architectural elements and new patters were created through dynamic processes of digital representation. Such activities can stimulate the students´ capacity of recognizing design actions, contributing to their perception of the design problems and, thus, to the knowledge for design practice.

title Understanding and interpreting urban space (in)formation
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 11 - no. 2, 135-156
summary This paper introduces a novel approach to understanding the complex information and logics of urban spaces by the non-professional public. A model for Interpretation of Qualities in Urban Space (aMIQUS) is proposed. The objectives are threefold: first, to form common, valid and applicable measures to assess features of space design; second, to indicate the developmental trait that considerably affect users' spatial experience which - taken as a consequence - derives from either sustainable/prudent or poor design decisions; and third, to generically recreate and visually represent urban spaces for communicative purposes. The model represents an identification method, not a problem-solving mechanism and is intended as a pragmatic instrument for recognizing crucial information, narrative, embedded in spatial scene. Model is followed by the initial idea to extend it in terms of an educational digital interface for the general public, participating in the process of urban decision-making. The paper concisely summarizes both theoretical and applicative efforts.

title Aerodynamic Performance Driven Form-Generation for Skyscraper Design
source Global Design and Local Materialization[Proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Futures / ISBN 978-3-642-38973-3] Shanghai, China, July 3-5, 2013, pp. 315-326.
summary I have conducted a study to explore aerodynamic performance as a driver for skyscraper design, utilizing up-to-date parametric design and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technologies readily available to architects. Previous scientific research has suggested strategies in modifying the form of skyscrapers for the purpose of improving their aerodynamic performance. I have incorporated six of such strategies into parametric design tool to produce a matrix of 60 prototypes. These prototypes are subjected to qualitative and quantitatively evaluation iterations to yield the most optimized design, with considerations given primarily to aerodynamic performance, and secondarily to structural robustness, program potential, and image attractiveness. The selected design option is further developed into a skyscraper concept. A multi-staged aerodynamic performance-driven design process is the most important result of the study. In addition, two valuable insights have been obtained: first, to inject a new inspiration into the design of skyscrapers, I have implemented the MultiDisciplinary Optimization (MDO) methodology from the aerospace industry. Second, I am able to support form-generation parametric design by quantitative evaluation process.

title Partituras imagéticas: Um Diálogo Poético entre Música e Imagem [Imagery scores: A poetic Dialogue between Music and Image]
source SIGraDi 2013 [Proceedings of the 17th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISBN: 978-956-7051-86-1] Chile - Valparaíso 20 - 22 November 2013, pp. 646 - 650
summary This paper suggests a new and experimental way of visualizing music. This project turns linear information from piano sheets into a two-dimensional representation. Using a symbology created to translate music data to visual plastic elements, in a metaphorical way to link sound and image, the project aims to build a music map, that could be able to picture those music data in other visualizations. Besides, this code can be used in the other way around: to create piano sheets from ready images. So, those experiences resulted in virtual images, tridimensional sculptures and new ways of creating music.

title Arte da Manipulação: As Interações entre Fotografia e Arte na Era Digital [The Art of Manipulation: The interaction between Photography and Art in the Digital Era]
source SIGraDi 2013 [Proceedings of the 17th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISBN: 978-956-7051-86-1] Chile - Valparaíso 20 - 22 November 2013, pp. 655 - 658
summary The questions on this article point to a different understanding of the image with its different medias, more specifically where the digitalization and manipulation of the image unfocussed the once sharp and clear frontiers between photography and painting. The contemporary visual artists share a desire for the impurity and contagion in the relations between the photographic and the pictorial. The works alternate themselves between these bases besides exploring new relationships between them. It is not important anymore how an image derives into another, and today the term image manipulation can be applied for both photography and painting.

summary ‘Ambient Terrain’ explores the application of large-scale, sensor-based site analysis. The research develops various techniques dealing with the logging, storage, retrieval, analysis, and representation of sensor and image-based data. These techniques could be utilized in concert with traditional site preparation and site information gathering processes, and could arguably serve to reevaluate the site preparation process altogether in a manner which not only focuses on terrestrial data, but also on metrics which are dynamic and multidimensional. The research proposes direct applications for urban space and the built environment, in the modes of site appraisal, design and the generation of new spatial strategies.

doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2013.955

summary Media façades grant infinitely many faces to a building and can change the architectural meaning of what a façade is. They can also help to transform the face of the building into an over-size communication device for public (Borras, 2010). Contemporary media façades mostly rely on the content of their screens, and only a small number of them physicality of the screen itself. Precedent building façades that incorporate moving componentsareunable to function as displays. In this paper we present a media façade design, titled“Tran[s]quillity”, in which we fuse reconfigurable building com-ponents with display technologies to achieve a unique design. As well as fulfilling the function of a regular media wall -as a crisp screen- we imagine Tran[s]quillity as a transformable kinetic sculpture that can act as a screen of physical depth to introduce greater functionality and interactivity.

summary As architectural design methodologies focus increasingly on the production of dynamic form, the means to actuate these forms, the input that fuels parametric processes, analytical form-generating techniques and responsive controls is of primary concern. In the virtual test beds where systems are developed, inputs are often ad-hoc, based on crude assumptions of the environment, or disconnected from the physical environment entirely.Inverting a technique originally developed to illuminate virtual objects with light captured from real (physical) environments, this project explores image-based lighting as a means of detailed environmental light sensing. The objective of the project is to demonstrate the application of High Dynamic Range (HDR) image data acquired continuously in the physical world as signal input to inform, actuate and evaluate responsive solar control and daylighting systems. As a proof of concept, a virtual hemispherical dome consisting of 145 apertures is controlled to respond in real time to continuous image-based measurements of sky luminance, seeking a defined set of daylighting and solar control objectives. The paper concludes by discussing the implications of incorporating real-world environmental data in the development of dynamic form.

summary At present, computer aided design (CAD) software has proven ill equipped to manage the spatial variations in material properties. Most digital design packages employ a surface modeling paradigm where a solid object is that which is enclosed by a set of boundaries (known as boundary representations or “B-rep” for short). In surface models, material representations are often treated as homogenous and discrete. Yet, natural materials are capable of structures where the variability of material within a volume is defined at a multiplicity of scales and according to various functional criteria. With the advent of new 3D printing techniques, a new possibility emerges—allowing new multi-material composite objects to be fabricated in a single build volume with a high degree of dimensional accuracy and repeatability. However, a big limitation facing complex high resolution digital fabrication comes from the software’s inability to represent or handle material variability. This paper proposes a new digital interface for working with multi-material distributions at a variety of scales using a rasterization process. Beyond the immediate benefit of precise graduated control over the material distribution within a 3D printed volume, our interface opens new creative opportunities by enabling the use of existing image processing techniques (such as filtering, mapping, etc.) which can be applied to three-dimensional voxel fields. Examples are provided which explore the potential of multi-scale material distributions.

summary As technology affine urban landscape researchers, working in Asian mega cities, we roam through crowded and narrow, widely informal city layouts, where we apply digitalfieldwork equipment and conduct design work. We use low cost cameras and camera drones, tools that had been developed asgadgets for outdoor freaks or plaything for nerds. In this paper, we describe recent advances in the development of amethod of on-site data and image gathering, which allows the processing of concrete 3D models of informal city spaces. Thevisual quality of these models is still moderate, but the resulting three-dimensional spatial puzzlemakes a widelyinaccessible and undocumented piece of city terrain visible, understandable and designable. summary Damage in façades rendering is a problem that has been much discussed currently since such damage is important to the degradation process of building. There are many techniques to verify damages in façades and in other external parts of buildings; however, some techniques have restrictions regarding their practical applications. This work deals with the application of the remote sensing (RM) technique. Such technique derives from the need to identify, locate and scale, quickly, accurately and without human risk, the existing damage or potential damages that may appear in the façades of buildings. Moreover, the RM technique may help to detect damages not visible at long distance or in location of difficult access. This technique is performed by corrected high-resolution panoramic images generated from a mosaic of pictures taken with a standard digital camera coupled in a robotic platform. The Itamaraty Palace, a government building, located in Brasília - DF (Brazil), is the object of the present study. The correction of the Itamaraty Palace panoramic image was carried out so that the identification, quantification and mapping of the Palace façade damages were performed using specific softwares such as GigaPan Stitch, AutoCAD and ArcGIS.

summary This paper outlines an approach to adaptive residential design explored through recent research and an executed prototype, the North House project (2007-2009), undertaken through an interdisciplinary collaboration of researchers and students from the University of Waterloo, Ryerson University and Simon Fraser University in concert with professional and industry partners. This project aimed to develop a framework for the delivery of adaptive detached residential buildings capable of net-zero energy performance in the temperate climate zone, or the near north. Within this project, the term “adaptive” is developed across several tracts of conceptualization and execution including site and climatically derived models for building material composition and envelope ratios, environmentally-responsive kinetic envelope components, intelligent HVAC controls and interactive interface design aimed at producing co-evolutionary behaviors between building systems and inhabitants. A provisional definition of adaptive architecture is outlined to address this range of considerations that calls into question the stable image of domestic architecture and its relationship to energy and contemporary assumptions regarding sustainable design. This paper also outlines computational approaches to design optimization, distributed building systems integration and the human-controls interfaces applicable to the home’s ecology of physical and information technologies.

summary A shape grammar formalism is elaborated for the Vienna Workshop (Wiener Werkstaette) designer Josef Hoffmann’s two designs. Early instances of abstract expressionism are traced in Hoffman’s works by investigating stylistic parallels through shape rules and computations. The analysis of Hoffmann’s two works are carried out in parallel to Terry Knight’s analysis of De Stijl artists Georges Vantongerloo and Fritz Glarner paintings with the normal form grammars.

summary The paper presents a critique of the Shape Grammar paradigm viewed through the lens of the incompleteness theorem of Gödel. Shape Grammars have been extensively researched through many lenses. Their productive systemic nature was the focus of the first papers along with more recent treatises in the field while their use in analysis of known building styles has been extensive and a proven mechanism for style analysis. It is surprising though that use of Shape Grammars in actual design in practice however has been minimal. The architectural community has not actively used the paradigm in the design of real buildings, probably because of the rigid analytical approach to style and rules, following from the academic analysis that the paradigm has been subjected to. However I propose that there is another underlying reason, other than the rigid approach to construct a Shape Grammar. The nature of the concurrent application and creation of the rules lies close to the incompleteness theorem of Gödel, that uses a multitude of Turing Machines to prove that a from a set of True Axioms -A- we will never be able to determine if all sentences are true, without having to invent new axioms, outside the initial set -A-, thus unproven in terms of their true or false nature. Negation of this possibility drives us to the conclusion that true Design can never be feature -complete and thus can never be placed in a trusted framework that we all agree or believe it to be the complete truth.

title Bi-tonal Architectural Narratives: Design Expressions in Manga
source Global Design and Local Materialization[Proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Futures / ISBN 978-3-642-38973-3] Shanghai, China, July 3-5, 2013, pp. 187-197.
summary Bi-tonal, or black and white architectural renderings are a common medium to present an architectural design that goes beyond factual representations of dimensions of length, width and height, materials, structure or technical details. They aim to engage their audience with visual aspects as well as emotional reactions. An architectural presentation that is based on a story-telling approach, akin to comic or manga style, adds intangible expressions, which allows communicating key elements as well as concepts, development and overall aspects of a design easily to laypersons and professional alike. This paper presents how designers develop a narrative of their architectural proposals using a bi-tonal visualization and story-telling methodology that communicates design to a wider audience.

summary This paper briefly recounts how computational design has surfaced in the architectural discourse during the recent decades, developing into what is now called parametric design. In this context, the authors argue against Parametricism, an avante garde movement which is limited to the issues of style and aesthetic fitness, whilst an approach that uses parametric modelling, simulation and visualization in an iterative way to generate design solutions for complexities of contemporary design problems is favoured. Following a discussion supported by representative examples from current practice, a possible organizational structure more appropriate to take advantage of digital tools to increase design performance is suggested.
