summary This paper presents the design of a novel material system with sensing, form-changing and luminous capacities for responsive and kinetic architecture. This aim is explored and evaluated through an experimental design investigation in the form of an architectural skin. Through experimentation with alternative materials and a rigorous process of designing the responsive material systems,a new architectural skin, namely Blanket, emerged from this research. The newly developed responsive material system is an amalgamation of silicone rubbers and glowing pigments, molded and fabricated in a prescribed way—embedded with shape memory alloys on a tensegrity skeletal structure to achieve the desired morphing properties and absorb solar energy to glow in the dark.Thus, the design investigation explores the potential of the use of form-changing materials with capacitance sensing, energy absorbing and illumination capabilities for a morphing architectural skin that is capable of responding to proximity and lighting stimuli. This lightweight, flexible and elastic architectural morphing skin is designed to minimize the use of discrete mechanical components. It moves towards an integrated “synthetic” morphing architecture that can sense and respond to environmental and occupancy conditions.

summary This paper documents preliminary research into a bending-active architecture that leverages the “bundling” of linear force-active elements in order to create spatial diversity and differentiation.The primary design components of the system are light-weight GFRP rods and tubes that perform well in elastic bending. Material testing and iterative physical model studies are documented, and provide a framework to guide the further development of emerging spring-based computation methods. Challenges to the system include the analysis and resolution of rod-to-rod bundled connections, as well as the development of predictable bifurcation and crossing unions. The paperidentifies key precedents to the work followed by a brief summary of the material selection and testing framework. A speculative taxonomy of bundled bending-active “types” is proposed and supported by examples and prototypes.

summary Location-based mobile applications have been a rising theme for academics in the field of urbanism and in urban and transportation, because of the potential of transformation they might bring to the urban landscape (De Souza e Silva, 2013). One of the possibilities we study here is to observe social encounters fostered by commuting rides. In this paper, we try to examine the practice from the broad perspective of estimating the environmental benefits, in a context where digital information technology is wielded to address problems old and new (Townsend, 2014). This paper aims to analyze the potential of transformations that new ICTs bring to urban mobility, using as case study the official ridesharing system of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, the Carona? project. The system was developed focusing on the reduction of the number of motorized trips to the University, as well as the amount of CO2 generated by them. Here we analyze the dynamics of ridesharing, using the system data, and also try to observe the role it may play towards the promotion of integration in the UFRJ community.

summary This paper questions the current use of materials in architecture, which furthers the preference of surface and form over inherent material properties. It then investigates recent advancements towards the notion of a Digital Materiality, comparing various international research activities and approaches. It concludes with the potentials of Smart Materials for the creation of dynamic, adaptive spatial design. With a focus on the work of the Author it represents a number of projects that have been realized in this area within the past years and gives an insight in his recently established Materiability Research Network, a community platform that reveals Smart Materials, their properties and how to self-make them in an applied hands-on manner.

summary By looking at time-tested recurrent design patterns drawn from Portuguese vernacular settlements, the present research tries to address the problem of developing sustainable urban solutions for scattered low density territories throughout Portugal. The research departs from the hypothesis that Portuguese vernacular settlements contain morphological characteristics that can be captured and reused in new designs: this may be particularly useful for rethinking extensive suburban territories’ densification conditions, in order to enhance both their consistency and sustainability. Urban sprawl and uncontrolled space consumption have often hastened the problem of territorial sustainability, that’s the reason why completing, restructuring and enhancing dispersed built environments is of paramount importance in order to foster both cultural and economical sustainability in contemporary Portugal. This project ultimately aims at contributing towards the definition of design procedures and planning tools for the re-urbanization of extensive urban fabrics. One of the major objectives is developing a decision making support tool for generating meaningful and coherent interventions in dispersed urban fabrics which could foster connectivity, integration and quality of life, by doing so this work tries to propose a novel methodology that could prove to be valuable in different contexts, even outside Portugal.

summary The demand for sustainable buildings with minimal environmental impact and efficient energy use is increasing. The most effective design decisions for sustainable design can be made in the early design phases, but appropriate tools to explore design alternatives and understand their impacts on building energy performance are not available at this stage of the project. The integration of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and parametric modeling is the new trend of building modeling, which can greatly benefit sustainable building design. This research introduces an innovative tool to facilitate integrated parametric BIM and to enhance its applications towards creative, sustainable building design through simulation and optimization. The created tool, Revit2GBSOpt, integrates parametric BIM and building energy performance simulation and enables designers to generate alternative options in BIM to explore the energy performance simulation results automatically. Finding the optimized solution, the BIM model will be updated.

summary This paper investigates the design process of a performance based pavilion from concept towards construction phases, by challenging conventional form and fabrication techniques. The proposed project is considered as a temporary structure, located in Antalya, Turkey. A free-form structure and a parametrically defined cladding are designed to serve as an installation unit, a shading element and urban furniture. The pavilion geometry, performance assessments and proposed fabrication schemes are clearly described in the paper. The method integrates form, performance, material and fabrication constraints and exposes how environmental and structural performances, including Solar Access Analysis and Static Structural Analysis, may inform the design project.

summary The paper describes the development of a set of smart BIM components to facilitate and accelerate the creation of large-scale urban models in the early design phase in a BIM software environment. The components leverage the analytical, parametric and modelling capabilities of the BIM environment to support adaptive parameter-driven building geometry, patterning of different building types, early numerical and graphical design evaluation, various simulation methods and the exploration of design alternatives. The toolset consists of the most common building shapes, but can be extended with additional shapes and their respective area and volumetric calculations when necessary. The rapid large-scale deployment of the components has been achieved by diverting existing tools from their intended use.

summary Computational embryogenies are a special kind of genotype to phenotype mapping process widely used inexplorative evolutionary systems as they provide the mechanism for generating more complex solutions. This paper focuses on how designers explore embryogenies for specific design scenariosthrough an adaptive-iterative process.The process is demonstratedfor a complex project to generate a prototypical urban farm in Singapore. It is shown that by employing an adaptive-iterative process, the embryogeny can be made progressively more complex and less abstract, thereby allowing the exploration to be guided by the designer.

summary As architectural design methodologies focus increasingly on the production of dynamic form, the means to actuate these forms, the input that fuels parametric processes, analytical form-generating techniques and responsive controls is of primary concern. In the virtual test beds where systems are developed, inputs are often ad-hoc, based on crude assumptions of the environment, or disconnected from the physical environment entirely.Inverting a technique originally developed to illuminate virtual objects with light captured from real (physical) environments, this project explores image-based lighting as a means of detailed environmental light sensing. The objective of the project is to demonstrate the application of High Dynamic Range (HDR) image data acquired continuously in the physical world as signal input to inform, actuate and evaluate responsive solar control and daylighting systems. As a proof of concept, a virtual hemispherical dome consisting of 145 apertures is controlled to respond in real time to continuous image-based measurements of sky luminance, seeking a defined set of daylighting and solar control objectives. The paper concludes by discussing the implications of incorporating real-world environmental data in the development of dynamic form.

summary The aims of the Flexing Wind project, investigated in an intensive cross-disciplinary course, were twofold. First was to learn about aerodynamic phenomena around buildings. Second was to explore ways to observe, measure, and control the negative effects of wind around specific pedestrian areas, tram stops, and public sites in Melbourne City. Using tools such as a weather station to collect data and CFD software to simulate aerodynamic phenomena students could study the wind conditions in one of the windiest areas in the Melbourne downtown. Various do-it-yourself tools such as mini wind tunnels, handheld probes and sensors were used to evaluate the performance of potential design options, which lead to prototyping full scale adaptive architectural windbreaks.

summary Over the past decade, there has been an increasing interest in exploring the capacity of built spaces to respond dynamically and adapt to changes in the external and internal environments. Such explorations are technologically and socially motivated, in response to recent technological and cultural developments. Advances in embedded computation, material design, and kinetics on the technological side, and increasing concerns about sustainability, social and urban changes on the cultural side, provide a background for responsive/interactive architectural solutions that have started to emerge. This paper presents an ongoing design research project driven by an interest in adaptive systems in nature and a desire to explore the capacity of built spaces to respond dynamically. The paper underlines architecture’s inseparable link to technology and projects a vision of architecture that, through its capacity to change and adapt, becomes an integrated, responsive, adaptive and productive participant within larger ecologies.

summary In order to design adaptable systems, the requirements include flexible models to generate a range of alternative configurations, analytical engines to evaluate performance, and well-defined selection criteria to identify suitable options. In most cases, design processes driven by performance concentrate on environmental or structural parameters; fabrication often remains disconnected from the generative process. Nonetheless, as design-to-fabrication methods become more robust, it is possible to extend the digital process to introduce fabrication variables to the definition of the project. The main focus of the research presented in this paper is the development of a digital and material workflow that connects design, structural and climate-specific topics (such as sun lighting and water drainage) toward producing a range of efficient structural and spatial assemblies.A case study serves as the main support for this investigation. Miguel Fisac’s “bones” is a light-weight roof system developed during the 1960’s, which had a very well-calibrated structural, natural-lighting, drainage and construction performance, as well as a highly refined spatial output. The system, despite its intelligence, lacked the flexibility possible today: using digital technologies, it can adapt to a significantly wider range of applications. Using “bones” as a starting point, this research develops a design-to-fabrication workflow that attempts to move forward tools, material systems and processes to enable an adaptable tectonic system.This paper describes the background research, concept, form-finding, construction process, methodology, results and conclusions of the investigation.

summary Even though interactive (Offermans et.al., 2013), adaptive (Viani et.al., 2017), and self-optimizable (Sun et.al., 2020) lighting systems are becoming readily available, designing system automations, and evaluating their impact on user experience significantly challenges designers. In this paper we demonstrate the use of a gaming engine as a platform for designing, simulating, and evaluating autonomous smart lighting behaviors. We establish the Human - Lighting System Interaction Framework, a computational framework for developing a Light Sculpting Engine and for designing occupant-system interactions. Our results include a. a method for combining in real-time lighting IES profiles into a single ‘combined’ profile - b. algorithms that optimize in real-time, lighting configurations - c. direct glare elimination algorithms, and d. system energy use optimization algorithms. Overall, the evolution from designing static building components to designing interactive systems necessitates the reconsideration of methods and tools that allow user experience and system performance to be tuned by design.

User interaction and recorded statistics from the system’s core algorithm are assessed, in relation to the capacity of this prototype to provide an alternative methodology of describing collective intelligence, while presenting a non-standard perspective of body-space interaction and design as entertaining art. The overall impact is discussed in relation to the examined observations, towards a potential advancement to a system of superior contextual understanding.
