summary This paper presents the development of a telepresence interface intended to investigate the possibility of a “place” for remote meeting. The main goal is to create a shared realm making users act remotely to expand their senses of presence and belonging. By using spatialized sensors and actuators it is possible to transform a room in a telecommunication device. The interface does not seek to replace other telecommunication technologies but to create a new way for autonomous communication which might also complement the existent ones.

title Bio-Mineralisation And In-Situ Fabrication Of In-Dune Spaces: Case Study Of Thar Desert
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2021.1.493
source A. Globa, J. van Ameijde, A. Fingrut, N. Kim, T.T.S. Lo (eds.), PROJECTIONS - Proceedings of the 26th CAADRIA Conference - Volume 1, The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Online, Hong Kong, 29 March - 1 April 2021, pp. 493-502
summary Desertification has made large productive landscapes in the South-west Thar desert redundant, subjected people to migration and induced a constant influx of sand into the region (Singhvi and Amal, 2014). The abundance of sand creates an opportunity to adopt an existing technique, Bio-mineralisation, to develop a sand based composite material which, when treated with a construction binder like sodium alginate, can be used for engineering purposes. The paper sets a theoretical framework to develop a fabrication mechanism with microbial-grout injections and propose the development of in-dune/underground assembly of habitable spaces. Each of the sub-components of material system, fabrication mechanism and In-dune structures are detailed, and evaluated to devise a hierarchy between them. Their interdependencies together inform design strategies, a phasing plan and global time scale for overall terrain transformation.

summary Design Thinking recognizes processes linked to empathy, creation, prototyping and storytelling, that condition design methodologies to solve complex problems with user participation. From this perspective, next to disruptive practices, we present learning experiences focus in management, design and production of graphic databases in Web 2.0 and 3.0 contexts. They are linked to photomontages and graphic communication pieces of urban-architectural works and narratives that give meaning and entity to those interventions. We recorded results that value spatial thinking with images. Also the presence of traditional skills with hybrid skills in students, that encourage fluency, creativity and innovation, self-learning, experimentation, teamwork and network integration.

title Desarrollo de competencias avanzadas en computación en la formación de los arquitectos latinoamericanos del siglo XXI [Advanced Computing Competence Development in 21st-century Latin American Architects’ Education]
source SIGraDi 2014 [Proceedings of the 18th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISBN: 978-9974-99-655-7] Uruguay - Montevideo 12 - 14 November 2014, pp. 217-221
summary Automation and robotics are increasingly penetrating all types of industries in developed countries including architecture, i.e., products and services related to architectural practice. Therefore, more than ever, architects, designers and artists are interested in developing computational thinking skills to be able to integrate more functionality into their creations and take direct control of their fabrication. But what can a small school of architecture in Latin America do to prevent the deskilling of its graduates and, instead, create new labor opportunities for them abroad. Third-year students integrate physical computing with visual programming in an active learning environment to develop free proposals.

title Lattice Shell Methodologies
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2014.191
source Rethinking Comprehensive Design: Speculative Counterculture, Proceedings of the 19th International Conference on Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA 2014) / Kyoto 14-16 May 2014, pp. 191–200
summary This paper outlines a working methodology for the parametric development of lattice shell structures combining surface topology and form-finding with the material constraints of straight lath members woven into a geodesic network. By employing non-uniform grid spacing, a wider typology of spatial types can be employed than can be achieved with traditional flat-matt lattice shell construction. As a parametric design tool and working methodology, some of the heavy lifting in form-finding and geodesic analysis can be off-loaded to the tool, such that a more comprehensive attention can be placed on other design criteria such as spatial development and environmental response while maintaining the elegance and economy of lattice shells.

title Capturing and Evaluating Parametric Design Exploration in a Collaborative Environment - A study case of versioning for parametric design
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2021.2.131
source A. Globa, J. van Ameijde, A. Fingrut, N. Kim, T.T.S. Lo (eds.), PROJECTIONS - Proceedings of the 26th CAADRIA Conference - Volume 2, The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Online, Hong Kong, 29 March - 1 April 2021, pp. 131-140
summary Although parametric modelling and digital design tools have become ubiquitous in digital design, there is a limited understanding of how designers apply them in their design processes (Yu et al., 2014). This paper looks at the use of GHShot versioning tool developed by the authors (Cristie & Joyce, 2018; 2019) used to capture and track changes and progression of parametric models to understand early-stage design exploration and collaboration empirically. We introduce both development history graph-based metrics (macro-process) and parametric model and geometry change metric (micro-process) as frameworks to explore and understand the captured progression data. These metrics, applied to data collected from three cohorts of classroom collaborative design exercises, exhibited students' distinct modification patterns such as major and complex creation processes or minor parameter explorations. Finally, with the metrics' applicability as an objective language to describe the (collaborative) design process, we recommend using versioning for more data-driven insight into parametric design exploration processes.

summary Following is a low cost methodology that allows the geometric return of the altarpieces, which contribute to the reconstruction of religious architectural space craft disappeared from Venezuelan colonial churches is presented. This methodology consists of four stages: first with a photogrammetric survey, followed by a study of basic digital photography software and through a study based on the perspective. Then the knowledge through the published references and finally the virtual modeling. With them the space-altarpiece leads us to define both spaces as altarpieces relationship is confirmed.

summary The digitization of culture imposes new logic to the design disciplines in professional and academic areas. New roles, competencies and requirements emerge in front of an architecture that today is essentially material and also informational. The overabundance of information confuses and forced to develop strategies and skills that go beyond the traditional system of reading and observation to achieve its analysis and understanding. In this sense, the work investigates and cartography variables of information visualization related to semantic attributes, aimed to recognize their potential for instrumental experimentation in design processes within learning environments.

summary As the term suggests, a pseudoperspective involves performing a false perspective, and is the result of combining two different projective systems: Diedric Orthogonal System with the Central perspective System. Despite its heterodox character, this nifty graphic resource is used since the invention of perspective. With the digital graphics development of pseudo-perspectives currently allows new expressive possibilities. In this paper an academic exercise conducted with students from a curriculum during the first year of a career in architecture is presented. summary This paper reports on progress related to the “Urban Instant” project (fondecyt 11110450) developed by the author as a tool for a systematic immersive/phenomenological assessment of the patterns of behavior of our visual field (photographically abstracted) regarding information in the shape of people during our navigations along the streets of any given city. Instead of simultaneous photographic journeys undertaken by a single person along the streets, in this occasion the applied method consisted of one simultaneous record made by more than a hundred voluntaries. This, we believe, might be the first urban instant ever to have been taken with this methodology. The case study remains the city of Concepcion, Chile.
