summary Education and Research in Computer Aided Architectural Design in Europe faces many urgent tasks. Among the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC)international scientific societies, only few researches systematically investigate on how to integrate the design solutions with Health and Safety (HS) planning measures, enhancing a collaborative “fusion” of all involved actors in Design and Construction decision making. Process automation cannot be enhanced until design/management tools, such as Building Information Models, can rely only on entities formalised "per se" geometrical items fulfilled by isolated-object specific information. To face complex problems, BIM models should be able to implement and manipulate multiple sets of entities, qualified by clearly established relationships, belonging to organically structured and oriented (sub-) systems. This paper reports on an early stage research project, focused on the identification of operative rules for Health and Safety design. Implementation on the unique case study of Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana functional refurbishment faces two main objectives: one, more pragmatic, is concerned with boostingworkers education about non-standard operative tasks, by means of accurate ad-hoc construction narrative visualisation; another one, more challenging and theoretically complex, consists in modelling "judgment-based" rules, aimed at supporting automated reasoning in Safety Design.

summary project 3xLP, the winning submission to the TEX-FAB SKIN competition, is a continuation of design research on the structural properties of textured stainless steel sheeting, which typically is used for skinning and other non-structural purposes. The team conducted performative analyses of the material, and verified the results through full-scale prototyping. Structural studies relied on scale shifts that began with molecular composition and culminated with large-sale geometric systems. The work provides evidence of the adaptability, rigidity, and high performance of thin-gauge, textured metals; it establishes the groundwork for new structurally-based design possibilities using sheet steel.

summary The following group installation was part of a seminar on biomimetics at the University of Arizona, USA. The design began with research into various natural systems, namely cell growth and morphogenesis and digital tools. In nature cells contain preprogrammed responses based on intrinsic properties which allow for differentiation and adaptation to external forces. This logic of cell morphology was developed into the installation design. Form specificity and topological variation was developed through the manipulation of a material system, bending and loading identical components to adapt to external forces, such as the sun, while simultaneously navigating the site, providing structure and ultimately architectural space.

summary The increasing complexity in architectural design brought a parallel evolution of tools for shape generation and management. Digital tools which better fulfil this need are the generative design software. The aim of this work is finding and testing real life uses of generative design software beyond academic edges. The specific target is transform a complex surface into a similar surface mostly made of flat panels. As a testing ground it has been chosen the support in construction of complex shapes made with ordinary and well known tools. The combination of software used is Rhinoceros, with its plugin Grasshopper, and a couple of opensource add-on, Lunchbox and Paneling tool. The cases are listed from the simplest to the most complex, and the first four are solved with the automated procedure, the fifth, manually. Based on the cases studied it is possible to confirm that the method is applicable to the majority of the complex surfaces.

summary The concept of “families” lies in the core of internal data structure in Building Information Modeling (BIM). The elements of this modeling platform are all associated with each other as parts of the “families”, independent of their geometrical structure, materiality, parametric dependencies or their physical connection to other elements. Through the associations introduced among the parameters of the ‘families’ members, this study aims at establishing a methodology for a multi-objective evaluation of the environmental performance of the building as an organism. The methodology is founded on a system of different values and weights attributed to the parameters of the families members which are adjusted and fine-tuned through a series of iterations, thus affecting the overall building performance towards an optimum goal. The performance evaluation method used in the “families” methodology is not limited to the individual assessment of the environmental performance objectives or to an integrated multi-objective weighting mechanism; as an overall evaluation platform it checks and balances the individual characteristics of the system not as static conclusive results but as dynamic criteria intended to guide the overall design and building process. The importance of this paper lies in the construction of a concrete methodological set of tools for the assessment of the environmental performance of the building. It will lead the way in independent research in the field of architectural design and the development of ecological thinking and building in China.

summary This paper shows the results of a workshop on parametric urban design. A pattern based parametric urban design platform provides a common platform for urban design and analysis by linking GIS with a parametric CAD environment. Urban plans are developed by combining design patterns taken from a large set of parametric urban design patterns acknowledged as a generic urban design language. Urban plan instances are obtained through a specific composition of patterns and a specific assignment of parameters to the patterns. The models provide simultaneous analysis by confronting formal solutions with density indicators that are automatically provided by a set of density calculation patterns.

summary This paper investigates the potential and implications of using naturally occurring material phenomena as a connecting mechanism for solid timber components. Proposed and discussed are connections based on anisotropic shrinkage and geometrical variability of trees. Using the notion of material agency in design, following the bio-cybernetic and biomimetic frameworks, solutions are devised to reduce energy usage, environmental pollution and utilise low-processed material. Finally, consequences of the fusion of the natural (analogue) and the digital realms are discussed, with an example of a workflow integrating inherent material traits with digital manufacture.

summary Skin is the primary shield between our body and its surroundings. It protects the body from the harmful environmental effects like dehydration and radiation from intense sunlight. Likewise, the outer layer, or skin of a building has the same function of protecting its inhabitants against the external elements. This research is a part of a larger investigation into geometrical patterning and layering of facades as an effective intervention between the outdoor space and the indoor environment to regulate the conditions for occupant thermal comfort. This paper reports on exploration of an approach for measurement, evaluation and feedback in the design workflow through a mixed digital -physical simulation platform (MDPS) based on the objectives of the larger study. For this purpose, it introduces a new way of analyzing thermal performance of double skin facades by using temperature sensors, Arduino, post visualization with MATLAB and digital energy simulation. The main aspects of this proposed workflow is the design of a thermal performance feedback loop as an integral part of the process of geometrical patterning design for façade.

summary This paper presents a project-based research study called Ro-puzzle-a robotic architectural "puzzle," using robotic solutions to illustrate the possibility of an animated/dynamic architectural composition and configurations in the physical world. Through studying super-comportment (Wiscombe, 2014) in both dynamic and static scenarios, this research proposes a new reading to the traditional robotic task of "pick-and-place", through an intuitive motion design process using a custom-made bridge software, Oriole. By revisiting the notion of robotics in the field of design/architecture, Ro-Puzzle investigates the design possibilities of robotics, not merely as fabrication tools, but possibly as physical extensions of the design software into the physical world of architecture, and as a way to expand the digital design imaginations/possibilities beyond the digital screens. In this manuscript and initially tested at the desktop scale, Ro-Puzzle research investigation demonstrated the possibilities of robots as architectural "components" within the architecture/building. This research shows that through the development of custom software/hardware platforms, it is possible to domesticize robotic technology as an active agent in the design process through physical simulation.

summary This paper presents a proposal for a cellular brise-soleil system appropriate for tropical humid climates. The system controls thermal gains whilst allowing for specific lighting requirements, permitting, in many cases, interior thermal and light comfort conditions without the use of thermal machines or artificial lighting. The development of the system involved a definition of variable design parameters and areas of performance evaluation and optimization, plus construction detailing development represented by a first project to be completed in 2014. Even if the geometrical definitions, optimization processes and production machinery are relatively simple and not particularly new to anyone in the field, it is claimed that the use of such already widely available technologies at this basic level, when solving relevant problems, has still to be used in generalised ways by common designers, and with the example shown, this paper wishes to promote such prospect.

summary This work explores the possible use of the shape grammar formalism in generating small/medium sized dwellings or shelters as a possible and effective solution for shelter shortages that usually follows in the wake of a natural disaster. The shelters are generated using a set of pre-fabricated elements that add up to form a coherent and functional dwelling. The grammar exemplified here, being a shape grammar, deals specially with generating the underlying functional diagram and the floor plan of one possible solution based on a set of typologies design a priori.

summary BIM Content Libraries are performing as online sources for building product models. In order to effectively use the product models, it is important to organize them systematically within these databases. But currently there is no standard or guideline for this purpose. Products in these libraries are being categorized based on different criteria such as the object classes in the target platform, by referring to multiple classification systems or based on customized categories. This paper studies some of the BIM Content Libraries and investigates the structure that each library is using for product categorization. It indicates the need for a generic framework for the purpose of product categorization in BIM Content Libraries.

summary Bricks have been used in the construction industry as a building medium for millennia. Distinct patterns of bricks depict the unique aesthetic intentions found in Roman, Gothic and Islamic architecture. In contemporary practice, the use of digital tools in design has enabled methodologies for creating new forms in architecture. CAD and BIM systems provide new opportunities for designers to create parametric objects for building form generation. In masonry design, there exists an inherent contradiction between traditional patterns in brick design, which are formal and prescribed, and the potential for new patterns generated using design scripting. In addition, current tools do not provide interactive techniques for the design of brickwork patterns that can manage constant changes parametrically, to inform and influence design process, by providing design feedback on the constructive and structural aspects of the proposed brick pattern and geometry. This research looks into the parametric techniques that can be applied to create different kinds of patterns on brick walls. It discusses a methodology for an interactive brickwork design within generative techniques. By integrating data between two computational platforms – the first based on image analysis and the second on parametric modeling, we demonstrate a methodology and application that can generate interactive arbitrary patterns and map it to the brick wall in real-time.

summary In continuation to the Deceptive Landscape Installation research project (Agkathidis, Kocatürk 2014), this paper investigates the implementation of generative design techniques in undergraduate architectural design education. After reviewing the main definitions of generative design synoptically, we have assessed the application of a modified generative method on a final year, undergraduate design studio, in order to evaluate its potential and its suitability within the framework of a research led design studio, leading to an RIBA accredited Part I degree. Our research findings based on analysis of the design outputs, student performance, external examiners reports as well as student course evaluation surveys indicate a positive outcome on the studio's design approach, as well as its suitability for an undergraduate design studio. They initiate a flourishing debate about accomplishments and failures of a design methodology, which still remains alien to many undergraduate curricula.

summary Innovative design approaches are needed for mass housing implementations. Especially increasing interaction between user and designer is major important in the design decisions of these buildings. For this, it is seriously necessary to benefit from technological advances in computational designs, because digital tools like shape grammar, cellular automata, genetic algorithm, l-systems and agent-based models in this field provide not only to save time and to manage the relationships but also to generate many different alternatives. Accordingly, a digital support tool for designers has been developed by using cellular automata approach and scripts of 3Ds Max software. It produces samples of housing design plans which is generated by cellular automata approach according to the data of users' preferences. In this paper the interface and contributions of the developed model are introduced and discussed.

summary Historic buildings are fruitful sources of architectural concepts which can be used to generate new designs characterized by authenticity and originality. Design computing methods have used varied techniques of knowledge representation in deriving new designs from architectural precedents such as: case-based design and genetic algorithms. This research has adopted genetic algorithms, a simulation of biological evolution to generate new plans from old ones belonging to the Islamic historical schools. The implemented method represents architectural knowledge in a simple schema (chromosome) and allows it to be modified easily using crossover operation to generate new plans with high fitness value. The research considered the fitness function as a measure of differences among the design characteristics of the sample of the Islamic schools. The results show the effectiveness of genetic algorithms in both analyzing past precedents and synthesizing their characteristics to produce new designs.

summary This study sought to characterise students’ design activity while designing with Computer Aided Design (CAAD) professional programs and its impact on the students’ design process. The design protocol participants were final year students (architectural design and architectural technology), who have spent at least four years in a school of architecture and were confident CAAD users. The analysis represents four CAAD-based protocols of final year students at a school of architecture. The analysed protocols varied in more than one aspect. This variation includes: (1) programs, (2) the mode of using programs whether single or multiple, (3) protocol segments (total number, duration and frequencies), and (4) design categories and total time spent in designing. In light of the study results, the participants demonstrated that, for the same design problem, restraining the conceptual design medium would not necessarily bind them to a certain design strategy. However, there are some disciplinary differences between AD and AT final year students, on how CAAD is used during to solve conceptual design.

summary Governments in Australia are faced with policy implementation that mandates higher energy efficient housing (Foran, Lenzen & Dey 2005). To this effect, the National Construction Code (NCC) 2013 stipulates the minimum energy performance for residential buildings as 114MJ/m2 per annum or 6 stars on an energy rating scale. Compliance with this minimum is mandatory but there are several methods through which residential buildings can be rated to comply with the deemed to satisfy provisions outlined in the NCC. FirstRate5 is by far the most commonly used simulation software used in Victoria, Australia. Meanwhile, Building Information Modelling (BIM), using software such as ArchiCAD has gained a foothold in the industry. The energy simulation software within ArchiCAD, EcoDesigner, enables the reporting on the energy performance based on BIM elements that contain thermal information. This research is founded on a comparative study between FirstRate5 and EcoDesigner. Three building types were analysed and compared. The comparison finds significant differences between simulations, being, measured areas, thermal loads and potentially serious shortcomings within FirstRate5, that are discussed along with the future potential of a fully BIM-integrated model for energy rating certification in Victoria.

summary Surrogate models (SM) present an opportunity for rapid assessment of a building's performance, surpassing the pace of simulation-based methods. Setting up a simulation for a single concept involves defining numerous parameters, disrupting the architect's creative flow due to extended simulation run times. Therefore, this research explores integrating building energy analysis with advanced machine learning techniques to predict heating and cooling loads (KWh/m2) for single and multi-zones in buildings. To generate the dataset, the study adopts a parametric generative workflow, building upon Chou and Bui's (2014) methodology. This dataset encompasses multiple building forms, each with unique topological connections and attributes, ensuring a thorough analysis across varied building scenarios. These scenarios undergo thermal simulation to generate data for machine learning analysis. The study primarily utilizes Random Forest (RF) as a new technique to estimate the heating and cooling loads in buildings, a critical factor in building energy efficiency. Following that, A random search approach is utilized to optimize the hyperparameters, enhancing the robustness and accuracy of the machine learning models employed later in the research. The RF algorithms demonstrate high performance in predicting heating and cooling loads (KWh/m2), contributing to enhanced building energy efficiency. The study underscores the potential of machine learning in optimizing building designs for energy efficiency.
