summary Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a cost-effective, well-known technique widely employed in industrial design. While indoor analysis can be achieved via CFD, Wind Tunnel Testing (WTT) is still the prevailing mode of analysis for outdoor studies. WTT is often only performed a few times during the course of a building design/construction cycle and primarily for verification purposes. This paper presents a cross-disciplinary research initiative aiming to make CFD understandable and accessible to the architecture community. Our particular interest is in the incorporation of CFD into the early stages of architectural design. Many critical decisions, including those pertaining to building performance, are made during these stages, and we believe access to wind/airflow information during these stages will help architects make responsible design decisions. As a first step, we designed a passive cooling canopy for a bus stop based on the equatorial climatic conditions of Singapore where wind/airflow was a driving factor for geometry generation. We discuss our strategies for overcoming the two bottlenecks we identified when utilising CFD for this framework: mesh generation and result comprehension/visualisation.

summary In this paper, the authors consider the problem of architectural spatial performance indicators for assessing computer generated design, where identification and analysis of meaningful and relevant spatial qualities is the target of assessment. The paper presents a parametric spatial analysis schema and spatial database structure for the restricted, but still significant, domain of residential housing. A process for the capture and comparison of different types of architectural spatial data is described where analysis focuses on a series of 2D metric and topological spatial measures. The process is then demonstrated in our discussion of a descriptive scenario.

summary We introduce a formal grammar as a computational approach to the generation of design. While existing shape-grammars transform primitive shapes as lines or rectangles, the presented production system specifically addresses polyhedral objects described by three-dimensional meshes composed of vertices, edges and faces. The parameters of the transformation rules are sensitive to topological and topographical properties of the selected input mesh. We demonstrate that this approach allows the creation of new ornamental structures and can lead to a new language of architectural forms.

summary This paper aims to develop a tool entitled “Visual Architectural Topology (VAT)” for encoding topological information within a case library. VAT can annotate design objects and their topological in-formation within the unstructured information of a design case. By applying an ontology-based topological validation mechanism, VAT aims to establish a visual language for representing the “topological knowledge” of architectural design objects in a case library. The pur-pose of VAT is to extend the knowledge representation ability of a de-sign case library, and to provide a foundation for development of a design-assistance tool performing the conversion and processing among semantic and geometric design information.

title Multi-Objective Heuristic Computation Applied To Architectural And Structural Design: A Review

summary Heuristic computation techniques have been used in a wide range of fields, demonstrating their capacity to solve highly complex optimization problems. This article presents the most common techniques and their extension into the multi-objective optimization field, and emphasizes in the application of them in structural and architectural design by presenting examples within topics like: topological, shape and dimensional optimization of truss structures, roof optimization for sunlight conditions and area minimization, grid structures, façade design, life cycle cost and environmental impact, energy efficiency and construction costs, morphogenetic structural optimization for shell structures, acoustical optimization, evolutionary architectural design, architectural layout design optimization, RC frames optimization, and land use zoning, within others. Finally, the conclusion leads to the recognition of heuristic computation not only as an optimization tool, but also as an important component of a design methodology for creating innovative, creative, efficient, well performing, and aesthetically pleasant architectural/engineering objects.

summary The conception of a Generative Model (GM) is an important step when applying optimization methods in architectural design. The variant spectrum generable with a GM determines if an optimal solution for the different demands placed on a design can be found. Using the example of optimizing façades (more specifically window-layouts), it is shown that GM that exclusively vary either metric or topological properties of the geometry are not sufficient, because they only cover a highly restricted solution-space. To keep the solution space as large as possible, it is argued, that it is necessary to vary both topological and metric properties. The combination of both properties is called topo-metric properties. A GM for the generation of facade variants is presented, that is able to systematically vary these topo-metric properties. The effectiveness of the developed GM compared to conventional GMs is demonstrated using a simple test scenario.

summary This research addresses the design and negotiation of two kinds of assemblies that are similar in topology but fundamentally different in performance. Firstly, Topological Interlocking Assemblies (TA) are made of solid elements. Their overall structural integrity relies on each element being kinematical constraint by its neighbours. Secondly, Bell Kites, similar in topology but fundamentally different in performance these kites are made of clusters of tetrahedrons. While TA are heavy, massive and exposed to gravity Bell Kites are super light and dominantly driven by wind forces. These two instances formulate the opposing ends of a spectrum in which a new system, one that is capable of covering the full range of performance, is developed and re-conceptualized in architectural context. The research seeks design-innovation by scrutinizing systems that are not yet part of the architectural ecosystem. Mapping out their performative characteristics and developing their spatial and programmatic potential through conscious design moves explore the potential for architectural applications. The work presented in this paper is the result of a design research studio of the Architecture and Performative Design Class at the Staedelschule in Frankfurt.

title The Resolution of Architecture in the Digital Age

summary The resolution of architecture is a measure of the spatial density of information inherent in a building. This paper demonstrates how the confluence of advances in computational design and additive manufacturing has recently led to a paradigm shift in potential architectural resolution. Buildings can now be designed and fabricated with elements at the threshold of human perception. This resolution can be used to replicate existing architectural styles ever more efficiently and accurately. Yet as with the introduction of other new technologies, architects must now explore the latent potentials and determine what kind of new architectures become conceivable. Specifically, what architectures can adequately express this enormous resolution and the unlimited geometric complexity within reach? With the project Digital Grotesque, we present the first human-scale, enclosed structure that truly exploits these opportunities. Algorithms are used to articulate and orchestrate the geometry from the macro scale down to 1mm small details. The structure is enriched with local information at a previously unseen resolution. A unique language of form is developed that transcends rationality and celebrates spatial expression: a digital exuberance.

summary Recent developments in theory and technology in performance based design show an interest towards generative systems. In this paper a morphogenetic approach will be introduced that looks at Goethean morphology and leaf venation patterns. To instrumentalize this approach an algorithm will be introduced to generate various leaf venation patterns on complex mesh surfaces. As a case study, the paper tests the applicability of such system as performative algorithms for building envelopes. The role of simulation is to generate self-organizing forms and provide a framework for design development. The overall approach is to consider performance as a direct input to guide the computation of form at an early design stage.

summary The "PURE Tension" Pavilion is a lightweight, rapidly deployable, tensioned membrane structure and portable charging station commissioned by Volvo Car Italia to showcase the new Volvo V60 Hybrid Electric Diesel car. Officially launched in Milan, Italy in October 2013, this experimental structure was developed through a process of rigorous research and development that investigated methods of associative modelling, dynamic mesh relaxation, geometric rationalization, solar incidence analysis, membrane panelling, and material performance. It is an experimental structure that, similar to a concept car, is a working prototype that speculates on the potential future of personal mobility and alternative energy sources for transportation while also exploring digital design methodologies and innovative structural solutions. This paper will illustrate the design, development and fabrication processes involved in realizing this structure.

summary In this work we address the fast and economical realization of complex formwork for concrete with the advantage of robotic fabrication. Under economical realization we mean reduction of production time and material efficiency. The complex form of individual formwork parts can be in our case double curved surface or complex mesh geometry. We propose the fabrication of the formwork by straight or shaped hot wire. We illustrate different approaches to mould production, where the proposed process demonstrates itself effective. In our approach we deal with the special kinds of modularity and specific symmetry of the formwork.

summary In this paper, we look at the surface tessellation problem, in particular, the problem of meshing a surface with the added consideration of incorporating constructible building components. When a surface is tessellated into discrete counterparts, certain conditions usually occur on the surface boundaries that are caused by trimming operations; for example, irregularly shaped panels at the trimmed edges. We present an algorithmic approach to tessellating quad-dominant mesh surfaces to deal with such irregular boundary conditions, and demonstrate its application through surface subdivision examples.

summary We have grown accustomed to performing elaborate queries on textual data, e.g. via online search engines, file system managers and word processors. In the past decade, retrieval methods that also work on non-textual data have become mainstream (e.g. face recognition software). Sadly, these developments have so far not caught on for data mining within geometrical data, e.g. 3D meshes generated in the course of architectural work. Specifically during data exchange, such a search functionality would be handy, as it often happens that geometry is exported but object identity is lost - think, for example, of generative geometry or exported BIM data. In this paper, we present an example of such a search functionality, based on angular search. Our method is inspired by regular expressions, a string matching technique commonly employed for matching substrings.

summary MOLIT authorised Indoor Spatial Information as Basic spa- tial information in 2013. It became a legal evidence for constructing and managing Indoor Spatial Information. Although it has a little ad- vantage to utilise as service level that Indoor Spatial Information by laser scan or measurement, it has a lot of problems such as consuming many resources, requiring additional progresses for inputting Object Information. In conclusion, it is inefficient to utilise for the mainte- nance and domestic AEC/FM field. The purposes of this study is to output Indoor Spatial Information by operating IFC model which based on open BIM and to improve availability of Indoor Spatial In- formation with data visualisation. The open-sources of IFC Exporter, an inner program of Revit, is used to output Indoor Spatial Infor- mation. Directs 3D Library is also operated to visualise Indoor Spatial Information. It is possible to inter-operate between XML format and the objects of Indoor Spatial Information. It can be utilised in various field as well. For example COBie linkage in facility management, construction of geo-database using air-photogrammetry of UA V , the simulation of large-scale military operations and the simulation of large-scale evacuation. The method that is purposed in this study has outstanding advantages such as conformance with national spatial in- formation policy, high level of interoperability as indoor spatial in- formation objects based on IFC, convenience of editing information, light level of data and simplifying progress of producing information.

summary Considering the importance of the use of programming languages for teaching computational design to architects, this paper proposes the translation of computer programs from a pioneer work in this field into a more contemporary programming language. The book The Art of Computer Graphics Programming: A Structured Introduction for Architects and Designers was published in 1987 by William J. Mitchell, Robin Ligget and Thomas Kvan, and remains an important reference for architects. The original Pascal codes in the book were translated into Processing, and made available through an Internet website, along with images and comments, in order to give late Prof. Mitchell’s work the consideration it deserves.

summary Building performance simulation (BPS) is the basis for informed decision-making of Net Zero Energy Buildings (NZEBs) design. This paper aims to investigate the use of building performance simulation tools as a method of informing the design decision of NZEBs. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of a simulation-based decision aid, ZEBO, on informed decision-making using sensitivity analysis. The objective is to assess the effect of ZEBO and other building performance simulation (BPS) tools on three specific outcomes: (i) knowledge and satisfaction when using simulation for NZEB design; (ii) users’ decision-making attitudes and patterns, and (iii) performance robustness based on an energy analysis. The paper utilizes three design case studies comprising a framework to test the use of BPS tools. The paper provides results that shed light on the effectiveness of sensitivity analysis as an approach for informing the design decisions of NZEBs.

summary In this paper, we present preliminary specifications for a computer design tool for the application of mass customization in middle class apartment design in Brazil. Believing that in the digital era, network communication and digital design tools combined may create a design environment that considers consumer needs and preferences, we present a simple drafting of a computer tool that makes use of those concepts. And therefore we believe to contribute for the future construction of a design system that redefines problem scenarios, rather than providing individual solutions, repositioning architects and clients in the design process.

summary This study presents a digital architectural design tool named “Fuzzy Layout Planner” that helps architects create two dimensional sketchy footprints for their design. The purpose of the tool is to extend limits of early design thinking. It uses fuzzy modeling techniques to adapt the ambiguous design phase. There are several commands in this digital tool to generate and modify layouts. Users can create, move, combine sketchy bubbles to form bigger footprints and see them in action dynamically. The tool offers a manual creation process.

summary The Architecture of ScarCity Game is a board game used as a pedagogical tool that challenges architecture students by involving them in a series of experimental design sessions to understand the design process of scarcity and the actual relation between the craft and the digital. This means "pragmatic delivery processes and material constraints, where the exchange between the artisan of handmade, representing local skills and technology of the digitally conceived is explored" (Huang 2013). The game focuses on understanding the different variables of the crafted design process of traditional communities under conditions of scarcity (Michel and Bevan 1992). This requires first analyzing the spatial environmental model of interaction, available human and natural resources, and the dynamic relationship of these variables in a digital era. In the first stage (Pre-Agency), the game set the concept of the craft by limiting students design exploration from a minimum possible perspective developing locally available resources and techniques. The key elements of the design process of traditional knowledge communities have to be identified (Preez 1984). In other words, this stage is driven by limited resources + chance + contingency. In the second stage (Post-Agency) students taking the architects´ role within this communities, have to speculate and explore the interface between the craft (local knowledge and low technological tools), and the digital represented by computation data, new technologies available and construction. This means the introduction of strategy + opportunity + chance as part of the design process. In this sense, the game has a life beyond its mechanics. This other life challenges the participants to exploit the possibilities of breaking the actual boundaries of design. The result is a tool to challenge conventional methods of teaching and leaning controlling a prescribed design process. It confronts the rules that professionals in this field take for granted. The game simulates a 'fake' reality by exploring in different ways with surveyed information. As a result, participants do not have anything 'real' to lose. Instead, they have all the freedom to innovate and be creative.
