title Universal Dovetail Joint
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2014.409
source Rethinking Comprehensive Design: Speculative Counterculture, Proceedings of the 19th International Conference on Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA 2014) / Kyoto 14-16 May 2014, pp. 409–418
summary The paper presents the geometrical investigation of a three-dimensional dovetail joint that can lead (timber) frame construction to more than two-dimensional frames; the creation of timber construction with timber members meeting at irregular angles can be shown to be feasible, simplifying overall construction. Traditional joints in timber construction usually work only in two dimensions, in other words in planar surfaces, resulting thus in complicated assemblies in three-dimensions. Stemming from traditional timber dovetail joints, the universal joint under investigation is produced under revolution of the geometry of a dovetail fastener through its middle axis. The resulting concave disk can connect timber elements under irregular angles, without the need for the structural members to lie in the same plane. The joint works due to friction between members rather than using any other element of bonding, allowing for the assembly of joints and structural members with no specialized tools. The paper explores the geometric constraints and degrees of freedom that such a disk creates in timber construction, and consequently in similar linear construction systems.

title Os desenhos de Villard de Honnecourt e o processo projetivo na Idade Média [The drawings of Villard de Honnecourt and the projective process in the Middle Ages]
source SiGraDi 2014 [Proceedings of the 18th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISBN: 978-9974-99-655-7] Uruguay - Montevideo 12 - 14 November 2014, pp. 479-482
summary This paper began by architectural drawings’ study in the Middle Ages, among them, the drawings of the Villard de Honnecourt’s sketchbook, foreman of the thirteenth century. Through these drawings we could analyzed how the construction and design process of Gothic cathedrals was developed in the construction site. This study aimed to analyze the difficulties in the construction process by reading the drawings, as well as its own richness graphic. The project presents the redesign and the analysis of the Honnecourt and Gothic cathedrals as well as the execution of reduced physical models.

title Space Perception in Virtual Environments - On how biometric sensing in virtual environments may give architects users's feedback
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2014.2.271
source Thompson, Emine Mine (ed.), Fusion - Proceedings of the 32nd eCAADe Conference - Volume 2, Department of Architecture and Built Environment, Faculty of Engineering and Environment, Newcastle upon Tyne, England, UK, 10-12 September 2014, pp. 271-280
summary This paper focuses on the objective study of emotions, namely, fear induced by architectural spaces, by sensing and statistically analysing some physiological signals of users experiencing Virtual Environments (VE). For this, a virtual building was designed considering the presence of stairs and ramps as architectural elements that could affect users´ physiological states and perception of fear of falling. Thirty-one older persons participated in this study and were assigned to two experimental conditions (i.e., safe and unsafe conditions). Five main locations (beginning of the stairs; neutral room; first descending ramp; ascending ramp; and the middle of ascending ramp) were considered along the participants' path, and heart rate (HR) was collected in the vicinity of those locations. Results shown significant differences in HR activation among neutral, beginning of stairs and middle of ascending ramp. Despite the fact that the effect of condition was not fully verified for HR, participants reported more fear while interacting with the unsafe condition, with significant differences between conditions.

title Searching for Computational Regionalism
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2014.003
source Rethinking Comprehensive Design: Speculative Counterculture, Proceedings of the 19th International Conference on Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA 2014) / Kyoto 14-16 May 2014, pp. 3–12
summary This paper outlines a developing teaching and research pedagogy being developed at an educational institution in the United Arab Emirates that resists contemporary models of Computational Orientalism. The paper describes that exploring the space between Middle-Eastern material culture and contemporary computational design methodologies as generative, systemic, and adaptive conditions allows for the development of a material culture that is both local and driven by the computational zeitgeist. More specifically, the paper outlines the historical relevance of the computational spline and how it is being explored to develop a novel material culture through parametric models and physics-based systems.
