summary The paper details computational mapping and modeling techniques from an ongoing design research project titled Irradiated Shade, which endeavors to develop and calibrate a computational toolset to uncover, represent, and design for the unseen dangers of ultraviolet radiation, a growing yet underexplored threat to cities, buildings, and the bodies that inhabit them. While increased shade in public spaces has been advocated as a strategy for “mitigation [of] climate change” (Kapelos and Patterson 2014), it is not a panacea to the threat. Even in apparent shade, the body is still exposed to harmful, ambient, or “scattered” UVB radiation. The study region is a binational metroplex, a territory in which significant atmospheric pollution and the effects of climate change (reduced cloud cover and more “still days” of stagnant air) amplify the “scatter” of ultraviolet wavelengths and UV exposure within shade, which exacerbates urban conditions of shade as an “index of inequality” (Bloch 2019) and threatens public health. Exposure to indirect radiation correlates to the amount of sky visible from the position of an observer (Gies and Mackay 2004). The overall size of a shade structure, as well as the design of openings along its sides, can greatly impact the UV protection factor (UPF) (Turnbull and Parisi 2005). Shade, therefore, is more complex than ubiquitous urban and architectural “sun” and “shadow studies” are capable of representing, as such analyses flatten the three-dimensional nature of radiation exposure and are “blind” to the ultraviolet spectrum. “Safe shade” is contingent on the nuances of the surrounding built environment, and designers must be empowered to observe and respond to a wider context than current representational tools allow.

summary The growth of urban areas and the increase of urban migrations caused an incorporation of industrialized areas in the development of cities. The difficulties related to city planning in these areas could be coped with more satisfactorily through the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Context ontologies plus reasoning rules to reuse old industrial buildings. The 'Context' entities and rules are studied using a Context Knowledge Model formalized with Protégé OWL(Ontology Web Language). The study was carried out on industrial buildings situated in southern Lazio - Italy - in particular a paper mill network. Applying GIS instruments to the study of these areas is not enough as designers can only obtain information, but not knowledge, which depends on the urban, historical, cultural, economic, environmental and juridical ‘context’. The goal of this research is to create a combination of these technologies to manage knowledge for a more aware design to regenerate old industrial areas with new uses.

But what can a small school of architecture in Latin America do to prevent the deskilling of its graduates and, instead, create new labor opportunities for them abroad. summary Cultural landscapes, although complex realities, give shape and meaning to the tangible and intangible components which form the foundations of human cultural background. The architecture of the city of Colonia del Sacramento fits within this context, and builds up a unique cultural landscape inserted in the logic of the historical heritage protection system. This concept, which implies wealth but also conflicts, demands a multidisciplinary approach grounded on a wide vision of this issue. Likewise, this comprehensive approach contributes to reverse and correct the lack of capacity and/or interest to save these examples of man-made landscape (prefabrication, mega-projects of the beginnings of the 20th Century, etc.), which are essential pieces of heritage conservation. Since 1943 the bullring is owned by the Municipality of Colonia. In the last decade the building was fenced to prevent breakdown risk. Still, illegal access occurs quite easily, increasing the risk and potential damage, in addition to the spoilage caused by more than one hundred years of inactivity and lack of maintenance. This paper proposes a method to survey and record the current status of the building, from photos taken by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV, drones), allowing the registry without the need of direct access to the site. The survey will enable three types of results: series of mapped photographs, 3D models and an interactive platform for aerial view. The aim is to provide valuable and essential documentation for next stages of consolidation works, competitions and eventualy, new uses of the heritage building.

summary This article synthesizes the result of a systematization and analysis of videomapping carried out in “Laboratorio de Visualización Digital Avanzada” in the period 2014-2022, taking as a source the information collected in the investigation "(Lafluf, 2020), it is updated by integrating new experiences and new interpretations. Likewise, the article aims to provide a structured way to describe and analyze videomapping projects, keeping in mind three axes: context project, mapping project, and mapping event. These categories refer to a strategy developed within the methodological framework of the master's thesis "Videomapping en los proyectos del Laboratorio de Visualización Digital Avanzada de la Facultad de Arquitectura Diseno y Urbanismo (Udelar). Caso de estudio: Videomapping Patrimonio Anglo" (Lafluf, 2020) as well as in other investigations to describe the videomapping. Once this set of videomapping projects has been presented, general considerations are made to analyze the surveyed cases.

summary The research analyzes the impact of artificial beach nourishment in Joao Pessoa - PB, considering the increase in buildings and its environmental and social consequences. Urban beaches are particularly vulnerable to the growing effects of climate change. Artificial beach nourishment is proposed as a response to coastal erosion, but experts raise concerns about its high cost, ecosystem imbalance, destruction of fragile biomes, and impact on local communities. The research employs digital simulation (Scheer, 2014) through generative visual models as resources to analyze the beach nourishment project in Cabo Branco and Tambaú. Various visualization techniques and means are overlapped to simulate images linked to the real impacts of the proposed interventions. The study also explores the relationships between gray, green, and blue infrastructures and the effects on shading and ventilation caused by the buildings. The purpose is to understand the social, environmental, and urban dynamics' impacts on the city.

summary Children are entitled to equal access to education; this applies to the classroom setting. The classroom size, shape and layout are commonly taken for granted and little consideration is taken to how this affects the learning experience. This paper argues that the traditional classroom environment does not allow for equal interaction between teachers and pupils. Preliminary findings of a case study in 4 classrooms in Uruguay are presented. The conclusions suggest that not all pupils in the classroom receive quality interaction with the teacher. A more comprehensive approach to designing spaces that are conducive to learning will benefit this interaction.

summary The following project was created as part of an art residency with the Wellcome Centre for Mitochondrial Research (WCMR) at Newcastle University. The WCMR specializes in leading-edge research into mitochondrial disease, investigating causes, treatments, and ways of avoiding hereditary transmission. Mitochondria is believed to have started off as a separate species that through symbiosis came to be the powerhouse of each cell in our bodies (Hird 2009). Mitochondrial disease is a genetic disorder that is caused by genetic mutations of the DNA of the mitochondria or the cell that in turn affects the mitochondria (Bolano 2018). Mitochondria is a hereditary condition and can affect people at different stages in their lives. It can affect various organs and has a link to various types of conditions. Therefore, the patient experience is unique to each individual and the elusive nature of the condition can make it particularly challenging due to the complexity of the disorder as well as the inaccessible scale on which these variations occur (Chinnery 2014)

summary Reverse engineering is been applied in industry for many years, particularly in the context of the software industry, with the subsequent theoretical development, especially from the 1990s. In this paper we propose to realize their potential application to the field of design, and then characterize the concept of Reverse Design, associated with the idea of projectual deconstruction, concept that has great potential, from didactics to the optimization of materials and energy. Based on a literature review of the state, we will use the basic texts of reverse engineering to establish parallels, differences and contributions to the discipline.

summary In design courses in Argentina, “enchinchada” (“thumbtacking”) is the name given to the educational tool used for assessment of students’ work. Every student’s assignment is pinned around the classroom for students to enable, students and teachers to join into a formative dialogue thought observation and reflexion. This work presents the potential of IT in relation to the “enchinchada”. It outlines a new use of a digital wall, and recovers and enriches this practice using a free cloud app, Popplet. The experience was carried out at the Universidad de Buenos Aires in 2013 with students of fashion design and textile design.

The subject of creativity is understood as a challenge of teaching; where process and creative thinking are linked with ICT and have an important role in the project development. ICT introduce different factors as, networks, information and scientific advances, improving the level of thinking in design. Teachers should encourage students to put into action their inventiveness and collaboration to increase their creativity level.
