title Material Swarm Articulations - New View Reciprocal Frame Canopy
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2014.1.463
source Thompson, Emine Mine (ed.), Fusion - Proceedings of the 32nd eCAADe Conference - Volume 1, Department of Architecture and Built Environment, Faculty of Engineering and Environment, Newcastle upon Tyne, England, UK, 10-12 September 2014, pp. 463-473
summary Material Swarm Articulations, is an experiment in developing a multi-objective optimization system that incorporates bottom up approaches for informing architectural design. The paper presents an initial built project that demonstrates the combination of a structural form finding method, with an agent based design system through the digital fabrication processes. The objective of this research is to develop a workflow combined with material and construction constraints that has the potential to increase performance objectives while enabling geometric complexity and design driven articulation of a traditional tectonic system. The emphasis of the research at this stage is to take advantage of material properties and assembly methods applied to a digital design and simulation workflow that enables emergent patterns to influence the performance of the space. The paper illustrates the research through a prototype of a self standing canopy structure in 1:1 scale. It presents results of the form finding, generative patterning, digital fabrication affordances and sets and agenda for next steps in the use of multi-agent systems for design purposes.

title Performance Based Exploration Of Generative Design Solutions Using Formex Algebra
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 12 - no. 3, 321-338
summary This paper illustrates the use of a computational form-finding method called ParaGen which aids the designer in the exploration of arrays of good solutions. Although the method is guided by a multi-objective optimization program, the goal is to promote the exploration of the solution space based on designer selected combinations of performance objectives. The digital form generation of the bridges is carried out using Formian, a program which uses Formex algebra to describe a wide array of geometric configurations. This form generation is linked to structural simulation and design software (STAAD. Pro) to determine performance values. Finally, ParaGen is used to build a database of all solutions and guide the exploration based on performance values. Using this database, both visual and numeric characteristics are explored.

summary Multi-objective evolutionary algorithms have been successfully applied within various design domains in order to explore the trade-offs between conflicting design criteria. This research investigates how evolutionary algorithms can be used to develop urban configurations for walkable new towns, focusing in particular on the trade-off between travelling time using public transport and accessibility to open space. A population of optimised urban configurations was evolved and analysed, resulting in the identification of three differing typologies for walkable new towns.

title The BIM based Responsive Environmental Performance Design Methodology

summary The concept of “families” lies in the core of internal data structure in Building Information Modeling (BIM). The elements of this modeling platform are all associated with each other as parts of the “families”, independent of their geometrical structure, materiality, parametric dependencies or their physical connection to other elements. Through the associations introduced among the parameters of the ‘families’ members, this study aims at establishing a methodology for a multi-objective evaluation of the environmental performance of the building as an organism. The methodology is founded on a system of different values and weights attributed to the parameters of the families members which are adjusted and fine-tuned through a series of iterations, thus affecting the overall building performance towards an optimum goal. The performance evaluation method used in the “families” methodology is not limited to the individual assessment of the environmental performance objectives or to an integrated multi-objective weighting mechanism; as an overall evaluation platform it checks and balances the individual characteristics of the system not as static conclusive results but as dynamic criteria intended to guide the overall design and building process. The importance of this paper lies in the construction of a concrete methodological set of tools for the assessment of the environmental performance of the building. It will lead the way in independent research in the field of architectural design and the development of ecological thinking and building in China.

source Thompson, Emine Mine (ed.), Fusion - Proceedings of the 32nd eCAADe Conference - Volume 2, Department of Architecture and Built Environment, Faculty of Engineering and Environment, Newcastle upon Tyne, England, UK, 10-12 September 2014, pp. 455-464
summary Building energy performance assessments are complex multi-criteria problems. Appropriate tools that can help designers explore design alternatives and assess the energy performance for choosing the most appropriate alternative are in high demand. In this paper, we present a newly developed integrated parametric Building Information Modeling (BIM)-based system to interact with cloud-based whole building energy performance simulation and daylighting tools to optimize building energy performance using a Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) algorithm. This system enables designers to explore design alternatives using a visual programming interface, while assessing the energy performance of the design models to search for the most appropriate design. A case study of minimizing the energy use while maximizing the appropriate daylighting level of a residential building is provided to showcase the utility of the system and its workflow.

title Efficiency in Architectural Geometry Informed by Materials
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2014.1.547
source Thompson, Emine Mine (ed.), Fusion - Proceedings of the 32nd eCAADe Conference - Volume 1, Department of Architecture and Built Environment, Faculty of Engineering and Environment, Newcastle upon Tyne, England, UK, 10-12 September 2014, pp. 547-554
summary Although some studies investigate physics-based dynamic systems to generate structurally efficient forms by incorporating geometry with performance requirements, there is a gap in the field questioning on how to link structurally efficient architectural geometry with mechanical properties of materials. The aim of this paper is to question the possibility of generating an information loop in which Young's Modulus, stiffness of the material may both inform the form-finding process and the structural performance simulation. The proposed method offers steps including form-finding, series of analyses applied for architectural geometry and structural performance, as well as optimization. Based on the simulation results, efficiency values are calculated driven by the use of different materials. The significance of incorporating material properties in the early design stage is underlined, by comparing differences, whether the stiffness of material informs the form-finding process or not.

summary This paper presents research into a technique using context-aware agent based branching L-systems to design explore an urban development scheme in an area of peripheral Mexico City. The design research demonstrates a viable approach to engaging design with specific agent driven objectives that negotiate across highly differentiated fields of data sets. These data sets are the driving force behind this technique, to generate highly differentiated infrastructure and urban networks that are simulated to be autonomous and emergent. The described system consists of simulated robotic autonomous agents that sample and negotiate across data from the site, and react to differences in order to deploy an irrigation network for a polluted and highly saline former lake-bed east of Mexico City.

title A Model for Sustainable Site Layout Design with Pareto Genetic Algorithm: SSPM
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2014.1.227
source Thompson, Emine Mine (ed.), Fusion - Proceedings of the 32nd eCAADe Conference - Volume 1, Department of Architecture and Built Environment, Faculty of Engineering and Environment, Newcastle upon Tyne, England, UK, 10-12 September 2014, pp. 227-238
summary In architectural design, computer aided design tools have an important impact on design process, but still early design stage and sustainable design are problematic issues. During sustainable architectural design process, the designer needs to comply with some regulations, which requires calculations and comparisons. Green building certification systems are developed to assist designers during this complicated process, but for an efficient sustainable design for different regions, environmental information and local building codes must be considered with green building certification system criteria. In this paper, LEED and BREEAM certification systems are going to be considered as being the most representative building environment assessment schemes that are in use. As there are conflicting criteria's according to LEED and BREAM sustainable site parameters, local building codes and environmental conditions; an efficient decision support system can be developed by using multi-objective genetic algorithm. This paper presents an effective site-use multi-objective optimization model that use pareto genetic algorithm to determine the most efficient sustainable site layout design for social housing, which could assist designers in the early stage of design process.

title Integrated Generative Technique for Interactive Design of Brickworks
source Digital Crafting [7th International Conference Proceedings of the Arab Society for Computer Aided Architectural Design (ASCAAD 2014 / ISBN 978-603-90142-5-6], Jeddah (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia), 31 March - 3 April 2014, pp. 49-64
summary Bricks have been used in the construction industry as a building medium for millennia. Distinct patterns of bricks depict the unique aesthetic intentions found in Roman, Gothic and Islamic architecture. In contemporary practice, the use of digital tools in design has enabled methodologies for creating new forms in architecture. CAD and BIM systems provide new opportunities for designers to create parametric objects for building form generation. In masonry design, there exists an inherent contradiction between traditional patterns in brick design, which are formal and prescribed, and the potential for new patterns generated using design scripting. In addition, current tools do not provide interactive techniques for the design of brickwork patterns that can manage constant changes parametrically, to inform and influence design process, by providing design feedback on the constructive and structural aspects of the proposed brick pattern and geometry. This research looks into the parametric techniques that can be applied to create different kinds of patterns on brick walls. It discusses a methodology for an interactive brickwork design within generative techniques. By integrating data between two computational platforms – the first based on image analysis and the second on parametric modeling, we demonstrate a methodology and application that can generate interactive arbitrary patterns and map it to the brick wall in real-time.

title Assessing the Use of Advanced Daylight Simulation Modelling Tools in Enhancing the Student Learning Experience
source Digital Crafting [7th International Conference Proceedings of the Arab Society for Computer Aided Architectural Design (ASCAAD 2014 / ISBN 978-603-90142-5-6], Jeddah (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia), 31 March - 3 April 2014, pp. 303-313
summary In architecture schools, where the ‘studio culture’ lies at the heart of students’ learning, taught courses, particularly technology ones, are often seen as secondary or supplementary units. Successful delivery of such courses, where students can act effectively, be motivated and engaged, is a rather demanding task requiring careful planning and the use of various teaching styles. A recent challenge that faces architecture education today, and subsequently influences the way technology courses are being designed, is the growing trend in practice towards environmentally responsive design and the need for graduates with new skills in sustainable construction and urban ecology (HEFCE’s consultation document, 2005). This article presents the role of innovative simulation modelling tools in the enhancement of the student learning experience and professional development. Reference is made to a teaching practice that has recently been applied at Portsmouth School of Architecture in the United Kingdom and piloted at Deakin University in Australia. The work focuses on the structure and delivery of one of the two main technology units in the second year architecture programme that underwent two main phases of revision during the academic years 2009/10 and 2010/11. The article examines the inclusion of advanced daylight simulation modelling tools in the unit programme, and measures the effectiveness of enhancing its delivery as a key component of the curriculum on the student learning experience. A main objective of the work was to explain whether or not the introduction of a simulation modelling component, and the later improvement of its integration with the course programme and assessment, has contributed to a better learning experience and level of engagement. Student feedback and the grade distribution pattern over the last three academic years were collected and analyzed. The analysis of student feedback on the revised modelling component showed a positive influence on the learning experience and level of satisfaction and engagement. An improvement in student performance was also recorded over the last two academic years and following the implementation of new assessment design.

summary Several architectural studies tackled the methodologies of teaching the architectural design subject in general and their relation to the use of computer in particular. The trends varied in accordance with the research that is relevant to the subject due to its importance in generating new architectural models, but it didn’t crystallize a theoretical framework that identifies clear and specific vocabularies related to the methodology of teaching the computer-aided architectural design. The current study discusses the importance of this concept in an attempt to explore the particular problem represented by the non-clarity of this methodology in the department of architecture in Mosul University. Therefore, the problem of the research crystallized and its objective and its methodology were identified and this was represented by constructing a theoretical framework which includes several main items. Then the theoretical framework was applied to selected projects of architectural department students in order to manifest the particularity of teaching the computer-aided architectural design. Results showed the distinction of this department as this methodology led to the derivation of different architectural products in accordance with the particular effects using the computer technologies. The results also manifested the change in the architectural design trend that was caused due to the digital intervention in the way of the student's thinking from one hand and the components and the elements of the building from the other hand that the quality of the design can be improved by using the computer and the quantity will be more in shorter time.

summary The integration of structural considerations in architectural geometry processing is among the topics most discussed in the complex shapes design. While some design tools allow the designer to begin with an inefficient form and then turn it into a more efficient one, other tools allow exploring and creating structural forms considering both formal and structural aspects from the beginning. This paper presents a parametric design approach to create spatial steel trusses with the combination of two strategies: (1) shell surface to set out structural elements; (2) cross section properties to ensure structural stability aspects. In this paper we discuss how the combination of these strategies can contribute to the use of parametric design techniques in the early stages of the design process, taking into account both structural optimization and production aspects.

summary The influence of urban morphology on the energy consumption of a fabric has been recently established by research into the energy use of existing cities. This paper suggests a framework for generating environmentally adapted urban tissue by using genetic algorithms as form-finding processes. A series of multi-objective optimization algorithms are described. The geometric abstractions used as a basis for these algorithms are illustrated in detail, and the results and implications of these types of simulations are discussed. This apparatus allows users to interactively explore such architectonical knowledge in both appealing and informal ways, by enabling them to visualize and manipulate in real-time different design solutions. The authors identify the difficulties on encoding the architectural knowledge of a parametric design model into an interactive apparatus to be used by laypeople. summary Although parametric modelling and digital design tools have become ubiquitous in digital design, there is a limited understanding of how designers apply them in their design processes (Yu et al., 2014). This paper looks at the use of GHShot versioning tool developed by the authors (Cristie & Joyce, 2018; 2019) used to capture and track changes and progression of parametric models to understand early-stage design exploration and collaboration empirically. We introduce both development history graph-based metrics (macro-process) and parametric model and geometry change metric (micro-process) as frameworks to explore and understand the captured progression data. These metrics, applied to data collected from three cohorts of classroom collaborative design exercises, exhibited students' distinct modification patterns such as major and complex creation processes or minor parameter explorations. Finally, with the metrics' applicability as an objective language to describe the (collaborative) design process, we recommend using versioning for more data-driven insight into parametric design exploration processes.
