summary A research team at Florida International University Robotics and Digital Fabrication Lab has developed a novel method for 3d-printing curved open grid core sandwich structures using a thermoplastic extruder mounted on a robotic arm. This print-on-print additive manufacturing (AM) method relies on the 3d modeling software Rhinoceros and its parametric software plugin Grasshopper with Kuka-Parametric Robotic Control (Kuka-PRC) to convert NURBS surfaces into multi-bias additive manufacturing (MBAM) toolpaths. While several high-profile projects including the University of Stuttgart ICD/ITKE Research Pavilions 2014–15 and 2016–17, ETH-Digital Building Technologies project Levis Ergon Chair 2018, and 3D printed chair using Robotic Hybrid Manufacturing at Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) 2019, have previously demonstrated the feasibility of 3d printing with either MBAM or sandwich structures, this method for printing Compound-Curved Sandwich Structures with Robotic MBAM combines these methods offering the possibility to significantly reduce the weight of spanning or cantilevered surfaces by incorporating the structural logic of open grid-core sandwiches with MBAM toolpath printing. Often built with fiber reinforced plastics (FRP), sandwich structures are a common solution for thin wall construction of compound curved surfaces that require a high strength-to-weight ratio with applications including aerospace, wind energy, marine, automotive, transportation infrastructure, architecture, furniture, and sports equipment manufacturing. Typical practices for producing sandwich structures are labor intensive, involving a multi-stage process including (1) the design and fabrication of a mould, (2) the application of a surface substrate such as FRP, (3) the manual application of a light-weight grid-core material, and (4) application of a second surface substrate to complete the sandwich. There are several shortcomings to this moulded manufacturing method that affect both the formal outcome and the manufacturing process: moulds are often costly and labor intensive to build, formal geometric freedom is limited by the minimum draft angles required for successful removal from the mould, and customization and refinement of product lines can be limited by the need for moulds. While the most common material for this construction method is FRP, our proof-of-concept experiments relied on low-cost thermoplastic using a specially configured pellet extruder. While the method proved feasible for small representative examples there remain significant challenges to the successful deployment of this manufacturing method at larger scales that can only be addressed with additional research. The digital workflow includes the following steps: (1) Create a 3D digital model of the base surface in Rhino, (2) Generate toolpaths for laminar printing in Grasshopper by converting surfaces into lists of oriented points, (3) Generate the structural grid-core using the same process, (4) Orient the robot to align in the direction of the substructure geometric planes, (5) Print the grid core using MBAM toolpaths, (6) Repeat step 1 and 2 for printing the outer surface with appropriate adjustments to the extruder orientation. During the design and printing process, we encountered several challenges including selecting geometry suitable for testing, extruder orientation, calibration of the hot end and extrusion/movement speeds, and deviation between the computer model and the physical object on the build platen. Physical models varied from their digital counterparts by several millimeters due to material deformation in the extrusion and cooling process. Real-time deviation verification studies will likely improve the workflow in future studies.

summary This project emerged from collaborative trans-disciplinary research between architecture, engineering, biology, and materials science to generate novel applications in micro-scale 3D printed ceramics. Specifically, PolyBrick H2.0 adapts internal bone-based hydraulic networks through controlled water flow from 3D printed micro-textures and surface chemistry. Engagement across disciplines produced the PolyBrick series at the Sabin Lab (Sabin, Miller, and Cassab 2014) . The series is a manifestation of novel digital fabrication techniques, bioinspired design, materials inquiry, and contemporary evolutions of building materials. A new purpose for the brick is explored that is not solely focused on the mechanical constraints necessary for built masonry structures. PolyBrick H2.0 interweaves the intricacies of living systems (beings and environments combined) to create a more responsive and interactive material system. The PolyBrick 2.0 series looks at human bone as a design model for foundational research. PolyBrick H2.0 merges the cortical bone hydraulic network with new functionalities as a water filtration and collection system for self-preservation and conservation as well as passive cooling solutions. It also pushes the ability of 3D printing techniques to the microscale. These functionalities are investigated under context for a better construction material, but its use may extend further.

summary In this paper we present an outline of a newly started project to develop a tool which connects BIM to a manufacturing technique like 3D printing. First we will look some promising manufacturing techniques. We will design a small dwelling and export it into a BIM, from which we will extract our data to generate the path the nozzle has to follow. The chosen path is constrained by the material properties, the design and speed of the nozzle. To validate the system we develop a small VR tool in which we mimic a manufacturing tool.

summary Bricks have been used in the construction industry as a building medium for millennia. Distinct patterns of bricks depict the unique aesthetic intentions found in Roman, Gothic and Islamic architecture. In contemporary practice, the use of digital tools in design has enabled methodologies for creating new forms in architecture. CAD and BIM systems provide new opportunities for designers to create parametric objects for building form generation. In masonry design, there exists an inherent contradiction between traditional patterns in brick design, which are formal and prescribed, and the potential for new patterns generated using design scripting. In addition, current tools do not provide interactive techniques for the design of brickwork patterns that can manage constant changes parametrically, to inform and influence design process, by providing design feedback on the constructive and structural aspects of the proposed brick pattern and geometry. This research looks into the parametric techniques that can be applied to create different kinds of patterns on brick walls. It discusses a methodology for an interactive brickwork design within generative techniques. By integrating data between two computational platforms – the first based on image analysis and the second on parametric modeling, we demonstrate a methodology and application that can generate interactive arbitrary patterns and map it to the brick wall in real-time.

summary Cultural landscapes, although complex realities, give shape and meaning to the tangible and intangible components which form the foundations of human cultural background. The architecture of the city of Colonia del Sacramento fits within this context, and builds up a unique cultural landscape inserted in the logic of the historical heritage protection system. This concept, which implies wealth but also conflicts, demands a multidisciplinary approach grounded on a wide vision of this issue. Likewise, this comprehensive approach contributes to reverse and correct the lack of capacity and/or interest to save these examples of man-made landscape (prefabrication, mega-projects of the beginnings of the 20th Century, etc.), which are essential pieces of heritage conservation. Since 1943 the bullring is owned by the Municipality of Colonia. In the last decade the building was fenced to prevent breakdown risk. Still, illegal access occurs quite easily, increasing the risk and potential damage, in addition to the spoilage caused by more than one hundred years of inactivity and lack of maintenance. This paper proposes a method to survey and record the current status of the building, from photos taken by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV, drones), allowing the registry without the need of direct access to the site. The survey will enable three types of results: series of mapped photographs, 3D models and an interactive platform for aerial view. The aim is to provide valuable and essential documentation for next stages of consolidation works, competitions and eventualy, new uses of the heritage building.

summary In this paper experiences of documenting an artifact of cultural interest are reported, these experiences were made possible by the interaction between researchers of two areas of study: Memory and Heritage and Digital Graphic Representation. These experiences include building a registration form, obtaining models in virtual reality, augmented reality and 3D printing. The different perceptual dimensions that each type of description can add to an inventorial system were observed as well as which organizational and access to information implications each of these types requires from such a system.

summary The conference logo is a bird’s eye view of spiral stairs that join and separate – an homage to the famous double spiral staircase in Graz, a tourist attraction of this city and a must-see for any architecturally minded visitor. Carved out of limestone, the medieval construction of the original is a daring feat of masonry as well as a symbolic gesture. The design speaks of separation and reconciliation: The paths of two people that climb the double spiral stairs separate and then meet again at each platform. The relationship between architectural design and the growing digital repertoire of tools and possibilities seems to undergo similar cycles of attraction and rejection: enthusiasm about digital innovations – whether in Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Energy Design, Robotic Fabrication, the many Dimensions of BIM or, as right now, in AI and Machine Learning – is typically followed by a certain disillusionment and a realization that the promises were somewhat overblown. But a turn away from these digital innovations can only be temporary. In our call for papers we refer to the first and second ‘digital turns’, a term Mario Carpo coined. Yes, it’s a bit of a pun, but you could indeed see these digital turns in our logo as well. Carpo would probably agree that design and the digital have become inseparably intertwined. While they may be circling in different directions, an innovative rejoinder is always just around the corner. The theme of the conference asked participants to re-consider the relationship between Design and the Digital. The notion of a cycle is already present in the syllable “re”. Indeed, 20 years earlier, in 2003, we held an ECAADE conference in Graz simply under the title “Digital Design” and our re-using – or is it re-cycling? – the theme can be seen as the completion of one of those cycles described above: One level up, we meet again, we’ve come full circle. The question of the relationship between Design and the Digital is still in flux, still worthy of renewed consideration. There is a historical notion implicit in the theme. To reconsider something, one needs to take a step back, to look into the past as well as into the future. Indeed, at this conference we wanted to take a longer view, something not done often enough in the fast-paced world of digital technology. Carefully considering one’s past can be a source of inspiration. In fact, the double spiral stair that inspired our conference logo also inspired many architects through the ages. Konrad Wachsmann, for example, is said to have come up with his famous Grapevine assembly system based on this double spiral stair and its intricate joinery. More recently, Rem Koolhaas deemed the double spiral staircase in Graz important enough to include a detailed model of it in his “elements of architecture” exhibition at the Venice Biennale in 2014. Our interpretation of the stair is a typically digital one, you might say. First of all: it’s a rendering of a virtual model; it only exists inside a computer. Secondly, this virtual model isn’t true to the original. Instead, it does what the digital has made so easy to do: it exaggerates. Where the original has just two spiral stairs that separate and join, our model consists of countless stairs that are joined in this way. We see only a part of the model, but the stairs appear to continue in all directions. The implication is of an endless field of spiral stairs. As the 3D model was generated with a parametric script, it would be very easy to change all parameters of it – including the number of stairs that make it up. Everyone at this conference is familiar with the concept of parametric design: it makes generating models of seemingly endless amounts of connected spiral stairs really easy. Although, of course, if we’re too literal about the term ‘endless’, generating our stair model will eventually crash even the most advanced computers. We know that, too. – That's another truth about the Digital: it makes a promise of infinity, which, in the end, it can’t keep. And even if it could: what’s the point of just adding more of the same: more variations, more options, more possible ways to get lost? Doesn’t the original double spiral staircase contain all those derivatives already? Don’t we know that ‘more’ isn’t necessarily better? In the original double spiral stair the happy end is guaranteed: the lovers’ paths meet at the top as well as when they exit the building. Therefore, the stair is also colloquially known as the Busserlstiege (the kissing stair) or the Versöhnungsstiege (reconciliation stair). In our digitally enhanced version, this outcome is no longer clear: we can choose between multiple directions at each level and we risk losing sight of the one we were with. This is also emblematic of our field of research. eCAADe was founded to promote “good practice and sharing information in relation to the use of computers in research and education in architecture and related professions” (see ecaade.org). That may have seemed a straightforward proposition forty years ago, when the association was founded. A look at the breadth and depth of research topics presented and discussed at this conference (and as a consequence in this book, for which you’re reading the editorial) shows how the field has developed over these forty years. There are sessions on Digital Design Education, on Digital Fabrication, on Virtual Reality, on Virtual Heritage, on Generative Design and Machine Learning, on Digital Cities, on Simulation and Digital Twins, on BIM, on Sustainability, on Circular Design, on Design Theory and on Digital Design Experimentations. summary The aim of this paper is to investigate the applications both current and potential, of combining Augmented Reality (AR) and Building Information Modelling (BIM), providing an insight into attitudes towards utilising these technologies within the construction industry. This paper presents a study which has evaluated current research on the topic of AR and BIM, conducted semi structured interviews with a panel of industry experts and surveyed a sample group of 43 within the wider UK construction industry . Industry experts were interviewed using semi-structured interviews and results were thematically analysed with the data gathered from the literature review. 5 core themes used to structure a nine item industry and practitioner questionnaire. Results suggest that use of AR and BIM within the construction industry will continue to grow with the advent of emerging technologies. Use of AR and BIM combined with 3D Scanning, Wireless Sensory Network will also increase and the synergies between BIM and these emerging technologies will improve overall efficiencies in design, delivery, maintenance and demolition of projects. The findings of this study contribute further knowledge to understanding the implications and possibilities that utilising AR and BIM will have in the construction industry.

summary The aim of this paper is to report the teaching experience held in 2012 at Unicamp between three disciplines of representation. Students analyzed emblematic residences from digital and physical models. Digital models were produced in Revit and its building components were diagrammed in AutoCad. After that, these elements were sent to laser cutter, and hand assembled. In 3DS Max, 3D model allowed simulations such as rendered images and animations. We report the contributions of these analog and digital artifacts in the design process. This article contributes to reflection and debate on the application of digital technologies in the analysis of iconic buildings of architecture.

summary This research investigated the impact of synchronous distributed non immersive cloud-VR (cloud computing type of Virtual Reality) meetings using the annotation function by noting an architectural design process. The experimentation of collaborative design work at the early stage of a housing renovation project was executed by three designers. The synchronously distributed meetings using cloud-VR and a freehand sketching function were completed in two days. The annotation function was used effectively when a designer wished to show the space composition and volume shape of the planned building and so on. The proposed design environment, sharing a 3D virtual space with viewpoints, plans, sketches and other information synchronously and remotely, was feasible and effective.

title Crafting the Virtual Sensory Environment: building performance simulation visualization as an enabler for creating sensory environments

summary The sensory virtual environment is defined as a cognitive method leading to a mental model of potential value in gaining insights of how building spaces may perform to enhance the sensory experience of occupants. For architects, creating a sensory and experiential space is the holy grail of design endeavours. So far, the results of the experiential and sensory success of buildings are dependent on the architects’ own experience and judgment of materials and compositions within the space. Currently the use of tools such as 3D Max provides an ocular experience of the crafted virtual space, rarely giving indications of daylight and possible sensory experiences of the indoor thermal and acoustic conditions. In practice testing the thermal, daylight and other environmental performances of buildings at design stage is within the remit of building services consultants for conformity regulatory checks, and is dominated by extensive 2D (graphs) information exchanges. There is a need to include other formats of visual information exchanges to facilitate decisions on sustainable buildings and to achieve performing sensory environments This paper presents an exploration of endeavours to test the virtual sensory space through visualizations of building performance and aims to provide recommendations on how to fuse endeavours to disseminate knowledge within the design team while creating an information exchange mechanism that captures experts’ explicit and tacit knowledge. Case studies will be presented on how building performance simulation tools are used to provide matrices of relations to indicate the building performance, thermal comfort, daylight and natural ventilation and were used as an aid for architectural design decisions to create sensory environments.

summary This study, which scans an architectural space with two-wheel vehicle robot technology that allows the flexible collection of three-dimensional (3D) data, may initiate the interaction between human beings and architecture in the future. It focuses on extracting building geometry and capturing human behavior in order to allow a space to communicate with human behavior. The current project extracts building geometry and human behavior data to create designs through a two-wheel robot; it was a collaborative project among the students of different majors, including mechanical engineering, human interaction, computer sciences, and architectural design. In this paper, the adaptive possibility of the RGB-Depth camera is examined in extracting building geometry.

summary In this paper, we discuss the results of a collaboration between the Carleton Immersive Media Studio (CIMS), the Dominion Sculptor of Canada, and the Heritage Conservation Directorate (HCD) of Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC), on the development of a digitally-assisted stone carving process. The collaboration couples the distinguished skill of the Dominion Sculptor with digital acquisition and digital fabrication technologies in the reconstruction of a stone relief sculpture on the façade of the East Block building of the Canadian Parliament in Ottawa, Canada. A variety of digital technologies were used including, hand-held laser scanning, digital photogrammetry, 3d-printing, CNC milling, and robotic stone milling, in initial research for the fabrication of maquettes and the collaboration with the Dominion Sculptor.

summary According to Hod Lipson at Cornell University’s Creative Machines Lab, cloud manufacturing ‘consists of a network of smallscale, decentralized nodes of production.’ It is a novel production approach relative to centralized mass production and standardisation methods common to today’s industrial processes. To date, cloud manufacturing techniques have focused largely on the production of smallscale consumer goods that integrate digital fabrication techniques, the most popular being 3D-printing technology. With advances in network-based design platforms for 3D-printing services in combination with the global installation of fabrication laboratories (fab lab), the production of architectural building components using cloud manufacturing techniques is now possible. This paper will define how cloud manufacturing techniques can be expanded into the realm of architectural practice and, in particular, how such techniques can be applied to larger-scale building and construction components. The paper will further discuss how such novel additive manufacturing (AM) processes applied to construction can potentially revolutionize architectural design by generating a new collaborative design model that facilitates local production of customized and readily assembled building components on demand.

summary Regarding interior building topology as an important aspect in building design and management, several approaches to indoor point cloud structuring have been introduced recently. Apart from a high-level semantic segmentation of the formerly unstructured point clouds into stories and rooms, these methods additionally allow the extraction of attributed graphs in which nodes represent rooms (including room properties like area or height), and edges represent connections between rooms (doors or staircases) or indicate neighborhood relationships (separation by walls). In this paper, we investigate possible applications of these approaches in architectural design and building management and comment on the possible benefits for the building profession. While contemporary practice of spatial arrangement is predominantly based on the manual iteration of spatial topologies, we show that the segmentation of buildings in spaces along with the untraditional more abstract graph-based representations can be used for design, management and navigation within building structures.

summary In recent years, Building Information Models have become commonplace in building profession. The extensive use and increasing experience with BIM models offers new perspectives and potentials for design and planning. A recent stakeholder study conducted by the authors of this paper show that in practice models are no longer solely observed as culmination of knowledge in a 3d representation of future built structures, but as a source of information in itself. Experienced users of BIM want to Find Information within a model or across a set of these and Compare models in order to evaluate states of a model, differences in separate models or models from different point of time. Current BIM tools support both modes only in a rudimentary form. This paper discusses current modes of information query within and across BIM models, shows beneficial scenarios for building and planning practice through customised queries and exemplifies these on the base of a scripted tool. This customized approach is used to test approaches for a machine-based assessment of Level of detail and BIM-readiness in BIM models.

summary Typical horizontal building types, open spaces, and human activities have yet to competently overcome or adapt to the constraints of vertically-oriented dense urban environments. Designing the built environment to the oblique, or more than two axes at once, is a required strategy for the future of city planning, the advancement of body-space interaction in architecture, and to reinforce the interconnectedness of the natural environment with human activities. With the development and increasing use of 3D modeling software, parametric and generative design processes, and the progressive investigation of complex geometry, it is likely that the oblique will be envisioned more and more as a functional architectural device. This research investigates the tessellation of minimal surface geometry to achieve a folded, multi-use surface capable of connecting disparate urban program and which can enable a city to offer amenities that are typically available in horizontally-oriented suburbs. The geometric family of the helicoid is found as the optimal formal generator because of its ability to create a continuous surface while allowing for both horizontal and vertical circulation.

summary Sketching by hand is without doubt – alongside building models – the most common tool that architects employ when designing. A disadvantage of the sketch is, even if it is a perspective drawing, that it is a purely two-dimensional planar representation of a three-dimensional product: the three-dimensional impression that the sketch communicates is a product of the viewer’s imagination. Digital modelling tools on the other hand support the creation of three-dimensional content but fall short in their ease of handling: their complexity and potentially unintuitive operation hinder rather than support the design process. Taking this discrepancy as a starting point, the presented system details the development and prototypical implementation of a dynamic 3D-sketching tool. The underlying core idea is to create a seamless connection between a perspective hand-sketch and the corresponding digital 3D-model in order to benefit from the advantages of hand sketching as a design tool and computer maintained 3D models. The system allows the designer to work as usual, visualizing his or her thoughts using perspective sketches. The user sketches on a touchscreen surface. The 2D drawing is automatically interpreted and converted into a system of 3D lines, surfaces and volumes in real-time.

summary Spacer fabrics are 3D warp-knitted fabrics, which have a volumetric structure. Together with the capacity to differentially stretch and contract, these materials allow three dimensional which is specific to spacer fabrics. The authors present a computational design methodology which enables the generation of form based on these material characteristics and local, regional and global material manipulations. Such a process can not only generate functional surface articulations, but also control the forming of spatial textile geometries. As a resin infused composite structure the spacer fabric can serve as architectural construction and building envelope. This new methodology to develop fibrous and textile morphology is contrary to a traditional hierarchical design process, which is based on a linear strategy from design to implementation. The investigation methods are based on analogue material experimentation and integration of the materials behaviour into a computational design process. Such a feedback process can unfold potential material morphologies and performances of spacer fabric as an architectural material.
