summary Mass customization is pointed as a means of improving a company’s competitiveness, which is an essential trait in Europe’s economic situation of today. This paper reports a mockup implementation of the mass customization paradigm to ceramic tableware design, through the use of shape grammars, parametric modelling and rapid prototyping. Focus is emphasized on the initial development of a parametric shape grammar as a design system, operating on curved surfaces and solids. Mapping operations are suggested for dealing with the formal complexity of these shapes. This initial academic experiment poses as a first step into the development of a mass customization system that is expected to meet industry standards.

summary We present a design-computation method of design-to-production automation and optimization in digital fabrication; an algorithmic process minimizing material use, reducing fabrication time and improving production costs of complex architectural form. Our system compacts structural elements of variable dimensions within fixed-size sheets of stock material, revisiting a classical challenge known as the two-dimensional bin-packing problem. We demonstrate improvements in performance using our heuristic metric, an approach with potential for a wider range of architectural and engineering design-built digital fabrication applications, and discuss the challenges of constructing free-form design efficiently using operational research methodologies.

summary We present and discuss a didactic for augmenting architectural design education with computational design techniques via integrative feedback loops and show examples of student projects. Our goal is to embed new technical skills into existing design abilities as quickly as possible, in order to enable our students to exploit and explore the extended capabilities of digital design techniques within the framework of architectural design projects. We instigate a process of continuous mutual feedback between different fields: on the one hand between technique-based exercises and design-related steps, and on the other hand between the digital and the physical. Through oscillation and feedback, the newly learned skills are directly interwoven with the existing ones. Special emphasis is put on the illuminative effects of transitions between different media and on issues of fabrication.

summary The central theme of the paper is the introduction of hands-on tools showing the integration of information technology within a postgraduate study program (MAS LA) for landscape architects. What has already become a part of the discourse in the field of architecture – generic design – is now also finding more resonance in the context of large-scale landscape architectural design. If one studies the educational backgrounds of landscape architects, however, they often do not match the same standard as those of architects. A solid background in the area of innovative use of information technology, especially computer-assisted design and CAD/CAM construction is only at a preliminary state at most universities. The critical arguments in the choice of the selected medium and the building up of a continuous digital chain stand here in the forefront. The aim is not to improve the quality of the landscape design based on the variety of the applied tools, but rather through the sensible use of the said. Reflections as well as questions of method and theory stand at the forefront of our efforts.

summary Rethinking Comprehensive Design—the 19th International Conference on Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA 2014)—emphasises a cross-disciplinary context to challenge the mainstream culture of computational design in architecture. It aims to (re)explore the potential of computational design methods and technologies in architecture from a holistic perspective. The conference provides an international forum where academics and practitioners share their novel research development and reflection for defining the future of computation in architectural design. Hosted by the Department of Design, Engineering and Management at the Kyoto Institute of Technology, CAADRIA 2014 presents 88 peer-reviewed full papers from all over the world. These high-quality research papers are complimented by 34 short work-in-progress papers submitted for the poster session of the conference. The conference proceedings were produced by a motivated team of volunteers from the CAADRIA community through an extensive collaboration. The 88 full papers rigorously double-blind reviewed by the dedicated International Review Committee (consisting of 74 experts), testify to CAADRIA’s highly respectable international standing. Call for abstracts sent out in July 2013 attracted 298 submissions. They were initially reviewed by the Paper Selection Committee who accepted 198 abstracts for further development. Of these, 118 full papers were eventually submitted in the final stage. Each submitted paper was then assessed by at least two members of the International Review Committee. Following the reviewers’ recommendations, 91 papers were accepted by the conference, of which 88 are included in this volume and for presentation in CAADRIA 2014. Collectively, these 88 papers define Rethinking Comprehensive Design in terms of the following research streams: Shape Studies; User Participation in Design; Human-Computer Interaction; Digital Fabrication and Construction; Computational Design Analysis; New Digital Design Concepts and Strategies; Practice-Based and Interdisciplinary Computational Design Research; Collaborative and Collective Design; Generative, Parametric and Evolutionary Design; Design Cognition and Creativity; Virtual / Augmented Reality and Interactive Environments; Computational Design Research and Education; and Theory, Philosophy and Methodology of Computational Design Research. summary In contemporary world, digital technologies have initiated new architectural languages and have eased the way to communicate them directly from initial design phase to production facilities, allowing for the construction of complex geometries with the use of ever evolving techniques and tools. When the emergence of a substance depends on the material behavior, the design interest shifts towards the ‘formation’ instead of the ‘final form’. Regarding these the design procedures will be discussed from the premise where architecture will be perceived through an evolution process that deals with the coherent variables of elements and shifting parameters within a context. However, there are crucial questions about its application in the contexts which have lower access to contemporary technologies although digital technology has already influenced almost every aspects of the culture of the respective context. Besides, the huge production cost has limited its adaptability in many under developed and developing countries where the construction field relies mainly on traditional and low-tech methods. The paper is an effort to give attention on exploration of the new-found freedoms of material computation in close connection with the respective context by inventing new design processes, material applications and custom devices. It is the time to experiment with flexible, mobile and low-cost fabrication methods applicable to different scenarios while achieving the complexity of the contemporary architectural ge¬ometries. Thus an equal focus has to be given to speculate about projects that are site-specific, custom¬ized and adapted to local climatic conditions and technical know-how, in areas that traditionally have limited access to new technologies.

summary Public transport interchanges often involve several stakeholders for planning and decision-making. As a result complexity leads to inefficient processes, leading to indecision, disruption, or costly delays. Consequently, the paper focuses on the application of tools for navigation and prioritization of opportunities in the need finding, fuzzy-front end, or mystery phase as introduced by Martin (2009). The paper outlines in a case study how a multi-stakeholder platform can progress from complete ambiguity in project definition through to clearly defined and understood projects that have a shared intent across the multi-stakeholder platform. These tools have been applied in a public transport context, by demonstrating the process of integrating digital innovation into various stakeholders through a participatory research process. The paper introduces the research background; discusses the hypothesis; outlines the case study; emphasizes its significance for multi-stakeholder decision-making and discusses the opportunities for the built environment.

summary Living organisms have evolved effective structural solutions in response to the inherent constraints of their respective environments through a process of morphological adaptation. Given the fact that the majority of natural load bearing materials are fibrous composites, the authors suggest the analysis of appropriate biological role models as a promising strategy for informing the application of fibre reinforced polymers (FRP) in architecture. In this paper the authors present a biomimetic design methodology for seamless large-scale FRP structures involving the analysis of the exoskeletons of Arthropoda with regards to structural performance criteria, the development of a custom robotic filament winding process, and the translation of biological and fabricational principles into the architectural domain through physical prototyping and the development of custom digital tools. The resulting performative material system is evaluated in a full-scale research pavilion.

summary This paper examines how digital scanning techniques can be utilised in the digital fabrication of hybrid materials. It explores how ‘imperfections’ discovered in natural materials can inform unique design solutions. In the first part of this paper, the technical scan-to-production process is explained. Secondly, the paper discusses this new production model against current standardised production processes. Third, the paper introduces ways in which the proposed research method can be incorporated into emerging design practices through three realised projects – Digitized Grain, STP @ Milano Design Week, and Timber X-Ray Scanning; Finally, an assessment of the Research through Design Production over the course of these projects details the key changes in each stage of the STP process.

summary Quality, according to Pirsig’s universal statements, does not belong to the object itself, nor to the subject itself, but to both and to their interactions. In architecture it is terribly true as we have a Building Object and Users that interact with it.The problem we approach here, renouncing at the impossible task of modelling the actor’s “libero arbitrio”, focuses on defining a set of occurrences, which dynamically happen in the built environment. If organized in a proper way, use process knowledge allows planners/designers to represent usage scenario, predicting activity inconsistencies and evaluating the building performance in terms of user experience.With the aim of improving both, the quality of buildings and the user experience, this research explores a method for linking process and product ontologies, formalized to support logic synchronization between software for planning functional activities and software for authoring design of infrastructures.

summary In order to achieve interactive architecture it is necessary to consider more than the technological components of sensors, controllers, and actuators. The interaction can be focused to different interaction activities: instructing, conversing, manipulating, and exploring (we propose to call this the interaction view). Additionally, the purpose of the building may range from performing, sustaining, servicing, symbolising, to entertaining (we propose to call this the world view). Combined, the interaction view and world view establish 20 different attitudes, which are flavours of behaviour for the interactive building. Through attitudes interaction profiles can be established and criteria derived for the design of interactive buildings.

summary This ongoing investigation aims to learn from nature novel material organizations and structural systems in order to develop innovative architectural system. We developed a multidisciplinary approach, using scientific analysis and design research and prototyping. We focus on the study of a “living fossil” fish, whose armor system is so efficient it has remained almost unchanged for millions of years. We investigate its morphological characteristics, its structural properties, the assembly mechanisms and the underlying material properties in order to derive new principles to design new enhanced structural systems. We use micro computerized tomography and scanning electron microscopy to observe microstructures, parametric design to reconstruct the data into digital models and then several 3D printing technologies to prototype systems with high flexibility and adaptive capabilities, proposing new gradual material interfaces and transitions to embed performative capabilities and multifunctional potentials.

summary In this paper we explore the concept and design guidelines for an Autonomous Learning Oriented Proto System (ALOPS), a construction system designed to enhance its own performance through time. Our research has been focused on the fabrication of a prototype for a porous wall system which reacts to light intensities by closing or opening its apertures. Taking that aim, we used a combination of robotics, programing, and material behaviour to endow the system with the capacity to record reactions towards encountered sets of conditions during its active energy periods, allowing the system to use this knowledge database to evolve autonomously by feeding this information back into the computation process. This approach in construction systems opens up the architectural design processes to address the creation of digital memory structures rather than complex algorithms in order to operate specific functions. With this development, the architect could think of architectures constantly evolving by learning from their environments as well as of users forming symbiotic and behavioural bonds with the emergent spatial personalities, thus affecting the underpinning relationships between architecture, user and context.

summary This study presents a digital architectural design tool named “Fuzzy Layout Planner” that helps architects create two dimensional sketchy footprints for their design. The purpose of the tool is to extend limits of early design thinking. It uses fuzzy modeling techniques to adapt the ambiguous design phase. There are several commands in this digital tool to generate and modify layouts. Users can create, move, combine sketchy bubbles to form bigger footprints and see them in action dynamically. The tool offers a manual creation process.

summary The Architecture of ScarCity Game is a board game used as a pedagogical tool that challenges architecture students by involving them in a series of experimental design sessions to understand the design process of scarcity and the actual relation between the craft and the digital. This means "pragmatic delivery processes and material constraints, where the exchange between the artisan of handmade, representing local skills and technology of the digitally conceived is explored" (Huang 2013). The game focuses on understanding the different variables of the crafted design process of traditional communities under conditions of scarcity (Michel and Bevan 1992). This requires first analyzing the spatial environmental model of interaction, available human and natural resources, and the dynamic relationship of these variables in a digital era. In the first stage (Pre-Agency), the game set the concept of the craft by limiting students design exploration from a minimum possible perspective developing locally available resources and techniques. The key elements of the design process of traditional knowledge communities have to be identified (Preez 1984). In other words, this stage is driven by limited resources + chance + contingency. In the second stage (Post-Agency) students taking the architects´ role within this communities, have to speculate and explore the interface between the craft (local knowledge and low technological tools), and the digital represented by computation data, new technologies available and construction. This means the introduction of strategy + opportunity + chance as part of the design process. In this sense, the game has a life beyond its mechanics. This other life challenges the participants to exploit the possibilities of breaking the actual boundaries of design. The result is a tool to challenge conventional methods of teaching and leaning controlling a prescribed design process. It confronts the rules that professionals in this field take for granted. The game simulates a 'fake' reality by exploring in different ways with surveyed information. As a result, participants do not have anything 'real' to lose. Instead, they have all the freedom to innovate and be creative.

summary The research represented in this paper proposes to reinvestigate the relationship between structure and appearance through a performative analysis of textured stainless steel, as verified through full-scale prototyping. The work takes a scientific design approach while incorporating a computational workflow that is informed by the material’s physical parameters, and draws a connection between the scales of molecular composition to large-scale geometric systems.Furthermore, the work attempts to provide evidence for thin-gauge textured metals as a high performance and adaptive material, by identifying structural rigidity and particular specular quality as inherent characteristics born from the texturing process. In addition, through close collaboration with the sponsoring manufacturer of textured stainless steel, we are able to gain access to material expertise and large-scale fabrication equipment not readily available to designers, thereby forging a mutually beneficial relationship surrounding the research.

summary Based on our current daily rate, 85,410 hours is the average amount of time that an adult in the United States will spend on their phone in a lifetime (Howarth 2023). This is time spent texting, tweeting, emailing, snapping, chatting, posting, and interacting with an interface which each of us carry in our pocket. Kelly Dobson explains, “We psychologically view the cell phone as an extension of our bodies, which is why when you accidentally forget it or leave it behind you feel you have lost apart of yourself” (2013). In reality, this device is just one of many technologies which affect our relationship with our bodies and the physical world. Additionally, Zoom meetings, social media networks, on-line shopping, and delivery robots, all increasingly detach our bodies and our senses from our everyday experiences and interactions. In response to digital culture, Liam Young writes, “Perhaps the day will come when we turn off our target ads, navigational prompts, Tinder match notifications, and status updates to find a world stripped bare, where nothing is left but scaffolds and screens” (2015). Make no mistake; the collection of projects shared in these field notes is intended to be a counterpoint to such a prophesied future. However, the intent is not to try to compete with technology, but rather, to consider the built environment itself as an interface, encouraging interaction through feedback and responsivity directly related to human factors, finding ways to re-engage the body through design.

summary This paper presents the design-computation digital fabrication research for a thermoplastic panel technology for housing applications; a high-performance, low-cost building product based on parametric design methodology, glass fiber reinforced composite materials, and numerically controlled robotic fabrication processes. We present a highly integrated schematic design to production workflow, and discuss the potential and challenges of robotic prototyping and fabrication.

summary A design project that explores how augmented reality may be incorporated within architecture to embed hybrid ‘info-tectonic’ detail, across a range of scales is documented. The context in which the project is undertaken is the legacy of South Indian temple design. This opens up a complimentary field of research within a cultural context, to locate another agenda for augmented reality in architecture. The idea of cultural augmentation and its articulation at a range of scales, from the tactile to the urban, was generated through the design project. By way of introduction this mode of research is discussed in relation to CAAD research methods. In conclusion, a general model for cultural augmentation with augmented reality as a scalar continuum is presented.
