title Na rua: leituras e reflexões urbanas a partir do uso de meios digitais [On the street: urban readings and reflections by means of digital media]
source SiGraDi 2014 [Proceedings of the 18th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISBN: 978-9974-99-655-7] Uruguay - Montevideo 12 - 14 November 2014, pp. 536-539
summary The Hybrid Territories project explored the construction of urban hybrid spatialities by means of cultural action using digital media with a two-way perspective: of someone who occupies and experiences these spaces, as well as of someone who is called to understand these spaces, for they should there intervene. A form of collective creation through the use of digital interfaces has thereby been established as an effective action of intervention in an urban space, of which new understandings emerge, and establish reflexive territories that may even reshape the practice of the architect and the urban planner.

doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2019.1.805
source Sousa, JP, Xavier, JP and Castro Henriques, G (eds.), Architecture in the Age of the 4th Industrial Revolution - Proceedings of the 37th eCAADe and 23rd SIGraDi Conference - Volume 1, University of Porto, Porto, Portugal, 11-13 September 2019, pp. 805-816
summary Location-based mobile applications have been a rising theme for academics in the field of urbanism and in urban and transportation, because of the potential of transformation they might bring to the urban landscape (De Souza e Silva, 2013). One of the possibilities we study here is to observe social encounters fostered by commuting rides. In this paper, we try to examine the practice from the broad perspective of estimating the environmental benefits, in a context where digital information technology is wielded to address problems old and new (Townsend, 2014). This paper aims to analyze the potential of transformations that new ICTs bring to urban mobility, using as case study the official ridesharing system of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, the Carona? project. The system was developed focusing on the reduction of the number of motorized trips to the University, as well as the amount of CO2 generated by them. Here we analyze the dynamics of ridesharing, using the system data, and also try to observe the role it may play towards the promotion of integration in the UFRJ community.

title New Approaches to Representation in Conceptual Design
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 12 - no. 4, 359-378
summary Design has been a human activity as long as humans are humans. In the last decades, a lot of academic research has been devoted to understand the theoretical and scientific bases on which this activity rests, and some of these aspects are beginning to be clear, in particular with respect to cognitive processes and representational needs. Therefore, in this article, we will: 1) briefly describe some current approaches to design thinking and in particular describe conceptual design; 2) analyze how current state-of-the-art software is neither designed to give an answer to these processes, nor to support conceptual design; and 3) introduce a new approach in the design of CAD software data models, so that conceptual design is better supported to truly “aid” designers in his praxis.

summary This article discusses the introduction of sensible dimensions of space, through the memory of significant places, and the audiovisual as a tool in architectural education. Departing from the tradition of graphic representation and the development of an architectural program, the article decribes the experiece of a studio focused on the remembrance of domestic places and the development of videos. An expected result, the video showed its potential as articulator of sensible dimensions. However, several student projects evidenced a disconnection between its graphic representation and the video, and therefore exposing the difficulties of the experience’s systematization into a design method.

summary Automation and robotics are increasingly penetrating all types of industries in developed countries including architecture, i.e., products and services related to architectural practice. Therefore, more than ever, architects, designers and artists are interested in developing computational thinking skills to be able to integrate more functionality into their creations and take direct control of their fabrication. But what can a small school of architecture in Latin America do to prevent the deskilling of its graduates and, instead, create new labor opportunities for them abroad. Third-year students integrate physical computing with visual programming in an active learning environment to develop free proposals.

source De Luca, F, Lykouras, I and Wurzer, G (eds.), Proceedings of the 9th eCAADe Regional International Symposium, TalTech, 15 - 16 June 2023, pp. 105–115
summary Increasing use of BIM has represented a continuing shift in traditional assumptions on how we navigate the design process. BIM is affording the student the ability to gain a greater understanding of their design ideas via the exploration of scale, spatial organisation and structure, amongst many other design layers, in increasing levels of detail, at the same point in the design process. Architectural education is at a delayed tipping point where architectural students are increasingly looking towards BIM to streamline their design process drawn by the production of realistic visualisation, but with a lack of knowledge and skill in its application. With a lack of guidance and understanding around the application of BIM, the use of BIM in this manner overlooks the potential of BIM to construct and test virtual simulations of proposed schemes, to support design enquiry. A historical concern for the pedagogy constructed around the students’ design process is the application of methods and techniques that support the progression through the design process, (Ambrose, 2014; dash mei & Safari, 2018). This study examines the design process of architectural students and the interaction between analogue and digital methods used in design. These primary modes of communication, offer the opportunity to query the roles and rules of traditional architectural conventions around ‘problem finding’ and ‘problem solving’, challenging the ‘traditional’ design process examined by pioneers like Bruner (1966) and Schon (1987). These approaches are distilled from the findings of the study and presented as guidance to those teaching in architectural aBIMemia to align pedagogic goals to methods of abstraction in this new era of design education reconsidering digital methods in design.

source SiGraDi 2014 [Proceedings of the 18th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISBN: 978-9974-99-655-7] Uruguay - Montevideo 12 - 14 November 2014, pp. 297-301
summary This study describes a didactic method for the introduction of parametric design in graphic and digital geometry courses in architectural training. It started with the recognition of the concept of parametric design and the investment in the appropriation of Grasshopper associated with Rhinoceros. Paper folding exercises were configured both physically and in the digital space. Through an interactive dynamic between traditional processes, by hand and digital, and parametric design, a learning path was defined in a playful manner which highlights the differences between methods of representation and its implications for the design action starting from a first semester of training.
