summary Media façades grant infinitely many faces to a building and can change the architectural meaning of what a façade is. They can also help to transform the face of the building into an over-size communication device for public (Borras, 2010). Contemporary media façades mostly rely on the content of their screens, and only a small number of them physicality of the screen itself. Precedent building façades that incorporate moving componentsareunable to function as displays. In this paper we present a media façade design, titled“Tran[s]quillity”, in which we fuse reconfigurable building com-ponents with display technologies to achieve a unique design. As well as fulfilling the function of a regular media wall -as a crisp screen- we imagine Tran[s]quillity as a transformable kinetic sculpture that can act as a screen of physical depth to introduce greater functionality and interactivity.

summary An enduring consideration within architectural discourse, the notion of performance is intrinsically embedded within design. Over the past several years, architecture has been increasingly attentive to the framework of performance and its potential contributions to contemporary issues within the field. Numerous derivatives of the word perform—for example performance, performative, performalism, performalist—have been applied to architectural contexts within several significant publications providing evidence of the mounting interest of researchers, academics, and theorists to this premise. Within his essay “Architecture as Performative Art,” architect and historian Antoine Picon remarks, “From its Renaissance origins, architecture inherited a concern with effectiveness that other arts did not possess,” (Grobman and Neuman 2012) while also emphasizing that current inquiry into performative criteria within the profession instigates even broader aspirations. Contemporary research surrounding performance in architecture articulates mediated aspirations that negotiate between quantitative and qualitative measures.

summary This paper discusses the changing modes of conception, production and consumption of architecture within the larger open source discourse. Analogies are drawn from the field of computer science to conceptually understand the relevance of ideas like hacktivism, crowdsourcing, open source, social media and user-centric approaches with regard to architecture in the twenty-first century. These ideas are discussed in relationship with the long lineage of research carried out within the architectural community regarding user participation in design. Contemporary interpretation of similar ideas is discussed with relation to how they could be systematically classified based on the nature of the “open” and the “source” as an approach toward design and architecture. Hybridizing these approaches leads to what can be termed as “hackitecture,” a systemic appropriation of the hacker culture and the open source movement as an architectural agency. The essay then argues for an open source framework for architecture where obvious differences between the user and designer are dissolved, and wherein the conception-to-production and eventual conception of the architectural “object” exists as a continuum. Such a framework is discussed with respect to the technological shift emerging within the discipline. The essay concludes with the possibility of situating such processes within the larger post-capitalist sociopolitical turmoil seen today while discussing the problematics of such an approach.

summary Nowadays the use of computational design processes in architecture is a common practice which is currently recovering a set of theories connected to computer science developed in the 60`s and 70`s. Back then, such pioneering experiences were carried out by an interest in employing scientific principles and methodologies in architectural design, which, with the help of computers, were developed in Research Centres mainly located in the USA and the UK. Looking into this period, this paper investigates the relevance of the German design school of the Hochschule für Gestaltung of Ulm to the birth of computation in architecture. Even though there were no computers in the school, this paper argues that the innovative pedagogies introduced by a group of distinct professors built clear foundations that can be understood as being at the basis of further computational approaches in architecture.This paper focuses on the remarkable work done by Tomas Maldonado. His contribution was paramount in the emergence of analogical ways of computer design thinking. This analysis ultimately wants to emphasize how the HfG Ulm’s role and its scientific approach have paved the way for the onset of the computational era in architecture.

title Making Ripples: Rethinking pedagogy in the digital age

summary This essay presents a pedagogical model for beginning design that introduces digital fabrication methods through an integrated learning framework. Ripples - a wall sculpture made collectively by all second year architecture and interior design students as a joint project between studio, graphics and shop—exemplifies design practice as a collective activity. In this example, solutions emerge out of interactions among multiple stakeholders through iterative experimentation and optimization. The goal of this essay is to provoke a rethinking of the status-quo pedagogical practices in order to incorporate digital fabrication within existing curricular structures as a core skill for beginning design students, rather than merely as a technology course elected by a few students. Conclusions suggest the relevance to broader contexts of lessons learned from this modest experiment.

summary This work in progress presents the framework for an information system to be used as a first step in the generation of a communication protocol for adaptable designs and adaptable constructive systems. Using the chemoton model developed by Tibor Gánti as a basic information network structure which answers some of the questions about what adaptability means in living forms; extracting the characteristics of such adaptable systems we continue to describe how this information network can be applied in the state of contemporary adaptable architecture and it _s design methods. Finally it describes the state of the simulation experiments taken in course by us in the search to generate adaptable communication protocols between robotic building elements.

summary Computer Aided Architectural Design (CAAD) decisions and judgments have been at the heart of architectural design practice. Despite the increasing popularity of computer aided design applications, measuring the decision making of designers empirically remains elusive. Past research claiming usefulness of the CAD has relied largely on anecdotal or case studies that are vulnerable to bias. The study reviews results of prior investigations. The relatively few laboratory experiments report hardly any empirical results regarding the measurement of CAD decision making. The study provides an overview of the literature of existing measurement methods that have been used in psychology and neuroscience to assess individual variations in design making, and highlight these different measurement methods’ strengths and weaknesses. We conclude with a comparative evaluation of the different measures and provide suggestions regarding their constructive use in building realistic theories of designer’s decision making measurement.

summary Accessibility of information for the visually-impaired has greatly benefited from information and communication technologies (ICT’s) in the past decades. However, the interpretation of images by the blind still represents a challenge. Bidimensional representations can be understood by those who have seen at least sometime in their lives but they are too abstract for those with congenital blindness, for whom three-dimensional representations are more effective, especially during the conceptualization phase, when children are still forming mental images of the world. Ideally, educators who work with the visually-impaired should be able to produce custom 3D models as they are needed for the explanation of concepts. This paper presents an undergoing project that aims at developing a protocol for making 3D technologies technically and economically available to them.

summary Methods of architectural representation are often considered fixed, scripted and defined.Methods are learned and acquired through the memorization and comprehension of specific rule sets. While these rules and conventions allow for legibility and communication between various sites, participants and drawings, they also have tendency to produce similar results. This paper considers the potential of manufacturing architectural methods through a detailed study of historic modes of representation. It examines the drawings of the Italian architect Guarino Guarini (1624-1683) and demonstrates the means by which he adapted stereotomic methods and Euclidian propositions to respond to specific architectural conditions. It argues that Guarini’s engagementwith the details of both method and instrumentality offer potential to the current studies in the development of form finding methodologies. If we are to continue to expand the methodological framework of architectural production through slow and tedious instrumental work, we must apply the same level of analysis to our historical precedents. Doing so will enable a finer grained manipulation of instrumentality through an increased focus not on the manufacturing of form but rather the manufacturing of method. Examples of drawings by the author and of students explain and support the text.

summary This paper presents reflections stemmed from a research that seeks to cast a gaze toward the diversity of ways of living in communities, starting from the interaction in communicational processes structured by digital means. This paper introduces findings on the possibilities of similarities between people of different groups in a community in hybrid instances, starting from cultural activities. Further explorations about the potential and qualifications of the use of digital media for this purpose will also be presented. The trials that comprise the object of reflection in this article took place and were only achievable for being part of a larger public policy project, funded by an important Brazilian research funding agency. The project has been in development since March 2010 by the research group of a recognized leading university and involves post-doctoral, doctoral and master researchers. Additionally, the project has partnership with various third sector institutions such as NGOs and collectives, as well as music bands and European universities.

summary The main goal of this article is to provide a critical reflection on what computing may contribute to an open understanding of performance in architecture. We propose a phenomenological approach to computing since it combines several concepts concerning the user’s experience of space. In order to study the human movement in space, we will present the results of a sequence of applications using open source software Processing, including time-lapse movies, frame differencing analysis and blending images tools. The research used the context of a existent building at the campus of Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo. A series of interviews with users were also conducted in order to validate the computing analysis.

summary This paper offers perspectives on emerging trends in materiality and digital fabrication. It explores effects on communication practices and investigates how this changing materiality of data impacts collaboration and interoperability within design and making. Computer numerical controlled (CNC) routing and laser-cutting services are available in most major cities. Affordable kits for 3D printers, CNC routers and DIY KUKA robots are available across the Internet. A considerable part of the attraction of these tools is the ability to fabricate physical goods without detailed fabrication knowledge. We look at this phenomenon through two sets of examples, making furniture with a CNC router and making robots and tangibles with a 3D printer. In our examples it appears materiality remains an important factor throughout the process. We unpick these examples to shed light on how the technology impacts knowledge practices and ways of thinking during design and making.

summary The primary issue in northeastern Siberia is the continuing recession of permafrost due to the degraded condition of the grassland ecology, which will amplify global warming. The release of ancient gas stored in the permafrost will accelerate the greenhouse effect and catastrophically affect the health of the planet. The restoration of Pleistocene-like conditions can actively combat this potential danger through gas sequestration in the roots of grasses and a stable layer of permafrost. Once reintroduced to the region, large herd animals will play an integral role in maintaining their own ecosystem. The use of digital sensing and robotics surpasses human capability to create a relationship between these large herding herbivores and the grassland tundra landscape in order to help stabilize and reestablish the Siberian permafrost. Robotic herding rovers tirelessly traverse the vast territory of Siberia equipped with instruments and satellite communication to continuously read and adjust to ground conditions, fostering an emergent ecology. These cooperative technologies aid in the reconstruction of a grassland ecosystem with the ability to prevent permafrost from thawing and potentially mitigate negative consequences of global warming.

summary For the Toraja people in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, the engraved ornament (Passura’) means more than a simple decorative element. More importantly, Passura’ also serves as a symbolic icon to convey spiritual messages. However, only few people actually understand the underlying meaning behind the ornament. Consequently, those without this knowledge can only appreciate the aesthetic dimension of Passura’. Our computational design research focuses on under-standing the visual–linguistic aspect of Passura’ using Descriptive Grammar method to investigate how meanings are embedded on the ornaments. The design rules and their description are synthesized into a shape-to-text grammar that can read the ornament as a text, and into a text-to-shape grammar that can write a text into an ornamental design. Preliminary results of this grammar demonstrate how Passura’ works as an active indigenous communication device, rather than simply being a passive decorative element.

summary Assimilating Interactive Technology into Architectural Design – A Quest for developing an ‘Architectural Drawing’ for Urban Interaction Design as a Communication Platform Through Combining Physical Sensing Devices with Simulation Software The research presented in this paper investigates the need for an equivalent of architectural drawings for urban interaction design in an architectural scale in order to communicate interaction design intentions to design participants and clients through using state of the art computer, gaming and sensor technologies. The paper discusses two projects (a) Blur Building, as a large scale interaction design project executed through an experienced team and (b) presents as student design project coordinated by the researchers as a reference project. Both projects in this paper are discussed and evaluated from an Urban Interaction Design point of view. This   paper   emphasizes   the   significance   for   establishing ‘drawing’ equivalents for urban interaction design, discussing representation of ideas in architectural design; followed by outlining existing methods of interactive design representation, such as storyboards to then introduce current advancements in gaming environments. The following paper introduces a framework for future research projects that will design, deploy and evaluate of prototypes as a communication platform combining physical sensing devices in combination with gaming engines to enable a digital / physical hybrid. This would allow designers and clients to test, evaluate and improve urban interactions in a design phase prior to completing the project.

summary Bi-tonal, or black and white architectural renderings are a common medium to present an architectural design that goes beyond factual representations of dimensions of length, width and height, materials, structure or technical details. They aim to engage their audience with visual aspects as well as emotional reactions. An architectural presentation that is based on a story-telling approach, akin to comic or manga style, adds intangible expressions, which allows communicating key elements as well as concepts, development and overall aspects of a design easily to laypersons and professional alike. This paper presents how designers develop a narrative of their architectural proposals using a bi-tonal visualization and story-telling methodology that communicates design to a wider audience.

summary Bi-tonal and non-photorealistic architectural depictions can be employed to develop a narrative that engages the reader with both visual aspects and other emotional reactions. Using this story-telling approach to communicate architectural design is subsequently not only represented through its factual dimensions of length, width and height, materials, structure or technical details, but is extended to intangible sensorial realms, which gains special value for laypersons and professional alike. This paper presents how architects and laypersons develop a narrative of their architectural design proposals or concepts using a visualisation and story-telling tools that generates designs akin to Japanese cartoons or manga. Our paper presents the methodology, the instruments used and highlights on the base of representative samples of how narrative bitonal depictions of architecture contributes to the overall understanding of an architectural design and how non tangible factors aid the designers in their communication.
