summary This paper discusses a course that addresses the integration between generative design and digital fabrication in the context of reconfiguring architectural space. The objective of the course, offered for 3rd year architecture students at the Department of Architecture, Ain Shams University, Egypt, was to design and fabricate interior design elements to be installed within the department lobby. Students worked in digital and physical environments to develop 8 group projects that featured concepts of shape grammars, L-systems, fractals and cellular automata. The potential of the realized projects is discussed in terms of 3D development of systems, contextual generative design, and pedagogical objectives.

summary The Garifuna are a group of people that live on the northern coast of Honduras and the coast of Belize. They have a very distinct and vibrant culture. Minority cultures are currently absorbed by mainstreamed cultures and the Garifuna ethnicity is directly influenced by this phenomenon. In this research it is of special concern to encapsulate Garifuna vernacular architecture by means of shape grammars. The research provides a clear documentation of the grammars implemented in Grasshopper, as well as discusses about the issues of embedding shape grammars in the Rhino/Grasshopper environment.

summary A shape grammar formalism is elaborated for the Vienna Workshop (Wiener Werkstaette) designer Josef Hoffmann’s two designs. Early instances of abstract expressionism are traced in Hoffman’s works by investigating stylistic parallels through shape rules and computations. The analysis of Hoffmann’s two works are carried out in parallel to Terry Knight’s analysis of De Stijl artists Georges Vantongerloo and Fritz Glarner paintings with the normal form grammars.

summary This paper presents an analytical shape grammar to study the designs of the ornamental blocks in Frank Lloyd Wright’s Californian Textile Block Houses. The paper introduces the textile block system and expands on the design of the Millard house as a case study. The paper presents two formalistic applications of the shape grammar to generate the original block design: one as a sequential shape grammar and the other as a parallel shape grammar. Both examples are able to generate the same results; and they hint at the potential to expand the shape grammar to generate other design alternatives.

summary A shape grammar was developed for analyzing the evolution of Maputo´s slums with the strategic objective of capturing the evolution of house types and understanding the social agreements behind the spatial relations of their house elementary spaces in order to reuse such rules for the purpose of rehabilitation. This paper shows preliminary results of the research and aims at developing, based on the resulting grammars, a parametric tool able to execute morphological analyses, simulations and generate improved design solutions for the qualification of Maputo´s informal settlements.

summary Mass customization is pointed as a means of improving a company’s competitiveness, which is an essential trait in Europe’s economic situation of today. This paper reports a mockup implementation of the mass customization paradigm to ceramic tableware design, through the use of shape grammars, parametric modelling and rapid prototyping. Focus is emphasized on the initial development of a parametric shape grammar as a design system, operating on curved surfaces and solids. Mapping operations are suggested for dealing with the formal complexity of these shapes. This initial academic experiment poses as a first step into the development of a mass customization system that is expected to meet industry standards.

summary This study was accomplished in the context of a broader research to be developed in an ongoing PhD program in architecture. The purpose of this study is to give a perspective of the research progress and to present a shape grammar simplification that will be improved to assist the rehabilitation design process of the bourgeois house of Oporto.The typology of the bourgeois house of Oporto, built from the late sixteenth century until the early twentieth century, is dominant in the ancient fabric of the city and in need of rehabilitation. From the analysis of a representative sample of a moment of its evolution, it is possible to verify patterns and to define rules.This first approach intends to validate the use of shape grammars as a tool, able to assist the architect in the rehabilitation design process of the bourgeois house of Oporto.

summary This article shows the result of generating a 3d model of Loggia Rucellai in Florence using a shape grammar from Leon Batista Alberti’s treatise De Re Aedificatoria and it is a test bed for further generations of buildings using Alberti’s rules. It shows the accuracy of such grammar to help tracing the degree of influence of Alberti’s treatise in Renaissence Portuguese architecture. Rucellai palace facade ornaments and its interior loggia where used to analyze and compare the Loggia generation accuracy. A Grasshopper script is used for the automation of the rules derivation. An evaluation process is presented and its use aims to better understand the deviations between the treatise and the Loggia grammars.

summary This paper describes a generative design approach integrating real building data in the process of developing a shape grammar. The goal is to assess to which extent it is feasible the use of a reverse engineering procedure to acquire actual building data and what kind of impact it may have on the development of a shape grammar.The paper describes the use of Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) techniques to acquire information on the São Vicente de Fora church, then the use of such information to develop the corresponding shape grammar, and finally the comparison of this grammar with the grammar of Alberti’s treatise, to determine the grammatical transformations that occurred between the two grammars.

title Some Notes on the Incompleteness Theorem and Shape Grammars

summary The paper presents a critique of the Shape Grammar paradigm viewed through the lens of the incompleteness theorem of Gödel. Shape Grammars have been extensively researched through many lenses. Their productive systemic nature was the focus of the first papers along with more recent treatises in the field while their use in analysis of known building styles has been extensive and a proven mechanism for style analysis. It is surprising though that use of Shape Grammars in actual design in practice however has been minimal. The architectural community has not actively used the paradigm in the design of real buildings, probably because of the rigid analytical approach to style and rules, following from the academic analysis that the paradigm has been subjected to. However I propose that there is another underlying reason, other than the rigid approach to construct a Shape Grammar. The nature of the concurrent application and creation of the rules lies close to the incompleteness theorem of Gödel, that uses a multitude of Turing Machines to prove that a from a set of True Axioms -A- we will never be able to determine if all sentences are true, without having to invent new axioms, outside the initial set -A-, thus unproven in terms of their true or false nature. Negation of this possibility drives us to the conclusion that true Design can never be feature -complete and thus can never be placed in a trusted framework that we all agree or believe it to be the complete truth.

summary The research presented further is part of the Digital Alberti research project, which aims to determine the influence of Alberti’s treatise on Architecture, De re aedificatoria, on the Portuguese Renaissance architecture, through the use of a computational framework. One of the project tasks entailed the translation of the treatise’s textual descriptions concerning the morphological, proportional and algorithmic principles of the sacred buildings into a shape grammar. Subsequently a computational model was developed, in order to proceed to the derivation of examples of the same language. This article discusses the use of analytical shape grammars to undertake an architectural analysis, as well as the fact of the source of this grammar and correspondent architectural language to be a text instead of a set of buildings and designs. It reviews the methodology to implement the shape grammar and describes the several stages of development, following the interpretation of treatise into a consistent set of shape rules, by defining their spatial relations, parameters and conditions. It also reviews the implementation of this knowledge into a generative parametric computer program through visual programming language Grasshopper.

summary We introduce a formal grammar as a computational approach to the generation of design. While existing shape-grammars transform primitive shapes as lines or rectangles, the presented production system specifically addresses polyhedral objects described by three-dimensional meshes composed of vertices, edges and faces. The parameters of the transformation rules are sensitive to topological and topographical properties of the selected input mesh. We demonstrate that this approach allows the creation of new ornamental structures and can lead to a new language of architectural forms.

summary The idea of ‘city’ has now surpassed its physical concept. The emergence of the Internet and the growing development of information and communication technologies (ICT) have changed the behaviour of our society in the past decade and revolutionised the traditional ways of representing space. The classic 2D (floor plans, sections and elevations) and 3D representations have been gradually replaced by 3D digital models that can reproduce buildings and places in a virtual environment.3D digital models are tools that enable a wide range of applications in urban planning and management, especially in architectural and data documentation where they allow the analysis of theoretical scenarios such as: 1) representation of the past, considering the procedures needed to restore the heritage; 2) visualisation of the present, to enable dissemination and communication of the city as it is; and, 3) simulation of the future, with the model being used to visualise and experiment with architectural objects, even those at a design stage. The main contribution of this work is to present an urban application developed into a GeoBIM tool, ESRI City Engine Software (CE), that integrates GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and BIM (Building Information Modelling) concepts. Finally, to enhance its potential, three spatial analyses were conducted.

summary Visual rules are powerful in loosely capturing the impact of material behavior on form in designer’s hands-on experimentation. They present a first step to translate the causal relations between material and form to computation without sacrificing the uncertainties in the designer’s interaction with the materials. summary We present and discuss a didactic for augmenting architectural design education with computational design techniques via integrative feedback loops and show examples of student projects. Our goal is to embed new technical skills into existing design abilities as quickly as possible, in order to enable our students to exploit and explore the extended capabilities of digital design techniques within the framework of architectural design projects. We instigate a process of continuous mutual feedback between different fields: on the one hand between technique-based exercises and design-related steps, and on the other hand between the digital and the physical. Through oscillation and feedback, the newly learned skills are directly interwoven with the existing ones. Special emphasis is put on the illuminative effects of transitions between different media and on issues of fabrication.

summary Shape-memory polymers (SMPs) are an emerging class of “smart materials” that have dual-shape capability. They are able to undergo significant deformation when exposed to an external stimulus such as heat or light. SMPs have been widely investigated within the biomedicine and aerospace industries; however, their potential has yet to be explored within an architectural framework. The research presented in this paper begins an investigation into the morphological behavior ofSMPs toward a deployable, adaptive architecture. The structure’s ease of assembly, compact storage, transportability and configurable properties offer promising applications in emergency and disaster relief shelters, lightweight recreational structures and a variety of other applications in the temporary construction and aerospace industry. This paper explores the use of SMPs through the development of a dynamic actuator that links a series of interconnected panels creating overall form to a self-standing structure. The shape-shifting behavior of the SMP allows the dynamic actuator to become flexible when storage and transportability are required. Alternatively, when exposed to the appropriate temperature range, the actuator is capable of returning to its memorized state for on-site deployment. Through a series ofprototypes, this paper will provide a fundamental understanding of the SMP’s thermo-mechanicalproperties toward deployable, adaptive architecture.

title POP-OP: A Shape Memory-Based Morphing Wall

summary Recent tendencies in architecture take a unique point of view, with aesthetically novel and unnatural sensibilities emerging from a close scrutiny and study of apparently natural systems. These tendencies are being driven by mathematical and computational abstractions that transform the way we understand the matterinformation relationship. This project was inspired by Op Art, a twentieth century art movement and style in which artists sought to create an impression of movement on an image surface by means of an optical illusion. Passive elements consisting of composite laminates were produced with the goal of creating lightweight, semi-rigid, and nearly transparent pieces. The incorporation of active materials comprised a unique aspect of this project: the investigation of surface movement through controlled and repeatable deformation of the composite structure using shape memory alloy (SMA) wiring technology. The integration of composite materials with SMA wiring and Arduino automation control resulted in an architectural wall that incorporated perceptual and actual motion.
